Convict life snapshot in museum hands

A Sydney woman has donated convict letters from the early 1800s to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.

Syliva Cridland’s great, great uncle James Cridland was convicted of forgery and sentenced to 14 years transportation in 1821.

He wrote letters to his father and brother over a period of more than 20 years, describing life on a prison hulk at sea and as a free man in Tasmania.

Ms Cridland has given the collection to the museum.

“I don’t have any children and I just thought, what’s going to happen to these wonderful letters when I die?”

Museum Curator, Elspeth Wishart says the collection is historically significant.

“It adds another dimension. A lot of our material is focussed on Port Arthur or Hobart.”

The letters were written between 1821 and 1844.

Airlines blamed for tourism dive

Tasmania’s Tourism Industry Council says airlines are partly responsible for a recent fall in visitor numbers to the state.

The latest visitor snapshot shows tourist numbers increased by 2 per cent in 2009 compared to the previous year, but fell to below 2008 levels in the last three months of the year.

Daniel Hanna from the Tourism Industry Council says recent cuts to the number of airline seats have contributed to the result.

“People just can’t get here when they want to, or they have to pay more to do so,” he said.

“So we need to focus on working with airlines and our airports to try and increase the seats.

“We know Tasmania remains a desirable destination and we hope that can resolve some of the issues we’ve started to see in the last few months.”

94pct Oz kids like watching TV

Melbourne, July 15 (ANI): Television continues to invade the lives of Australian kids, according to a new survey.early 94 per cent of the children, aged between three and 17, watched in excess of one hour of TV a day, which increases to two hours for those over the age of eight.

The data compiled by the Australian Communications and Media Authority showed that although interest in other mediums, such as DVDs, videos and computers, both rose and fell depending on age, kids continued to watch TV at the same participation rates.

It showed that DVDs and videos were of most interest among three to four-year-olds but the interest seems to decrease, as children get older.

On the other hand, computer and Internet use increased with age, with 88 per cent of those aged 15 to 17 admitting using them.

According to Authority’s chairman, Chris Chapman, the report provided a “generational snapshot” about technology while also revealing that television was the one enduring medium.

“The report is sure to inform further debate about the importance of digital media literacy as Australian parents mediate their children’s evolving relationship with digital media and communications,” News.com.au quoted him as saying. (ANI)

Genetic mapping shows how staph infections disrupt immune system

Washington, July 14 (ANI): Researchers have used genetic mapping to explain how the human immune system is programmed to respond to Staphylococcus aureus infections.

Infectious disease specialists at UT Southwestern Medical Center have mapped the gene profiles of children with severe S. aureus infections, to see how the pathogen alters the human immune system.

The findings of the study could open new doors for improved therapeutic interventions.t has long been unknown how the host’s immune system responded to S. aureus infection, and why some individuals are more vulnerable towards severe staphylococcal infections than others.

“The beauty of our study is that we were able to use existing technology to understand in a real clinical setting what’s going on in actual humans – not models, not cells, not mice, but humans. We have provided the first description of a pattern of response within an individual’s immune system that is very consistent, very reproducible and very intense,” said Dr. Monica Ardura, lead author of the study.

The immune system consists of two components- the innate system, which provides immediate defense against infection, and the adaptive system, whose memory cells are called into action to fight off subsequent infections.

During the study, the researchers extracted ribonucleic acid from a drop of blood, and placed it on a special gene chip called a microarray, which probes the entire human genome to determine which genes are turned on or off.

It was found that in children with invasive staphylococcal infections, the genes involved in the body’s innate immune response are overactivated while those associated with the adaptive immune system are suppressed.

“It’s a very sophisticated and complex dysregulation of the immune system, but our findings prove that there’s consistency in the immune response to the staphylococcus bacterium. Now that we know how the immune system responds, the question is whether we can use this to predict patient outcomes or differentiate the sickest patients from the less sick ones. How can we use this knowledge to develop better therapies?” said Ardura.

The researchers used blood samples collected between 2001 and 2005 from 77 children – 53 hospitalized at Children’s Medical Center Dallas with invasive S. aureus infections and 24 controls.

Ardura claimed that more research was needed because the results represented a one-time snapshot of what’s going on in the cell during an invasive staphylococcal infection.

The researchers are now hoping to understand better how various staph-infection therapies affect treatment.

The study is available online in PLoS One, the Public Library of Science’s online journal. (ANI)

“Snowball Earth” may not be responsible for mass extinction of early life on Earth

Washington, May 27 (ANI): New fossil findings discovered by scientists have challenged the prevailing views about the effects of “Snowball Earth” glaciations on life, which is presumed to be responsible for widespread die-off of early life on Earth.

By analyzing microfossils in rocks from the bottom of the Grand Canyon, the scientists from UC (University of California) Santa Barbara have challenged the view that has been generally assumed to be correct for the massive extinction of early life on Earth.

“Snowball Earth” is the popular term for glaciations that occurred between approximately 726 and 635 million years ago and are hypothesized to have entombed the planet in ice, explained co-author Susannah Porter, assistant professor of earth science at UCSB.

It has long been noted that these glaciations are associated with a big drop in the fossil diversity, suggesting a mass die-off at this time, perhaps due to the severity of the glaciations.

However, the research team found evidence suggesting that this drop in diversity occurred some 16 million or more years before the glaciations.

They offer an alternative reason for the drop.

A location called the Chuar Group in the Grand Canyon serves as “one of the premier archives of mid-Neoproterozoic time,” according to the research.

This time period, before Snowball Earth, is preserved as a sort of “snapshot” in the canyon walls.

The scientists found that diverse assemblages of microscopic organic-walled fossils called acritarchs, which dominate the fossil record of this time, are present in lower rocks of the Chuar Group, but are absent from higher strata.

In their place, there is evidence for the bacterial blooms that, the researchers hypothesize, most likely appeared because of an increase in nutrients in the surface waters.

This process is known as eutrophication, and occurs today in coastal areas and lakes that receive abundant runoff from fertilizers used in farming.

“One or a few species of phytoplankton monopolizes nutrients at the expense of others,” said Porter, explaining the die-off of diverse acritarchs.

“In addition, the algal blooms result in high levels of organic matter production, which we see evidence of in the high organic carbon content in upper Chuar Group rocks. As a result of high levels of organic matter, oxygen levels in the water can become depleted, resulting in widespread “dead zones”,” she added.

Porter and colleagues also found evidence for extreme anoxia in association with the bacterial blooms. (ANI)

Inquiry to be held into UK anti-terror operation

London, Apr.23 (ANI): The anti-terrorist operation that led to the resignation of a senior policeman, armed raids, the search of 14 properties but ultimately no charges, is to be the subject of an independent inquiry.

The Times quoted Lord Carlile of Berriew, the reviewer of terrorism legislation, said that he would carry out “a snapshot review” of the detention of 12 men picked up a fortnight ago in Manchester, Liverpool and Lancashire, amid claims of an Easter bomb plot. Gordon Brown said at the time that the authorities had foiled “a very big terrorist plot”.

Lord Carlile said that he had personally decided to review Operation Pathway, details of which were accidentally disclosed to Downing Street photographers by Assistant Commissioner Bob Quick of Scotland Yard, forcing the arrests to be brought forward.

Quick resigned, admitting that he had compromised the operation.

Lord Carlile said: “I shall be requesting input into these events from all involved as soon as possible. This will include those arrested and their legal representatives.”

A Greater Manchester police spokesman said there was insufficient evidence to justify extending the detention of the men. (ANI)

Inquiry to be held into UK’s anti-terror raids

London, Apr 23 (ANI): An independent inquiry is likely to be held into the anti-terrorist operation that led to the resignation of a senior British policeman, armed raids, arrest and release of 11 Pakistani citizens without any charges being levied on them.

Lord Carlile of Berriew, the reviewer of terrorism legislation, said that he would carry out “a snapshot review” of the detention of 12 men picked up a fortnight ago in Manchester, Liverpool and Lancashire, amid claims of an Easter bomb plot.

The release of the final two suspects on Wednesday means that all 12 have been freed without charge. However, 11 of them, Pakistani citizens in Britain on student visas, face deportation on national security grounds, a process that is likely to spark lengthy legal challenges, The Times reported.

“I shall be requesting input into these events from all involved as soon as possible. This will include those arrested and their legal representatives,” he said.

The only British citizen among those freed was named locally as Hamza Shenwari, 41, a delivery driver, from Cheetham Hill, Manchester.

Neighbours said that Shenwari was staying at a hotel while police restored his home to the state it was in before extensive searches.

The failure of the operation raises questions about the level of co-operation between different anti-terror agencies.

MI5, Scotland Yard and Greater Manchester are said to have had angry disagreements about the timing of the arrests. (ANI)

Seoul shares seen up helped by U.S. results

SEOUL, April 20 (Reuters) – Seoul shares may rise on Monday
after gains on Wall Street, with banks likely to be helped by
better-than-expected results from Citigroup (C.N), but caution
before a batch of key South Korean earnings could limit rises.

“The rises in U.S. stocks and U.S. results will help
sentiment. But Seoul stocks snapped a five-week gaining streak
last Friday and it seems caution is setting in,” said Kim
Hyoung-ryoul, a market analyst at NH Investment and Securities.

The Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI)
finished down 0.58 percent at 1,329.00 points on Friday,
stumbling after five straight weekly gains.

“Investors will probably want to confirm a set of key
doemstic earnings this week, but since they are not expected to
be as bad as feared, we can hope for the return of weekly gains,”
Kim added.

Slumdog bosses donate 500k pounds to educate poor kids in India

London, Apr 17 (ANI): Slumdog Millionaire bosses have donated 500,000 pounds to kick off a programme aimed at educating poor kids in India.

The filmmakers have teamed up with Plan, an international kids’ development organisation, to create the five-year programme targeted towards providing healthcare and education.

“Having benefited so much from the hospitality of the people of Mumbai, it is only right that some of the success of the movie be ploughed back into the city in areas where it is needed most and where it can make a real difference to some lives,” the Daily Express quoted director Danny Boyle as saying.

“Slumdog Millionaire has shown audiences around the world a snapshot of what life is like for one in six people on the planet,” added Plan U.K.’s chief executive, Marie Staunton.

“Education really is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty so we will focus the funds on getting children into school, keeping them there and ensuring they are healthy,” she added.

The Oscar winning director had previously he set up the Jai Ho Trust to ensure that the film’s two young stars Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Ismail, who played Latika and Salim in the early scenes of the film, get proper education. (ANI)

NASA’s Kepler mission begins hunt for planets like Earth

Washington, April 17 (ANI): NASA’s Kepler mission has taken its first images of the star-rich sky where it will soon begin hunting for planets like Earth.

The new images show the mission’s target patch of sky, a vast starry field in the Cygnus-Lyra region of our Milky Way galaxy.

One image shows millions of stars in Kepler’s full field of view, while two others zoom in on portions of the larger region.

“Kepler’s first glimpse of the sky is awe-inspiring,” said Lia LaPiana, Kepler’s program executive at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “To be able to see millions of stars in a single snapshot is simply breathtaking,” she added.

One new image from Kepler shows its entire field of view – a 100-square-degree portion of the sky, equivalent to two side-by-side dips of the Big Dipper.

The regions contain an estimated 14 millions stars, more than 100,000 of which were selected as ideal candidates for planet hunting.

Two other views focus on just one-thousandth of the full field of view.

In one image, a cluster of stars located about 13,000 light-years from Earth, called NGC 6791, can be seen in the lower left corner.

The other image zooms in on a region containing a star, called Tres-2, with a known Jupiter-like planet orbiting every 2.5 days.

“It’s thrilling to see this treasure trove of stars,” said William Borucki, science principal investigator for Kepler at NASA’s Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, California.

“We expect to find hundreds of planets circling those stars, and for the first time, we can look for Earth-size planets in the habitable zones around other stars like the sun,” he added.

Kepler will spend the next three-and-a-half years searching more than 100,000 pre-selected stars for signs of planets.

It is expected to find a variety of worlds, from large, gaseous ones, to rocky ones as small as Earth.

The mission is the first with the ability to find planets like ours – small, rocky planets orbiting sun-like stars in the habitable zone, where temperatures are right for possible lakes and oceans of water.

“Everything about Kepler has been optimized to find Earth-size planets,” said James Fanson, Kepler’s project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“Our images are road maps that will allow us, in a few years, to point to a star and say a world like ours is there,” he added. (ANI)

Nikkei set to rise on Wall St gain, NEC Elec eyed

TOKYO, April 16 (Reuters) – Japan’s Nikkei average is likely
to rise on Thursday, with banking shares expected to gain ground
after Wall Street climbed on several signs that the U.S.
recession could be abating.

NEC Electronics Corp (6723.T) will be in focus after sources
said it and Renesas Technology Corp are in the final stage of
talks on a merger in a bid to survive as sales slump amid global
economic turmoil. [ID:nT223191]

“After a steady performance on Wall Street, Japanese stocks
will likely gain, with financial shares stabilising,” said Yoku
Ihara, manager at Retela Crea Securities.

“The merger news between NEC Electronics and Renesas is also
positive. When there’s a strong leader in an industry, that
promotes efficiency and gradually leads to more strength in
negotiating prices,” he said.

Hope that the economic slump was abating rose after the U.S.
Federal Reserve’s Beige Book indicated the economy continued to
weaken, but the contraction’s speed was fading.

Adding to the upbeat tone, data from American Express (AXP.N)
signaled that the ability of some consumers to pay their bills is
stabilising. [.N]

Nikkei futures traded in Chicago 2NKc1 closed at 8,925 on
Wednesday, 185 points above the Osaka close, pointing to
a higher opening.

Market participants expect the benchmark Nikkei .N225 to
move between 8,700 and 8,900 on Thursday. It fell 1.1 percent the
previous day to end at 8,742.96 for its third consecutive day of
losses — its first such run in nearly two weeks.

Though activity may be limited after most major overseas
centres were closed on Friday due to the long Easter weekend,
hopes that things may be heading up for U.S. financials after
Wells Fargo (WFC.N) posted better-than-expected quarterly results
are expected to keep sentiment positive.

“The market rose so rapidly late last week that there is a
sense of overheating in sectors like high tech, but we’re also
seeing increased signs of market energy, and this will continue,”
said Hiroichi Nishi, general manager of the equity division at
Nikko Cordial Securities

Investors are keenly awaiting more U.S. bank results due out
this week, including Citigroup (C.N) on Friday, and trade
activity is likely to be slow.

The benchmark Nikkei .N225 is expected to trade between
8,800 and 9,100. It closed at 8,964.11 on Friday.

Nikkei futures trade in Chicago 2NKc1 was closed on Friday
due to the Good Friday holiday. Nikkei futures traded in Osaka
JNIc1 closed at 8,970.

Seoul shares may rise, but gains seen limited

SEOUL, April 13 (Reuters) – Seoul shares may rise on Monday
but gains could be limited following their latest rally and as a
long weekend on Wall Street gives the market little direction,
with auto issues likely to be in the spotlight on government
support measures.

“I’d say shares still have upward momentum, though caution
about corporate results exists. Investors are waiting in
particular for U.S. bank results, which Wells Fargo (WFC.N)
kicked off on a positive note,” said Lee Jae-mahn, a market
analyst at Tong Yang Securities.

“Stocks have risen too much and too fast, and gains may be
limited in that regard,” Lee added.

The Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) ended
up 1.50 percent at 1,336.04 points on Friday, posting its fifth
consecutive week of gains, the longest weekly winning streak
since June, 2007.

Auto issues including Hyundai Motor (005380.KS) may be in the
spotlight after news South Korea plans to spend 500 billion won
($376.5 million) to help the country’s car industry through the
global downturn. [ID:nSEO26773]

He will say the incident, which left a nine-year-old and 11-year-old with serious injuries, should serve as a “wake up call” for “Broken Britain”.

In a major speech to a think tank in central London, he will draw a link between minor yobbishness and the “brutality” of more serious violence.

He will pledge to “go to war” on anti-social behaviour in an effort to stop it escalating as youngsters get older.

And he will say it is time to “reclaim the streets” from groups of drunken yobs smashing windows and vandalising cars.

Speaking to the Policy Exchange think tank, he will say the Doncaster attacks provide a “stark snapshot” of Britain’s “Broken Society”.

He will say: “The incident in Doncaster this week should serve as a wake up call for our nation. Thankfully, events as grotesque as this one involving such young children remain pretty rare. But violence between children is becoming too much of a norm.

“The event in Doncaster is only the latest and probably the worst example of a whole series of incidents where children are killing or maiming other children.”

He will call for police to be given more discretion in dealing with young people and demand “instant community punishments” for serious anti-social behaviour.

Headteachers should be given powers to exclude pupils and not have their decisions overruled, he will say.

‘Smart’ Miley Cyrus blasts her critics

New Delhi, Apr 9 (ANI): Miley Cyrus has blasted her critics, insisting that she’s very smart.

The 16-year-old Disney sensation had done a “Vanity Fair” cover shot last June in which she was draped only in a bed sheet. The pic, however, didn’t go down well with parents. They complained that it was an inappropriate move for the schoolgirl star their young daughters idolize, reports The China Daily.

Then there were personal pictures of her leaked on the Internet showing a strip of her green bra.

More recently, a snapshot of her making “slant eyes” prompted an Asian group to say it was “mocking and denigrating” to people of Asian descent.

Now, the stunner has hit back at her critics, saying: “I’m like, I’m smarter than you think. You know, I understand what you’re trying to do. It’s all a mind game and what not.”

Her next project is a movie based on a book that Nicolas Sparks-the author of “A Walk to Remember,” “The Notebook,” and “Nights in Rodanthe”-is writing and adapting for her.

“It’s more of an edgy role, which I’m excited to do,” said Cyrus.

“It’s really important to me that people think of me as a real artist,” she added. (ANI)
