UDAHY, Wis. (AP) – Fire crews battled a large blaze at a meatpacking plant in a crowded suburb south of Milwaukee on Monday, and authorities warned residents within a mile of the plant to leave the area because of the threat of toxic fumes.

The fire started Sunday night in an area between the sprinkler system and the roof, Fire Chief Dan Mayer said. About 100 firefighters were still battling the blaze Monday morning at the Patrick Cudahy Inc. plant in Cudahy, seven miles south of downtown Milwaukee. No injuries were reported.

Nearby residents were told to evacuate the area because of possible ammonia fumes, Mayor Ryan McCue said. Carla Peterson, a plant official, said only a few of the company’s roughly 2,000 workers were at the 128-year-old plant when the fire started, and that no one was hurt.

Mayer said the fire was difficult to fight because it is in a confined space. He said there was heavy fire, water and smoke damage to the plant.

Seven health inspectors hurt in Kiev in grenade attack on office

Kiev – Seven Ukrainian health inspectors were injured Wednesday by a hand grenade thrown into their office, Korrespondent newspaper reported.

The blast took place in the Ukrainian capital Kiev shortly after midday.

The target, a branch office Ukraine’s Sanitation and Epidemic Inspectorate near the Kiev central train station, suffered broken windows and smoke damage from the explosion.

The victims all received injuries “of varying degrees” from metal fragments and were hospitalised, the Interfax news agency reported.

Police said the weapon most likely had been a Soviet-era RGD-5 hand grenade. Law enforcers were searching for the bomber but two hours after the blast had not made public details on possible suspects.

No motive for the attack has yet emerged, but Ukraine’s Sanitation and Epidemic Inspectorate is responsible for, among other duties, checking sanitation standards in food service businesses.

Kiev’s last grenade attack came in April, after a explosive device hidden in a trash bin detonated in the central Shevchenko park, hospitalising two persons. (dpa)
