Some animals can reflect upon, monitor, regulate their states of mind

Washington, September 15 (ANI): Conducting extensive research into animal cognition, psychologists at the University at Buffalo have found that some animals may share humans’ ability to reflect upon, monitor or regulate their states of mind.

“Comparative psychologists have studied the question of whether or not non-human animals have knowledge of their own cognitive states by testing a dolphin, pigeons, rats, monkeys and apes using perception, memory and food-concealment paradigms,” said Dr. J. David Smith, a comparative psychologist at the university.

“The field offers growing evidence that some animals have functional parallels to humans’ consciousness and to humans’ cognitive self-awareness,” he added.

He counts dolphins and macaque monkeys among such species.

Recounting the original animal-metacognition experiment with Natua the dolphin, Smith said: “When uncertain, the dolphin clearly hesitated and wavered between his two possible responses, but when certain, he swam toward his chosen response so fast that his bow wave would soak the researchers’ electronic switches.”

He added: “In sharp contrast, pigeons in several studies have so far not expressed any capacity for metacognition. In addition, several converging studies now show that capuchin monkeys barely express a capacity for metacognition. This last result,” Smith says, “raises important questions about the emergence of reflective or extended mind in the primate order. This research area opens a new window on reflective mind in animals, illuminating its phylogenetic emergence and allowing researchers to trace the antecedents of human consciousness.”

Smith describes metacognition as a sophisticated human capacity linked to hierarchical structure in the mind because the metacognitive executive control processes oversee lower-level cognition, to self-awareness because uncertainty and doubt feel so personal and subjective, and to declarative consciousness because humans are conscious of their states of knowing and can declare them to others.

Therefore, Smith says: “It is a crucial goal of comparative psychology to establish firmly whether animals share humans’ metacognitive capacity. If they do, it could bear on their consciousness and self-awareness, too.”

He concludes, “Metacognition rivals language and tool use in its potential to establish important continuities or discontinuities between human and animal minds.”

A research article describing his study has been published in the journal Trends in Cognitive Science. (ANI)

Only four percent Israelis think Obama is pro-Israel: Poll

Jerusalem, Aug. 28 (ANI): Only four percent Israelis consider the policies of President Barack Obama as pro-Israel, a Smith Research poll conducted by The Jerusalem Post has revealed.

More than half (51 percent) of Jewish Israelis consider Obama’s administration more pro-Palestinian than pro-Israel, according to the survey, while 35 percent consider it neutral.

The support for Obama Administration has fallen 2 percent from an earlier poll published in the paper.

In June, 6 percent Israelis had viewed the policies of the Obama administration more pro-Palestinian than pro-Israeli, while less than four in 10 said the policies were neutral.

The poll of 500 people representing a statistical model of the Jewish Israeli population had a margin of error of 4.5 percent.

Obama’s popularity among Israelis has been plummeting since a May 17 Post poll on the eve of a meeting between Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Obama at the White House.

The new poll was taken on Monday and Tuesday, before reports that Obama had agreed to exclude Jerusalem from a deal with Netanyahu on a construction freeze and to allow construction of essential public buildings, such as schools, to continue in Judea and Samaria.

The poll asked Jewish Israelis whether they would support freezing settlement construction for a year as part of an American-brokered deal.

Fifty percent said no, 41 percent said yes and 9 percent did not express an opinion. (ANI)

Gene linked with language, speech, reading disorders identified

Washington, August 28 (ANI): An international group of American and Spanish researchers have identified a new candidate gene for Specific Language Impairment.

Mabel Rice at the University of Kansas, Shelley Smith of University of Nebraska Medical Center, and Javier Gayan of Seville-based Neocodex in Spain have shed light on the KIAA0319 in the current issue of the Journal of Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

The researchers have revealed that the gene found on Chromosome 6 was associated with variability in language abilities in a study of children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI) and their family members.

They say that the gene was also found to be linked with variability in speech and reading abilities.

According to the researchers, the children they selected for the study had no hearing loss, general intellectual deficit or autism

Language ability involves vocabulary and grammar, whereas speech involves the accuracy of sound production. Both language and speech ability contribute to a child’s ability to read.

The researchers say that the finding that a candidate gene could influence all three abilities suggests a common pathway that could contribute to overlapping strengths or deficiencies across speech, language and reading.

Rice said: “We don’t understand the biological mechanisms yet but it’s important that we have identified the first gene that could be involved across these three different dimensions of development.”

The study involved 322 individuals, including children with SLI, their parents, siblings, and other family members.

“We have come to realize that language really sets the platform for reading to emerge and to thrive. Without a solid language system, it’s much harder to get reading going,” said Rice. (ANI)

Dannii Minogue extremely happy with new love

Melbourne, Aug 25 (ANI): Australian singer Dannii Minogue has confessed that she is extremely happy with her new found love, Kris Smith, a British male model.

“I’ve never been happier. I am just so, so in love. For the first year, we’ve been working out how to be together because our jobs are so crazy and all over the place,” the Daily Telegraph quoted her as having told the Daily Mirror newspaper in the U.K.

She said: “But I know he’s The One. That’s all I can say – he is The One. I adore my boyfriend.”

She apparently met Smith, a former British rugby league player, while on a holiday in Spain a year ago.

“We’ve just had our one-year anniversary. I surprised him and flew out from London to Sydney for his birthday,” the beauty who is a judge on the Seven Network’s Australia’s Got Talent and Britain’s X Factor added.

“He had a big fashion show there and it took a month of planning. It’s hard to surprise someone when there are people reporting where you are. But it worked – I did surprise him.

“It was just incredible. And then to go into midnight when it was his birthday and our anniversary was awesome – he got me a beautiful necklace,” she added.

The couple have even discussed marriage, but they intend to take it slow.

“I guess we’ve talked about marriage but we’re trying to take things slowly. I think it’s a guy’s thing to propose, although I haven’t really thought about the details.

“I guess at my age I have to start thinking about babies at some time. But to be honest, I’m just enjoying being so wildly in love and being so happy.

“I honestly never thought this would happen to me. So I haven’t been thinking too far ahead, just enjoying every day as it happens. But it will come when it comes.”

Minogue has divorced from Australian actor Julian Mcmahon fame, apart from being engaged to former Formula 1 racing driver Jacques Villeneuve in the past. (ANI)

Smith and Hawken is closing immiediately. The company CEO Jim Hagedorn  said that they will close all of their 56 stores, becuase the combination of a weak economy and the lack of scale proved too great to overcome.

He added that this was the best option, given in the current situation. It has been found out that the store has underperformed for the last five years, ultimately leading into big losses. Smith & Hawken says storewide sales across the chain will begin immediately and will be managed by a third-party firm.

Cruise had advised Becks to join LA Galaxy

New York, July 9 (ANI): It was Hollywood actor Tom Cruise who had advised ace footballer David Beckham to take up a job at LA Galaxy, according to a new book.

The soccer ace is known to share a special bond with Cruise.

In ‘The Beckham Experiment’, Sports Illustrated writer Grant Wahl has devoted nearly an entire chapter on the duo’s friendship.

Wahl says that the Mission Impossible star has influenced every major decision Becks has made since the two met in 2003.

Beckham told him that he talked to his best mate most days of the week, and took his advice on nearly everything.

It was Cruise who had advised the 33-year-old England midfielder to take a job with the L.A. Galaxy.

He also recommended Beckham’s physical therapist and introduced him to another superstar pal, Will Smith.

Cruise even influenced Beckham’s decision in naming his third son, Cruz, according to Wahl.

“I must admit, when (Victoria and I) met Tom, I remember turning around to Victoria and saying, ‘Cruise is a great name, but we could spell it different,’” Beckham told Wahl for the book. (ANI)

Megan Fox still has a lot of growing to do, says ‘Transformers’ director

Washington, July 03(ANI): ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’ director Michael Bay has slammed Megan Fox, calling her “ridiculous” for speaking against the movie.

Fox told Entertainment Weekly: “I mean, I can’t s**t on this movie because it did give me a career and open all these doors for me. But I don’t want to blow smoke up people’s a**. People are well aware that this is not a movie about acting.”

However, the helmer begs to disagree and instead feels that Fox still “has growing to do”.

“Well, that’s Megan Fox for you. She says some very ridiculous things because she’s 23 years old and she still has a lot of growing to do,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

Bay is also not ready to keep secret the fact that he has helped many other stars like Fox in Hollywood turn big through his films.

He added: “Nic Cage wasn’t a big actor when I cast him, nor was Ben Affleck before I put him in Armageddon. Shia LaBeouf wasn’t a big movie star before he did Transformers – and then he exploded. Not to mention Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, from Bad Boys.

“Nobody in the world knew about Megan Fox until I found her and put her in Transformers. I like to think that I’ve had some luck in building actors’ careers with my films.” (ANI)

Spielberg, Smith’s plans to remake ‘Old Boy’ thrown into jeopardy

London, Jun 30 (ANI): American film director Steven Spielberg and actor Will Smith’s plans to remake cult Korean movie ‘Old Boy’ have been thrown into jeopardy, as the original makers of the 2003 hit are allegedly not authorised to grant a remake.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Spielberg and Smith had recently secured the rights to modernise director Park Chan-Wook’s film from producers Show East.

But Show East filmmakers have found themselves at the centre of a lawsuit from Futabasha bosses, the Japanese publishers of the original manga series, who claim the producers were in no position to negotiate with the Hollywood heavyweights and Universal studios.

Seoul-based Show East has since shut down and its executives have ceased all contact with Futabasha, further complicating legal proceedings, which began last week.

“We haven’t been able to confirm that Show East is bankrupt, and at this stage we’re not sure what effect this will have on the legal case,” the Daily Star quoted a spokesperson for Futabasha as saying.

But, Universal bosses are refusing to halt pre-production on Spielberg and Smith’s planned version and have given them the green light to continue work on the forthcoming movie. (ANI)

Obama “committed” to Israel’s peace and security

London, June 21 (ANI): The Obama Administration has reiterated its support for Israel following a survey that showed that only six percent of Jewish Israelis consider US President Barack Obama to be pro-Israel.

The White House declined to comment on the specifics of the poll. But National Security Council spokesman Mike Hammer told the Jerusalem Post: “We remain committed to peace and security for Israel.”

Hammer recalled the line from Obama’s recent speech in Cairo in which he said, “America’s strong bonds with Israel are well known. This bond is unbreakable,” one of several recent reiterations of strong US support for Israel.

A new Jerusalem Post-sponsored Smith Research poll had also found that one out of every two Israelis consider the policies of Obama’s administration more pro-Palestinian than pro-Israeli, while less than four in 10 said the policies were neutral.

The views were in stark contrast to the last poll published on May 17, on the eve of the meeting between Netanyahu and Obama at the White House.

The recent views expressed by Israelis follow Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s speech in support of a demilitarised Palestinian state.

However, Ira Forman of the National Jewish Democratic Council also emphasized that Obama has repeatedly affirmed the US-Israel special relationship and that he “is a great friend to Israel.”

“I have no doubt that Israelis will remember Barack Obama and his presidency as one that was tremendously favorable to Israel when all is said and done,” he said.

Matt Dorf, who did Jewish outreach for the Democratic National Committee during the presidential campaign, was more blunt when it came to the survey results.

“I don’t trust the poll,” he said, calling the Post a newspaper that has “not been friendly toward Obama,” he said. (ANI)

Fury over promotion of ‘dungeon dad’ Fritzl’s book as Father’s Day gift

London, June 19 (ANI): WH Smith, the British newspaper, books and stationery retailer, has come under fire for promoting a book on Austrian incest fiend Josef Fritzl as a Father’s Day gift.

The Crimes of Josef Fritzl, written by journalists Stefanie Marsh and Bojan Pancevski, details how the 74-year-old kept daughter Elisabeth captive for 24 years in a rat-infested cellar at Amstetten, Austria.

Fritzl, now serving life, raped her constantly and she had seven children by him.

Shocked shoppers could not believe when they saw the tome on a “Top 50 Books for Dad” display which also proclaimed “Dads Are Heroes”, reports The Sun.

Matt James, who was searching for a gift at the WH Smith branch in South London, said: “Are they mad? He’s probably the worst dad in the world. What he did to his children was horrible.”

The book promoted alongside more traditional gifts written by the likes of Dan Brown and Jeremy Clarkson.

Dad Ian Bennett, 44, said: “I’d wonder what they were trying to tell me. What person in their right mind would want to be reminded of that monster on Father’s Day?”

Rowena Langlois, 50, said: “It seems like some kind of sick joke. Has anyone in the company actually sat down and thought about this?”

WH Smith called the blunder “a mistake by one store”.

A spokeswoman said: “Thanks for bringing this to our attention. It is not national policy. We will rectify this immediately.” (ANI)

Cybersquatters hoping to cash in on Susan Boyle’s popularity

London, May 28 (ANI): Scottish singing sensation Susan Boyle is being targeted by cybersquatters, who want to make money from the global interest in Britain’s Got Talent’s contestant.

Boyle is among 33 of the 40 talent show contestants, who have had their domain names registered unofficially and fake Twitter accounts created by web savvy fans keen to cash in on their popularity.

The cybersquatters have snapped up a host of potentially valuable web addresses, such as susanboyle.co.uk, susanboyle.org and susan-boyle.com.

An American artist with the same name is also making the most of the singer’s fame – Susan K. Boyle from Texas is offering her domain name for a mere 25,000 dollars.

Sedo, the company marketing susanboyle.com, said the price was likely to have been set by the domain owner.

“Names like this are not really something we would recommend,” Sky News quoted director of business development Nora Nanayakkara as saying.

“The value of it really depends on the sustainability of Susan Boyle’s popularity and whether she’s just a one hit wonder,” Nanayakkara added.

Meanwhile, fan site susanboyle.co.uk is directing visitors to betting and bingo sites and seven Twitter users are pretending to be Boyle.

Nominet, the company responsible for.co.uk addresses, registers 50,000 domains a month and receives 50 complaints about the unfair use of domains.

Senior legal adviser Nick Wenban-Smith said: “The idea of offering a domain for sale has tended to die out. The most common use has been with words and brand names which attract a lot of internet traffic.” (ANI)

Only 1 in 3 Israelis thinks Obama is pro-Israel

Jerusalem, May 18 (ANI): Only 31 percent of Israelis consider US President Barack Obama’s approach pro-Israel, a survey conducted ahead of the meeting between Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu revealed.

According to a Smith Research poll, 31 percent Israelis labeled Obama pro-Israel, while 14 percent said he was pro-Palestinian and 40 percent felt he was neutral. The remaining 15 percent didn’t have any views on the issue.

The poll, conducted on 500 Israelis last week, has an error margin of 4.5 percent, The Jerusalem post reports.

Obama’s numbers contrast sharply with those of his predecessor, George W. Bush, whose administration was considered pro-Israel by 88 percent of the respondents.

Obama’s ratings may have gone down after condemnations of Israeli policies by US Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel and others.

Obama is expected to unveil his policies on the Arab-Israeli conflict in Cairo on June 4.

Currently, he is in a “policy review period” that he will conclude only after Netanyahu, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak visit the US by the end of the month.

Israelis, according to the poll, view governments of other European countries even less favourable than the US.

Among those nations, only the government of German Chancellor Angela Merkel was seen as being more pro-Israel (37 percent) than pro-Palestinian (21 percent).

The pro-Palestinian tilt was even more pronounced for British Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s government (a 14 percentage point spread). (ANI)

When Will Smith punched Charlize Theron in the face

New Delhi, May 13 (ANI): Charlize Theron was punched in the face by Will smith the very first time they worked together.

The duo starred together in 2000′s ‘The Legend of Bagger Vance’, and, at the same time, Will was preparing to portray legendary boxer Muhammad Ali.

And once, the ‘I am Legend’ actor got carried away showing off his fighting skills and punched the ‘Monster’ actress, right in her face, reports the China Daily.

“The first time I worked with him he punched me in the face. He was training for ‘Ali’. I encouraged him to show me a couple of moves. I was completely knocked out!” said Theron.

And the 33-year-old actress, who teamed up with the 40-year-old star again for superhero movie ‘Hancock’ last year, has claimed that she loves working with Will, despite falling victim to his powerful punch.

She added: “Seriously, though, I’d be happy to be punched out by Will anytime. He swore to me that it was an accident.” (ANI)

Brangelina are Most Powerful Celebrity Couple on the Planet

London, May 9 (ANI): Hollywood actors Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are the most powerful celebrity couple on the planet, according to a new study.

The Hollywood’s star pair scored a perfect 30 on 30 on a test that used a formula to work out how much stronger they are together than they would be individually.

The A-listers pipped David and Victoria Bechkam, who scored 25 on the test, to land the crown, reports The Telegraph.

The formula measures factors such as current and future earning power, public profile, career to date and predicted time left on the centre stage as a celebrity couple.

The list has been compiled by heartburn and indigestion brand Gaviscon Double Action.

TV presenting pair Vernon Kay and Tess Daly hugged the bottom of the list after scoring two points out of 30.

Psychotherapist Paula Hall was commissioned to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of celebrity couples using a Power of Two formula to see how well they work as a power couple.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes reached a respectable 18.3 for their joint success as a Hollywood golden couple.

Others in this category include, rapper Jay-Z and partner Beyonce Knowles who have a Power of Two score of 17.5 and actors Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith who score 15.5.

Will Smith says he can be the best ‘black Bond’ choice

Washington, May 7 (ANI): Will Smith has joined the likes of stars vying to become the first black James Bond, and has claimed that he’s the best choice for the iconic spy-role.

Rap mogul Diddy and Jamie Foxx have already forwarded their names as a possible replacement for the current 007, Daniel Craig.

And recently, ‘Obsessed’ star Idris Elba had claimed that he would be a better choice because he was British.

In fact, Diddy went to the extent of shooting a 007-themed TV ad for his fragrance line, just to show producers how he’d look as a black Bond.

However, the ‘I am Legend’ star, considered to be the most bankable star in showbiz, has said that he can be the best choice for producers.

“Puff probably lives the most like James Bond and Jamie Foxx got the swagger for James Bond. He can sing too, so he can add a new element to Bond, wooing the ladies,” Contactmusic quoted Smith as saying.

He added: “But I think I can guarantee the box office!” (ANI)

Has Dannii Minogue decided to quit ‘X Factor’ over feuds?

London, May 6 (ANI): It looks like Aussie singer Dannii Minogue has decided to quit as a co-judge on the ‘X Factor’ show.

Minogue, 37, who feels unsure after the feuds with Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh, has not signed her contract for the third series, even though first round auditions started two weeks ago.

And being compared to Girls Aloud member Cheryl Cole, who is one of the judges, has not been easy for her.

“It was tough for Dannii last year and she got a lot of negative press. A person can only take so much before asking, ‘Is it really worth it?’,” the Sun quoted a pal as saying.

“Dannii felt bullied by Sharon during her first series and that was tough, so she was looking forward to Cheryl joining the team last year.

“But that became a nightmare too when the rumour mill went into overdrive with stories about the two of them competing against each other for Simon Cowell’s attention.

“Simon is being patient so far, but she can’t leave it too much longer,” the pal added.

Minogue is still discussing her options with rugby boyfriend Kris Smith, and is expected to deliver her decision to X Factor producer Richard Holloway next week, ahead of the first set of auditions in front of the celebrity judges on June 8. (ANI)
