UK film industry facing most hostile environment in years, say insiders

London, Aug 25 (ANI): The stupendous success of Danny Boyle’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ is unlikely to be repeated, say insiders.

The ongoing credit crisis has hit independent film companies quite hard, as 59 such companies have wrapped up in past 18 months, while others are struggling for funds.

According to the report released by PricewaterhouseCoopers, indie companies such as Lucky 7, which made film Modigliani about the life of the Italian artist and Palm Tree UK, behind feature films Lost in Landscape and Winter Warrior, have gone bust.

The company Stormrider Films, which had scheduled to bring out “a British sci-fi feature film like no other ever produced in the UK” with CGI effects, called Kaleidoscope Man, has also gone bankrupt.

Christian Colson, producer of Slumdog Millionaire, fears that the trend might ultimately leave Britain drained of creativity

“It will be easier to get a 100m dollars film made than a really good 15m-dollar film,” The Independent quoted him as saying.

John Woodward, chief executive of the UK Film Council, admitted that independent film companies “are facing something of a perfect storm”.

“The debt which essentially financed their films is harder to secure… and the transition to digital has prompted a rise in piracy – so there’s a real strain on traditional fund raising.”

He, however, added that despite these challenges, the best projects were “still getting financed”.

The economic downturn has discouraged banks and high-risk investors to put in their money.

“Investors are more risk-averse than usual, so are either looking for more genre-driven material, more established directors, or bigger name cast before they’ll invest…,” said Andrea Calderwood, an independent film producer with Slate Films who won a BAFTA for the film The Last King of Scotland.

“Films are also taking longer to come together – either because the top talent is not available, or because financiers are taking longer to make decisions,” Calderwood added.

The PwC report stated that while big studio blockbusters were drawing huge audiences to cinema multiplexes, indie films were deteriorating.

It said: “The recession has sent hoards of consumers to the cinema and therefore large scale, expensive films such as Harry Potter remain in production and eagerly awaited. However, due to the credit crunch, sources of financing for smaller indie films have dried up – meaning many plots remain on the story board.” (ANI)

Rahman to offer free peace concert in Australia

Nevada (US), Aug.13 (ANI): Oscar winner musician A. R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire) will deliver a free concert in Sydney (Australia) to make a “statement of peace” in view of recent racial attacks on Indian students in Australia.

He reportedly said that this concert, to be held at Parramatta Park on January 16, was an attempt to “reunite culturally and spiritually” in view of the recent bad vibe. He hopes that it creates a “bridge of understanding and love” and breaks down “cultural misunderstandings”. Premier Nathan Rees of New South Wales has congratulated Rahman for this offer.

Prominent Australian entertainers should respond with a similar gesture of a free concert in a major city of India, said Indian American leader Rajan Zed.

Rahman, who has reportedly recorded sales of over 300 million, was called “Mozart of Madras” by Time magazine. Pop icon Michael Jackson reportedly approached him before his death to partner on a peace anthem on the lines of “We are the World”.

Rahman sees music as a “way to connect to spirituality and embrace it”. (ANI)

‘Slumdog’ child star enters his new home in Mumbai

Mumbai, July 8 (ANI): Azharuddin Ismail, child star of the Oscar-winning movie “Slumdog Millionaire” and his family members looked happy as they stepped into their new house in an upmarket Mumbai suburb.

“I am feeling very happy in my new house,” said Ismail.

Ismail and his family moved into the 250 square foot ground floor flat, which is in a modern building complex, with electricity and running water. It is a short drive away from Juhu.

“It’s a very nice house and we are really happy. It’s nice that now our environment would change. We’ll have all the facilities of water and other necessities. I am really thankful to Danny Sir, director of the film that he provided us with a new house,” said Samina Banu, Ismail’s mother.

Ismail got his new home in an upmarket Mumbai suburb on Saturday.

The Jai Ho Trust, named after the film’s award-winning track and set up by the producers, bought the Rs.21 lakh home on Ismail’s behalf and will give it to him when he turns 18.

Ismail’s earlier dwelling, a tarpaulin and sheet hut, was demolished by the civic authorities in May as it was illegal.

The Jai Ho Trust is looking for a house for Ismail’s co-star Rubina Ali, who still lives in a slum with her family. (ANI)

Mickey Rourke told Freida Pinto she was too young to be at Oscars

Washington, May 26 (ANI): Freida Pinto has revealed that Mickey Rourke advised her to go home to bed when they met at this year’s Oscars.

The ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ actress said that the ‘Wrestler’ star approached her at the prestigious awards ceremony in February – during which her film won eight of the prestigious accolades – and asked her to go home, insisting she was too young to attend the function.

“Mickey Rourke gave me a telling off at the Oscars. He said to me, ‘It’s way past your bedtime – go home,’ which was funny,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

Despite the success of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, the 24-year-old is still adjusting to socialising with Hollywood celebrities.

“Meryl Streep was the first A-lister I’d ever met, and it was the most bizarre feeling in my life when I nervously said, ‘Ma’am, I’d really like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you,’ and she said, ‘I know exactly who you are.’ Since then I’ve met Sean Penn, Dustin Hoffman, Clint Eastwood and Ben Stiller,” she said. ‘Slumdog millionaire’s child star loses shanty home in demolition

Mumbai, May 20 (ANI): Shanty home of Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire’s child star Rubina Ali was brought down by the civic authorities in Mumbai, an action which brought her family on road months after gaining a global appreciation.

Rubina’s house in a teeming slum was one of several settlements that were demolished by local authorities in Mumbai.

Rubina was out with her aunt when the civic authority workers and the police landed at their house and asked them to vacate their house. Her father, when tried to protest the demolishing workers, was allegedly beaten up with sticks.

“My father tried to intervene and asked them how they can demolish our houses without even giving us notices, then they beat my father with sticks. My father had to go to the dispensary as his hand was swollen. These people continued demolishing our houses,” Rubina said.

According to the slum dwellers, they had been living there for past many years and the authorities had not given them any prior notice before carrying out the demolition work.

“The government and the politicians all know that poor people live here, the police should not trouble the poor like us… Why do they trouble us? We have been living here for many years,” said Munni Qureshi, Rubina’s mother.

Eight-year-old Rubina played baby Latika, the film’s heroine, in the rags-to-riches romance about a poor Indian boy competing for love and money on a television game show.

Earlier this year, there was an outcry after pictures emerged of “Slumdog Millionaire’s” child stars living in squalor despite the movie’s box-office success and eight Academy Awards.

The film also sparked controversy for its name, deemed by some to be offensive to slum dwellers, and its treatment of the cast. Its depiction of the lives of poor Indians was dubbed “poverty porn” by sections of the media.

In February, the housing authority of Maharashtra state, of which Mumbai is the capital, said they would give Rubina Ali and fellow child star Ismail new houses. (ANI)

Oscar winning sound mixer of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ meets slum kids in Delhi

New Delhi, May 20 (ANI): The street kids of New Delhi had a rendezvous with Oscar winning sound mixer of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ Resul Pookutty here last evening.

Continuing his association with the rags to riches Oscar winning flick, Resul interacted with the homeless kids as part of the initiative of a self-help group ‘Butterflies India’, working for the cause of street children.

Resul posed for photographs and also chatted up the kids.

“It feels great because I have come here to spend time with them and to see how they are. So, it is also an attempt to bring the marginalized people in the forefront. Its time for change,” said Resul.

Winning an Oscar has changed the life of this small town sound mixer who shared the Sound Mixing Oscar with Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke for his work in the Danny Boyle’s film “Slumdog Millionaire”.

Post Slumdog Millionaire, work has started pouring in for Resul from both Indian and international filmmakers.

“Slumdog Millionaire”, a rags-to-riches story of a Mumbai slum dweller, who goes on to win 20 million dollars in a quiz show, was adjudged the best film.

“Slumdog Millionaire” was nominated for 10 Oscars, including best picture and best director. It already has won at the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild, and the British BAFTA awards.

AR Rahman and Resul Pookutty won three Oscars for India as the “Slumdog Millionaire” juggernaut swept the annual Hollywood awards.

Slumdog child star back in his bulldozed shanty home

Washington, May 17 (ANI): Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, child star of hit film “Slumdog Millionaire,” and his family have more or less rebuilt their shanty home after officials in Mumbai, India, demolished it.

The ten-year-old and his family moved back into what was left of their home on May 15.

Azharuddin, who played the young Salim in the Oscar-winning film, was asleep when a police officer woke him and ordered him to leave the shack.

“I was asleep when the policemen came. He threatened to beat me,” CBS News quoted Azharuddin as telling the reporters.

The family has claimed they had not been informed about the planned demolition.

Azharuddin’s mother said: “We’ve lived here for at least fifteen years. They didn’t show us any paperwork. They just came and started demolishing our hut.”

City officials said that they bulldozed the illegally built shanty homes to tackle overcrowding and will re-house residents. (ANI)

Mumbai’s civic authorities render ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ kids homeless

Mumbai, May 14 (ANI): Nearly 20 children who acted in the Oscar-winning “Slumdog Millionaire”, including Azharuddin Ismail, got a shock when civic authorities on Thursday demolished the polythene sheet-covered roof which used to house them in Garib Nagar slum area of Mumbai.

Ismail shot to fame after his role as Salim, the young role of the movie’s central character.

Ismail was sleeping when the civic authorities landed with the bulldozers and asked his family to vacate the house.

The actor’s family alleged that the demolition was carried out without any prior notice.

“They did not inform us. No notice was given to us. They suddenly came and ran the bulldozer on our houses and broke everything in the slum area,” said Samina Banu, Azharuddin’s mother.

Ismail Shaikh, father of Azharuddin Ismail, quipped that their life has become similar to a ‘dog’ as the earthmoving machinery of the civic authorities bulldozed the houses of the poor families without any notice.

“Its not about Azhar or me. It’s about all the poor people here. They made a movie ‘Slumdog’ and similarly we are living life of a dog here. Anybody can come here and run a bulldozer over our houses,” Ismail Shaikh said.

Indian authorities had promised new homes for Azharuddin and his co-star Rubina Ali after their return from the Oscars since they had been residing in slums.

But that promise seems to have gone into oblivion and Azharuddin has now been forced to live on streets in contrast to his stint of walking the red carpet at the Oscars in Los Angeles.

The civic authorities razed down 12 other huts in the area during the demolition drive. (ANI)

Chandigarh NGO transforming slum children’s lives by theatre

Chandigarh, May 11 (ANI): A Chandigarh-based non-governmental organisation is influencing the lives of slum children through theatre and also training them in vocational pursuits.
Started in 1992 by a city-based theatre artist, Zulfikar Khan, Theatre Age has been nurturing the talent of slum children by providing them formal, vocational and theatre training.
It started with 25 slum children making paper bags out of newspapers and supplying them to various institutions.

Zukfikar Jhan sees theatre as the perfect medium for poor slum children to express their talent.
“We requested the children to stop working. They were so good in studies and in plays. They are very good actors. As far as the films are concerned, according to me, it is a fare use of talent and creativity. Like in `Slumdog Millionaire’, a film based on slum kids won the Oscar’s but the artist has got nothing. This is not the case with us. We have got good results. The children who have grown up, have started their own groups. They still work with us,” said Zulfikar Jhan.

The NGO today also helps its children to get admission in various schools.

U.S.-based Ewan came to Chandigarh as a tourist, but as soon he found out about `Theatre Age’ – a school for the slum children. And, he decided to spend a month to teach and share his experiences with them.

Reminiscing the initial days, Zulfiqar Khan, President of Theatre Age, says how every year he used to enable four to five kids to reach the fifth grade assessment here.

Then some cases of students were brought his knowledge who were finding it difficult to continue study in fifth grade, as they were also expected to work. But the NGO helped them in such a situation.

In 1993, Theatre Age’s group gave its first full-fledged performance `Raja Aur Kisan’ or the king and the farmer. It has never looked back since then, taking up social issues like environment, female foeticide, AIDS and de-addiction.

Thanks to this NGO’s endeavours, that a shoeshine boy has become a make-up man with a TV channel, a vagabond into a soldier, while some others are conducting theatre workshops themselves.
Interestingly, this NGO takes newspapers as public donation instead of any monetary help. These newspapers are donated by its 500 members and then further sold for revenue purposes. By Sunil Sharma (ANI)
