Stay-at-home parents ‘most stressed workers’

London, September 12 (ANI): Parents who stay at home and look after the household are the most stressed out, a new UK study claims.

According to a research conducted by Mindlab Organisation, mothers or fathers who do household chores are more frazzled than those with traditionally high-pressure jobs, like city trading, teaching or nursing.

Stress levels were investigated in British adults as per their “work” roles – stay-at-home parents, taxi drivers, teachers, nurses and city dealers.

The conclusion was reached by measuring levels of the stress hormone cortisol throughout an average working day.

It was found that stay-at-home parents proved to be the most under pressure. Nurses ranked second in the list, followed by the traders, then teachers and finally, taxi drivers.

A bio-monitoring equipment was used to measure and record the heart rate and skin conductance.

The participants were connected to the equipment and tested over a seven-hour period.

Also, samples of saliva were taken at crucial junctures during the day to measure cortisol, which is a direct indicator of stress.

“The key here is the degree of control each of these professionals feel able to exercise over their lives,” the Daily Express quoted Dr David Lewis, who was part of the research, as saying.

“Stay-at-home parents receive little or no specific training and are furthermore typically isolated from other adults for much of the day,” he added.

Psychologist Jenni Trent Hughes said: “The answer is simply to be selfish and take some time out. After 21 years of running around after the family, pets, supermarket and the house, women have earned it.

“If you’re not taking care of your- self then how can you properly take care of anyone else?

“If you’re ratty or short-tempered, tired or at your wits’ end how can you possibly be the best you can be for your partner, children, family and last but definitely not least yourself?” (ANI)

Men’s sweat ‘boosts their attractiveness in the eyes of women’

London, Sept 11 (ANI): A naturally present chemical in men’s sweat may act as a primitive love potion that increases their attractiveness in women’s eyes, says a new study.

The substance is derived from the male sex hormone testosterone.

To reach the conclusion, Tamsin Saxton of the University of St Andrews studied the influence of androstadienone by dabbling a drop of it on the upper lip of 50 women who took part in the evening trial before they “dated” a series of men.

From analyses, researchers found that women of all ages rated the men slightly higher on a scale of attractiveness when given the substance, compared to water or clove oil, but the effect was greatest in younger women aged between 18 and 22, reports The Independent.

“For some of the women we gave them androstadienone and we put it in clove oil solution so they just smelt clove oil. Some of the women had clove oil alone, and the third group had just water so there was no odour at all,” she told the British Science Festival.

“We got the women to mark how attractive they thought the men were on a one to seven scale after they interacted with each man,” she said.

“We found that the women given androstadienone had given slightly higher ratings of attractiveness to the men. That suggested this constituent of sweat does seem to have some kind of impact on attraction,” she told the festival.

“Some people don’t seem to be able to smell it all, some people say it smells OK or a bit sweaty, whereas others say it smells really awful, like babies’ nappies,” Saxton said.

According to the expert, one hypothesis is that it could be a “pheromone”, or chemical messenger that acts between individuals in much the same way that hormones act as messengers within the body.

“It’s something that people investigate on the topic of pheromones. When you talk of animal pheromones, they are involved in very specific reactions,” Saxton said.

“People do value somebody’s natural skin smell and it’s worth bearing in mind that this may be part of your appeal – how you smell naturally,” she told the festival. (ANI)

Vitamin C can help protect DNA damage of skin cells

Washington, Sept 10 (ANI): Researchers at the University of Leicester and Institute for Molecular and Cellular Biology in Portugal have found that vitamin C can help protect DNA damage of skin cells and lead to better skin regeneration.

Previous research has shown that DNA repair is upregulated in people consuming vitamin C supplements.

In the new study, the researchers have provided some mechanistic evidence.

The researchers used affymetrix microarray, for looking at gene expression, and the ‘Comet’ assay to study DNA damage

“The exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation increases in summer, often resulting in a higher incidence of skin lesions. Ultraviolet radiation is also a genotoxic agent responsible for skin cancer, through the formation of free radicals and DNA damage,” said lead researcher Tiago Duarte, formerly of the University of Leicester, and now at the Institute for Molecular and Cellular Biology in Portugal.

“Our study analysed the effect of sustained exposure to a vitamin C derivative, ascorbic acid 2-phosphate (AA2P), in human dermal fibroblasts.

“We investigated which genes are activated by vitamin C in these cells, which are responsible for skin regeneration.

“The results demonstrated that vitamin C may improve wound healing by stimulating quiescent fibroblasts to divide and by promoting their migration into the wounded area. Vitamin C could also protect the skin by increasing the capacity of fibroblasts to repair potentially mutagenic DNA lesions,” Duarte added.

The researchers hope that the results will be of great relevance to the cosmetics industry.

“The study indicates a mechanism by which vitamin C could contribute to the maintenance of a healthy skin by promoting wound healing and by protecting cellular DNA against damage caused by oxidation,” said Dr Marcus S. Cooke from the Department of Cancer Studies and Molecular Medicine and Department of Genetics, at the University of Leicester.

“These findings are particular importance to our photobiology interests, and we will certainly be looking into this further,” Cooke added.

The findings have been published in the journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine. (ANI)

Pak Qaeda hand in 2006 trans-Atlantic bomb plot revealed

London, Sep.8 (ANI): New evidence put before a British jury during a retrial of three Brit Muslim convicts suggests that the men used code words to discuss their plans with an al-Qaeda fixer based in Pakistan.

The e-mails and conversations suggest that the plot was in its final stages, possibly days away from execution in 2006.

The seven daily flights highlighted by the three plotters were: 14.15 United Airlines Flight 931 to San Francisco; 15.00 Air Canada Flight 849 to Toronto; 15.15 Air Canada Flight 865 to Montreal; 15.40 United Airlines Flight 959 to Chicago; 16.20 United Airlines Flight 925 to Washington; 16.35 American Airlines Flight 131 to New York; 16.50 American Airlines Flight 91 to Chicago.

According to The Telegraph and the Daily Express, the batteries the gang planned to use as part of their detonators were bought in Pakistan.

An ingredient in the bomb mix was the orange soft drink Tang – sold in Pakistan – which had a high sugar content to aid the explosion.

A British intelligence source said: “The use of drink bottles sold in Pakistan and batteries sold in Pakistan underline the plot’s ties to that country. The foot soldiers were from Britain – but the organisers were in Pakistan.”

A security source said of the conspiracy: “It was very clever and the airport scanners would not have picked up the devices at all.”

Prosecutor Peter Wright told the Woolwich Crown Court in South East London how the would-be bombers were “a cell of home-grown terrorists activated and directed by a designated leader in Pakistan.”

That was confirmed by a government source in Pakistan, who said the plot was believed to have originated “with al-Qaeda in Afghanistan.”

Seized e-mails showed the chain of terror stretched from there, across the lawless border to Pakistan, to London and to the woods of High Wycombe where explosives were buried.

The aim was to mirror the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, which killed 259 passengers and 11 in the Scottish town.

Aliases exposed during the trial revealed the terror kingpin in Pakistan was dubbed “Paps” or “Papa”.

Ali called himself Imran and Chacha and also set up email accounts in the bogus names Tippu Khan and Jameel Masood.

His co-conspirators used aliases such as Fatty, Arro and Nigga.

Hydrogen peroxide was known as “aftershave”, police surveillance as “skin problems” and martyrdom videos were referred to as “wedding tapes”.

It is also thought that the bomb makers received training at an al-Qaeda camp in Pakistan.

A mystery Pakistani, thought to be a top al-Qaeda envoy, made contact with the three would-be suicide bombers during a flying visit to Britain in June 2006.

Experts who tested the explosive mix on the aircraft were horrified.

Punjab authorities launch drive to uproot “Congress Grass”

Nag Khurd (Amritsar), Sep.5 (ANI): Farmers in Punjab are confronted with an unusual problem these days. A weed described as “Congress Grass” has covered all soil-bunds in the fields here and the administration is taking up measures to educate farmers about how to obviate it.

The “Congress Grass” is said to be a major biological pollutant of the environment. It is described as one of the seven most destructive weeds of the world.

Locally known as ‘Gajar Buti’, the Congress Grass has become an ecological nuisance especially on sides of link roads and other waste lands. It causes Asthma, Allergy and skin diseases to humans and also the animals.

It becomes a host for dangerous insects. Nowadays the vast growth of this weed can also be seen on roadsides and other wastelands.

Observing its harmful effects on the fields, the agriculture department has decided to pull out the “Congress grass” from its roots.

It is a mechanical technique in which fodder cutter machines attached to tractors are to be used to clear the area covered up by Congress Grass.

The novel technique of mechanical removal of this weed from the sides of link roads and wastelands in Amritsar district was started on Thursday.

Authorities are spreading public awareness among farmers through demonstrations about the new technique with the help of fodder cutting machine by eradicating Congress Grass.

With the help of the machines, the farmers are able to get rid of this menace of “Congress Grass” more effectively and rapidly.

The idea to use fodder cutting machine for this purpose has been conceived by Deputy Commissioner, Amritsar, Kahn Singh Pannu.

On Thursday, Pannu demonstrated to farmers by driving a tractor in Nag Khurd village in Majitha area about how to pull out the “Congress Grass”.

Talking to ANI Pannu said, this is first time in Punjab that they are cutting the hazardous weed “Congress Grass” with fodder cutter machines and it is giving god results.

According to Pannu, Congress Grass is not only harmful to the crop but also causes severe skin problems like rashes and itching and some time cause respiratory diseases.

“Through demonstration, we are creating awareness and educating the farmers to get rid of this unwanted weed by applying new methods,” Pannu said.

With the help of department of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Rural Development, about 20 Fodder Cutter Machines in the district will be employed for the removal of the Congress Grass from the berms and the waste lands in the district.

The farmers, who own these machines, will operate them to remove the weed and they will be paid for their services by the Panchayats (village councils).

“Since these day we have ample time so we would pull out the Congress Grass by applying the new method,” said Satnam Singh, a farmer, while adding that it is more convenient as there has been always a shortage of labour in Punjab.

“Apart from the damage to crop through reduced yields, Congress Grass is weakening the strength of the land,” said Inder Preet Singh, another farmer.

Appreciating the efforts being made by administrative authorities, Singh said he feels that agriculture department should organize more camps so that the more farmers could benefit by eradicating the Congress Grass from their field. By Ravinder Singh Robin(ANI)

Canadian Govt to challenge racial refugee status decision

Ottawa, Sep. 4 (ANI): The Canadian Government has decided to challenge a decision by the country’s Immigration and Refugee Board, which granted refugee status to a white South African because of the colour of his skin.

Brandon Huntley, 31, who had been illegally staying in Canada from 2006, argued that his safety would be in danger if he returned to South Africa, The Globe and Mail reports.

He also claimed he’d been the victim of seven attempted robberies and called a “white dog” and “settler.” He did not report any of the incidents to police, saying he did not trust them.

His refugee claim was accepted by lone board member William Davis, who noted that Huntley had scars on his body to support his account of the attacks.

The panel’s decision infuriated South African officials who labelled Canada as “racist.”

South Africa’s top diplomat has been urging Canadian officials all week to challenge the decision in court.

On Thursday, a spokesperson for Immigration Minister Jason Kenney confirmed Ottawa will seek leave to appeal the decision that allowed Huntley to live in Canada as a refugee.

“The government is going to be seeking leave to appeal the IRB’s decision to grant Huntley refugee status [to] the Federal Court,” spokesman Alykhan Velshi said.

“Our department’s lawyers, as well as those from the Department of Justice reviewed the IRB ruling over the last several days and we’re going to seek leave to appeal and we’ll be making submissions to the court in the fullness of time, and it would be inappropriate to comment further because the matter will be before the courts.” (ANI)

Polluted Sutlaj River water causing skin disease

Ropar (Punjab), Aug 30 (ANI): Hazardous industrial waste seeping into the Sutlaj River flowing through Ropar District in Punjab has contaminated the water to the extent that people are getting skin diseases and stomach ailments.

Environmentalists blamed cement and thermal factories along the Sutlaj River for polluting the water, apart from effluents released into the river from factories in Himachal Pradesh.

“The industrial effluents released from a thermal plant near Ghanoli in Ropar is going into the river and percolating into the ground water. When people draw the water from a hand pump or a well, it has lot of sulphur and other chemicals,” said Jaswant Singh, an environmentalist in Ropar.

People living in about 20 villages mainly use ground water, which has a high sulphur content. They say the water drawn from a well or hand pump looks yellow and tastes weird and it is inflicting skin diseases.

“We can’t work in this water for long. If you do, you get various skin diseases and it also upsets the stomach,” said Jaswant Singh, a patient.

There has been a sudden increase in the number of people visiting health centres due to various water-borne diseases.

“Contaminated water is the main problem here. We are getting lot of patients with skin disease, boils, diarrhea and cholera,” said Amandeep Kaur, a pharmacist at a local health centre.

Novel method to make safer human stem cells uses just one gene

London, Aug 29 (ANI): Inching closer to curing diseases like Parkinson’s using cells generated from a patient’s own body, researchers have successfully reprogrammed human nerve cells back to an embryo-like state by using just a single gene.

It is known that embryonic stem cells are pluripotent – they can develop into any of the body’s cell types.

But such cells are not available in large numbers, as they can only be harvested from a donated egg or embryo, and, for ethical reasons, most countries have laws restricting their use.

In 2006, Shinya Yamanaka and his colleagues at Kyoto University in Japan successfully made mouse cells pluripotent by reprogramming skin cells into a state like embryo cells.

They did so by using retroviruses to insert four genes – known as “factors” – into the cells’ DNA.

They repeated the trick a year later with human cells.

However, using genes and retroviruses in this way increases the risk of the cell becoming cancerous, not just because tinkering with DNA has that effect, but also because two of the four factors are known to cause cancer.

In a bid to make these promising cells in a safe way, Hans Scholer’s team at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Biomedicine in Münster, Germany, has been working to achieve pluripotency using fewer factors.

Last year, they did this with the two factors that do not cause cancer, and now they have simplified the recipe further, doing it with just one.

“Remarkably, it turns out that three of these four essential factors are already expressed in human neural stem cells – although not in skin cells – so we only needed to add one factor, OCT4,” New Scientist quoted Boris Greber, a member of the team, as saying.

He said that the cells from neural tissue are much easier to reprogram than skin cells, and are less prone to mutations.

It is much harder to get a sample of neural stem cells than skin cells, as it can be done via extracting the cells from the dental pulp of teeth, said Greber.

Inserting even one gene into the chromosome of a cell still permanently modifies its DNA, which is why the new method will remain a lab tool instead of being allowed in the clinic.

However, the researchers are hoping that it will help them improve methods for producing embryonic stem cells.

“Ideally, we will be able to find a chemical that does the same job of expressing the factor without the need for a gene,” said Greber.

Earlier this year, researchers in California managed just that when they reprogrammed mouse fibroblasts using a cocktail of proteins.

That technique did not involve inserting genes, and, thus, shouldn’t raise the cancer risk. But that was far less efficient.

“Without stable intervention using viruses, the frequency of reprogramming goes down and you have to wait a long time. We don’t have the perfect method yet,” said Greber.

The study has been published in the journal Nature. (ANI)

Nude model busted at Met wishes prudish New Yorkers accept some bare skin

New York, August 28 (ANI): A nude model, who was arrested on charges of public lewdness at the Met on Wednesday, has said that she wants New Yorkers to stop being so prudish, and start accepting some bare skin.

“I want people to have the freedom to express themselves. I want the city to drop the charges,” the New York Post quoted Kathleen Neill, 26, as saying.

The Arizona native said that the purpose behind her stunt in the museum’s Hall of Arms and Armor was to get people thinking about the bare essentials of art.

“I would love to be able to go to museums and see stuff like this happen on any scale,” she said.

She was busted after whipping off her clothes, and streaking through the exhibit hall as photographer Zach Hyman snapped away.

Neill was grabbed by guards, and arrested on charges of public lewdness. (ANI)

Large variations exist in peoples’ ability to eliminate arsenic from body

Washington, Aug 27 (ANI): A new study has shown that large variations exist in peoples’ ability to eliminate potentially toxic substance arsenic from the body.

In the study, Kevin Francesconi and colleagues found that some people eliminate more than 90 percent of the arsenic consumed in the diet while others store arsenic in their bodies, where it can have harmful effects.

Health effects from chronic arsenic exposure include skin and internal cancers, cardiovascular disease, and possibly diabetes.

Researchers say that drinking water in many parts of the world, including some regions of the United States, contain amounts of arsenic that exceed the World Health Organization’s maximum acceptable levels.

The study also found that consumption of seafood is another major source of arsenic contamination.

The scientists describe monitoring arsenic excretion in the urine of human volunteers.

They found that ability to eliminate arsenic from the body varied greatly, with some participants excreting up to 95 percent of the ingested arsenic but others eliminating as little as four percent.

“This observed individual variability in handling [arsenic] exposure has considerable implications for the risk assessment of arsenic ingestion,” the study states.

It adds that further study is needed to assess potential risks to humans consuming seafood products.

“The data presented here suggest that the long held view that seafood arsenic is harmless because it is present mainly as organoarsenic compounds needs to be reassessed,” the study states.

The research is scheduled for the Sept. 21 issue of ACS’s Chemical Research in Toxicology, a monthly journal. (ANI)

MJ’s ex wife tipped cops about drug doc

London, August 27 (ANI): Michael Jackson’s former wife reportedly tipped cops about how doctor Arnold Klein helped supply the star with powerful drugs.

Debbie Rowe, who used to work as an assistant at Klein’s Beverly Hills clinic, was said to have secretly informed authorities how the singer used aliases to get the drugs from the plastic surgeon, who treated Jackson for 20 years.

Court papers apparently state that detectives got a tip-off from “an unknown female caller”, who revealed Jackson used names such as Omar Arnold, Fernand Diaz and Peter Madonie when he saw the medic.

Klein was purportedly accused of helping Jackson stock sedatives including powerful anaesthetic propofol that is believed to have caused his death.

“Rowe holds Klein totally responsible for Jackson’s drug addiction,” the Sun quoted sources as saying.

“She believes there is no way he could have got hooked without the help of Klein – and she is potentially the only one who can prove it.

“She must have suspected what was going on for years.

“She could really put the boot into Klein and she has good reason to. It makes her skin crawl to think Klein is the biological father of her kids, like reports suggest,” the sources added. (ANI)

Foul odour from industrial chicken rendering facilities may soon be history

Washington, Aug 27 (ANI): A research team led by Indian-origin scientist from North Carolina State University has devised a new technique that can help eliminate foul odour and air pollutants from industrial chicken rendering facilities.

Rendering facilities take animal byproducts (e.g., skin, bones, feathers) and process them into useful products such as fertilizer. However, the rendering process produces extremely foul odours.

Currently, the industry uses chemical “scrubbers” to remove odor-causing agents, but this technique is not very effective.

Furthermore, some of the odour-causing compounds are aldehydes, which can combine with other atmospheric compounds to form ozone – triggering asthma attacks and causing other adverse respiratory health effects.

According to Praveen Kolar, assistant professor of biological and agricultural engineering, the inexpensive treatment process uses ozone and specially-designed catalysts to break down the odour-causing compounds.

The new technique with an effective filtration system takes advantage of catalytic oxidation to remove these odour-causing pollutants.

This process takes place at room temperature, so there are no energy costs, and results in only two byproducts: carbon dioxide and pure water.

The researchers developed the catalysts by coating structures made of activated carbon with a nanoscale film made of cobalt or nickel oxides.

“We used activated carbon because its porous structure gives it an extremely large surface area meaning that there is more area that can be exposed to the odorous agents,” said Kolar.

The cobalt and nickel oxide nanofilms make excellent catalysts, Kolar explains, “because they increase the rate of the chemical reaction between the odour-causing compounds and the ozone, making the process more efficient. They are also metals that are both readily available and relatively inexpensive.” (ANI)

Malawi kids ‘taking in 50 ciggies a day’

London, August 25 (ANI): Thousands of kids in Malawi are taking in 50 cigarettes worth of nicotine a day due to their employment as child labourers on the country’s tobacco fields, warns an organisation.

According to a study by Plan, the kids showed an array of nicotine poisoning symptoms, such as severe headaches, abdominal pain, muscle weakness and breathlessness.

California university medical professor Neal Benowitz explained nicotine poisoning, also called Green Tobacco Sickness, was more severe in youngsters due to their underdeveloped tolerance level against smoking as compared to adults.

“The brain of a child or adolescent is particularly vulnerable to long-lasting adverse neurobehavioral effects of nicotine exposure,” Sky News quoted Benowitz as saying.

The report said: “Child labourers, some as young as five, are suffering severe physical symptoms from absorbing up to 54mg a day of dissolved nicotine through their skin – the equivalent of 50 average cigarettes.”

Plan also revealed that some of the kids toiled up to 12 hours a day, without protective clothing and were paid less than the equivalent of 1p an hour.

The study further pointed towards a lack of research into the long-term effects of Green Tobacco Sickness in kids, but “experts believe that it could seriously impair their development”. (ANI)

“It’s like, I’m sorry, maybe there are a lot of women who keep their bras on while they have sex . . . I don’t happen to be one of them. I don’t think the naked body is particularly shocking or interesting,” the New York Post quoted her as telling the new issue of Nylon.

‘I really think Ali feared me’, says ‘Smoking’ Joe Frazier

London, Aug 23 (ANI): Former World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Joe Frazier, who is famous for his trilogy of Heavyweight Championship fights with Muhammad Ali, has said that he still retains a disdain for the treatment he received from Ali.

Frazier, who for a decade had impaired vision in his left eye, could not see after Ali punched his right eye closed.

The history between the pair, which is featured in a DVD released this week, demonstrates the depth of the feud, highlighted by Ali’s verbal assaults on race and religious grounds.

“Ali was nervous and he taunted me, saying I was ugly and all sorts of things. But, I think that was his way of building himself up, by running off at the mouth,” The Herald Sun quotes Frazier, as saying.

“He had a lot of respect for me. And, I think he feared I could beat him. So, he used his tongue before the fights to try to upset me and to get his own adrenaline going. I really think he feared me,” he added.

Despite protests, Frazier’s corner threw in the towel before the 15th round, which meant that Frazier had lost the rematch. Frazier was never again the force he used to be and accepts his place in history, aware that a few seconds between rounds 14 and 15 in Manila could have changed the world’s perception of his talents.

“You have corners and trainers and managers who care. I had impaired vision in my left eye and I was struggling to see out of the other. I didn’t hold anything against anybody for the fight being stopped,” Frazier said.

“I would have been in real trouble if both my eyes closed. But, to learn Ali was ready to quit at the same time my corner called an end to the fight was a bit disappointing. He ended up in more physical strife than me, but he got the verdict and all the accolades that go with winners,” he added.

The 65-year-old further said that all that happened in “The Thrilla in Manilla” fight is history now and everyone must move on.

“I am at peace with the world. I could never understand why he went on at the mouth about so many things. I’ve always believed it doesn’t matter what colour your skin is. I couldn’t figure out what he was on about. I can only hope he asks the Lord for forgiveness for the wrongs he did me,” Frazier said. (ANI)

Painless ‘microneedle’ patch may end jab fear

Washington, Aug 20 (ANI): Scientists at the Georgia Institute of Technology have designed a painless patch that may someday make hypodermic needles as well as annual flu shots a thing of the past.

These patches, lined with tiny ‘microneedles,’ could make treatment of diabetes and a wide range of other diseases safer, more effective and less painful, according to the researchers.

Used as tiny hypodermic needles, they could improve treatment of macular degeneration and other diseases of the eye.

“It’s our goal to get rid of the need for hypodermic needles in many cases and replace them with a patch that can be painlessly and simply applied by a patient,” said Mark Prausnitz from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

“If you can move to something that’s as easy to apply as a band-aid, you’ve now opened the door for people to self-administer their medicine without special training,” he added.

Prausnitz said that advances in the electronics industry in microfabricating very small objects like transistors enabled the development of microneedles.

“We’ve built off those technological advances to address a need in medicine. We’re trying to bring the two worlds together,” he said.

Each needle is only a few hundred microns long, about the width of a few strands of human hair.

Prausnitz and his colleagues suggest that the microneedle patch could, for instance, replace yearly trips to the doctor for flu shots.

In a collaboration with Emory University, Prausnitz and his team administered flu vaccines via conventional injections and microneedle patches in mice.

After exposing the mice to the flu, they compared the resulting immune response and antibody levels. They found that the antibody levels were the same by either route.

Taking a closer look, they discovered that microneedle delivery resulted in a better protective immune response by other measures.

“Toward the goal of a flu vaccine patch, we are continuing the animal studies, but we’re also working toward our first human trial, which we hope to do in 2010,” Prausnitz said.

Microneedles are not just able to deliver drugs through the skin they can also be used for targeted drug delivery in the eye.

They may help create an improved treatment for macular degeneration.

The study has been presented at the 238th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society. (ANI)

Pink concert alerts Oz woman to her ballooning breast implant

Cairns, Aug 20 (ANI): An Aussie woman, who woke up with one breast double the size of the other, said that had she not attended American singer Pink’s concert, she would not have known there was a problem with her breast implant.

Cattle station worker Kimberley Koy’s breast had ballooned out overnight after a plane trip to Sydney to see Pink perform, and fearing that it might be breast cancer, she immediately visited her doctor.

But at the clinic, Koy came to know that the breast problem had started a week earlier, when she was stabbed in the chest by a runaway cow’s horn while working on a Cape York property.

Koy, who has C-cup silicone gel breast implants, had brushed the incident off as the horn did not break her skin or leave a bruise, and was oblivious to the damage it had done to her implant until it popped up after the plane flight.

“When I told the doctor I’d flown she said, ‘That makes perfect sense because air pressure forced out the silicone’,” Cairns.com.au quoted her as saying.

“I could have gone years without knowing.

“When I woke up the day after the plane trip it was double the size of my right one … I thought I had breast cancer.

“If I hadn’t have gone to the Pink concert I wouldn’t have known my breast was leaking,” she said.

Koy said that her breast had since shrunk, but still edged out further than the right one.

“It was like a coconut to an orange; it was bloody weird and incredibly noticeable,” she said.

“I just wanted everyone to hear my story because I think it is very funny.

“It felt like one breast had filled up with milk and the other hadn’t,” she added. (ANI)

Birds love soaking in the sun as much as humans do

London, Aug 19 (ANI): Its not just humans who enjoy soaking up in the sun on the beach, for birds are fond of sunbathing too, according to the bird charity RSPB.

The charity revealed that they receive almost 100 calls during hot spells from people who are concerned with watching birds lying with their feathers and wings exposed to the sun.

However, they have said that such state of rest is not problematic, as the animals simply sunbath in this position.

Studies from the University of New Mexico have suggested that birds sun themselves to soothe their skin after heavy rain, which can cause them to suddenly lose their feathers.

The researchers believe that the sun helps straighten the birds’ feathers, and helps the preen oil to spread through.

“People become concerned about these birds, because they seem to have a glazed expression in their eyes, because they are not focusing on anything, because they are entranced by the sun,” the Telegraph quoted Gemma Rogers from the RSPB as saying.

She added: “They don’t let themselves overheat at all. The feathers would protect them as well, so I don’t think they need the factor 30.”

However, the biggest concern, according to her, is that the predators will attack while the birds enjoy a peaceful moment in the sun.

“They are on the ground, they have their heads up, their legs wide open, but usually they fly away once a predator approaches. Their hearing is very acute as well, so even if they aren’t focusing they will hear something coming,” she said.

While blackbirds are the most commonly spotted sunbathers, pigeons and sparrows also enjoy the sun.

Rogers said that sparrows apparently enjoy going to the beach as much as humans.

“Sparrows often find a hot sandy area as well to have a sand or dust bath. That looks really strange. They bed themselves down and get in there and cover their feathers,” she said. (ANI)

Mitch Johnson is loving his newly discovered art of sledging

London, Aug.12 (ANI): Australian left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Johnson is loving his newly discovered art of sledging, and said he will ramp it up during next week’s fifth and final Test at The Oval after rediscovering his form and confidence at Headingley.

“I don’t normally say too much, but maybe it was a bit of a surprise to those guys for me to say something,” Johnson said.

“It felt good to do it and I’ll continue to do it. Just keep puffing my chest out and keep getting into the contest … a stare here and there. I think that’s definitely worked for me and I’ve definitely got a lot more confidence now and really enjoying it again,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted him, as saying.

The rejuvenated pacer also admitted that the English crowd had got under his skin in the second Test, causing him to lose focus and nearly his spot in the side.

“I didn’t really know where they were going, to be honest. I bowled a lot of wide, short balls. That was a pretty tough moment for me. To be copping it from the English crowd, I didn’t know how to deal with it at the time. It was the most I’ve copped it,” Jonson said of that experience at Lord’s.

There were no more mocking songs to be heard after Johnson’s excellent spell of 5-69 to wrap up the fourth Test inside three days.

Johnson is not a bowler who responds well to intense coaching. These technical considerations got inside Johnson’s head earlier this tour, when he was wound up and unable to think clearly. It took a simple word with vice-captain Michael Clarke during a tour match in Northamptonshire, between the second and third Tests, for Johnson to click again.

“During that Lord’s Test, I can remember clearly I was thinking about wrist position, I was thinking about front-arm pull-down, I was thinking about running in, I was thinking about everything that I could,” Johnson said.

“Edgbaston was totally different. I just ran in, didn’t worry about it. Michael Clarke said to me at the practice game, when he came out to field, ‘Just run in and bowl fast. That’s what you do best’. That’s what I’ve been trying to do: run in, hit my areas and not worry about technical stuff out on the field. It’s been a bit different than normal. The first two Tests especially, I felt a bit more pressure than I have in the past. I’ve started to handle it a lot more now,” Johnson said.

He also said issues taking place off the field did not affect when he was on the field.

He was referring to the much publicised spat between his mother, Vicky Harber, and his girlfriend, Jessica Bratich.

Johnson has 16 wickets at 32.62 for the series, and has retained his No.3 ranking on the ICC’s top Test bowlers list after the spirited fight back in Leeds. (ANI)

Ex-England coach Fletcher reignites feud with Ponting

London, July 15 (ANI): Former England coach Duncan Fletcher has claimed that Australian captain Ricky Ponting knows nothing about the spirit of cricket.

Fletcher, who was abused by Ponting during the 2005 Ashes over the use of substitute fieldsman Gary Pratt, said England would have been delighted to get under Ponting’s skin in the Cardiff Test.

He claimed England captain Andrew Strauss would have been “amused” to receive a blast from Ponting over England’s time-wasting tactics.

“If any side in the world doesn’t play within the spirit of the game, it’s Ponting’s Australians, yet here he is sitting in judgment on England because he’s frustrated that his bowlers failed to complete the job,” Fox Sports quoted Fletcher, as saying.

“We’re left with the ridiculous situation of being told off by an Australia captain for transgressing cricket’s spirit – a notion he seems to only vaguely understand himself. Ponting has to be careful. Someone needs to sit down and ask him what he understands by the spirit of the game,” he added.

Fletcher’s explosive outburst – in his column for The Guardian newspaper – will raise Ashes tensions another notch going into Thursday’s second Test at Lord’s.

In 2005, Ponting let fly with a furious outburst at Fletcher when he was run-out by England substitute fielder Pratt during Australia’s fourth Test loss at Trent Bridge.

Now Fletcher insists Ponting’s frustration is starting to overflow over as it did in England four years ago.

He claims that Ponting turned on a petulant performance in Cardiff when he confronted umpire Aleem Dar over a disputed catch at silly mid-off.

“England will now be thinking that the Australians are getting very prickly – just like four years ago – and that’s a good sign for Andrew Strauss and the team. The pressure is on Australia now after their bowlers messed up, and that’s something England can take advantage of,” said Fletcher. (ANI)
