Suzanne Somers says chemotherapy killed Patrick Swayze

New York, Sep 19 (ANI): Actress Suzanne Somers, who is herself a cancer survivor, thinks that chemotherapy has killed Patrick Swayze.

The ‘Three’s Company’ star gave her opinion on the ‘Ghost’ star’s death while speaking to Shinan Govani at the party for Tom Ford’s movie, ‘A Single Man’, at the Toronto Film Festival.

“They took a beautiful man” and “put poison in his body,” the New York Post quoted her as saying.

Somers, who has a book about cancer coming out next month, said: “Why couldn’t they have built him up nutritionally and gotten rid of the toxins? . . . I hate to be this controversial . . . but I have to speak out.”

Other stars present at the party included Julianne Moore, Naomi Watts, Clive Owen, and Colin Firth. (ANI)

Single gene behind essential tremor, Parkinson’s disease identified

Washington, September 2 (ANI): A single gene promotes development of essential tremor in some patients and Parkinson’s disease in others has been identified by an international team of researchers.

In a study report published in Parkinsonism and Related Disorders, Mayo Clinic researchers in Florida and their collaborators worldwide note that patients with essential tremor shake when they move, while those with Parkinson’s disease shake when they are at rest.

They further state that a variant in LINGO1, a gene involved in neuronal survival, is the first proven evidence of a common genetic component in the development of both disorders.

Analysing their findings, the researchers have come to the conclusion that mutations in this gene are potentially responsible for five percent of patients with Parkinson’s disease, and five percent of patients with essential tremor.

Lead researcher Dr. Carles Vilarino-Guell, of Mayo Clinic, said: “There is a mutation in the gene that must be causing or contributing to Parkinson’s disease in some people and essential tremor in others.”

He, however, added that that did not mean that people with essential tremor have an increased risk of developing Parkinson’s disease.

The findings are intriguing because “although essential tremor and Parkinson’s disease are considered to be different diseases, researchers have been arguing for a long time about whether essential tremor is a milder, preliminary form of Parkinson’s disease, and they have been looking for the genetic connection between these disorders,” he said.

“Now we know LINGO1 is the first gene identified,” he added.

The scientists have yet to identify any specific mutation or mutations on LINGO1 responsible for either disorder.

“The easiest explanation is that there are two separate and clearly distinct mutations in the gene contributing to the disorders. But because this gene doubles the risk of developing either disease and it is found at the same frequency in both diseases, it is possibly the same mutation,” Dr. Vilarino-Guell said.

“Both diseases are also affected by environmental factors, and that may influence which disorder a person would be more likely to develop,” he added. (ANI)

Flexible high-resolution home theatre displays come closer to reality

Washington, August 21 (ANI): You may soon get to enjoy facilities like flexible high-resolution home theatre displays, wearable health monitors, and biomedical imaging devices because scientists are working on a novel process for creating new classes of lighting and display systems.

John Rogers, the Flory-Founder Chair Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois, has revealed that the new process is all about creating and assembling ultrathin, ultrasmall inorganic light-emitting diodes (LEDs) into large arrays offers new classes of lighting and display systems with interesting properties, such as see-through construction and mechanical flexibility.

He said that such properties would be impossible to achieve with existing technologies.

“Our goal is to marry some of the advantages of inorganic LED technology with the scalability, ease of processing and resolution of organic LEDs,” said Rogers.

Compared to their organic counterparts, inorganic LEDs are brighter, more robust and longer-lived.

Organic LEDs, however, are attractive because they can be formed on flexible substrates, in dense, interconnected arrays.

Rogers and his colleagues-including collaborators from Northwestern University, the Institute of High Performance Computing in Singapore, and Tsinghua University in Beijing-say that the new technology combines features of both.

“By printing large arrays of ultrathin, ultrasmall inorganic LEDs and interconnecting them using thin-film processing, we can create general lighting and high-resolution display systems that otherwise could not be built with the conventional ways that inorganic LEDs are made, manipulated and assembled,” Rogers said.

To overcome requirements on device size and thickness associated with conventional wafer dicing, packaging and wire bonding methods, the researchers have developed epitaxial growth techniques for creating LEDs with sizes up to 100 times smaller than usual.

They have also developed printing processes for assembling these devices into arrays on stiff, flexible, and stretchable substrates.

To create an array, a rubber stamp contacts the wafer surface at selected points, lifts off the LEDs at those points, and transfers them to the desired substrate.

“The stamping process provides a much faster alternative to the standard robotic ‘pick and place’ process that manipulates inorganic LEDs one at a time. The new approach can lift large numbers of small, thin LEDs from the wafer in one step, and then print them onto a substrate in another step,” Rogers said.

The researcher says that shifting position and repeating the stamping process can transfer LEDs to other locations on the same substrate, and, in this fashion, large light panels and displays can be crafted from small LEDs made in dense arrays on a single, comparatively small wafer.

Given that the LEDs can be placed far apart and still provide sufficient light output, Rogers says that the panels and displays can be nearly transparent.

He even envisions the creation of flexible and even stretchable sheets of printed LEDs, which can have potential use in the health-care industry.

“Wrapping a stretchable sheet of tiny LEDs around the human body offers interesting opportunities in biomedicine and biotechnology, including applications in health monitoring, diagnostics and imaging,” Rogers said.

A research article describing the researchers’ work has been published in the journal Science. (ANI)

Coming soon: 15-minute, $100 human genome sequencing

Washington, July 28 (ANI): Human genome sequencing is expected to become as cheap as 100 dollars per case, and that too at speeds 20,000 times faster than second-generation sequencers currently on the market, with a new device being developed to watch DNA being copied in real time.

Stephen Turner, the Chief Technology Officer at Pacific Biosciences, has revealed Single Molecule Real-Time (SMRT) sequencing will be released commercially in 2010.

A decade ago, it took Celera Genomics and the Human Genome Project years to sequence complete human genomes.

In 2008, James Watson’s entire genetic code was read by a new generation of technology in months.

With SMRT sequencing, Pacific Biosciences experts expect to accomplish the same feat in minutes.

The method used in the Human Genome Project taps into the cell’s natural machinery for replicating DNA.

The enzyme DNA polymerase is used to copy strands of DNA, creating billions of fragments of varying length. Each fragment ends with a tiny fluorescent molecule that identifies only the last nucleotide in the chain, and by lining these fragments up according to length, their glowing tips can be read off like letters on a page.

Instead of inspecting DNA copies after polymerase has done its work, SMRT sequencing watches the enzyme in real time as it races along and copies an individual strand stuck to the bottom of a tiny well.

Every nucleotide used to make the copy is attached to its own fluorescent molecule that lights up when the nucleotide is incorporated, and this light is spotted by a detector that identifies the colour and the nucleotide – A, C, G, or T.

The researchers behind this technology hope that repeating this process simultaneously in many wells may help bring about a substantial boost in sequencing speed.

“When we reach a million separate molecules that we’re able to sequence at once … we’ll be able to sequence the entire human genome in less than 15 minutes,” said Turner.

The device also has the potential to reduce the number of errors made in DNA sequencing. Given that the errors made by SMRT sequencing are random, that is not systematically occurring at the same spot, they are more likely to disappear as the procedure is repeated.

A presentation on “Single Molecule Real-Time DNA Sequencers” was made at the 2009 Industrial Physics Forum, a component of the 51st Annual Meeting of American Association of Physicists in Medicine, on Monday. (ANI)

90pct Aussies feel stressed due to work

Melbourne, Jul 13 (ANI): A new survey has revealed that nearly nine out of ten Australians feel an “unhealthy” amount of stress, and most feel that it is largely contributed by work.

The Newspoll, commissioned by Lifeline Australia, revealed that finances, health, and personal relationships were also the other contributors to stress.

However, the levels of stress this year were found to be slightly down from those previous year, with 87 per cent of the 1200 people surveyed indicating that they were stressed compared to 91 per cent a year ago.

Four out of ten people said that they experienced “unhealthy” stress levels, and nearly three-quarters of those stressed thought that work was the major contributor.

Money stressed out two-thirds, and one in five were “highly stressed” about it.

Interest rate drops and the Federal Government’s cash handouts helped to lower financial worries.

Women were more likely to be stressed than men, the poll found, and so were the people who lived in big cities compared to their country counterparts, except when it came to relationships.

Single people were more likely to be stressed than couples, and the more people earned the more stressed they felt.

Lifeline Australia CEO Dawn O’Neil said that too many Australians were feeling the pinch.

“We know that small amounts of stress can sometimes help us but … we are no longer just feeling a little bit of stress,” News.com.au quoted her as saying. (ANI)

Peter Andre ‘uses Jordan look-alike in new video’

London, July 09 (ANI): Peter Andre seems to be in no mood to be soft with his estranged wife Katie Price a.k.a Jordan. He has reportedly used a look-alike of the glamour model in his new video.

The singer was seen shooting for video of the single Behind Closed Doors with three models that included the main model wearing tiny hotpants and a bra and lying on a car bonnet, similar to the scenes from Kate and Peter’s reality show.

However, Andre’s manager insisted that the video did not mock the British model.

“We deliberately went for someone without big boobs and chose someone with red hair so he wouldn’t be accused of this,” the Daily Star quoted the manager as saying.

Andre has also revealed that he is not currently ready to be involved in a relationship with someone new.

He wrote on social network sit Twitter: “No plans to do a kiss-and-tell book. That’s not what I’m about. Not interested in anyone. Once again, the kids and work is all I care about now.” (ANI)

Single gene mutation behind catastrophic epilepsy

Washington, July 8 (ANI): Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine have found a mutation in a single gene to be responsible for catastrophic epilepsy – characterized by severe muscle spasms, persistent seizures, mental retardation and sometimes autism.

Dr. Jeffrey Noebels, professor of neurology, neuroscience and molecular and human genetics at BCM and director of the Blue Bird Circle Developmental Neurogenetics Laboratory at BCM, said that the team replicated the defect in mice, developing a mouse model of the disease that could help researchers figure out effective treatments for and new approaches to curing the disease.

“While many genes underlying various forms of childhood epilepsy have been identified in the past decade, most cause a disorder of ‘pure’ seizures,” said Noebels.

Why some children have a more complicated set of disorders beginning with major motor spasms in infancy followed by cognitive dysfunction and developmental disorders such as autism remained a mystery until the discovery by the BCM team that a mutation in only a single gene explains all four features of catastrophic epilepsy.

A gene known as Aristaless-related homeobox or ARX has a specific mutation called a triplet repeat, which means that a particular genetic (in this case, GCG) is repeated many times in the gene.

When the researchers duplicated this particular mutation in specially bred mice, the animals had motor spasm similar to those seen in human infants.

Recordings of their brain waves showed that they had several kinds of seizes, included absence epilepsy and general convulsion. They also had learning disabilities and were four times more likely to avoid contact with other mice than their normal counterparts.

This behaviour is similar to that seen in children with autism or similar disorders in the same spectrum.

“The new model is an essential tool to find a cure for the disorder,” said Noebels.

The study appears in the current issue of the Journal of Neuroscience. (ANI)

Abba stars Andersson, Ulvaeus to enthral fans with first joint composition in 15yrs

Melbourne, June 24 (ANI): About 35 years after rocking the world with Eurovision smash Waterloo, sexagenarian Abba songwriters Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus are now all set to enthral their fans with their first joint composition in 15 years.

Story of a Heart, credited to The Benny Andersson Band, features Swedish singer Helen Sjoholm.

It is said to be the first international single for the band, which Andersson has fronted for 20 years.

The single is one of 13 tracks on the album, also called Story of a Heart.

The album features several older Orkester songs translated into English, as well as material only previously released in Sweden. Ulvaeus has written lyrics for it.

“I wanted to make music based on the Swedish folk tradition, but with new songs written by me,” the Herald Sun quoted Andersson as telling Abba’s official website.

Some industry experts believe that the pair’s album will move quickly up the charts.

“It’s very good. It’s very Abba but why not?” Melbourne music stalwart Molly Meldrum said.

“There’s a whole new audience who are so internet-savvy, people will discover it – it’ll get immediate international attention no mater what,” he added.

Story of a Heart will be released in Melbourne on July 6. (ANI)

Jason Bateman bashful about onscreen kiss with Jennifer Aniston

Washington, May 12 (ANI): Hollywood Actor Jason Bateman might have kissed a lot of actress onscreen, but as far as his onscreen kiss with Jennifer Aniston in ‘The Baster’ is concerned, he is pretty bashful.

Though Bateman did not emphasize much about the kiss he definitely lauded Jennifer’s kissing abilities.

“It felt … It was a good scene, I’ll say that. It was a good scene,” People magazine quoted him as saying.

Bateman revealed that he had been friends with Jennifer since he worked with her in the ‘Break-Up’.

He also said that working with Jennifer again was fun.

“It’s nice to finally work together. I think we just had one scene in The Break-Up. It’s been a lot of fun,” he said.

‘The Baster’ is about a single, 40-year-old woman who decides to have a child via a sperm donor, but her friend (played by Bateman) surreptitiously replaces her donor’s semen with his own. (ANI)

Single Lindsay spotted looking painfully skinny

New York, Apr 23 (ANI): Lindsay Lohan was spotted looking painfully skinny, just days after her traumatic split from DJ Samantha Ronson.

The ‘Mean Girls’ actress revealed her stick-thin arms and a protruding rib cage while she went shopping with her kid sis Ali in Los Angeles.

Lohan later tried covering up her skinny frame under a baggy shirt while she went for a party.

This is not the first time Lindsay has been spotted looking ultra-thin. Back in 2005 she had acquired the same tiny frame, when she acknowledged to Vanity Fir magazine that her weight had gone out of control.

“I knew I had a problem and I couldn’t admit it. My arms were disgusting. I had no arms,” The New York Daily News quoted Lindsay, as telling Vanity Fair in 2006.

Lohan recently told Us Weekly that she feels “so alone” after her early April split from Ronson, her girlfriend of a year.

“I’m a f–king 22-year-old girl who’s in love,” she said.

“I’m just really hurt. This whole situation is sick,” she added. (ANI)

Yankees’ Burnett pitches six hitless innings

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Reuters) – A.J. Burnett pitched six innings without giving up a hit before his offense broke open a close game in the New York Yankees’ 7-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday.

Burnett (2-0), who joined the Yankees as a free agent from Toronto, kept the American League champions scoreless until the seventh when the Rays had three consecutive singles to score their two runs. The right-hander struck out nine and walked one.

“He was pretty solid for eight innings,” Tampa Bay’s Evan Longoria, who was struck out twice by Burnett, told reporters. “It’s tough as a hitter to give in and tip your hat to a guy, but give credit where credit is due.”

New York’s Mark Teixeira broke the 2-2 deadlock with a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the eighth before the Yankees scored four runs in the ninth, with Derek Jeter hitting a two-out three-run homer.

Nick Swisher also homered for the Yankees, who lost to the Rays 15-5 on Monday.

Tampa Bay did not have a hit until Carl Crawford led off the seventh with the first of three consecutive singles. Carlos Pena, with the third single, made it a 2-1 game and Pat Burrell followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the score.

Burnett, who pitched a no-hitter in 2001, admitted he had been hoping for another.

“Everybody was thinking about it, even me,” Burnett said.

“I’m not going to lie and say I wasn’t. I was putting the ball where I wanted to. It definitely could have happened, but it wasn’t meant to be.”

Brett Gardner, whose ground-rule double provided the Yankees’ first run in the fourth, and Jeter both went 3-for-5.

J.P Howell (0-1), who pitched the eighth for Tampa Bay, was given the loss. Starter Matt Garza allowed five hits and two runs over seven innings. He struck out nine and walked two.

Amy Winehouse whiling away time with Gorillaz instead of working on album

London, Apr 13 (ANI): Troubled English singer Amy Winehouse is driving her record bosses ballistic, as she is busy fooling around with the Gorillaz rather than working on her third album.

Though the Universal record bosses spent a huge amount on making Amy return to the Caribbean in a bid to help her “focus her mind” on her forthcoming album, their efforts have gone in vain because she has not yet stepped into the studio.

Winehouse has not yet stepped into the studio with producer Salaam Remi, who was behind her hit album ‘Frank’.

Instead, the ‘Back to Black’ hitmaker has been busy trying out stuff with Damon Albarn and his band of Gorillaz.

According to sources, the Universal bosses are already infuriated with Winehouse, as she has not been able to make a single up market song.

“They were not happy to say the least. They want Amy to get cracking on her new album, but the results have so far not been up to scratch,” the Mirror quoted a source as telling 3am.

“Imagine how they felt when they realized she had agreed to work with Gorillaz? They couldn’t believe it. It’s an unnecessary distraction. They think she should invest all her energy in her own music. She should be knuckling down and delivering the goods,” the source added.

On the other hand, Winehouse, who has become a fan of Gorillaz style of music, is livid that her record bosses are not humming the same tune as her. (ANI)

Mischa Barton says being single has ‘empowered’ her

New Delhi, April 13 (ANI): Mischa Barton has admitted that she felt ‘empowered’ following her recent break-up.

The 23-year-old star, who recently parted ways with Kooks frontman Luke Prichard after a brief relationship, said that being single has made her confident and mature, reports the China Daily.

“I’m still working on it but I’ve grown so much in the past six months. I’ve grown immensely and it’s because I’ve been single. After I broke up with a boyfriend last year, I felt empowered,” she told Britain’s Cosmopolitan magazine

“I’ve forced myself to grow up – I really felt like it was time. And nothing makes you grow like finding out that somebody or something isn’t good for you,” she added.

The ‘O.C.’ actress said that she doesn’t regret the split because it taught her more about herself.

“I don’t believe in regrets. Things are supposed to shape you and change you. I’ve learnt a lot from my mistakes. We’ve all done things that were stupid, or that didn’t work out as planned, and it’s human nature to grow from that,” she said. (ANI)
