Saving the historical monuments to preserve cultural heritage of Punjab

Amritsar, Sep.10 (ANI): An endeavour is underway to preserve various heritage buildings of Punjab State in a bid to treasure the cultural heritage including historical monuments, which can help in boosting tourism in Punjab.

The palaces and Havelis across Punjab bespeak glorious heritage. These historically important buildings include religious places belonging to different faiths and can attract tourists to Punjab.

The Sheesh Mahal and Qila Mubarak at Patiala, Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s summer palace at Amritsar or ancestral home of Shaheed Bhagat Singh at Khatkar Kalan – they are important sites that need to be preserved for the coming generations.

“Every community, society has a very precious heritage which has to be and can be transferred to the next generation and this is the responsibility of any civil society to transfer that heritage to the coming generation if you don’t perform that duty, that is a sin, that’s crime,” said Dr. Sukhdev Singh, Punjab State convener, Indian National Trust For Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).

To spread awareness about preservation of these heritage sites, the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage recently organized a workshop on the theme ‘Cultural Heritage and Media’ in Amritsar.

The event highlighted the fact that popularizing existing heritage buildings and protecting sites of cultural importance, presently in ruins due to negligence and development activities, ought to be the main priority.

There were proposals to convert heritage sites into museums and heritage hotels for tourists to get a glimpse of Punjab’s rich cultural heritage.

It was suggested that the restored monuments could be commercially used on public-private partnership basis.

“Nuclear families have become more common than joint families and it has resulted in a big change in the whole system. Like in our system, the kids are taught to respect elders and follow the path of honesty. People get equal share in all institutions like in home, office and agriculture but today they are aware of especially one aspect of their lives,” said Paramjeet Singh , Prof. Of Architechture, Gurunanak University, Amritsar.

“There is a significant relation between tourism and the heritage sites because some tourists surely have some interest in what’s the history of people and what’s the culture of people. They don’t come here just to see the huge marble buildings. They don’t want to see the modern architecture, which infact is mostly western, they come here to know about the past of this place, so it surely encourages tourism,” said Dr. Sukhdev Singh.

Amritsar is the heritage city of Punjab. The city is known globally for the revered Golden Temple, one of the pilgrimage centers, which stands intact and was built nearly 400 years ago.

The heritage tour in Amritsar remains incomplete without visiting the old city, known for its traditional market and centuries old residential houses.

Be it the historic Jallianwala Bagh or the Summer Palace, the royal residence of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, they take every visitor here to the era they stand testimony of. By Ravinder Singh Robin (ANI)

Malay Tamil, Chinese educationists keen to teach science, math in mother tongue

Petaling Jaya (Malaysia), July 9 (ANI): Both Tamil and Chinese educationists have welcomed the Cabinet’s decision to revert the teaching of science and mathematics to one’s mother tongue in vernacular schools.

Dong Zong (United Chinese School Committees Association of Malaysia) president Dr Yap Sin Tian said the use of English had brought about negative effects on students.

Dr Yap said Dong Zong welcomed the decision to increase the number of hours for the teaching of English but it also hoped that more time would be allocated for Chinese classes.

Jiao Zong (the United Chinese School Teachers Association of Malaysia) chairman Ong Chiow Chuen said Chinese schools were ready to use Chinese for both subjects as early as next year as it had been going bilingual in its teaching thus far.

Malaysian Indian Congress education bureau chairman, Dr. T. Marimuthu, said the decision was good as it reflected the sentiments at roundtable discussions.

“The majority of Tamil school headmasters supported the teaching of mathematics and science in English in 2002 because many scientific terms and reports are in English.

The Star quoted National Tamil Headmasters’ Association general-secretary Muthiah Sithambaram, as saying that the decision would not bring things to a standstill. (ANI)

Secretary accidentally bites off boss’ penis during oral sex in car

Kuala Lumpur, May 5 (ANI): A secretary reportedly bit off her boss’ penis accidentally while performing oral sex in a car.

According to Sin Chew Daily and China Press, the 30-year-old woman was performing the sex act when the car, she and her boss were in, was hit by a reversing van.

The impact of the reversing van caused the woman to bite off her lover’s organ.

The incident took place in a Singapore park, and to make matters worse, the woman’s husband had sent a private investigator to spy on her after suspecting that she was being unfaithful.

The investigator said that he had followed the woman and her boss to the park.

“On reaching the park, they did not alight from the car. Not long after, the car started to shake violently,” the Star Online quoted the investigator as saying.

“After the car was hit by the van, there was a loud scream from the woman whose mouth was covered with blood,” he said.

The woman later followed her lover to the hospital.

The investigator, who called an ambulance to send the man to hospital, said that it was the first time that he had encountered such an incident. (ANI)

Porn star eyes Louisiana Senator seat with ‘Listening Tour’

Washington, May 2 (ANI): Porn star Stormy Daniels is set to launch her “Listening Tour” across the state of Louisiana in the US for a probable chance of running against Senator David Vitter.

The 29-year-old would “meet with Louisiana men and women and listen to the issues and concerns they struggle with everyday”.

Daniels is yet to have a party affiliation but that has not dampened her spirits.

“I wanted to take over the world and I guess ‘senator’ is a good place to start, right? I’ve been handed a golden opportunity and I should take advantage of it,” Politico quoted her as saying.

Meanwhile, she is allegedly crossing her fingers that her porn star past would not block her possible political career, especially considering Vitter has had a sexual past of his own.

Vitter’s phone number had been found in the published phone log of the “D.C. Madam”, Deborah Jeane Palfrey in July 2007.

Though he never confessed any specific wrongdoing, he admitted, in a statement: “a very serious sin in my past for which I am, of course, completely responsible.” (ANI)

Etiquette course launched for misbehaving Thai monks

Bangkok – Disturbed by reports that Thai monks have taken to wearing make-up, carrying pinks purses and other forms of public “homosexual expression,” a leading preacher plans to launch a “good manners” course for novices, news reports said Monday.

Senior monk Maha Wudhijaya Vajiramedhi is to introduce Thailand’s first etiquette course at the Novice Demonstration School in Chiang Rai province, 600 kilometres north of Bangkok, next month, The Nation newspaper reported.

“If it succeeds in improving their manners, I’ll expand the curriculum to other novice schools nationwide,” Wudhijaya said.

The well-known Buddhist preacher and writer felt the need for the “good manners” course to counter the negative public image of the monkhood created by unconventional behaviour by some monks and allegations of sexual relations among monks, a sin that is punishable by defrocking.

More than 90 per cent of the Thai population profess to be followers of Buddhism.

“When the Lord Buddha was a prince, he was educated by his royal household. As a result, he had really good manners and was admired,” Wudhijaya said. (dpa)

Bangladesh urged to stop deaths of mutiny suspects

Dhaka – Human Rights Watch asked Bangladesh Saturday to stop the deaths in custody of suspected mutineers, as reports that 16 soldiers died in detention since a bloody uprising at the Dhaka headquarters of Bangladesh’s border guards. “The Bangladesh government should protect detainees suspected of involvement in a February massacre of army officers from being killed or mistreated,” the New-York-based rights watchdog said in a statement.

The government should ensure that those responsible for the massacre are held accountable and quickly charged or freed, have access to lawyers, and, if charged, receive a fair trial in a civilian court, the statement added.

The 33-hour troop mutiny at the headquarters of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), which ended on February 26, killed more than 70 officers and heightened tension between the armed forces and the newly elected government of Sheikh Hasina Wazed.

Authorities detained more than 1,100 soldiers for the mutiny as the government launched three separate investigations by the army, the police criminal investigation department and an independent administrative unit.

The detainees were being interrogated by the army-led joint forces.

Following reports of the deaths of 16 paramilitary soldiers, the BDR said in a statement Thursday that four of the detainees committed suicide, six died of heart attacks while the rest died of other diseases.

It also said that commanding officers had been instructed to make their soldiers aware of “the negative aspects of suicide” as killing oneself is a regarded a sin and attempt to commit suicide is punishable office.

“Given the history of abuses by security forces in Bangladesh, there is no reason to take at face value the claim that these detainees have committed suicide,” said Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch.

“The government needs to act immediately to make sure that there are no more deaths in custody,” the said adding that the watchdog received reports of torture of the detainees, allegations the Bangladeshi authorities denied.

“The explanations given by representatives of the security forces are simply not credible,” Adams said. “Torture is a regular ‘investigation technique’ in Bangladesh and killing of detainees in government custody is an endemic problem.”

The watchdog suggested the government set up a commission comprising lawyers, human rights workers, and other civil society representatives to visit and monitor detention centres, ensure that detainees are properly treated, and document abuse allegations.

Human Rights Watch also called on the government to ensure that the accused are tried in civil, rather than military, courts.

Adams was doubtful about a fair trial by military court in an environment where the army was seeking retribution. “To try border guards before a military tribunal would be in violation of both domestic and international laws,” he said.(dpa)

Muslim organization issues fatwa over mobile-phone etiquettes

According to reports, a panel of clerics of the Kanpur-based Muslim organization, Jamia Ashraf-ul-Madaris, has issued a ‘fatwa’ over etiquettes related to use of mobile phones.

As per the ‘fatwa’ – which is essentially an Islamic legal diktat laid down by staunch practitioners of the Sharia law -, it is a sin to use verses from the Koran as ring tones. In addition, the ruling from the organization said that answering calls in the middle of the aayat – a verse from the holy Koran – is also sinful. The decree argues that people answer calls midway through the aayat, leave the verse incomplete.

Elaborating on the decision, Ghyasuddin, a senior cleric of the organization, said: “Listening to aayats partially is anti-Islamic. This kind of action amounts to a gunah (sin).”

The panel has also restricted the followers of Islam from putting their cell-phones in the ‘vibrate’ mode while offering prayer services, and censuring their use in the bathroom. Briefing the Press Association, Ghyasuddin said: “If the phone rings and an aayat can be heard in the toilet, it is a sin.”

Ghyasuddin added that these kind of anti-Islamic practices leave a bad impression on the young generation.

Dog sacrifices in medieval Hungarian town may shed light on mysterious pagan customs

Washington, April 7 (ANI): A new study has suggested that a medieval Hungarian town full of ritually sacrificed dogs that was recently discovered could shed light on mysterious pagan customs not found in written records from the era.

According to a report in National Geographic News, roughly 1,300 bones from about 25 dogs were recently discovered in the 10th- to 13th-century town of Kana, which had been accidentally unearthed in 2003 during the construction of residential buildings on the outskirts of Budapest.

Researchers found ten dogs buried in pits and four puppy skeletons in pots buried upside down.

These sacrifices probably served much like amulets to ward against evil-for instance, to protect against witchcraft or the evil eye, according to study leader Marta Daroczi-Szabo, an archaeozoologist at Eotvos Lorand University in Budapest.

About a dozen other canines were found buried under house foundations.

These animals likely served as “construction sacrifices,” Daroczi-Szaba said.

During the Middle Ages, it was customary in Hungary to lock sacrificial animals inside new houses or to slaughter the beasts as people moved in.

Sometimes dogs were beaten to death on the doorsteps or a chicken’s throat was slit.

Dogs were popular sacrificial animals in medieval Hungary. They were seen in two different ways: They symbolized loyalty, but they also stood for the deadly sin of envy.

The new findings show that “sacrifices were not a rare phenomenon, as one may have thought from isolated finds,” said Daroczi-Szaba. “It was practiced regularly in a Christian village,” she added.

According to University of Edinburgh archaeozoologist Laszlo Bartosiewicz, the fact that pagan customs such as animal sacrifice persisted for centuries side-by-side with the church is surprising.

“One wouldn’t expect these practices in Christian times. It’s exciting to see what was sacred and profane back then,” said Bartosiewicz.

“The great number of sacrifices we see (in Kana) will significantly improve our chances of interpreting what their meaning was,” he added. (ANI)

Gays killed in Baghdad as clerics urge clampdown

Two gay men were killed in Baghdad’s Sadr City slum, a local official said on Saturday, and police said they had found the bodies of four more after clerics urged a crackdown on a perceived spread of homosexuality.

Homosexuality is prohibited almost everywhere in the Middle East, but conditions have become especially dangerous for gays and lesbians in Iraq since the rise of religious militias after U.S.-led forces toppled Saddam Hussein six years ago.

“Two young men were killed on Thursday. They were sexual deviants. Their tribes killed them to restore their family honour,” a Sadr City official who declined to be named said.

The police source who declined to be named said the bodies of four gay men were unearthed in Sadr City on March 25, each bearing a sign reading “pervert” in Arabic on their chests.

Sermons condemning homosexuality were read at the last two Friday prayer gatherings in Sadr City, a sprawling Baghdad slum of some 2 million people. The slum is a bastion of support for fiery Shi’ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr and his Mehdi Army militia.

The Mehdi Army has frozen its activities over the last year and government forces have wrested control of the slum.

Many young men who might have cut their hair short and grown beards when religious gangs controlled much of Iraq now dress in a more Western style as government forces take back control.

Some are now accused of being gay, and residents of Sadr City say at least one coffee shop has become a gay hangout.

A member of the slum’s Sadrist office said the Mehdi Army was not involved in the killings, but said homosexuality was now more widespread since the Mehdi Army lost control of the slum.

“This (homosexuality) has spread because of the absence of the Mehdi Army, the spread of sexual films and satellite television and a lack of government surveillance,” said the office’s Sheikh Ibrahim al-Gharawi, a Shi’ite cleric.

Homosexual acts are punishable by up to seven years in prison in Iraq. A gay Iraqi man said any alleged crimes should be left to the law to deal with.

“If they’ve committed a crime, then there is the law. Killing is a big sin,” he said, giving his name as Laith.

Teenage girl’s flogging did not occur in Swat: Taliban

Islamabad, Apr.4 (ANI): The Taliban has denied that the flogging of a 17-year-girl took place in the Swat Valley.

“The act is in accordance with shariah, but the flogging did not happen in Swat,” The News quoted Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesperson Muslim Khan, as saying.

Khan said the punishment was according to what is described in the shariah.

“No one would be allowed to interfere in shariah, and if any man or woman commits sin, we will punish them according to sharia. Peace is directly related with the imposition of Islamic laws,” Khan added.

Khan said the video circulated in the media was a fake, and the incident shown in it was another one.

He also warned of taking stern action against the person who captured the video on his mobile.

Pakistani religious scholars have rubbished Taliban claims by saying that the sharia cannot be implemented by any group of individuals and only an authorized court can find a woman guilty on an illicit relation charge. (ANI)

Yoga can help beat economic recession, claims Ramdev

Mumbai, Mar 18 (ANI): Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev has urged stock traders in Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) to work for self and country to help beat current economic recession.

Ramdev, who held a special yoga camp for the employees of BSE, said that these are not the times to sit back, but to stand on one’s feet and work towards a better living.

He added that yoga teaches people the values of a good work culture and that will help people have a prosperous life.

“Yoga will teach you that work is religion, work is worship and sitting idle is a sin. When we work towards attaining goals of our life, we would be able to sail through all economic crises. When we understand that working and doing business is a religion in itself and working for the betterment of our country is also our responsibility, all of us would be happy,” said Ramdev.

Ramdev also urged the citizens to weed out the corrupt politicians and vote them out in the forthcoming general elections.

“Corrupt politicians ruling over millions of honest people is an insult in itself. I urge political parties to be careful in selecting their candidates, but in case, they are not able to do that, then the citizens of this country will unveil these dishonest, corrupt, characterless and illiterate as well as uneducated people. I ask you all to ensure 100 per cent voting and elect good leaders,” he said.

Ramdev has been campaigning for the ‘miracles of yoga’ and against many evils in the society. (ANI)

Talking to Zardari will be a ‘sin’: Sharif

Lahore, Feb.28 (ANI): Taking his fight with President Asif Ali Zardari a step further, former Pakistan Prime Minister and Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) chief, Nawaz Sharif has said that he is still ready to mend ways with the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), but unwilling to commit the “sin” of talking to Zardari.

“I am still ready to talk to Benazir’s PPP. But I consider talking to Zardari the ‘biggest sin,” The Nation quoted Sharif, as saying.

Addressing a Parliamentary Party meeting at his Raiwind residence, Sharif charged Zardari of behaving like a ‘dictator’ by imposing Governor’s rule in Punjab province.

“President Zardari has imposed a ‘democratic dictatorship’ in the country,” he said.

Sharif said he would not hold talks with Zardari regarding his disqualification, and dethroning of his brother,Shahbaz Sharif, from the Punjab Chief Minister’s chair.

“PML-N considers Prime Minister Gilani as reliable person to resume reconciliatory talks,” he said.

He also charged Zardari with forcing the country towards a civil disobedience movement.

Later, Sharif met the special German representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan, Michel Coach and discussed the current political scenario in the country.

Sharif, reportedly, told Coach that the present turmoil was created by President Zardari, and would have a negative impact on the ‘War on Terror’ in the region. (ANI)
