Trauma of Manipur violence victims

Imphal, May 5 (ANI): Manipur has been affected by militant violence for a long time and the worst sufferers are the common people.

Here is a family that was a victim of militant violence and see how they are coping with the loss of their loved one.

The simple and happy life of the family of late Singam Premananda Singh, came to an end after his death.

Premananda, the sole bread earner of the family was killed in an explosion engineered by a militant outfit at Pourabi Road in Manipur on 16th December 2007 along with six other people.

Almost four years later, the dreadful incident still haunts his family.

Premananda has left behind an aged mother, his wife and three children who live in the shadow of poverty.

Ibemma, his wife, now weaves clothes and does other menial labour to keep the family afloat.

“We are facing untold hardships after his death. I’m old and unable to work. Now, all the responsibility of the family has fallen on my daughter-in-law’s shoulder. No one is there to look after us,” said Thamchet Devi, mother of a victim.

The Sstate Government gave Rs one lakh to assist the Singam family and promised to provide assistance in future as well.

Still, Ibemma finds it difficult to make both ends meet and provide a future to her children.

Sometimes, she finds it difficult juggling different roles, but she sees hope in her children’s eyes and is inspired to soldier on.

“It is very difficult to manage and run the family all alone. I have to raise my children, take part in locality’s social services and earn money as well. Even leading a simple life is hard for us,” said Ibemma Devi, wife of a victim.

Manipur has more than 30 militant groups and extortion, abductions and bomb attacks happen quite regularly in the state.

“They (militants) must think about the consequences of their actions, which normally affect innocent people. People are suffering unnecessarily due to their mindless acts. We are against them,” Devi added.

The story doesn’t end with the Singam family; there are several other families that have suffered a similar fate.

Here are many families like that of Premananda who have been victims of militants’ activities in the state.

People in the state live in fear that the same fate could befall them at any time. (ANI)

Gandhians in Ahmedabad laud government’s austerity drive

Ahmedabad, Sep 18(ANI): In contrast to leaders of some political parties, who are criticising the austerity measures mooted by the government as mere ‘tokenism’, Gandhians associated with the Sabarmati Ashram at Ahmedabad have lauded the initiative.

The Gandhains, who themselves live a life of extreme simplicity, following the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, said that if politicians lead a simple life, people would certainly follow in tune with the adage: Follow the leader.

Amrut Modi, the managing trustee Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram, a staunch Gandhian himself, is a firm believer in Gandhi’s teaching of ‘doing one’s work by oneself’, and professes it religiously.

Appreciating the austerity drive of the government, he said that politicians through such measures inspire people towards leading a simple life, as the Mahatma did.

“If simplicity is acquired, it can lead to change. Gandhiji himself had brought about change in the country. He prepared the people for independence and self-rule. The principle of simplicity is included in his teachings. He inspired the common man, through his simple life. Even today if our politicians adopt simplicity, then people will take inspiration from them,” Modi said.

Several other believers of Gandhi’s teaching also said that simplicity could help the nation develop, and also set an example in front of the whole world.

“The ministers should adopt Gandhiji’s principles and teachings pertaining to simplicity. This will help in the development of the country financially and otherwise and they can also send the message to the world, that how beneficial it can be to walk on Gandhiji’s principles,” said Dhimant Badiya, another Gandhian. Paris allowed to sue Hallmark over unauthorised image use

Washington, September 1 (ANI): A California court has allowed Paris Hilton to pursue a lawsuit against ‘Hallmark’ over claims that the greeting cards manufacturer used her image without her consent.

The socialite is alleging that the company used her snap and her catchphrase, ‘That’s Hot!’ on a card that read ‘Paris’s First Day as a Waitress.’

Paris claims the card reflects a scene from her hit reality TV show ‘The Simple Life’ and is taking the firm to the court, reports Contactmusic.

Judges at the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals gave the hotel heiress the opportunity to go ahead with the case, turning down Hallmark executives’ claims that the cartoon on the card was of a generic woman and not Hilton.

Judge Diarmuid O’Scannlain said: “The basic setting is the same: we see Paris Hilton, born to privilege, working as a waitress. (Hilton) has at least some probability of prevailing on the merits before a trier of fact.” (ANI)

Nicole Richie’s rehab stint brought her parents together

London, May 30 (ANI): American actress Nicole Richie is delighted that her rehab stint brought her warring parents back together.

Nicole adopted parents, singer Lionel Richie and mum Brenda, separated in 1988 when she was age five, ahead of the bitter divorce in 1993.

Lionel and wife were barely on speaking terms amid allegations of the singer’s infidelity.

In an interview to Larry King, the Simple Life star admits that relations between her parents begin to heal after she was admitted to rehab in Arizona in 2003 to battle substance abuse problems.

She is convinced that worrying about their daughter revived the bond between the former couple – who are now great friends.

“I think I was 20 when they started talking. And they actually didn’t start talking until I went to rehab. Now they’re best friends. And it’s really great,” the Daily Express quoted Nicole as saying. (ANI)

Diarrhoea kills two million children a year, disease on the rise

Diarrhoea kills two million children a year, disease on the rise Geneva – Diarrheal diseases, responsible for about 20 per cent of child deaths worldwide, are on the rise, the International Federation of Red Cross Societies warned Tuesday.

The organization’s statistics showed that in the last two years, national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies have requested 35 per cent more emergency aid to help treat occurrences of acute diarrheal illnesses than in 2006. These illnesses were related to outbreaks of diseases such as cholera.

An expert with the IFRC said in a statement that medical workers maybe “losing the battle.”

“This is especially true in countries affected by extreme poverty and conflict, where diarrheal diseases have become endemic,” said Uli Jaspers, who heads the organization’s water and sanitation team.

A key method of lowering deaths related to diarrhea is simply access to clean drinking water, aid organizations said.

According to the World Health Organization, nearly two million children die from diarrhoea each year. The cost of saving lives would be about 0.30 dollars for treating a child with salts and zinc tablets.

“The great challenge we now face is how to reach all children who are still suffering and dying from diarrhoea,” the WHO said recently.

Research was being conducted to determine how to reach those who do not yet have access to the cheap and simple life-saving formula, but the UN’s health group warned a lack of funding could impede the study’s progress. (dpa)

Mahatma Gandhi’s great grandson denounces auction of his belongings

London, Feb 16 (ANI): Mahatma Gandhi’s great grandson, Tushar Gandhi, has denounced a planned auction of his belongings as immoral, and joined Indian parliamentarians in demanding their return.

Gandhi’s sandals, pocket watch and spectacles will be sold to the highest bidder at a New York auction house next month, The Telegraph reported.

Tushar Gandhi, who runs the Mahatma Gandhi Foundation in Mumbai, said he has already had offers from people around the world to donate a month’s salary for the cause.

He has questioned the manner in which Peter Ruhe, a German memorabilia collector and chairman of the GandhiServe Foundation in Berlin, had obtained the items.

The watch, he claimed, was a gift from Gandhi to his grand niece-in-law who served as his personal assistant and in whose arms he died after being shot in 1948.

Tushar Gandhi said that Ruhe persuaded her to sign an agreement with him and now that she has died he is selling them off. He has gone around the world collecting Gandhi’s personal possessions and running it like a business.

“It is all very sad. It is immoral and must be stopped. It would be a grave insult to the nation if these items were just sold off. While my great-grandfather attached little importance to his possessions and lived a simple life, they are hugely sentimental items for the people,” he added.

“They are priceless to India. I would absolutely hate it if they ended up enriching the life of some wealthy businessman in America or Britain. They belong here,” Tushar Gandhi said. (ANI)

Paris Hilton furious over being made the object of Lady GaGa’s album

London, Jan 19 (ANI): Socialite Paris Hilton has flown into a rage after Internet gossips claimed that her old schoolmate singer Lady GaGa’s album poked fun at her.

Lady GaGa, who had attended New York’s Convent of the Sacred Heart school with the hotel heiress and her sister Nicky, recently claimed that her album ‘The Fame’ was all about “how anyone can feel famous”.

However, online bloggers claimed that the album definitely talks about Hilton, 27.

“Lady GaGa is clearly talking about the do-nothing heir-head she went to school with,” the Daily Star quoted one blogger as having written.

“There’s no doubt she’s poking fun at Paris,” another wrote.

A pal of ‘The Simple Life’ star has revealed that she is furious to have been made the object of the album.

“She’s livid that she’s been singled out on the Internet as an object of derision over Lady GaGa’s CD,” the pal said.

“They barely knew each other at school, other than perhaps nodding as they passed in the corridor.

“Paris is also envious of the way GaGa has made it big in the UK. GaGa is the name on everyone’s lips. It is really annoying for her,” the pal added.

A source close to Lady GaGa, 22, whose real name is Joanne Stefani Germanotta, said that the singer had got talent.

“If Paris wants some kind of an apology, she’s barking mad. GaGa has real talents,” the source stated. (ANI)
