Senator calls Nikki, Obama ‘ragheads’

Nikki Haley, the Indian American woman running for South Carolina’s Governor seat, was attacked with racial slur by a state lawmaker who called her a “raghead”.

Republican state Senator Jake Knotts also attacked US President Barack Obama in comments on an Internet political show called Pub Politics.

Haley, who was born a Sikh and describes herself as a Methodist, became target of racial slur typically used against ethnic groups that wear turbans or headdresses.

“We already got one raghead in the White House,” Knotts said. “We don’t need another in the Governor’s Mansion,” he was quoted as saying by The State newspaper. Knotts reportedly also talked at length about Haley’s parents, religion and family.

Haley campaign manager Tim Pearson said Knotts was an embarrassment to the state, and that South Carolina voters would make it clear on Tuesday they are better than this.

Knotts now insists that his comments were made in zest and also agreed to apologise.

“My ‘raghead’ comments about Obama and Haley were intended in jest,” he said. “Bear in mind that this is a freewheeling, anything-goes Internet radio show that is broadcast from a pub. It’s like local political version of Saturday Night Live,” he said in a statement.

Since my intended humorous context was lost in translation, I apologise. I still believe Haley is pretending to be someone she is not, much as Obama did, but I apologise to both for an unintended slur,” the Republican politician added.

Indian-American Haley is racially attacked

New York, June 6 (IANS) Indian-American Nikki Haley, who is contesting governorship in South Carolina, was attacked racially by a state lawmaker who called her a ‘raghead’, media reports said Sunday.

Republican state Senator Jake Knotts also made critical statement about President Barack Obama on an internet political show called Pub Politics.

Haley, who was born a Sikh, said she was ‘attacked’ because she’s leading in the polls, nbcagusta.com reported.

A ‘raghead’ is usually used against Arabs or other ethnic groups who wear turbans.

‘We already got one raghead in the White House and don’t need another in the governor’s mansion,’ a South Carolina newspaper quoted Knotts as saying.

He also commented about Haley’s parents’ religion and her family.

Haley spent Saturday afternoon campaigning at the City Hall in Aiken, just two days before the primary.

‘This is no longer about picking someone because they look good in a picture or because they hold a baby well,’ Haley said.

Haley told the crowd she wants to make South Carolina an independent state.

‘I went from ‘Nikki-who?’ to suddenly going double digits in the polls, and all of a sudden there were all these attacks. But when you go after corruption, power and money, you’re going to get attacked,’ Haley said.

Aiken Republican Club President Tony Coffero Jr. says Tuesday’s vote will be a close one.

Murdered Indian-origin liquor store owner”s family makes peace with Auckland Police

Auckland (New Zealand), May 15 (ANI): Family and friends of murdered Indian-origin liquor store owner Navtej Singh have decided to make peace with Auckland”s law enforcement authorities over what they initially labelled a flawed investigation report.

On Saturday, they said that the report”s conclusions would not bring Navtej back, and hoped it would prevent the police from making similar mistakes in the future.

Aucland Police had earlier dismissed the idea that they had failed in their “duty to protect”.

The New Zealand Herald quoted family spokesman Daljit Singh, as saying: “It was not a single mistake by any one department, but a procedural failure. The district commander came to us this morning and apologised to the family. Navtej will not come back with this report. However, it will not happen with anybody else in future.”

The New Zealand Sikh Society had described the delay in getting to Navtej Singh as “a complete disaster”.

However, Deputy Commissioner Rob Pope rejected the authority”s suggestion that the police failed in their duty of care.

“A regrettable series of events came together to create a delay and ideally we should have got to him sooner. We have apologised to the family for this. However, we should not lose sight of the fact that it was Anitelia Chan Kee who pulled the trigger and is now serving a 17-year prison term for Mr Singh”s murder,” the paper quoted Pope, as saying.

Pope further said the police had already made changes after investigating their handling of the case.

“We looked at all aspects of our response and identified several improvements, particularly in regard to the way we take command ofserious incidents and control the response of our staff in the field,” he said, adding that extra staff were now working in Counties Manukau as a result of a Government initiative were helping ease some of the pressures.

Staff were working with store owners in the area to reduce the risk of their becoming targets of crime.

Police are now required to make a formal response to the authority”s recommendations. (ANI)

Burkha-clad Saudi housewife poised to win Middle East ””Pop Idol””

London, March 31(ANI): A burkha clad Saudi housewife has strong chances of winning reality show ””Million””s Poet””, which is equivalent to ””Pop Idol”” in Middle East.

Hissa Hilal has impressed many with her radical poetries criticizing attitudes to women in her country.

Hilal, who is a former journalist and poetry editor for a Saudi newspaper, delivers her verses from beneath a niqab – the all-black face-veil worn by ultra-traditional Arab women.

Her works make a direct attack on the tradition of fatwas, led by clerics, in Saudi Arabia.

She said in one poem: “I have seen evil in the eyes of fatwas: now the lawful and unlawful are confused. When I unveil the truth, a monster appears from his hiding place; barbaric in thinking and action, angry and blind; wearing death as a dress and covering it with a belt.”

She has been given death threats by some extremists for speaking out but she isn””t scared.

However, she claims she wears the face-veil for the sake of her husband and family.

“This is a platform that can help you to reach the world. There are some people who constantly look for a target,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

She added: “When I went to some open (Muslim) countries, I noticed that western people looked at me suspiciously because I was wearing the niqab, but they would not do the same when they see a Sikh wearing the turban.

“Who is responsible for this suspicious look? Who made it happen? It was this kind of people – extremists – who have given us a bad name. Muslims, instead of being respected, are a source of fear and suspicion because of these people.”

Hilal””s success is apparently a sign of how conditions have improved for women after King Abdullah came to the throne in 2005.

During his reign, Saudi Arabia has seen a woman minister being nominated and permission for mixed-sex teaching at a newly opened science university.

””Million””s Poet””, that holds competition between writers of Bedouin verse, began in Abu Dhabi four years ago.

It is modeled on ITV television show Pop Idol. The winner takes home almost a million pounds. (ANI)

Rakeysh Mehra to make biopic on Milkha Singh

London, Mar. 20 (ANI): Bollywood director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra has revealed plans to make a biographical film on the life of Indian ace athlete Milkha Singh.

“There is so much darkness in today”s society. The youngsters today are looking for too much and, here in our backyard, we have something. There are some examples, which were burning once, but for me, burning even brighter today,” Mehra said.

“His story has more relevance in today”s time then it had when he was winning all medals and breaking all world records,” he added.

Nicknamed the Flying Sikh, Milkha Singh is the only Indian athlete till date who has broken an Olympic record.

Milkha Singh won Gold medals in both 200m and 400m events at the Tokyo Asian Games in 1958. At the Cardiff Commonwealth Games held the same year, he improved his 400m timing to 46.16 seconds, and grabbed a Gold medal again.

Titled ”Bhaag Milkha Bhaag” (Run Milkha, Run) the film would portray 75 years of Singh”s life right from his childhood in Pakistan and the Partition, apart from his achievements in sports.

Singh had lost his parents during the partition of the Indian subcontinent.

Ad filmmaker and lyricist Prasoon Joshi would team up with Mehra in ”Bhaag Milkha Bhaag”, which is the first biographical film to be made on a sports icon.

“It is not a eulogy, it is not an attempt to make a documentary on him; this is an attempt to really see what goes behind the making of a great person,” said Joshi.

The duo had worked earlier in Bollywood film ”Dilli 6” and the National Award-winning movie ”Rang De Basanti”.

Mikha Singh said the film would inspire youngsters to become great players.

“I would be happy when India will produces more Milkha Singhs from its soil…I want that parents should watch the movie and inspire their kids to become more great players and make their country proud,” said Singh. (ANI)

405th installation anniversary of Sri Guru Granth Sahib

Agra, Sep 19(ANI): People of all religions and communities gathered to celebrate the 405th anniversary of the installation of the Sikh holy scriptures, Sri Guru Granth Sahib, at Gurudwara Maithan in Agra.

This was a significant landmark for the Sikhs, as the 275-year-old handwritten scripture, whose front pages are written with gold, was put on display for the devotees.

“The Guru Granth Sahib has the preaching or ‘bani’ of famous poets like Kabir ji, Guru Ravidas ji and Baba Farid ji. It is symbol of humanity and so people of all the religions have gathered here to celebrate the ‘Prakash Parv’, the installation ceremony together,” said Kanwldeep Singh, President of Sri Gursikh Sabha.

Also on display was a miniature scripture of Guru Granth Sahib, which has been preserved at the Gurudwara Maithan for the past 15 years.

“We have Guru Granth sahib of 1 X 1 inches long. The British for the convenience of Sikh soldiers especially designed the holy book during the First World War, as they could not carry a normal sized book in the battlefield. The miniature Guru Granth Sahib was printed in Germany. It was kept in a silver box,” said Gyani Kashmir Singh, head Granthi of Gurudwara Maithan.

To mark the anniversary of the installation of Guru Granth Sahib, special prayers were also held in the Gurudwara premises, which once the house of Mai jassi that was visited by Guru Sri Tegh Bahadur.he gurudwara is currently undergoing renovation and will be expanded to facilitate the large number of devotees visiting the shrine.

A total of 20 million dollars will be spent on renovation and construction of new Gurudwara, a 100-bed hospital and a community hall.

Gurudwara Maithan also upheld the tradition of Langar, which has been followed over the centuries. Guru Arjan Dev and Mata Ganga set the precedent of preparing and serving food to the hungry, in the langar hall, where all social, economic and religious barriers collapse and all – the laborer, the lord, the peasant and the prince, are treated alike and served the same food in the same manner.

This is a practice of great social significance, and it is the key to the understanding of Sikhism. By Brijesh Sharma (ANI)

Sikh Bobby felt like a TV character when told to wear a ‘ crash turban helmet’

London, Sep.17 (ANI): A Sikh policeman has revealed how he felt like a character from TV’s Only Fools And Horses when his bosses asked him to wear a “crash turban” helmet.

Police Constable Gurmeal Singh, 31, was asked to remove his turban by Greater Manchester Police, who told him that he had to wear a regulation force helmet.

But when chiefs suggested that he get a protective turban instead, Singh said it reminded him of an episode of the TV sitcom.

Millions watched the show as Del Boy Trotter, played by David Jason, took a delivery of 200 “crash turbans”, which he hoped to sell on to “motorbike-riding Sikhs throughout Peckham”.

Now, Singh says he is seeking 200,000 pounds in compensation for racial discrimination after being left “offended and humiliated”.

He told a Manchester employment hearing: “I am deeply offended. My turban is not an article of clothing, like a shirt or tie – it is part of me, a part of my religion, and I feel as though my religion and I have become an issue for GMP.

Singh said he had been a practising Sikh all his life. He has worn a turban – which is a strict requirement of his faith – since he was 15 years old.

He joined the force in 2003 as a Police Community Support Officer, but problems began when he was asked to go out on cycle patrols.e also said his promotion to a fully-fledged constable was delayed by 18 months after an assistant chief constable said he was concerned by the fact that Singh did not wear a badge on his turban – despite his claims that this would go against his religion.

The tribunal heard that Singh was off sick from April for three months but is now back at his post on light duties.

The Greater Manchester Police denies racial discrimination. The hearing continues. (ANI)

Now, Sikhs accuse BBC’s Asian network of religious bias

London, Aug.20 (ANI): The BBC’s Asian Network is at the center of a race row after Sikhs accused the digital radio station of being insensitive towards their religion.

The BBC were forced to remove a show from their website after Adil Ray, a popular Muslim presenter, received threats from Sikh listeners who accused him of denigrating one of their religious symbols, The Telegraph reports.

The row centres around a show broadcast earlier this month in which Ray discussed a Punjabi music concert in Canada where police had banned a number of Sikhs who refused to remove their “kirpan” dagger. number of listeners believed that Ray had been disparaging about whether Sikhs really needed to carry their kirpan – a ceremonial symbol that baptised Sikhs are expected to wear at all times – and began making complaints and threats against him.

The Birmingham-based network has strongly denied the accusations or any suggestion that Ray meant to mock Sikhism.

The row has nonetheless raised fresh questions over whether the digital network, which was set up eight years ago after the BBC’s then director general Greg Dyke described the corporation as “hideously white”, is serving its Asian listeners.

Last year, Labour peer Lord Ahmed accused the network of being biased against Muslims in favour of Sikhs and Hindus, although an internal investigation by the BBC later exonerated it.

The Sikh Media Monitoring Group has written to the BBC asking for a full transcript of Adil Ray’s show and accused the station of being insensitive towards Sikh listeners. (ANI)

Female Sikh constable wins race claim in the UK

London, July 28 (ANI): A Brit Sikh policewoman is expected to win a five-figure payout after an employment tribunal ruled that she had suffered racist and religious humiliation at the hands of her trainer.

According to the Daily Express, Amandeep Kaur Grewal has claimed that she was singled out for unfair criticism and treatment because of her race by trainer Police Constable Lucinda Rigby.

When Grewal, 38, complained, Rigby told her that the other students were laughing at her behind her back.

A mother of two, Grewal said some of her fellow recruits at the Metropolitan Police College in Hendon, north London, treated her in a “less-than friendly fashion”.

The tribunal in Reading rejected the Met’s claim that trainers had considered Grewal’s skills to be poor compared with other students.

The panel ruled that Grewal, who is now a policewoman in Kingston, southwest London, had been unfairly targeted.

It found the Met guilty of race and religious discrimination. Compensation will be decided later. (ANI)

Gay ruling unites diverse religious leaders

New Delhi, July 9(ANI): Religious leaders from Hindu, Muslim, Jain, Sikh and Christian communities met in the national capital on Thursday to vehemently oppose the July 2 ruling of the Delhi High Court, which has been hailed by sections of the media and sociologists as a landmark court verdict towards legalizing same sex relationships.

They expressed concern that the ruling that gay sex was no longer a crime would erode moral values and Indian ethos.

“This is a conspiracy to finish the country’s moral values and they are a part of it. We should be watchful and make sure an atmosphere is created sustaining our moral values and also avoiding such acts to take place,” said Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Umari, president of Jamaat- e-Islami Hind.

Father Dominic Emmanuel, Director of Delhi Catholic Archdiocese, said though they “sympathize” with the sexual minorities and would not want them hounded as “criminals”, yet a legal immunity would be implied as promoting “unnatural” sexual relationships.

“I feel there is only a technical difference in it. Even they (religious leaders) say we do not consider them as criminals and express our full sympathy towards them (gays). But I feel in all religions it is considered a crime as it is unnatural,” Emmanuel said.

Shankara Acharya Omkar Anandji claimed gay sex would place mankind on the path to doom.

“We believe that the ruling should be annulled else our future generations will be finished,” said Anandji. (ANI)

Protest against Delhi High Court decision on Article 377 on homosexuality in Delhi

New Delhi, July 5 (ANI): A group of Sikh and Hindu activists staged a demonstration in the national capital to protest the Delhi High Court’s recent verdict on Article 377.

The Delhi High Court on Thursday decriminalised Article 377, allowing consensual sex between persons of same gender above 18 years of age.

Members of National Akali Dal along with members of Santan Dharam Sabha, a Hindu organisation, staged the protest and demanded government authorities to step in to prevent passing of the law.

“We are planning to meet the President and the Home Minister. If we do not get assurance from them within a week we will move to the Supreme Court and contest our case there,” Manohar Lal Kumar, one of the activists said.

The current law bans “sex against the order of nature,” and is widely interpreted to mean homosexual sex in India.

The court’s decision to overturn a British colonial era law on same-gender sex dismayed various religious groups but led to a wave of delight among gay activists and health workers.

The verdict can still be challenged in the Supreme Court.

The 1861 law prohibiting “sex against the order of nature”-widely interpreted to mean homosexual sex-has not yet been repealed and carries a prison sentence of up to 10 years.

Petitions to change the 1861 law have so far been firmly rejected by the Governments previously. But there has been some softening up on the stand recently with some ministers suggesting the possibility of revoking the ban was being discussed.

Thursday’s court verdict came after nine years of legal proceedings initiated by India’s gay groups. (ANI)

Sultan of Perak applauds Malay-Sikh community’s spirit

Kuala Lumpur, June 29 (ANI): The Sultan of the Malaysian state of Perak, Azlan Shah, has saluted the Malay-Sikh community for its contributions to the country’s economic, cultural and political fields.

“They form an invaluable and integral part of our colourful social fabric and deserve due recognition for their contribution, as much as any other citizen, to Malaysia’s economic, cultural and political life,” The Star quoted Sultan Azlan Shah, as saying.

Speaking at the launch of a book titled ‘Sikh Community in Malaysia’, Sultan Azlan Shah applauded the way the Sikhs have managed to retain their distinct cultural identity, despite being a minority.

He said their strong religious beliefs, cultural practices and strong sense of community had undeniably afforded them resilience and distinction.

Sikhs made their entry into Malaysia in the 19th century and quickly became known for their gallantry in the security forces, he noted.

“Today, the community’s role and influence extends to other fields, with prominence in professions such as medicine and law,” Sultan Azlan said.

Later, Information, Communications and Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim told reporters that the ministry would work to highlight the cultural heritage of other minority communities.

“We may start a series of shows on RTM highlighting the cultural and musical background of the Sikh community next week,” he added. (ANI)

Akal Takht asks SGPC to reshape Golden temple’s replica in Sangrur

Amritsar, June 21 (ANI): Taking objection to the design of a Gurdwara being constructed as the Golden Temple’s replica at Malerkotla in Sangrur district of Punjab, Akal Takht, the high temporal seat of the Sikhs, has directed Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the premier body of Sikhs, to ensure necessary modifications.

The construction of the controversial gurudwara at Malerkotla has upset devotees as well as the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), the apex body managing Sikh shrines.

On Saturday, the Jathedar of Akal Takht along with other four Jathedars decided that the replica of the Golden Temple should be reshaped with modifications which should include filling the gurdwara’s Sarovar with earth, demolishing four domes made in four corners of gurdwara, and changing gurdwara’s name.

The decision was taken during a meeting of various Sikh religious bodies. The meet was intended to reach a unanimous decision to prevent a Gurudwara Management body to make replica of Sikhs most revered shrine Golden Temple.

However, the roots of the controversy go back 40 years ago. A shrine, owned by Mastuana Dera, a Sikh sect headed by Sant Sadhu Singh, had been under construction since 1967. However, the construction work was stopped twice after the intervention of the SGPC and Akal Takht earlier. But recent attempts to restart that work on the incomplete shrine have invited fury and objections.

On Saturday, Gurbachan Singh, the Jathedar of Akal Takht in a news conference told media that the management committee of the Mastuana Dera appeared before the Akal Takht and submitted its written apology. But no one should be allowed to build the replica of the Golden Temple and anyone involved in such an act should be punished.

Singh said that the Akal Takht had ordered SGPC to reshape the building and SGPC should take over the construction work and no one else would be allowed to construct any thing at the controversial building.

Akal Takht in its direction to SGPC has stated that while reshaping the building of the said Gurudwara all the dooms should be demolished. There should be a single doom constructed as it appears on many gurdwaras. The name of the Gurudwara should be “Singh Sabha Mastuana”.

Jathedar also said that the constructed “Har ki Pauri” and the bridge should also be also pulled down and a new varanda should be constructed around the building.

He said Baba Baldev Singh Suharaewala, who dared to hurt religious sentiments of Sikhs, would be summoned at Akal Takht to submit his clarification.

SGPC President Avtar Singh Makkar has said that SGPC would go abide by the order given by the Akal Takht, the high temporal seat of Sikhs. By Ravinder Singh Robin (ANI)
