Katra traders earn profits during ”Navratra” festival

Katra (Jammu and Kashmir), Mar 23 (ANI): Katra traders and businessmen do brisk business on the occasion of the ongoing ”Navratra” festival.

Thousands of pilgrims throng here on their way to the Hindu shrine of Vaishno Devi.

Katra, which lies in the foothills of Trikuta is visited by devotees all around the year with about 4000-5000 pilgrims visiting the shrine daily.

This in turn boosts the local economy.

“I have always seen that devotees throng this place during Navratras. The devotees believe that visiting this shrine during this time is very auspicious for them,” said Amarjeet Singh, a restaurant owner.

“So, when the tourist inflow increases each and every community, whether he is a businessman, a shopkeeper or a hotelier, earns profit. The people come here and buy things for their family,” Singh added.

On this occasion around 70-75 lakh devotees visit the Shrine each year.

“There is something very special about this festival, as there is normally not much work to do during the rest of the year; but during Navratras the business is good. We do seventy to hundred percent more business during this time than the whole year,” said Anu Dubey, a shopkeeper.

“People come here to buy things and the whole market place is also cleaned up during this festival,” she added.
A pilgrimage to Mata Vaishno Devi shrine during the Navratras is considered most auspicious.

Navratra is celebrated with religious fervour twice in a year, during the spring and the autumn season.

The nine-day festival signifies nine manifestations of Goddess Durga, who stands for power. She is depicted as riding a raging lion, holding weapons in her ten hands.

The shrine of Vaishno Devi is one of the oldest shrines of the country, located at a height of 5,300 feet. (ANI)

Why girls can’t resist the geeks

London, August 20 (ANI): In what may help understand why geeks get the girls, a study on the Satin Bowerbird’s mating rituals has for the first time directly linked a male’s cognitive performance to his luck with the ladies.

“Males that are better problem-solvers are mating with more females,” New Scientist magazine quoted says Jason Keagy, a behavioural ecologist at the University of Maryland in College Park, as saying.

The researcher points out that males construct elaborate shrines – bowers – to woo females, who judge them by the quality of their ornately decorated grass bowers, and elaborate mating dances.

Keagy says that both features let males to show off their smarts.

For their study, Keagy and colleagues developed a bowerbird IQ test to record which males attracted the most females over two breeding seasons.

The tests required males to remove red blocks, a colour they find odious, from their bowers in two different ways.

In one test, the researchers placed blocks under a clear plastic container, which birds had to knock off before removing the blocks. In the second test, they presented males with an unmoveable red block screwed into the ground.

The researchers observed that the smartest males determined that covering the block with leaves was the best way to obscure it.

According to Keagy, one possibility is that the tests reflect on duties connected to mating, and males that are better at problem-solving may construct more appealing bowers.

As to why do females favour more intelligent males, the researcher says that intelligence seems to act as an indicator of the genetic quality of a potential mate, and the genes he will pass onto his offspring.

“A male that has a well functioning brain is probably going to be good at surviving. It’s almost like a way of interpreting all this information about the genetic quality of a male,” Keagy says.

Two recent studies conducted by Geoffrey Miller, of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, and his wife Rosalind Arden, of King’s College in London, have also shown that more intelligent men among Vietnam veterans experienced fewer health problems, such as hernias and cataracts, than less intelligent men.

They also found performance on intelligence to be associated with healthy sperm in a smaller subset of vets.

A research article describing Keagy’s study has been published in the journal Animal Behaviour. (ANI)

Jacko remembered by fans at Apollo Theater in New York

New York, June 28 (ANI): Hundreds of Michael Jackson’s fans paid tribute to the late legend at the Apollo Theater in New York, say reports.

Locals, tourists and fans celebrated Jackson’s life and music with makeshift memorials and shrines.

Georgia Weekes, 71, recalled being at the Jackson 5′s first performance at the Harlem theater 40 years ago, when Michael was 9 and the group won on Amateur Night.

“It was a sold-out show and he had this big Afro. You just knew he was going to be a star,” the New York Post quoted Weekes, of Brooklyn, as saying.

“I remember the choreography, they were so precise. Then the intonation of his voice, he was so unique,” added Khalil Mustafa, 65, of Queens, who also saw the 1969 show.

Fans wrote tributes and remembrances on cardboard, shared memories, listened to Jackson’s music, and even performed moonwalks.

“I came out here to be with people who would respectfully show their sentiments to Michael Jackson and his family,” Annette Thomas, 53, wearing a brown T-shirt emblazoned with images of the Gloved One.

Tour buses and private cars slowed down as they passed the theatre-where the marquee read “In Memory of Michael Jackson. A True Apollo Legend”-so that passengers could listen one more time to his music.

Young Jackson aficionados converged on the renowned Harlem theater on West 125th Street to mark the ‘Thriller’ star’s death as a historic moment.

“The passing of a legend only happens every once in a while. I wanted to come when James Brown died, but I couldn’t make it. I felt I couldn’t miss Michael Jackson,” said Nick Rumaczyk, 24, of upstate New York.

Dozens of Detroit mourners placed stuffed animals and other mementos at a makeshift memorial at the Hitsville USA building, the original home of Motown Records, where Jackson’s career was launched. (ANI)

A batch of 1,935 Amarnath pilgrims leaves Jammu for holy shrine

Jammu, June 20 (ANI): After initial weather related hindrances, a fresh batch of 1,935 pilgrims left Jammu on Saturday for its onward journey to the holy Amarnath cave shrine in Kashmir.

The batch comprises 852 men, 325 women, 54 children and 704 ascetics left from the base camp at Bhagwati Nagar in Jammu at around 0450 hours amid tight security, officials said. It will travel though the Baltal route.

A total of 4,695 pilgrims including Saturday’s batch have left Jammu for the cave shrine since the beginning of the Yatra on June 15.

Amarnath pilgrimage was obstructed for three days following bad weather prevailing in Kashmir valley before resuming on Friday.

Presently, the authorities were allowing only the Baltal route for the annual pilgrimage as the Pahalgam route has not been fully cleared of snow.

The Amarnath caves are one of the most famous shrines in Hinduism, dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in Jammu and Kashmir.

The holy shrine is claimed to be over 5,000 years old and forms an important part of ancient Hindu mythology. Inside the main Amarnath cave lies an ice stalagmite resembling the Shiva Linga, which waxes during May to August and gradually wanes thereafter.

This Shivalinga is said to grow and shrink with the phases of the moon. (ANI)

Kosovo bishop could face tribunal over latest run-in with Church

Kosovo bishop could face tribunal over latest run-in with ChurchBelgrade – A controversial Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) bishop is likely to face a tribunal for his latest run-in with the church over a drug rehabilitation centre where addicts are severely abused, reports said Tuesday.

The ultra-conservative Kosovo Bishop Artemije has outraged the SPC assembly and its government by refusing to shut down the facility linked to his diocese.

The centre is billed as a “spiritual rehabilitation centre” but has been exposed in media reports showing footage of addicts being subjected to severe physical abuse, including being beaten with shovels.

Belgrade newspapers said criminal charges against Artemije were pending.

The controversy follows a string of disagreements between the 74- year-old bishop and his Church.

Just last week, the SPC synod overruled Artemije’s decision not to allow US Vice-President Joe Biden to visit the Decani monastery, the ancient seat of the SPC in Kosovo.

Artemije, who has in the past met top US and European officials, described the US as a foe of Serbia in announcing his decision.

Over the years, he has ignored church orders to sort out his murky property affairs, dissolve a shadowy construction company he operates and to cooperate with the international community in the rebuilding of Serbian shrines destroyed or damaged in Kosovo.

So far, Artemije has avoided sanctions amid a power struggle within the Church after its Patriarch Pavle became incapacitated some 18 months ago, leaving a vacuum.

In light of changes in the synod and its consolidation earlier this month, Artemije could face possible impeachment by the Church, Tuesday’s reports said.

It was however unclear what action could be taken to bring Artemije to order in a country where bishops have virtually limitless authority in their dioceses. (dpa)

Revival of wood carving in Kashmir

Srinagar, Apr 13 (ANI): The six hundred-year-old traditional net wood carving of Kashmir, known for its intricate designs and delicate handwork, is being rejuvenated.

Fearing extinction of this traditional art, the artisans have now developed new and attractive designs to revive this trade.

“This is almost a 600 year old tradition. It did stop for some time in between. It only remained in old houses. There were few artisans left. I have been involved in this for the past eight years. Now people have started taking interest in it. We have carved in many buildings in Srinagar including that of the Jammu and Kashmir bank. People like it in their houses. We only use deodar wood in it,” said A. Gani, an artisan.

The wood carvings had high demand as the affluent people of the state used it for window panes and doors of their houses but with the passage of time the demand for this art declined.

“This used to be done in only windows earlier. In my old house, there was a lot of wood work. But soon cement started being used. But in my new house, I got wood carving done. This is not a new invention though. It used to be done in Kashmir earlier,” said Ali Mohammed, a resident.

Besides the residential houses, this art is now being used in parks and gardens.

The art was mostly used in the palaces of maharajas. It can also be seen in almost all the shrines of valley.

With the rejuvenation of the trade, numerous artists in Kashmir are expected to find employment. By Showkat Jan ANI)

Mexican police destroy 30 chapels to “Saint Death” of drug gangs

Mexico City – Mexican federal authorities used bulldozers to bring down more than 30 chapels devoted to “Saint Death” – a figure that is worshipped by drug traffickers – in the northern city of Nuevo Laredo, the daily Reforma reported Wednesday.

Although the figure is venerated by people from many walks of life, the saint has been adopted by drug gangs. In recent years, there has been a proliferation around Mexico in the construction of such chapels – varying in size from small shrines to larger buildings – from materials including brick, marble, iron and tiles.

They use Roman Catholic symbolism and ceremonies, although the formal church rejects worship of “Saint Death” as a pagan tradition and the authorities have long removed the tradition from the list of the country’s religious associations. In Mexico City, there is even a sanctuary and a so-called bishop – a man with no known ties to drug trafficking – for worship of “Saint Death.”

The image of the saint is a skeleton dressed and adorned as a woman, and is not based on any particular Roman Catholic saint. Many criminals, but also people without a criminal record and even police officers, have taken it as their patron saint.

According to the report in Reforma, the chapels that were destroyed in Nuevo Laredo were on an access road to the city. One was a two-floor building and featured a 2-metre-tall image of Saint Death.

The owner of one of the altars told reporters that he had spent some 13,700 dollars to build it and decorate it.

“When you go in or out of Nuevo Laredo you see these chapels, which are most impressive, spectacular, but people constantly complain that they give the impression that this is a place for criminals,” an unidentified official source told the daily, to explain the decision.

More than 6,300 people were killed last year in Mexico in incidents linked to organized crime and drug trafficking. The authorities have massively deployed soldiers and federal police officers to combat crime. (dpa)
