Regional political party protests against Sania Mirza’s marriage with Shoaib Malik

Coimbatore, Mar. 31 (ANI): Activists of a regional political party in Coimbatore on Wednesday held a protest against the much-speculated marriage of Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza with Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik.

The marriage was announced on Tuesday and will take place in April.

The protestors condemned Mirza”s decision to marry a Pakistani cricketer and raised slogans against her, the Central Government and the Andhra Pradesh Government.

They demanded the tennis player be deported from the country. They also demanded the federal government to take back all the awards given to her.

“There have been reports that Sania Mirza will marry Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik, which the Hindu Makkal Katchi, regional Hindu political outfit strongly condemns,” said Senthil Kumar, an activist of Hindu Makkal Katchi.

“Because we feel that the cricket player basically belongs to a country, which aids and abets terrorism against India. It is still to handover the Mumbai attack accused to India. Moreover, this is an insult to 100 crore Indian people and Muslims living in India,” he added.

“We also demand that the highest awards such as Padma Shri should be taken back from her immediately and we want to deport her from India.”

The 23-year-old tennis player was the first Indian to win a WTA tour event in 2005 and reached her highest world ranking of 27 two years ago although she has since slipped to the 92nd spot.

Malik, 28, has been fighting a 12-month ban by the Pakistan Cricket Board for poor performance and indiscipline. (ANI)

BJP will solve its problems, soon, says key RSS leader

New Delhi, Aug. 30 (ANI): Senior Rashtriya Swayam Sewak (RSS) leader Madan Das Devi on Sunday said he was confident about the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) taking appropriate steps to resolve all of its problems, including the issue of the party succession plan.

Addressing a press conference in the capital this morning after between RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and LK Advani, Devi said: “We (RSS) are hopeful that the crisis in the BJP will be resolved. The RSS is assured that the BJP will overcome all problems.”

“We all think that a large party such as the BJP has the capability of being given new direction and end its problems. Important BJP leaders met leaders of the RSS. Shri L.K.Advani and other senior BJP leaders met us. We discussed issues of national importance, party issues etc. They have assured us that the problems of the party will be resolved,” he added.

Efforts to resolve the growing crisis within the BJP continued on Sunday, with Bhagwat travelling to Advani’s residence here to hold a breakfast meeting.

Bhagwat, who was accompanied by senior RSS leader Madandas Devi, is expected to continue discussions on a new roadmap for the BJP, including a possible change of leadership.

Sources said the BJP will most likely announce a succession plan on Sunday. It is indicated that individual responsibilities in the party would be finalised in the coming weeks.

On Saturday, Bhagwat stepped up efforts to mediate an end to the BJP crisis. He held hectic parleys with L K Advani and top leaders including Murli Manohar Joshi.

There were indications that BJP could come out with some statement tomorrow but Sangh Parivar sources said nothing spectacular could be expected.

Advani is reportedly under pressure from rebels to step down as Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha.

Various names are under consideration, including Arun Jaitely, Sushma Swaraj and Bal Apte. However, both the RSS and the BJP have maintained that they were not discussing any succession plan. (ANI)

Cash for Vote scam: Kulkarni defends Advani against Jaswant attack

New Delhi, Aug.29 (ANI): A former aide of Leader of Opposition L.K. Advani, Sudheendra Kulkarni, on Saturday, defended the former on the issue of the cash for vote scam that rocked proceedings in Parliament in July 2008.

Kulkarni’s defence of Advani came a day after expelled BJP leader Jaswant Singh fired a fresh salvo at Advani accusing him of being “at the centre” of the cash-for-votes scam drama enacted in the Lok Sabha last year.

“I am saddened to see that the name of Shri L.K. Advani has been unnecessarily and negatively mentioned in this episode. I remain firm in my belief that the party did the right thing by attempting to expose this shameful scandal, which remains a blot on India’s democracy. I do not regret my own participation in the attempt to expose this scandal, through a sting operation carried out by a reputed television channel,” Kulkarni told a private television channel

“The TV channel had agreed to telecast the sting operation after catching the culprits red-handed on tape. Shockingly, the channel backed out of its commitment at the last moment. As a result, the people of India could not get to know the truth of this scandal. My role was that of a facilitator in the whistle-blowing operation. I am willing to face any fair inquiry,” added Kulkarni.

Jaswant Singh had said of Advani’s role in the cash for vote scam: “It’s a great sense of pity. Here was a man who was consumed by an ambition to be Prime Minister, and that desire made him commit so many mistakes.”

“Do you know this whole wretched thing of money for votes is a classic example of wrong decision making and it’s extremely troubling that he did not stand up and say no. Advaniji was at the centre of this whole drama,” he told Outlook magazine. (ANI)

Sikh guru dies after Austrian temple attack

Vienna – A 57-year old Indian Sikh guru died in the Austrian capital Vienna Monday following an armed attack involving rival Sikh groups at a temple the previous day, which also left at least 16 people injured.

According to the Austrian APA news agency Sant Rama Nand died of his injuries in hospital overnight.

The condition a second guest guru who was speaking at the temple, Sant Niranjan Dass, 68, was stable after undergoing emergency surgery, doctors said.

Witnesses said six bearded and turbaned men equipped with at least one firearm stormed the temple, located in a residential area in Vienna, during sermons by the guest speakers.

The attack triggered panic among the congregation of at least 150 – some reports spoke of 350 – in which few of the men wore the traditional untrimmed beard and long hair woven into a turban that is typical Sikhism practice.

“Suddenly they took a gun and shot directly at the preachers,” said one woman present. “The people – children and everyone else – ran out. They ran for their lives.”

During the melee, members of the congregation pounced upon the attackers and overpowered them, beating some severely. Four of the attackers are among the severely injured, police said. Two of the attackers, who suffered only light injuries, were detained by police.

The visiting gurus, had been previously guests at the temple, which was first opened in 2005. Though having many followers in India, the two, who follow the Shri Guri Ravidas Sabha movement, were rejected as heterodox by a rival Vienna Sikh community.

Police believe the conflict was based on doctrinal differences between the more traditional Sikh community and the liberal group whose temple was the scene of the attack.

In India, the chief minister of the state of Punjab, which is home to a large number of Sikhs, called the attack an “outrage” and urged India’s foreign ministry to call on the Austrian authorities to thoroughly investigate the event.(dpa)

Mother India fights back

RANI PAL, the mother of slain BSP MLA Raju Pal, has filed her nomination from Pratapgarh as an Independent candidate. She said she was fighting the election to avenge the murder of her son allegedly at the hands of Atiq and his brother Ashraf.

The mother and wife of the slain BSP MLA from city north, who was killed by a gang of assassins on January 25, 2005, had fainted after hearing the news of her death. When the duo regained consciousness, they had vowed to bring Atiq and Ashraf to justice.

Puja, who had married Raju barely nine days before his murder, has taken on Atiq, the MP from Phulpur, in court. But her mother-in-law has other ideas.

“The aim is not only to defeat him, but also to tell the electorate that he (Atiq) is a murderer and not fit for public life,” alleged Rani, who recently gave up her job as a health supervisor so she could contest elections. Shri Kant, a close aid of the slain MLA’s mother, alleged that Raju had been murdered because he had defeated Ashraf in the Assembly elections from the city west constituency.

“The brother-duo against whom there are dozens of criminal cases could not digest the idea of suffering defeat at the hands of an ordinary person like Raju,” Kant said. “I had been impatiently waiting for the day I would be able to contest elections against this man and tell voters what he has done to a mother.

I will continue to contest all future elections against him no matter from which corner of the country he fights,” Rani told Hindustan Times. Rani is ready to go to the extent of filing another nomination from Phulpur in case Atiq’s wife Shaista Parveen plunges into the fray as an Independent from Phulpur, Kant added.
