In two days, Games tickets worth Rs 80 lakh sold

New Delhi, June 5 — In just two days since the sale began, tickets worth more than Rs 80 lakh were sold for 19th edition of the Commonwealth Games to be held from October 3 to 14 in the Capital. On day one, 1700 tickets worth Rs 20 lakh were sold.

“The response is overwhelming. We hope to reach our target very fast,” a Commonwealth Games (CWG) organising committee spokesperson said. He, however, could not specify the number of tickets sold so far. The organising committee expect to sell 17 lakh tickets generating Rs 60-70crore.

Tickets can be bought from seven branches of Central Bank of India, five Hero Honda showrooms and from the Commonwealth Games (CWG) website. Ticket are priced from Rs 50 to Rs 1,000, but prices for the opening ceremony have been kept between Rs 1,000 and Rs 50,000 and for the closing, from Rs 750 to Rs 50,000.

An added advantage for those queueing up to purchase tickets is that each ticket holder would be entitled for free travel in the Delhi Metro and DTC buses to reach and return from the venue on the day of the event.

Commonwealth Games tickets launched online

New Delhi, June 4 (ANI): Suresh Kalmadi, the Chairman of Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (CGOC), on Friday launched the sale of online tickets for the Commonwealth Games.

Kalmadi issued the first ticket to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Tejinder Khanna.
Addressing media persons, Kalmadi said the tickets are priced reasonably to encourage more and more participation of people in the event.

“The tickets are reasonably priced. Rupees 50 is the minimum ticket. Any ticket holder can go free by public transportation. And, I am grateful to the government of Delhi for having waved aside entertainment tax. No entertainment tax on this ticket, that is why we could have the prices so low,” Kalmadi added.

Kalmadi said he was confident that the sports loving people will contribute to the successful delivery of the Games that is being held in Asia for only the second time and in India for the first time.

He hoped the games organizing committee would witness a huge turnout of spectators during the games.

The tickets will be available in four different slabs and will range from Rs. 50 to Rs. 1000 for all sporting events. While the tickets for the inaugural and closing ceremony to be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi are priced between Rs. 750 to Rs. 50,000.

The tickets will be available at more than 50 outlets of Central Bank of India and Hero Honda showrooms. (ANI)

GM to Reinstate Nearly 600 Dealers

Franchises took the automaker to arbitration to save their businesses.
NEW YORK – General Motors Co. will reinstate more than half the dealerships it targeted to drop from its network.
GM executives said Friday that about 600 dealerships out of the 1,100 seeking to stay with GM will receive letters giving them the option to remain with the automaker.

GM last year told 2,000 dealerships it would revoke their franchise agreements in October 2010 as part of its restructuring. The company has said it needs to shrink the number of showrooms to keep the remaining ones healthy.

The dealerships, who say they have been treated unfairly, have been appealing the decision.

The cuts to GM’s 6,000-dealer network were designed to compensate for much lower demand for cars and trucks, but some dealers have argued that lots that are still profitable are at risk, and that the automaker hasn’t offered enough details about how it’s choosing which businesses to shutter.

GM and Chrysler, which has slashed 789 dealers, have said they would reconsider the cuts. The decision was a compromise meant to avoid federal legislation that would require that the showrooms be kept open.

Under the revised plans, dealerships would get face-to-face reviews, binding arbitration and faster payments to help dealers slated for shutdown.

Congress-brokered talks between dealer groups and the automakers began in September. But those talks stalled over disputes about the review process for targeted dealerships and other issues. Looming over the fight has been the threat of federal legislation to deal with the closures. Lawmakers warned that if a deal wasn’t reached, that legislation would move forward.

The White House has opposed the legislation over concerns that it could hurt GM’s and Chrysler’s efforts to rebound from their government-led bankruptcies.

GM to Reinstate 600 Dealerships Slated to Be Cut

GM executives said Friday that the dealerships — more than half of those seeking to stay with the automaker — will receive letters giving them the option to remain open.

NEW YORK – General Motors Co. will reinstate 661 dealerships it sought to drop from its sales network.

GM executives said Friday that the dealerships — more than half of those seeking to stay with the automaker — will receive letters giving them the option to remain open. GM said it would not have enough time to negotiate with all 1,100 dealerships that appealed the automaker’s decision to close them within a four-month window imposed by the federal government.

“By doing this we save a lot of time, energy and dollars,” said Jim Bunnell, GM general manager of network support, saying the company wished to avoid a “very large arbitration process.”

As part of its restructuring, GM last year told about 2,000 dealerships it would not renew their franchise agreements once they run out in October 2010. But the dealerships have said GM treated them unfairly, and last month Congress passed a law requiring an appeals process for the dealers.

GM’s decision to keep the additional showrooms open effectively shrinks the number of appeals it has to contend with. Arbitration hearings for the dealers who didn’t get offers but still want to stay with GM will begin later this month.

The cuts to GM’s 6,000-dealer network were designed to compensate for much lower demand for cars and trucks, but some dealers have argued that lots that are still profitable are at risk, and that the automaker hasn’t offered enough details about how it’s choosing which businesses to shutter.

GM would not offer any details on Friday about which dealerships it was reinstating and where they are located. It said it chose the 661 based on a variety of criteria, including sales and other business factors.

The company said it hoped to have every letter of intent with dealerships by Monday. At that point, dealers have 10 days to respond and 60 days to meet a set of criteria that would allow them to stay with GM.

A spokeswoman with Chrysler Group LLC, which has cut 789 dealers, said the company was preparing a statement in response to questions about whether they also intended to reinstate dropped dealerships. Chrysler showrooms slated for closure are also appealing to stay open, though it remained unclear how many.

Michael Boudreau, an auto industry turnaround expert with O’Keefe & Associates, said GM likely saw the reinstatement of the dealers as the “lesser of the two evils” versus the costs of litigating their termination.

“It’s not exactly what they wanted to do, and it’s always I think a little embarrassing when you have to make changes based on an arbitration process, but they’ve had to adjust and move forward,” he said.

Boudreau added that the decision could have ripple effects.

“The Chrysler dealers are taking a close look at this,” he said.

Tammy Darvish of the Washington-area Darcars chain, which has three dealerships slated for closure, said she was encouraged by GM’s decision.

“If they are genuinely, truly sincere, it’s overwhelmingly heartwarming,” Darvish said of the company’s offer to allow dealers to demonstrate their eligibility to remain open.

But as of Friday, Darvish said she didn’t know if her franchises are among those being reinstated. She said she plans to go into arbitration if they are not.

Archaeologists unearth cache of ancient artifacts in Egypt

Cairo, July 9 (ANI): Archaeologists have unearthed a cache near the Western gate of the National Museum in Cairo, which contained a table made of limestone, a fragment of a slab with hieroglyphic inscriptions, some stones, and the base of a pharaonic pillar, which date back to the pharaonic period around 1,300 years BC.

“This type of slab was quite widespread during the era of the Pharaohs, who used it to mark a special occasion,” Hawass told The Egyptian Gazette.

“The slab shows the head of a cobra,” Hawass said, adding that foreign archaeologists were in the habit of burying antiquities they had considered ‘useless’ in the Museum’s garden.

“The antiquities will be analysed,” said Hawass, who has been supervising a project for giving a facelift to the Museum.

The project, which is near completion, includes upgrading the museum and adding new, showrooms, meeting rooms, a library, a bookshop and a cafeteria. (ANI)

Soon, eco-friendly washing machines that use just 1 cup of water

London, June 22 (ANI): Water conservation usually takes a backseat while doing laundry, but not anymore, for now a new environmentally friendly washing machine, which uses use only one cup of water and leaves clothes virtually dry, is all set to hit showrooms next year.

Developed at the University of Leeds, the technologyaims save up to 90 per cent of water used by conventional machines, use 30 per cent less energy, and thus can have the environmental impact of taking two million cars off the road.

The washing machine works by replacing most of the water with thousands of tiny, reusable nylon polymer beads, which attract and absorb dirt under humid conditions.

Only a small amount of water and detergent is needed to dampen the clothes, loosen stains and create the water vapour that allows the beads to work.

And after the cycle is finished, the beads fall through a mesh in the machine’s drum, and can be re-used up to a hundred times.

The company behind the technology, Xeros, is initially aiming at the commercial washing market, including hotels and dry cleaners.

Bill Westwater, Xeros chief executive, said that growing pressure on companies and consumers to cut water usage and carbon emissions might boost demand for the system.

“We’ve got an eye on the consumer but it will take time and we hope commercial success could act as a springboard to move into the consumer market,” Times Online quoted Westwater as saying.

IKEA drops investment plans in India worth $1bn

NEW DELHI: The iconic $ 31-billion Scandinavian home products giant, IKEA, has put on hold its plans to set up 25 showrooms across the country
for an investment of around $ 1 billion. In an internal communication this week, IKEA told its stakeholders that Indian investment rules do not encourage it to go ahead with its investment plans — at least not in the near future.

The country’s norms on foreign investments in retail stipulate that the foreign company can hold no more than a 51% stake and must have an Indian partner. As IKEA’s distinctive showrooms are like sprawling malls, with flat pack furniture, accessories, bathroom and kitchen items, they require high investment. And IKEA has so far been unable to find an Indian partner with not just deep pockets but readiness to invest a matching amount in a joint venture.

It’s learnt that IKEA was hopeful of the rules being relaxed by the new government, but was jolted by Pratibha Patil’s silence on the issue in her presidential address that outlined the UPA government’s agenda. It may have lost heart completely when commerce minister Anand Sharma said that FDI norms are not likely to be changed in the near future, and decided to opt out of India.

When contacted, a top IKEA source confirmed the company’s decision. But they were quick to add that India as a market can’t be ignored by IKEA indefinitely. “In a few years we are bound to reconsider our decision,” they said.

IKEA had planned its first showroom near Dwarka, at a location that’s between Delhi and Gurgaon. It had also hired 25-30 people for this venture. Their fate now is not known. Otherwise, IKEA has been sourcing many materials from India and employs around 11,000 in this operation, while it claims to be indirectly employing another 60,000. This outsourcing business is estimated at around Rs 1,900 crore.

India’s retail market is estimated at over $350 billion, with organized retail accounting for 5% of it. An Indian economic think-tank optimistically projected early last year that the market size could grow to $590 billion by 2012 and organized retail could be a meatier 16% of that market. The economic downturn might have since dampened these projections.

IKEA was founded in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad in Sweden and it is owned by a Dutch-registered foundation controlled by the Kamprad family. IKEA an an acronym comprising the initials of the founder (Ingvar Kamprad), the farm where he grew up (Elmtaryd) and his home parish (Agunnaryd).

IKEA operates over 300 stores in over 40 countries. It began exploring options here in 2006 and has also spoken earlier too of being stymied by government policy.

So Indian homes, it appears, will just have to wait a while longer for some Scandinavian chic.

First phase of Nano bookings begins

The first phase of bookings for the Rs. 1-lakh ‘dream car’ Tata Nano began on Thursday, April 9, with crowds thronging the Tata Motors showrooms, and specially-opened booking counters in banks, including State Bank of India, which is Tata Motors’ key partner in selling and receiving the booking forms.

The forms, costing Rs. 300, are also available at Tata Indicom centres, Titan showrooms, Westside and Croma stores. The booking for the wonder car – which can also be done online – will close on April 25.

With the cost of the three Nano variants lying between Rs. 1.23 lakh and Rs. 1.72 lakh in Delhi, the booking amount, between Rs. 95,000 and Rs. 1.4 lakh, can either paid in one go or be financed from SBI and fifteen other banks. Only one lakh customers – chosen through a computerized draw within 60 days after the bookings close, will be applicable for availing the Nano launch price.

Since countless counters have been opened for bookings, there was neither any visible scamper for forms in the showrooms, nor are there exact figures available with regard to the number of bookings done on day 1.

Nonetheless, Sumeet Partha – branch manager, Tata Motors Finance Limited – said: “Among the applicants, most of them were from the middle class, be it service holders or businessmen. Most preferred loans instead of buying Nano at one go!”

Amidst all these trends, the company has said that it will take over a year to deliver the first 100,000 cars.

Since the Nano was first shown, the main production plant had to be moved from Singur in West Bengal following protests over acquisition of agricultural lands by the State Government for the setting up of Nano factory.

Consequently, Tata Motors posted its first loss in seven years with its shares declining by 70 per cent and its credit rating downgraded.

According to Ratan Tata, the first 100,000 Nano owners will be randomly picked from bookings made between April 9 and 25, and their prices will be protected. (ANI)

World’s first flying car set for lift-off next month

London, Jan 11 (ANI): The Terrafugia Transition, which can transform itself from a two-seater road car to a plane in 15 seconds, is scheduled to take to the air next month.

If it survives its first test flight, the technological breakthrough, is expected to land in showrooms in about 18 months’ time.

Its manufacturer says it is easy to keep and run since it uses normal unleaded fuel and will fit into a garage, reports TimesOnline.

Carl Dietrich, who runs the Massachusetts-based Terrafugia, said: “This is the first really integrated design where the wings fold up automatically and all the parts are in one vehicle.”

The Transition has been developed by former Nasa engineers and is powered by the same 100bhp engine on the ground and in the air.

Terrafugia claims it will be able to fly up to 500 miles on a single tank of petrol at a cruising speed of 115mph.

However, up to now it has been tested only on roads at up to 90mph.

Dietrich said he had already received 40 orders, despite an expected retail price of 200,000 dollars.

“For an airplane that’s very reasonable, but for a car that’s very much at the high end,” he conceded.(ANI)
