Mamata Banerjee hits out at Leftists

New Delhi, Sept 16 (ANI): Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee hailed the good showing of Trinamool Congress in civic polls in Darjeeling district as victory over state-sponsored terrorism.

In the 47-member district council, the Trinamool Congress and the Congress combine bagged 15 seats each. The Left Front, led by the Communist Party of India (Marxists) won 17 seats.

“I think this is a victory of democracy against state-sponsored terrorism, the autocracy and every day they are making conspiracy against the United Progressive Alliance and the central government and the central ministers also. This is their habit. This fort was absolutely the red fort and you know how Darjeeling … it is a prestigious district. It is a very prestigious victory,” Banerjee told reporters in national capital New Delhi.

Banerjee also accused the State Government of not helping the Central Government’s efforts to curb Maoists.

“P. Chidambaram is very correct. He said he was trying his best but he was not getting any help from the State Government. When the Central Government is trying to do something, then the state police are giving information to the Maoists that the Central police are coming. They did not allow the Central police to come to the actual area where they exist,” said Banerjee.

Maoists have formally been labelled as a terrorist group by the Central Government. (ANI)

‘Bruno’ banned in Ukraine over ‘morality damaging’ claims

Washington, July 16(ANI): Ukraine has banned Sasha Baron Cohen’s new comedy film ‘Bruno’ claiming that it will “damage the morality” of locals.

The movie that has been a huge hit in both US and UK has come under fire in the eastern European country for apparently “unjustified” shots of genitals and homosexual sex scenes.

The move to stop the film from being screened in the country came after nine out of the culture ministry’s 14 members agreed to veto its release, Contactmusic reports.

In a letter to the country’s film distributor Sinergia, officials wrote: “The Ukrainian ministry of culture has decided to ban all showings of this film on Ukrainian territory.

“The film contains unjustified showing of genital organs and sexual relations and shows homosexual acts and homosexual perversions in an explicitly realist manner. (It also contains) sadistic manifestations which could damage the morality of citizens.”

The film stars Cohen as gay Austrian fashionista Bruno. (ANI)

Afghanistan offensive showing signs of success: Brown

London/Sangin (Helmand, Afghanistan), July 12 (ANI): British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has said that the British troop offensive against the Taliban in southern Afghanistan is showing signs of success, despite the force losing fifteen troopers over the last month.

In an interview with the British Forces Broadcasting Service, Brown paid tribute to the “sacrifice” of the soldiers who had died.

“I know that this has been a difficult summer – it is going to be a difficult summer. These sacrifices that have hurt so many families in our country are ones that the whole of Britain will want to acknowledge. I think the operation we are engaged with is showing signs of success. Our troops are making progress as they attempt to make the area safe,” Brown said.

Brown’s comments came after parents of some soldiers killed in Afghanistan accused the Government of starving British forces of urgently needed equipment.

They joined politicians and former Armed Forces chiefs in demanding that ministers provide more money to pay for helicopters and armoured vehicles for troops fighting in Helmand.

Brown said commanders had assured him in a lengthy briefing that the Operation Panther’s Claw offensive to drive the Taliban from central Helmand province was making “considerable progress”.

He acknowledged that there was public concern about the campaign, but he insisted that it was part of a “clear strategy” to clear the terrorist networks from Afghanistan and Pakistan in order to protect the streets of Britain.

“This is a patriotic duty. Of course people want to know if the action we are taking is the right action. It comes back to terrorism on the streets of Britain. If we were to allow the Taliban to be back in power in Afghanistan and al-Qaeda then to have the freedom of manoeuvre it had before 2001, then we would be less safe as a country,” Brown said. (ANI)

Soon, black and white e-readers to be replaced by colour version

London, May 18 (ANI): An American company is gearing up to replace black and white e-book readers with a colour version, expected to be on the market by the end of 2010.

E Ink Corporation of Cambridge, Massachusetts, says that it will be demonstrating a colour version of its e-paper at the Society for Information Display conference in San Antonio, Texas, on May 31.

The company says that the new version of the e-book reader would be aimed at having a reflective display that uses very little power and is as easy on the eye as the printed word.

It has revealed that the colour version will be based on technology called an electrophoretic display.

In the new colour display, each pixel will be split into four sub-pixels showing red, green, blue and white in their “on” states, which means squeezing four times as many transistors beneath each pixel to control the electrodes, which has been a challenge too far- until now.

“The transistor resolution is now getting fine enough,” New Scientist magazine quoted Sri Peruvemba of E Ink as saying. (ANI)

M K Azhagiri, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi’s son, registered success from the Madurai Lok Sabha seat trouncing CPI-M’s P Mohan by a margin of over 140,000 votes. (ANI)

Provincial poll in Sri Lanka’s Western Province opens

Colombo – A provincial poll in Sri Lanka’s Western Province which consists of the capital Colombo and two adjoining districts opened Saturday, election officials said, despite a deteriorating humanitarian situation in the north of the country as government forces keep up their campaign to crush Tamil rebels. Some 3.8 million voters in the Colombo, Kalutara and Gampaha districts started are registered to vote in the elections which commenced at 7 am (0130 GMT) and is scheduled to end at 4 pm.

Voters are choosing 102 members to the provincial council which overseas provincial administration often serves as a stepping stone to parliament.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) , which campaigned on a platform solely based on the military’s achievements in liberating rebel-held areas in the north-east, are expected to win, despite a strong campaign showing but the opposition UnitedNational Party.

Rajapaksa has so far convincingly won five previous provincial council elections. Polls in two more provinces are due to be held shortly.

Recapturing areas held by the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has been the main theme for the UPFA as Rajapaksa prepares to hold early presidential polls nearly two years ahead of schedule in a bid to capitalize on the military victories.

Opposition parties have accused the ruling party for misusing government resources and the state media as well as intimidating opposition supporters.

Results are expected to start come in after midnight and the vote count is due to be completed by Sunday noon.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation of thousands of people trapped in the last remaining rebel-held areas worsens as the Sri Lankan Army vowed to continue its offensive operations again the LTTE, which has been fighting for more than 25 years for a separate state for the Tamil ethnic minority in majority-Sinhalese Sri Lanka. Winehouse’s mum accuses Fielder-Civil of being ‘a gold-digger’

London, Apr 23 (ANI): Amy Winehouse’s mother has accused Blake Fielder-Civil of being a gold-digger.

Fielder Civil had filed for divorce from the ‘Back To Black’ hitmaker on the grounds of adultery, after he saw pictures of her canoodling with another man in St. Lucia.

However, his case weakened after recent reports revealed that he has impregnated a fellow rehabber named Gilleen Morris, who was being treated along with him at the Pheonix Future rehab.

Now, Winehouse’s mother has claimed that she would not be dazed if Fielder Civil tries to demand for big bucks during the divorce settlement, as he wants to acquire as much as possible.

“It sounds like his hands are outstretched not only for him, but for this person he’s made pregnant. To me it seems like a case of ‘lets get our hands out for the money,” The Daily Star quoted Janis, as saying.

Janis also revealed that Blake’s philandering with fellow rehabber came as a shock to Winehouse, who was keen to sort things out with him.

“Amy did everything she could to get back from St. Lucia to support him, and he had been doing that. It’s a blow. He’s divorcing her for adultery but what about this? I think it’s a case of Blake’s showing his true colours now,” Janis added. (ANI)

Easter tourism a barometer for Croatian economy, government

Zagreb – In the midsts of the global economic meltdown, tourism-dependent Croatia is anxiously awaiting the first results of the Easter holiday break. With holiday-makers to the former Yugoslav republic providing nearly a quarter of the country’s GDP, tourism figures aren’t just of interest to the hotel and catering trade – they could well affect the prospects for the government in Zagreb.

Even though first signs show high visitor numbers and packed hotels, any relief is tempered by the knowledge that the year ahead will still be tricky.

Official statistics are not available yet, but it is clear that the numbers of holiday-makers exceeded some of the bleaker forecasts from experts – including the government’s own Tourism Minister, Damir Bajs.

Bajs predicted a 3 per cent decline in visitor numbers for 2009. Others went further, with the head of the national hotel owners organisation, Franko Palma, predicting a double-digit drop.

Despite the good showing over the Easter weekend, he cautions against too much optimism.

“Last year Easter fell earlier in the season and the weather was nasty, so it isn’t clever to jump to a conclusion that growth for Easter this year is a real signal,” Palma said.

Palma said the crunch periods were the so-called black holes of May, and late August to early September.

There is much riding on it. Indeed, the success or failure of the tourist season may actually be the hottest political question in the country.

Tourism is Croatia’s biggest income-earner and a bad season could force Prime Minister Ivo Sanader’s cabinet into a second emergency budget in the autumn and to request credit from the International Monetary Fund – both of which would be unpopular measures.

With around 9.5 billion dollars last year, tourism generated 22 per cent of the Croatian gross domestic product (GDP), more than any other sector of the economy.

In its best ever year, 2008, around 10.6 million tourists came to Croatia, mostly staying along its beautiful, 1,100-kilometre Adriatic coast.

One in five of all tourists were from Germany, with Austria and Slovenia close behind, with in total 54.6 million nights being spent in Croatia by tourists.

Croatia’s tourism sector has grown and gone up market to match the influx, with seven 5-star hotels and 67 4-star hotels springing up in the past two years alone.

After a long boom, predictions of 3 to 11 percent drops in revenue have created waves of panic in the industry.

The government responded with a series of measures to boost tourism, not least a 14.5 million dollar advertising campaign in strategic markets.

It even advertised in its former Yugoslav sister republics, Serbia and Bosnia, with whom relations are prickly.

Another part of the government’s emergency action plan was to scrap entry visas for visitors from the emerging markets of Russian and Ukraine, scrapping entry charges for some museums, and employing famous athletes and celebrities to promote Croatia as “tourism ambassadors.”

In a sign of the straightened times, old Russian jet aircraft, long-since banned from Croatian airports because they are too noisy for EU – which Croatia is due to join – will again be landing this summer, as they bring in spending guests.

Despite all this, the real fortunes of the critical Croatian tourism industry will only be known at the end of the season.

“It started well, but the finish is more important,” a columnist with the internet portal Net concluded. (dpa)

Leonard Nimoy surprises fans with special Star Trek screening

London, Apr 9 (ANI): Spock actor Leonard Nimoy gave his fans a pleasant surprise when he screened the new ‘Star Trek’ film for audiences, who had come to watch 1982′s ‘Wrath of Khan’ on April 6.

Sci-fi enthusiasts in Austin, Texas, came to watch the classic film, but they were in for a treat when Nimoy introduced the first public showing of director JJ Abrams’ prequel.

After the film was over, the audience gave a six-minute standing ovation.

One filmgoer revealed that fans were “crying they were so happy.”

Paramount arranged for Nimoy, and the film’s writers and producers, to unveil the film to hardcore fans first.

And the audience from the unexpected screening immediately started posting reviews on Twitter.

In the new film, both Zachary Quinto and Nimoy have played Spock, reports the BBC.

‘Star Trek’, the 11th film in the franchise, is due for release on May 8 and had its official world premiere in Sydney, Australia on April 7. (ANI)

India corn 2008/09 export seen at 0.8 mln T

Indian corn exports may reach 800,000 tonnes in the marketing year ending September, higher than expected, helped by a a global supply crunch and rising prices in the US, a trade official said on Friday.

“Exports now look better than previously expected. It can be around 0.7 – 0.8 million tonnes (in the corn marketing year),” Amit Sachdev, India-based representative of the U.S. Grains Council, told Reuters in an interview.

Previous estimates including that of the U.S. Grains Council placed Indian corn exports in 2008/09 between 250,000 tonnes and 400,000 tonnes, as Indian prices were higher.

India began the 2008/09 marketing year in October with a dismal showing, thanks mainly to a 35 percent jump in government intervention prices, which made its offerings uncompetitive.

But, higher prices in the U.S., lower output in Argentina, the world’s No. 2 exporter and a mild weakening of the rupee have made Indian corn a more attractive option, especially in Southeast Asia, where it competes with the U.S. for exports.

“Now US prices have increased… reports says they (US farmers) are planting less …also the weakening of rupee has counted a lot,” Sachdev said. “Exports picked up in small quantities from January and now look even better.”

Indian corn delivery prices in the Southeast Asian destination now stand at about $195-$205 per tonne, at least $10 less than U.S corn, three traders said. Till February Indian prices were higher than its competitor.

U.S. ARGENTINA

Analysts said prices rose in the U.S. due to a higher ethanol mandate by the Obama administration, which in that country is corn-based, lower plantation estimates and a delay in planting due to adverse weather.

U.S government data showed farmers may plant less corn this year due to high costs of fertiliser and other supplies.

Rainy and cold weather in the U.S is also delaying spring corn planting. See

The Indian rupee, which has lost over 3 percent so far in 2009, is also helping boost the dollar-denominated corn trade.

Exports, however, will be much lower than 2007/08 when India sold over 3 million tonnes of the commodity overseas, about 3 percent of the global trade.

Argentina’s worst drought in 40 years is adding to the global supply crunch and price rise, analysts said.

India’s 2008/09 corn output is estimated at 17.04 million tonnes, down 10 percent from previous year, but a bird flu outbreak late last year reduced demand from the poultry industry which consumes about 60 percent of the corn in the country.

Bombardier joins Boeing in cutting 3,000 jobs

Toronto, April 3 (IANS) Canadian plane maker Bombardier, which is the third largest aircraft company in the world, Thursday joined giant Boeing in axing 3,000 jobs worldwide citing sagging demand for its business jets.

Boeing has already announced to lay off 10,000 staff as the global downturn takes toll on the aviation sector.

Surprisingly, job cuts at the Montreal-based Bombardier came the day the company reported higher profits and revenue for the fiscal year 2009. But ‘there is no doubt that we are going through challenging times and our business environment is changing fast,’ said Bombardier CEO Pierre Beaudoin in a statement.

‘However, we believe we are well positioned to face this difficult economic environment with a strong balance sheet, high level of liquidity as well as a large and diversified backlog, both by product and geographies,’ he added.

Thursday’s job cuts, which account for 10 percent of the company’s total workforce, are in addition to 1,360 jobs it eliminated in February after fall in demand for its Learjet and Challenger aircraft, the Bombardier statement said.

Apart from eliminating hundreds of positions in Canada, the latest job cuts will also affect the company’s facilities in the US, Mexico and Northern Ireland, the statement said.

With companies avoiding buying of corporate jets amid the global downturn, Bombardier said it expected to sell 25 percent less business aircraft in the current fiscal year.

In its annual fiscal report Thursday, Bombardier posted a net income of $1 billion for the fiscal year 2009 ending January 31 – up from $317 million during the previous year.

The company earned a total revenue of $19.7 billion in 2009, compared to $17.5 billion in fiscal year 2008.

However, despite its strong financial showing, the company said its sales were slipping, forcing it to scale back its operations and axe jobs.

Akhtar can make a return to Pak team for Oz series

Islamabad, Mar 24 (ANI): Pakistan’s chief selector Abdul Qadir has said that pacer Shoaib Akhtar can return to Pakistan duty if he proves his fitness over the next few days.

He said the selectors have been keeping an eye on Akhtar’s performance to decide whether he can be brought back into the team for the one-dayers against Australia.

Qadir pointed out that Shoaib recently gave a good showing in a one-day game, which he said was a good sign.

Meanwhile, Akhtar said: “For now I am preparing to play against Australia in the ODIs next month and take wickets for my country.”

He also described as a shame for Indian fans that the Indian Premier League will not be played in India.

Akhtar expressed hope that the IPL’s impending move to South Africa or England could pave the way for Pakistani players to return to the lucrative Twenty20 tournament.

In an interview to a cricket website, Shoaib said he and fellow Pakistani cricketers were hopeful of an eleventh-hour call-up to the IPL, now that the tournament seems destined to be shifted out of India.

“For me, it is not over till it’s over. I haven’t given up. It’s up to the franchises. If they call upon my services, I will provide them,” Akhtar said. (ANI)

British bulldog to lose its Churchillian jowl after breeding standards shake-up

London, January 14 (ANI): The classic British bulldog is to lose its Churchillian jowl because of a change in breeding standards effected by the Kennel Club.

The shake-up means that the dog will have a shrunken face, a sunken nose, longer legs, and a leaner body.

The British Bulldog Breed Council is unhappy with the change, and is considering taking legal action against the club.

“What you’ll get is a completely different dog, not a British bulldog,” Time Online quoted Robin Searle, the chairman, as saying.

New breeding standards for 209 dog species have been brought into immediate force, according to the online report.

The decision to effect these changes was following the furore over breeding practices shown on a BBC One documentary, Pedigree Dogs Exposed, last summer.

Those opposed to the shake-up may lodge their objections until the end of June.

Issuing a statement, the Kennel Club has said that it is determined to show its commitment to dog welfare, and has ordered the removal of characteristic features from some dogs.

“The breed standards have been revised so they will not include anything that could in any way be interpreted as encouraging features that might prevent a dog breathing, walking and seeing freely,” the statement said.

The shar pei will lose the familiar folds of skin on the neck, skull and legs.

While the Clumber spaniel and the labrador retriever must stay slim to qualify as top show dogs, flat faces without a muzzle on Pekingese are also no longer acceptable because they cause breathing difficulties.

The bloodhound, German shepherd hound, basset hound, Saint Bernard, chow chow, the Dogue de Bordeaux and mastiff are the other breeds that are to change.

Even judges at licensed dog shows have been asked to comply with the new breed standards while picking the healthiest and best-adjusted champions.

Incestuous breeding of dogs is also to be banned.

Marc Abraham, veterinary adviser to the Kennel Club, said: “The changes will leave breeders and judges in no doubt about their responsibilities to safeguard the health and welfare of dogs, first and foremost.”

Jemima Harrison of Passionate Productions, which made Pedigree Dogs Exposed, welcomed the changes, but said that it would take years to put right all the problems.

Jenny Baker, chairwoman of the Shar Pei Society of Great Britain, also supported the changes. “We have never encouraged breeding of loose skin on the neck, legs or skull.”

Country’s leading zoologists and animal behaviour expert Sir Patrick Bateson, who is the president of the Zoological Society of London, has announced that he would be heading an independent inquiry into dog breeding techniques.

He will also review the registration and showing of dogs, and hopes to complete his report by the autumn. (ANI)

Auto Credit May Bring Some Hope To The Wilting Auto Industry

Auto Credit May Brings Some Hope To The Wilting Auto IndustryLast month federal government announced, in its budget, the formation of the Canadian Secured Credit Facility under which Ottawa will purchase up to $12 billion in securities from financial institutions including banks.

The securities would be supported by loans and leases on vehicles and equipment. This would enable the automakers to offer financing to more consumers and dealers.

This news comes as the much needed relief to the automobile industry scorched by recession. But they seem to be getting much too impatient to wait till June.

“We need it today,” Bigland, chief executive officer of Chrysler Canada Inc., said in an interview at the Canadian International Auto Show. “It’s critical oxygen that the patient needs.”

“We can’t wait six months,” he said.

North America has witnessed a major slowdown on automobile sales due to the rising fuel prices, a subsequent global financial crisis that brought the credit markets to a standstill and wilting consumer confidence.

Bigland observed that in a normal economic climate, about 5 per cent of customers can’t get credit to buy vehicles, but Chrysler dealers across the country have given proof showing that level has shot up to 20 to 25 per cent in the past four months.

“It’s the number one issue affecting our business and it’s getting worse,” he said.

India drops to third in ODI rankings

Dubai, Feb.9 (ANI): India has slipped back to third in the Reliance Mobile ICC ODI Championship table following defeat in the fifth and final match of its away series against Sri Lanka.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s team had moved ahead of Australia and to within four ratings points of leader South Africa when it went 4-0 up in the series but a combination of Sri Lanka’s strong showing in the final ODI and Australia beating New Zealand in the third ODI of its ongoing five-match series has meant they have returned to third position.

That means that if India wins its series against New Zealand 5-0 it will move to 124 ratings points, which is not enough to overtake South Africa at the top.

In fact, by the current fixture schedule, only New Zealand can topple Graeme Smith and friends by the cut-off date of 1 April. But to do that the Black Caps need to win all seven of the remaining ODIs they will play before then, an ICC press release said.

The side that leads the listing on 1 April will be USD 175,000 richer while the runner-up will collect USD 75,000. The ongoing series in Australia and the upcoming one between New Zealand and India look set to determine where those pay-outs will end up.

At this stage, the best Australia and India can do is come second in the table. Even if Ricky Ponting’s team wins the remaining two matches against Daniel Vettori’s men it will stay behind South Africa by a fraction of a ratings point.(ANI)

Intikhab warns team against complacency in Sri Lanka Test series

Karachi, Feb.7 (ANI): Pakistan’s cricket coach Intikhab Alam has warned his players against any complacency during the forthcoming Test series with Sri Lanka, that might creep- up due to the islander team’s drubbing by India in the on-going ODI series.

Alam said that Test matches are different from one day games, and Sri Lanka was capable of turning it around with several world-class players in their squad.

“Test cricket is a different ball game altogether. You can’t predict the performance of a side in Test matches on the basis of its one-day showing, at least not Sri Lanka,” The News quoted Alam, as saying.

He added that though India has defeated Sri Lanka in all the four games quite comprehensively, the Lankan’s would be a different side altogether in the longer version of the game with the return of veteran left-arm fast bowler Chaminda Vaas.

“Sri Lanka has two of the best spinners in the world, Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis, and with Vaas returning, their bowling attack will be very strong,” Alam said.

Referring to Pakistan’s lack of playing Test cricket, he asked the players to shift their game plan from the fifty over match to the five day game.

“Our first target would be to switch off the one-day mode and get into the Test mode,” Alam said.

Commenting on new skipperYounis Khan, Alam hoped that the team will perform cohesively under the new leader.

“Younis is a new captain and it would be good that he spends time with his players before the Tests. We would need a team effort to win the series and I’m confident that boys will gel behind Younis,” he added. (ANI)

Hong Kong sex photos scandal pop star to testify in Canadian court

Hong Kong – The Hong Kong pop star at the centre of a sex photos scandal is to testify against the man accused of downloading pictures from his computer in Canada, a news report said Wednesday.

Edison Chen, 28, has refused to return to Hong Kong for court proceedings surrounding the pictures showing him with a string of naked young starlets that circulated on the internet early last year.

A deal has now been reached for Chen to give evidence instead at a five-day hearing in the Supreme Court of British Columbia on February 23, the South China Morning Post reported.

The case caused an international sensation and the pictures, allegedly stolen from Chen’s laptop when he took it in for repairs, were viewed by millions of fans in Hong Kong, China and Taiwan.

Chen’s refusal to return to Hong Kong has stalled the trial of computer technician Sze Ho-chun, 23, accused of distributing the photos of Chen performing sex acts with well-known starlets.

Sze, who will not appear at the hearing in Canada, has pleaded not guilty to three counts of obtaining access to a computer with a view to making a dishonest gain.

He will go on trial in Hong Kong in April, the newspaper reported, and Chen’s testimony from the Canadian court hearing will be presented as part of the prosecution case.

Chen, who was forced to apologize to the starlets and announce his retirement from showbiz, was named one of Hong Kong’s People of 2008 in a radio poll last week. (dpa)

Will Smith’s wife helped him overcome sex scene fears

Washington, Jan 9 (ANI): Unlike many women, Jada Pinkett-Smith actually encouraged her actor husband Will to shed all fears and get as hot and heavy as possible in his love scene for film ‘Seven Pounds’.

She did so because she wanted to protect her own reputation.

The ‘I Am Legend’ actor could be seen doing a racy romp with stunning Rosario Dawson in the film.

“Jada said, ”Listen, make sure you don”t embarrass me.” She said women forever are going to be looking at this love scene and they”re going to decide whether you can go or not. So don”t be holding back, don”t embarrass me,” Fox News quoted Will Smith as telling how his wife encouraged him for the sexy scene.

The lovemaking sequence is just the second sex scene Smith has done in his entire acting career, after showing off his bedroom antics with Pinkett herself in ‘Ali’.

And thus, Smith was a bunch of nerves before going all the way to do a racy scene with Dawson.

“Will wouldn”t start kissing for weeks,” Dawson revealed to the L.A Times.

She added: “It would be on the schedule, we”d have lights and everything set up, and he would end up being like, ”I”m not feeling it tonight. I don”t think it”s going to happen. Let”s wait another week.” I was checking my breath, smelling myself, trying to see: ”Am I offending the man in some way?”” (ANI)
