Modi to showcase Gujarat in China

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi may not be welcome in the US, but China is ready to roll out the red carpet for him as he gears up to visit the world’s fastest growing economy and Asian powerhouse next month.

Modi is likely to visit China Nov 8, reliable sources told IANS. The visit has been cleared by the external affairs ministry.

Modi is expected to make a pitch for greater Chinese investment in Gujarat and showcase his state as a hub for foreign investment. In particular, Modi is likely to discuss the prospects of Huawei, China’s biggest telecom company which has a considerable presence in India, investing in Gujarat.

China has been impressed by the economic transformation of Gujarat in the last decade and the massive foreign investment it has attracted in different sectors. When China’s Vice Minister Ai Ping visited Gujarat last week, he had lauded Gujaratis’ contribution to business development in different countries, including China. He had also extended an invitation to Modi to visit China.

Modi is expected to seek Chinese assistance to develop a “Gautam Buddha circuit”, that includes constructing a temple where Buddha’s relics would be preserved, to attract tourists to the state.

Modi’s visit will take place soon after Nur Bekri, chairman of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China, visits New Delhi and Mumbai next week to explore investment opportunities.

The visit by regional leaders has become a trend of sorts lately, with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar going to China in June. Kumar’s visit was focused on cooperation in the field of infrastructure, agriculture and rural development.

Despite differences over a host of issues, economic ties between India and China have been showing a steady upswing.

The two countries recently held their maiden strategic economic dialogue to exchange their experiences in macro-economic management and to address issues like the growing trade imbalance in favour of Beijing.

Bilateral trade is already touching $60 billion, with both sides confident of scaling it up to $100 billion.

Ghost exhibition organised in Bhopal

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), May 8 (ANI): The Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sanghralaya in Madhya Pradesh”s Bhopal city organised an exhibition on wooden idols of ghosts for the first time.

The idols included animals also.

“I found this exhibition quite exciting as I came to know that in States like Tamil Nadu, ghosts are worshipped. I belong to Uttar Pradesh and nothing like this happens there,” said Gaurav Saxena, a visitor.

“Such artistic forms of idols are being worshipped in southern India. People there worship more than 400 forms of ghosts. This is a unique thing in itself,” he added.

The curator of the museum feels that such an exhibition will not spread superstition, as the ghosts shown are actually gods and goddesses disguised.

“This is a ghost exhibition but one should not consider it to be fearful. Our motive was to showcase the aspect of religious faith attached to it,” said Ashok Tiwari, the curator of the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sanghralaya (IGRMS).

“The effort is to show that these ghosts are the forms of Gods and Goddesses in disguise,” he added. (ANI)

The Royal will offer up a heart-rending look at his work on climate change in Harmony, a feature-length program to be broadcast during NBC”s Green Week this November, reports News.com.au.

“I can only somehow imagine that I find myself being born into this position for a purpose,” he said.

“We have lost something very precious and that is an understanding of an inter-connectedness with nature. Just as mankind has the power to push the world to the brink, so too does he have the power to restore it,” he added. (ANI)

Interpretive centre to showcase wetlands

The cultural and environmental values of the Barren Box wetland are set to go on display in a new education centre.

Long-term works are continuing to rehabilitate the 1,500 hectare swamp north-west of Griffith.

“We will continue this year with further direct seeding, another 300 or 400 hectares of direct seeding and also putting in facilities out there, some education facilities,” he said.

“So we’ll have an interpretive centre and we’ll also again be dealing with the local Indigenous community about the cultural values of Barren Box and how we can incorporate that into a cultural awareness centre.

“The interpretive centre will really be explaining the history and story of Barren Box. It’ll be used for education purposes. Not only that, we’ll also be putting bird hides out there so local bird groups and other interest groups can go out there and watch the birds”

Indigenous art exhibition heads to China

An exhibition of Indigenous art from the Papunya region in central Australia will go on show in China later this year.

The works from the National Museum of Australia showcase the movement that kick-started the commercialisation of Indigenous art in the 1970s.

The Papunya movement is known for its signature-style dot paintings on large canvases in palettes of red, yellow, black and white.

The artists transformed their Dreamtime stories onto the vast canvases and boards that were provided to them through a government arts program.

By the late 1970s they had established the Papunya Tula Artists Company and the style they have now become renowned for.

Papunya Painting: Out Of The Australian Desert will be on show at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing from June until August.

Malaysian insurance companies offer sex, parties to potential customers

Kuala Lumpur, Mar 22 (ANI): It has emerged that some companies in Johor, Malaysia, are recruiting female agents to have sex with potential customers.

According to the Guang Ming Daily, the companies also arrange for the agents to party with the would-be clients at nightclubs and karaoke outlets.

Sources revealed that the female agents were recruited from among divorcees, single mothers or those helping their boyfriends repay debts.

“These are women who will do anything for money,” the Star Online quoted the sources as saying.

The agents would go after middle-aged small entrepreneurs who were not very highly educated, and if they failed to meet their targets they were punished by having to “showcase” themselves in adult diapers or lingerie.

They were also forced to pay fines of between RM1,000 and RM3,000 to their company. (ANI)

Conference to showcase sugarcane innovation

A group of sugar industry researchers say a conference in Bundaberg will give local growers greater access to new technology.

The Australian Society of Sugar Cane Technologists’ conference will bring about 350 industry experts to the city in May.

Society president Dr Mike Cox says it is an opportunity for growers to investigate the latest innovations.

“I think industry people really benefit because while the research is very important, the adoption of the research and understanding by the industry of what the research is about is a very important part of it,” he said.

Dr Cox says ongoing research helps keep the industry going.

“I think there are many examples where the sugar industry probably wouldn’t exist without some of the research,” he said.

“Research basically keeps it viable, keeps it competitive on the world scene, looks for innovations and things that really secure that industry for the future.”

Ferry launched despite resort uncertainty

A Capricorn Coast tourist operator has launched a new ferry, despite the undecided future of Great Keppel Island’s resort.

The 29-metre catamaran Freedom Monarch has been launched at Rosslyn Bay Harbour. The 350-seat ferry will operate trips to Great Keppel Island, as well as day cruises.

Max Allen from Freedom Fast Cats says he is still hopeful that plans for a new resort at Great Keppel Island will be announced soon.

But he says that is not crucial to the success of his operation.

“The resort would obviously make success go [more] rapidly than it is, but with our company, the way we’ve been operating, it has been increasing our day cruises all the time,” he said.

“Great Keppel Island will be the icing on the cake if we can get it, it will just improve the whole coast.”

Capricorn Tourism believes new developments such as a larger ferry will help attract more visitors to the region.

Chief executive Mary Carroll says she hopes an announcement will be made soon for revised plans for a new resort on Great Keppel Island, and that will help to showcase the Capricorn Coast’s natural attractions.

“Oh look I’ve always said that the reefs off the Capricorn Coast is even better than a lot of the reef in other parts of the state,” she said.

“It’s just the fact that we haven’t had the volume of resorts like other areas such as the Whitsundays have got to put the money into marketing our natural attributes.”

Indian students compiling DVD to showcase Australia as safe place

MELBOURNE: Concerned over the portrayal of Australia as “racist” in the wake of a series of attacks on Indians, a group of students from the community have decided to compile a DVD showcasing their host nation as a safe place.

Postgraduate students, whose stay has by and large been positive and free of such safety concerns here, have taken the unusual step of making their own DVD to be distributed in India.

The DVD is being made with an aim to reassure people back home that Victorian state of Australia, which has witnessed most of recent attacks on Indian students, is a safe place.

It will have five Indian students talking about their good and safe stay in Melbourne and about their enthusiasm for Australia, ABC channel reported.

These students believe that the portrayal of Australia as racist is “incorrect.”

The idea to bring out a DVD was initiated by doctoral student Subatra Mukherjee, a resident of Geelong.

Mukherjee has been living in Australia for the last two years with his wife and said he never faced any safety issues.

“So when I came here I was really apprehensive about how the place will be and whether we’ll be accepted there or not. But after coming here, truly speaking, it’s the Australian people who made me comfortable and they accepted me, accepted us nicely. So, yeah, it’s a pleasant experience for me,” he said.

The former Republican Vice-Presidential candidate is believed to have been in talks with a number of US networks for a show, which would follow Palin, her husband and their five children.

However, there are reports that refer to the proposed programme as a “docudrama” that would showcase Palin”s home state of Alaska.

One television executive described the show as “”Planet Earth” meets Alaska meets her family,” reports the Telegraph.

It is said that Palin has joined hands with Mark Burnett, the British producer behind shows including ”The Apprentice” and ”Survivor”.

Meet Prince Charles and Camilla, the ‘wedding planners’!

London, Sept 20 (ANI): Prince Charles and wife Camilla are turning wedding planners and “loaning out” their country retreat of Highgrove House to wannabe brides and grooms.

And included in the package will be the royal couple’s shared “expertise”.

Like Charles and Camilla did at their Windsor wedding four years ago, couples will be encouraged to “keep it simple”, say reports.

As per rumours, the first pair to enjoy a “Charles and Camilla wedding” are TV babe Jenni Falconer and her actor fiancé James Midgley, reports The Daily Star.

A royal source said: “Obviously with it being their house they would want control of the event. But they also recognise what a great opportunity it would be to showcase their home.

“Highgrove is an absolutely fantastic building and would make a wonderful venue for a wedding and reception.”

The nine-bedroom country house on a 37-acre estate near Tetbury, Gloucestershire, was bought for Charles in 1980.

A source said: “Charles is hugely proud of Highgrove. It’s a wonderful property and he has spent thousands of pounds on the gardens and grounds. I’m sure by holding weddings there Charles would take great pleasure being the host.

“And he could use them to promote the Duchy Originals organic products he’s involved with.” (ANI)
