47″ and 42″ Models Optimized for Bright Venues
LAS VEGAS–(Business Wire)–
Panasonic Solutions Company, provider of collaboration, information-sharing and
decision-support solutions for government and commercial enterprises, today
announced two new LF20 Series Full-HD LCD displays, the TH-47LF20U and
TH-42LF20U, the company`s first professional LCD models for general-purpose
signage, at InfoComm 2010. Distinguished by high brightness, slim design, light
weight and a wide range of professional features, the new displays will deliver
powerful performance in such demanding signage venues as shopping malls, public
transportation and other commercial facilities.

With a full 1920 x 1080-pixel In-Plane Switching (IPS) panel, the new 47″ and
42″ LCD displays feature an expanded color gamut to ensure vivid, true-to-life
color. The LF20 Series displays have a high level of brightness that accurately
conveys information even in extremely bright, open spaces (brightness is
measured at 700 cd/m2, with wide 178° horizontal/vertical viewing angles).

These new large-screen displays are thin and lightweight, with built-in rear
speakers and a stylish black cabinet that blends in with any type of facility.
The LF20 Series are the lightest in the industry, with the TH-42LF20U weighing
in at only 39 pounds. Both displays have a depth of less than 4″, and a narrow
0.7″ bezel.

Ruggedly designed for professional implementations, the TH-47LF20U/TH-42LF20U
offer a choice of vertical or horizontal use. Multiple displays (2×2, 3×3, 4×4,
5×5) can be used to create a near seamless video wall or tiling effect due to
the narrow bezel. A fan-less design minimizes noise and dust, and
tamper-resistant functions, such as a Control Button Lock, facilitate use in
open spaces. The displays are VESA-mount compatible for more flexible
installations, with a pedestal mount available as an option.

The displays features a full range of professional level inputs including Video,
S-Video, DVI-D, two HDMI, component, PC, three audio as well as standard
RS-232C. The TH-47LF20U/TH-42LF20U will be available in July at suggested list
prices of $1,860 and $1,430, respectively.

S.Africa’s Zuma warns of human trafficking risk

Parents must be vigilant during the soccer World Cup to guard against a possible jump in child trafficking, South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma said on Friday.

In a speech launching a new child protection law, Zuma said that hosting an event of such magnitude could be seen as an opportunity for criminals, particularly during an extended school holiday.

South African schools will be closed for the month-long Cup, which starts on June 11.

“Not all parents and care-givers will be able to align their vacation with that of the extended school vacation. We urge parents to take extra care and ensure that their children are supervised and provided with guidance at all times,” he said.

“Children wandering alone in shopping malls and football stadiums will be vulnerable to people with evil intentions.”

The United Nations says trafficking generates billions of dollars annually, with 79 percent of those affected falling victim to sexual exploitation. An estimated 6,000 to 8,000 people are trafficked a year, half of them children.

South Africa fast-tracked a new law against human trafficking to bring it into effect before the World Cup, making it easier to prosecute suspects and giving South African courts jurisdiction over acts outside the country’s borders.

Those found guilty could now face life imprisonment or a heavy fine.

SECURITY BUDGET

Trafficking has not traditionally been a major issue in South Africa but activists say the problem is growing and child groups have warned of an increase in incidents during the tournament, when some 350,000 foreigners are expected to travel to the country.

Zuma said human trafficking had been prioritised within the justice system and that dedicated police co-ordinators and task teams had been set up.

“We will play our part as government but parents and care-givers also have to be vigilant,” he said.

South Africa’s government has vowed to keep fans safe during the World Cup, setting aside an additional 1.3 billion rand ($164.2 million) for security.

The country has some of the highest violent crime levels in the world, with more than 18,000 people murdered in the 12 months to March 2009 — around 50 a day and more than the United States which has six times the population.

Local news agency SAPA reported that Zuma had appealed to South Africans to “be good” for the month of the tournament.

“In this time, we need good South Africans. Let them, just for four weeks, be good. Just for four weeks,” he said at a prayer meeting on Thursday.

Thai plan to choke Red Shirts put on hold

The Thai government suspended its plan to cut water and electricity supplies to anti-government demonstrators camped in a posh central Bangkok neighborhood, heeding pleas from residents and foreign diplomats who live and work there.

But it also withdrew its offer to hold elections in November, bringing Thailand’s months-old political crisis back to square one, days after it appeared that a compromise was imminent.

The ‘Red Shirt’ protesters believe Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva’s coalition government came to power illegitimately through manipulation of the courts and the backing of the powerful military, and have been demanding new elections in street rallies since March 12. Clashes with security forces and other violence have left at least 29 people dead and 1,400 injured.

A government blockade of the Red Shirts’ barricaded protest zone in central Bangkok was supposed to start yesterday at midnight, but water and electricity were available as usual Thursday morning in the upscale Rajprasong area.

Thousands of Red Shirts protesters are camped on the streets and parks in that area, which is home to several embassies, shopping malls, hospitals and upmarket apartments.

Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd, the spokesman of an agency in charge of suppressing the protest, said late yesterday that the plan to choke off essential services to the ‘Red Shirt’ demonstrators was put on hold because of the repercussions it would have on other residents.

He said European diplomats and others expressed concern to the Bangkok governor that the blockade would effect residents more than the protesters.

“We have to assess who is going to face the impact more: the protesters or people living in the area,” said.

Sansern, said security forces would “not use force at this stage,” but left open the possibility of more violence if the protesters refuse to disperse.

With the government’s tougher tone, chances of a negotiated settlement appeared almost doomed, just days after the two sides had agreed in principle to a reconciliation plan.

Thai “red shirts” gather after botched arrests

Thousands of Thai anti-government protesters gathered at a central Bangkok site on Friday after police botched an attempt to arrest three of their leaders as the authorities vowed to crack down on “terrorists”.

One protest leader slid down a rope from a hotel balcony to escape riot police, while others were rescued by hundreds of “red shirts”, who heavily outnumbered security forces at a Bangkok hotel owned by the family of former premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

The three leaders later joined around 10,000 of their supporters at a shopping centre in the middle of the city, now the main site of month-long protests in the Thai capital.

“If they use force to disperse us, we will flatten the entire neighbourhood,” said Jatuporn Prompan, a protest leader who was not among the three escapees, on a red shirt stage at the intersection of posh shopping malls and luxury hotels.

For a graphic: http://link.reuters.com/rap67j

The government, which had previously said it would not directly confront the protesters, also stepped up the rhetoric, although there were no troops on the streets of Bangkok.

“We will arrest and suppress the terrorists. We have set up special task forces hunting for the terrorists,” Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said.

The move against leaders of the red shirts on Friday follows a failed attempt by troops to eject protesters from one of their encampments in the city last weekend. At least 24 people were killed and more than 800 injured in Thailand’s worst political violence since 1992.

STOCKS FALL

The risk of further instability in Thailand sent stocks down 2.1 percent and the the market has now lost almost all its gains this year.

Thailand’s five-year credit default swaps (CDS) , often used as a measure of political risk, were trading at 110/115.57 against 105/111 bps on Monday, the last trading day prior to a three-day holiday.

The “red shirts” back Thaksin, who was ousted in a 2006 coup, and want Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to step down immediately and call early elections, which he has refused to do.

Abhisit had been due to hold his first news conference in four days at 1 p.m. local time (0300GMT) but it was delayed, although no reason was given.

Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij told Reuters on Thursday Abhisit would not resign as it would “be very negative for the country”.

Protesters called off plans to march on television stations that they accused of biased coverage, removing one potential flashpoint with security forces. They hunkered down at their base in a central Bangkok shopping district, which they vowed to make a “final battleground” with the security forces.

The government has also said it would crack down on people it believed to be financing the red shirts and issued summonses under emergency powers for 60 people to report to a military barracks, where Abhisit has set up emergency headquarters.

The violent protests have hit Thai tourism, with occupancy rates less than a third of normal levels in Bangkok, according to a tour operator body.

According to a report from investment bank Morgan Stanley, losses to tourism, which accounts for 6 percent of gross domestic product, could clip 0.2 percentage point from economic growth this year.

The government believes Thailand’s economy could grow 4.5 percent this year, although Korn warned that forecast could prove optimistic.

UPDATE 3-Aeon sees profit growth but flat sales in 2010/11

TOKYO, April 14 (Reuters) – Aeon Co Ltd (8267.T), Japan’s No.2 retailer, forecast a double-digit percentage rise in operating profit on flat sales this financial year as it cuts costs to secure profit growth in the face of weak consumer spending.

The company, which runs about 600 general merchandising stores and 1,200 supermarkets in Japan and other Asian markets, has suffered along with rivals from a slump in personal consumption and fierce price competition amid prolonged deflation.

While Japanese retailers like industry leader Seven & I (3382.T) say the worst might be over for the sector, they have yet to see signs of a solid recovery as wages and job market conditions remain weak. [ID:nTOE63705Y]

“Generally, I don’t think there will be a strong recovery in (our) main businesses,” Aeon President Motoya Okada said at an earnings briefing.

“I don’t expect sales will change much for supermarkets and others but don’t think they will get worse, either.”

The company said its core unit’s same-store sales, a key gauge of a retailer’s business, are likely to fall 1.3 percent in the current financial year, after declining 5.3 percent the previous year.

Okada said the company will shift its growth focus to overseas from Japan and to smaller stores from shopping malls.

For the year to next February, Aeon forecast an operating profit of 145-155 billion yen ($1.55-$1.66 billion), up 11-19 percent from a year earlier and above a mean estimate of 135.6 billion yen in a poll of 14 analysts by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The firm said revenue is likely to be over 5.06 trillion yen, virtually flat from the year just ended.

With Japan mired in deflation, Aeon has been slashing costs to protect its profit margins with efforts focused on revamping the cost structure of its main general merchandising stores, which sell everything from clothing to groceries.

Aeon said its operating profit came to 130.2 billion yen ($1.4 billion) for the year ended in February, up from 124.4 billion yen the previous year, while revenue fell 3.4 percent to 5.05 trillion yen.

The result was in line with the revised estimate the firm announced last week.

Shares of Aeon have gained 41 percent in the last 12 months, outperforming a 24 percent increase in the benchmark Nikkei average .N225.

Aeon ended up 1.4 percent at 1,087 on Wednesday, against a 0.4 percent gain in the Nikkei. ($1=93.59 Yen) (Reporting by Taiga Uranaka; Editing by Chris Gallagher)

Political protests hurt Thai consumer confidence

(Reuters) – Consumer confidence in Thailand fell in March, depressed by political unrest that could seriously damage the economy if it turns violent, and further weakness is likely in April, according to a university survey on Thursday.

World

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce said its consumer confidence index fell to 69.8 in March, the lowest since November, from 70.9 in February and a 21-month high of 71.9 in January.

Confidence had been rising since the middle of 2009 thanks to a recovery in the economy after a brief recession, but the latest flare-up in a five-year political crisis has dealt it a blow.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva declared a state of emergency on Wednesday to control a four-week rally by supporters of ousted former premier Thaksin Shinawatra aimed at forcing early elections.

“Clearly the confidence index is likely to fall sharply in April as the political protest drags on. The economy will be affected if it turns violent,” university economist Thanavat Polvichai told a news conference.

“The protest has hurt tourism and spending and more damage is expected if it continues,” Thanavat said.

Confidence hit its lowest in over seven years in May last year, a month after the same “red shirt” protest movement sparked the country’s worst street violence in 17 years.

The protesters have occupied since Saturday a Bangkok district full of upmarket shopping malls and five-star hotels, such as the Grand Hyatt, operated by Erawan Group.

That has hurt the retail, restaurant and tourist sectors and persuaded some foreign visitors to stay away.

The tourist industry accounts for about 6 percent of the $264 billion economy, Southeast Asia’s second-largest, and directly employs 1.8 million people.

The economy grew 3.6 percent in the final quarter of 2009 from the previous quarter, its highest growth rate in 10 years.

Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij told Reuters on Wednesday the protests might cause growth this year to be “significantly” worse than the ministry’s 4.5 percent forecast. [ID:nSGE636016].

The World Bank forecast on Wednesday that Thailand’s economy would grow 6.2 percent this year [ID:nSGN002342]. Private economists have forecast growth of 4-5 percent after a contraction of 2.3 percent in 2009.

Despite the political problems, consumer spending in some areas is still good: there were record orders for 27,878 cars at the two-week Bangkok Motor Show that ended this week.

Philippines says Mindanao will have power for vote

The Philippines will ask malls and industries on southern Mindanao island to operate on reduced power for three days around next month’s national polls to ensure a successful vote, officials said on Wednesday.

A drought caused by the El Nino weather phenomenon has dried up dams in Mindanao, cutting hydropower output on the island and resulting in blackouts of as much as eight hours daily.

This has raised fears power problems may hamper the country’s first automated vote on May 10 and lead to a disputed outcome, a particular concern in Mindanao where 57 people were killed last November in the country’s worst incident of election violence.

Stable power supply is key for smooth elections, during which 80,000 vote counting machines are due to calculate results for local positions within two hours of the close of voting and about 48 hours for the national contest.

The island, which has a power supply shortfall of about 400-500 megawatts, makes up nearly a quarter of the country’s total voting population of around 50.7 million.

“We want to make sure that all the election sites, places will have power to conduct the elections peacefully and correctly,” Jose Ibazeta, acting energy secretary, told reporters.

He said industry, factories and shopping malls, would be asked to cut operations so they would use less power.

“At this point, we are very confident that on the period of three days, (May) 9, 10 and 11, we will have power in Mindanao,” Ibazeta said.

He said the government would also use generators owned by big sugar millers and other industries in Mindanao to deliver power to key voting and ballot-counting areas.

Not happy Glenn – retailers rage against rate rise

Australia’s small retailers are so furious with the Reserve Bank governor’s decision to raise interest rates that they are calling for him to resign.

The Retail Group, which says it speaks for thousands of small shop owners, says Glenn Stevens is failing to deal with the mining boom’s generation of a two speed economy in Australia.

Glenn Stevens may think he is Sydney’s most boring person but his decisions generate the sort of excitement that most people would prefer to do without.

Yesterday’s decision to lift the cash rate by 25 basis points was almost instantly followed up by the big four banks. And Tony Standley from The Retail Group says Glenn Stevens knows that would put crippling pressure on small retailers.

“The speed at which the banks passed on the yesterday’s round was to say it was done… as if their fingers were poised over the button,” he said.

“The average business person, the average consumer, that day to day activity in business, that is being ignored.

“We believe there should be enough commonsense within the RBA board to understand that. That is the reason why we have questioned Glenn Stevens’ judgement.”

The Retail Group represent small retail outlets like those found in big shopping malls. It says the rate rises are hurting them from both sides. It is costing more to get money from the bank, and fewer people are walking into their stores.

“We have to question whether in fact the RBA really looked at those inputs, which make up their decision,” Mr Standley said.

“If you look at say some of the costs which the average consumer, you and me, are [sic] experiencing right now, with state increases on electricity rates, they should be part of the RBA’s decision making and be discounted.”

Mr Standley says a two speed economy has reemerged, with the mining sector doing well, and most other consumer related sector’s being punished for its success.

He says the RBA is making its decisions with too much regard for the strength of the mining sector, and not enough concern for the welfare of small retailers.

“Our view is the RBA mandate, which is in fact set by the Parliament as to what its role is, really does need to be questioned,” he added.

Retailers are not the only ones hurting. A new survey of the Services Sector, which includes professional vocations such as lawyers and accountants, shows consumers becoming more cautious about their spending.

The Australian Industry Group’s chief executive, Heather Ridout, says five rate rises since October have taken a toll.

“Five of the 12 sectors are still going backwards. You would have to say the lacklustre nature of employment shows how cautious employers are being,” she said.

“But, clearly, the worst is behind the industry and we’re hopeful that the consumer related sectors will start to pick up because we’re seeing quite strong growth in anything related to construction or resources.”

However, according to economists, the pressure on business is going to get worse.

Crude oil prices hit an 18-month high overnight to $US87 a barrel.

Savanth Sebastian, an economist with the Commonwealth Bank, says petrol prices will surge in the coming weeks.

“The national average petrol price is now holding at an 18-month high. Importantly, I think it’s likely that there’s more bad news for motorists around the corner,” he said.

“The Singapore unleaded price, which we derive our petrol from, has tracked significantly higher in the past week. In fact, it’s at an 18 month high. It’s up around 5 to 6 per cent, and that certainly needs to flow through to the pump prices,” he said.

“So we expect that petrol prices will probably rise by about two to three cents a litre over the next fortnight, and the risks are certainly to the upside given that the higher Australian dollar is helping subdue some of that strength in pump petrol prices at the moment.”

Brand consciousness grips Punjab

Amritsar, Sept 4(ANI): Growing awareness and rising incomes have brought about greater brand consciousness in Punjab, as people of all ages are now willing to pay extra for the brand mania, which has taken the State in its grip.

Many people identify branded clothes with better social status and believe that there is no harm in spending on them.

“Branded clothes have become status symbols and the person who doesn’t wear branded clothes, doesn’t attract girls but everyone appreciates people who wear branded clothes. The people who wear simple clothes are looked down upon. It doesn’t look nice but this is fashion these days,” said Richa Aneja, a young college students.

Mahima, a customer, believes that Bollywood brings in another angle to brands. She says that just the fact that stars endorse them and wear them gives a sort of encouragement to buy these stuff.

“Brands like Ed-Hardy, they are worn by stars like Saif Ali khan and Kareena Kapoor, so one feels better that I am wearing a brand which was worn by Kareena Kapoor. Well students like me, we save our pocket money. Even if we buy one jean, we carried off for two years but you are wearing a Levis or Ed-Hardy jean, so that is like a status symbol. One feels good that yes I am wearing an Ed-Hardy jeans. Even if you have to spend few more pennies, its okay,” said Mahima.

The notion of ‘brand consciousness’ is also being cashed upon by uptown shopping malls and numerous international brands, as the craze in simply unbeatable.

While, store owners and managers link all the craze with the hype that has been created around brands, and say that everyone knows about brands, so they want to own it as it has styling, fitting and is affordable.

“Branded obviously, the styling and fitting is there and let’s say media, the awareness about the brands. Earlier nobody used to know Lee, Levis or Ed-Hardy or Benetton but now everybody, every single person, even the kids they know about the brands, so that’s the brand awareness which has come and plus they are almost affordable,” said Sachin, Senior Sales Manager of No Exit store. Bangalore bonds at first wine festival

Bangalore, July 10 (IANS) It was the perfect setting – the salubrious locales of Lalbagh Botanical Garden, accompanied by pleasant weather – the city could not have asked for more to kick-start its first wine festival Friday.
Connoisseurs got a chance to sample white, red and rose wines brewed in the state at the inaugural day of the three-day colourful fiesta, conceptualised by the Karnataka Wine Board on the lines of popular wine festivals in vogue in developed countries.

The festival was inaugurated by Horticulture Minister Umesh V. Katti and legislator D. Hemachandra Sagar.

“Wine is a healthy drink, if enjoyed in a moderate manner. Wine has very little alcohol percentage. It leaves drinkers with no hangover,” said L. Shantakumari Sunder, development commissioner and chairperson of the wine board.

Along with free tasting of wine, a seminar was part of the first day of the festival to educate farmers, industrialists and public about wine cultivation, production and contract farming.

Opportunities available in the state were also highlighted at the fiesta.

Wine lovers thronged the stalls of various wineries.

“We’re getting good response from the crowds. Visitors are very adventurous and want to taste different kinds of wines,” said Sunil Doshi, manning the stall of Kinvah, a winery based in Nandi Valley.

Added Jayakumar, senior marketing executive at Naka winery in Bangalore: “The festival is an eye-opener for wine makers, fruit cultivators and wine lovers.”

The visitors were clearly an excited lot.

“I accidentally bumped into the festival. But it’s a pleasant surprise and I am enjoying every glass of wine,” said Sussane D’Souza, a tourist from California.

IT professional Bittu Nair found it “simply fabulous”.

“It’s beyond my imagination to see large number of people getting an opportunity to enjoy wine under the sky,” Nair said.

Karnataka has 600 acres under grape cultivation, with Nandi Valley in Chikkaballapur and Krishna Valley in Bijapur with the highest cultivation.

The state also produces approximately 18 lakh litres of wine annually, second only to Maharashtra’s one crore litres. In 2008-09, Karnataka exported around three lakh litres to the rest of the country and abroad.

The government recently amended the Karnataka Excise (Lease of Rights to Retail Vend of Wine) Rules, 2008, to facilitate setting up of wine boutiques.

Shopping malls, super markets and multiplexes with not less than 15,000 square feet floor area will be allowed to have wine boutiques.

Industrialists, traders gift flowers to politicians in the hope of getting electricity

Ludhiana, June27 (ANI): Industrialists and traders of Punjab have adopted a novel method to convince state politicians to provide them with adequate electricity-flowers.

Recently flowers were given to state Tourism Minister Hira Singh Gabria in protest against the state government’s failure to provide adequate power to the industries.

The All Trade and Industry Forum is protesting against an order of the Punjab State Electricity Board to a section of industries to observe power cut from June 25 to July 2.The forum is demanding equal distribution, and equal cut of power to industries, shopping malls and other commercial centres in the state.

The forum’s convenor Narinder Bhambra, said it was decided to send flowers to all the state assembly members and Punjab State Electricity Board officials till they find a solution to the power problem.

Presently, Punjab produces 1,52,600,000 units of power as against the required 1,96,000,000 units.

However, industrialists feel that by rationalizing power cuts on other sectors, the increased demand can be compensated.

Gabria said Punjab has entered into an agreement with Andhra Pradesh to get 350 megawatts of electricity, from July. (ANI)

Almost 19,000 People fined under anti-smoking at Indian law

New Delhi, May 25 (IANS) As many as 18,925 people were fined for violating the anti-smoking law in the past six months, the health ministry said here Monday.

Of the 18,925 people fined, Tamil Nadu topped the list as the highest number of challans were issued in the state. At least 9,648 people were fined in Tamil Nadu followed by Delhi where the authorities booked 3,671 people, a statement said.

The authorities collected over Rs.2.5 million as fine from the violators after Oct 2 last year when the anti-smoking law was implemented. The law prohibits smoking at public places.

Violation of the ban, imposed under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003, attracts a fine of up to Rs.200.

Smoking has been prohibited at all places to which the public has access, including auditoriums, health institutions, government buildings, restaurants, courts, public conveyances, public transport, stadiums, railway stations, bus stops, workplaces, shopping malls, refreshment rooms, discotheques, pubs and airport lounges.

In order to strengthen the reporting mechanism of violations and to encourage non-smokers and public at large to report violations, the health ministry also started a national toll free helpline 1800-110-456.

India is the second largest consumer of tobacco products in the world. Every year eight to nine lakh people die because of tobacco related diseases. Almost 40 percent of all health problems and 50 percent of all cancers are related to tobacco use in the country.

Police chief for CCTVs in homes, offices

CHENNAI: City police commissioner K Radhakrishnan has appealed to Chennai residents to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in homes as
well as in offices to prevent burglary and robbery. Responding to a query, the police chief said that his force was assessing sensitive polling booths in Chennai and a wide-ranging bandobust was being planned to prevent untoward incidents.

“We have already met people in IT companies, shopping malls, commercial complexes and private offices and advised them to install CCTVs inside and outside their premises to maintain surveillance. In a recent incident, a senior officer in the Accountant General’s office was arrested for stealing a brand new car from a leading software company. The company general manager had found his car missing from the parking slot in the campus. Police managed to trace the accused in three hours using the CCTV facility installed in the company,” K Radhakrishnan told The Times Of India.

“It will be useful to the individual as well as to society, preventing threats from intruders. As the CCTV is not very expensive and is available in the market for Rs 2,500 and above, it can be afforded by an individual. It is not only useful in tracking down criminals, but is a safety mechanism for lonely senior citizens and the community at large,” Radhakrishnan added.

Responding to a query about arrangements for the general elections, Radhakrishnan said, “Counting of sensitive booths is underway. We have planned to rope in the city’s entire police strength to ensure peaceful polling. We are conducting surprise checks to detect counterfeit currency. Several college students and private company officials were arrested recently for chain-snatching incidents in the city. We have formed special teams to nab them and bring down crime.”

Shanghai emerges as top online shopping city in China

New Delhi, Feb 17 (ANI): Shanghai has come out as the top city in China where most of the online shopping is done.

As per the report, conducted by the iResearch Consulting Company, in 2008, the city is said to have spent 16.5 billion yuan, with the yearly spending online being 2,200 yuan per capita, reports China Daily.

The report was based on a nationwide survey of 100,000 Internet users interviewed through 84 major websites, and the total volume of online shopping in China reached a record high of over 120 billion yuan in 2008, up 128.5 percent over 2007.

“E-business has become a vital part of the retail world, and large cities, like Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen that dominate the offline retail world also lead the pack online,” said Liu Zheng, senior consultant from Beijing-based SDR Consulting Company.

“It is also notable that the second and third tier cities such as in Shandong and Jiangsu provinces have become the major growing areas for online shoppers.

“More than 70 percent of users of Taobao.com are from those second and third tier areas,” he added.

Male online shoppers outnumber women, accounting for 55 percent, with electronic products being the main consumption choice among male shoppers.

And despite the proximity of several large shopping malls, 27-year-old Shanghai resident Xiao Gao said she prefers shopping on the Internet.

“Online shopping has increasingly become a mainstream lifestyle, and I purchase products or services online at least once a week,” she said.

“Low price is the chief consideration.

“It’s kind of life support that can reduce the traffic driving to those stores.

“I am making online shopping a habit and spending more,” she added.

So far, Taobao.com retains a stable leading position in online shopping with 82.2 percent market share, followed by PAIPAI.com and eachnet.com, with 9.9 percent and 7.9 percent, respectively. ANI)
