Federer relishing Soderling rematch, Nadal wary

(Reuters) – Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have not put a foot wrong so far at this year’s French Open and all signs point to the world’s two outstanding men’s players dueling for the title on Sunday.

Sports

There are still some pitfalls lurking on the Parisian clay, however, and Tuesday and Wednesday’s quarter-finals will be a better yardstick of their form after they both arrived at the business end of the tournament with a 12-0 sets record.

On Tuesday Federer faces Robin Soderling, the man he beat in last year’s final to complete a career grand slam after the Swede cleared the decks with a sensational defeat of Nadal.

Four-times champion Nadal, hungry to prove that last year’s fourth-round shocker against Soderling was an aberration, will have to pass fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro, a player whose five career titles have all been on clay.

Since beating Nadal last year Soderling has transformed into a genuine top-10 player and his form here has been only marginally less impressive than Federer’s.

He has never beaten the Swiss master in 12 attempts though and Federer oozed confidence when he looked ahead to another clash with the powerhouse Swede.

“He’s going to be fitter than in the past when I played him during the third round or second round,” Federer told reporters.

“But I’m really looking forward to this match because he hits very strongly, forehand, backhand and serves. This is what I like. This is why I have a good record against him.”

Soderling knows the odds are against him but his body language now suggests a player who believes he can beat anybody when his game clicks into place.

“Even against Roger you will always get a few chances,” he said. “Then you have to take them, because he won’t give you any second opportunities. You have to play well in the important points, which he does so well, that’s why he’s so good.”

After a patchy start against French teenage wildcard Gianni Mina, Nadal’s game has gone up several levels and he appeared to be peaking at the right moment but is still not taking the threat posed by Almagro lightly.

“It’s going to be complicated, he’s going to be very aggressive, but I’ll do my best to make him feel uncomfortable,” Nadal said after beating Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci in straight sets on Monday.

The other men’s quarter-final in the top half features Czech Tomas Berdych against Russian Mikhail Youzhny, both enjoying their best runs at Roland Garros.

Should Nadal overcome Almagro he will be up against either world number three and regular sparring partner Novak Djokovic or grand slam quarter-final debutant Jurgen Melzer — the first Austrian to reach the last eight at Roland Garros since 1998.

Adebayor’s gun t-shirt shocker at 50 Cent concert

London, Mar 27(ANI): Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor reportedly wore a gun t-shirt to a 50 Cent concert weeks after he was attacked in Angola.

Two months ago, the 26-year-old and his Togo team-mates were attacked by terrorist gunmen during the African Cup of Nations, in which the team’s coach driver, PR man and assistant manager were shot dead.

However, despite the shocking incident which nearly killed him, Adebayor stunned fans when he came sporting a black shirt with a Smith and Wesson revolver emblazoned across the front.

“I was shocked to see him wearing a top like that after what happened to him in Africa,” The Daily Star quoted one onlooker, as saying.

“His fashion choice was tasteless considering all the people who died and were injured. You’d think he’d have more respect,” he added. (ANI)

Lady GaGa nips out in racy see-through lace catsuit at NY fashion week

London, September 16 (ANI): Lady GaGa continued her shock tactics as she stepped out in a bizarre see-through red lace catsuit teamed up with eye mask and eccentric spiky hair piece at the New York fashion week.

The singer’s modesty was said to be hardly covered by a barely there red G-string and an almost-strategically placed ruffle on her costume.

Meanwhile, the 23-year-old recently gave a blood-covered performance and faked her own death at the MTV Video Music Awards, during which she changed her outfit five times, reports the Daily Mail.

However, the ‘Poker Face’ hitmaker’s appearance was said to be a little toned down at the Marc Jacobs Spring Summer 2010 fashion show after party, where she bumped into fellow ‘shocker’ Madonna.

Madonna admitted she was “very flattered” by comparisons to the newcomer.

The Queen of Pop complimented the star, saying: “She looks like she’s going to a carnival in Venice, very beautiful.” (ANI)

Sienna Miller’s new addiction: golf

Washington, Apr 15 (ANI): Sienna Miller has found a sporty new hobby: golf.

The British stunner just can’t get enough of the game, and realised that hitting the green helped her reconnect with her golf-mad father.

“I actually am a golfer now. Not a very good one, but I am keen on it. I used to give my dad a hard time about being into golf, but now I completely understand it,” Contactmusic quoted her, as saying.

Meanwhile, Miller will be landing in Broadway in October.

She is set to make her American stage debut in Patrick Marber’s “After Miss Julie,” an adaptation of August Strindberg’s 1888 shocker, a timeless tale of lust and repression.

Miller previously performed the part in London in 2003. (ANI)

Assam’s perfume baron Ajmal loves swanky cars, gold

Guwahati, April 1 (IANS) Perfume baron and Asom United Democratic Front (AUDF) leader Badruddin Ajmal is not as rich as was generally believed, but the cleric sure fancies swanky cars and gold jewellery, if one goes by his declaration.

Ajmal declared in his affidavit accompanying his nomination papers for the Silchar parliamentary seat in Assam Tuesday that he has Rs.197,777 cash in hand and his wife Rizwana has Rs.567,329 – both together having little more than Rs.750,000 cash in hand.

But the maulana from the Deoband Islamic seminary in Uttar Pradesh, who sports a flowing beard and skullcap, also has a penchant for driving swanky cars. He claims to have two cars worth about Rs.4.6 million.

Another interesting characteristic: his love for gold and gold jewellery – which seems to be more than what his wife owns.

According to the affidavit, Ajmal declared that he possesses gold worth Rs.322,000, while his wife’s gold jewellery is estimated at Rs.224,000.

‘I don’t believe in money power in elections…all I want is the goodwill and support of people, and of course prayers and blessings from everybody to help me win,’ Ajmal told IANS.

Ajmal is contesting from two constituencies – Silchar in south Assam and Dhubri in the west.

Of the total eight seats where the AUDF is contesting this time, his younger brother Sirajuddin Ajmal is also contesting from two – Nagaon and Kaliabor.

Questions are, therefore, being asked if Ajmal is encouraging dynastic politics.

‘We are considering the winning chances of the candidates while giving party tickets for the elections…there is nothing to suggest family politics in it,’ said Hafiz Rashid Choudhury, working president of the AUDF.

Both brothers are legislators in the Assam assembly after the senior Ajmal floated the AUDF six months before the 2006 state elections in Assam.

But for all those supporters hoping to see Ajmal doling out cash lavishly during the elections, the Maulana’s cash position must have surely come as a shocker.

Oz spinner McGain may get record for worst Test bowling figures

Cape Town (South Africa), Mar.21 (ANI): Fans at Cape Town’s Newlands ground have given Bryce McGain a new nickname and it’s not a welcome one – Mick Lewis.

McGain’s fellow Victorian infamously took 0-113 in the one-day international in Johannesburg three years ago when South Africa scored 9-438 to win.

Lewis holds the world record for most runs conceded in a one-day innings and McGain’s Test debut was shaping up like a similar shocker after Friday’s second day of the third Test against South Africa.

McGain, also known as cartoon character “Mr Magoo”, had figures of 0-102 from 11 overs.

This put the leg-spinner on pace for the world record in a Test innings for worst economy rate (minimum 60 balls).

South Africa reached 3-404 on day two in reply to Australia’s first innings of 209 and McGain was expected to get another opportunity on Saturday to improve his figures.

But it’s fair to say Australia coach Tim Nielsen wasn’t pleased with his initial efforts.

“He didn’t bowl anywhere near as consistently as we would like. e bowled both full and short,” Nielsen said on Friday.

“They obviously made a decision I think to attack him pretty hard. So he’s under pressure the whole time and the scoreboard’s ticking over. He can see the numbers going up against his name and I think the pressure just got a bit much today. It was a pretty hard initiation for him in Test-match cricket,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Nielsen, as saying.

With his Ashes hopes badly bruised, McGain wasn’t “bouncing around the change rooms and doing cartwheels” after the second day’s play, Nielsen added.

The coach indicated Australia may have fielded an unchanged side for all three Tests of the series in South Africa if No.6 batsman Marcus North hadn’t pulled out of the side with a gastro complaint.

Nielsen says McGain “has a bit of learning to do”.

“He’s disappointed mostly in the fact that he doesn’t feel as though he bowled as well as he could have,” Nielsen added. (ANI)

Ranji Trophy Final: UP’s Bhuvneshwar and Mumbai’s Rohit star on opening day

Hyderabad, Jan.12 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mumbai’s star batters Rohit Sharma and Abhishek Nayar stole the limelight on the first day of the five-day Ranji Trophy final on Monday.

While Kumar captured his first five wicket haul in a final, Sharma rode his his luck to score an unbeaten 113. He was ably assisted by all-rounder Nayar, who fell one short of a well-deserved century.

Kumar stole the thunder from much more illustrious names and in-form players in the morning by reducing Mumbai to 55 for four, including consigning batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar to his first first-class duck in Indian domestic cricket.

Sharma lived a charmed life, being dropped twice by Uttar Pradesh skipper Mohammad Kaif. He added a streaky 207 with Nayar while waltzing away to his fourth first class hundred.

The final began with the question of how UP would counter Tendulkar. But in the first session, Mumbai were asking themselves how to tackle the seam movement UP bowlers were getting with the new ball.

After winning the toss on a greenish pitch, Kaif went straight to his strength – the pace bowlers. Early breakthroughs were seen as the only way UP could threaten a solid Mumbai team, who have looked unbeatable all season. The Kumars, Praveen and Bhuvneshwar, gave UP just that kind of start.

Bhuvneshwar provided UP the first breakthroughs, claiming Wasim Jaffer and Vinayak Samant LBW. Mumbai lost Ajinkya Rahane, who got a shocker of a decision from from the umpire – the delivery from R P Singh that pitched outside his leg stump.

Bhuvneshwar claimed the all important wicket of Tendulkar when he inside-edged the ball onto the pad, and Shivakant Shukla ran in and dived from short midwicket to take the catch, stunning the Mumbai team.

At close of play, Mumbai’s score read 297 for 6 with Sharma on 113 and Ajit Agarkar on 21 at the crease. Kumar ended up with five wickets for 64 runs of 23 overs. (ANI)
