Former Miss Universe hopeful taking up career in boxing

Melbourne, June 4 (ANI): Former Miss Universe hopeful and Water Ski world champion Lauryn Eagle has revealed that she would like to take up professional boxing.

Eagle, 22, a beauty pageant regular, also revealed that her mother has no idea about her plans, and that if she did, she would definitely be disowned.

“She is going to be in shock. She doesn’t know a thing,” News.com.au quoted the model/athlete as telling the Daily Telegraph during a break in training at her gym in Sydney’s Sutherland shire.

“I would like to have a fight and I am sussing it out now.

“I know some might be critical because I am a girl but I can’t really let what other people think get to me. It’s something I want to do. I just love it,” she said.

Eagle hasn’t given up on another crack at Miss Universe either, a competition she withdrew from this year after a run-in with the law.

“The Miss Universe thing was just bad timing. But it is something I can do later on,” she said.

“Right now I am focused on my boxing training and my skiing,” she stated.

Her trainer Losh Matthews said: “You bet.”

“She is a young girl who has been through a lot but I have never seen anyone more committed or dedicated in my life,” he added. (ANI)

Jagan in Delhi after party asks him to stop yatra

Congress MP Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, who has invited the displeasure of high command over his ‘Odarpu Yatra’, on Sunday left for New Delhi where he is expected to meet top party leaders.

Jagan, who has defied the high command’s directive not to undertake the yatra, is expected to meet senior leaders over the issue, sources said.

Congress Core Committee member and Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had made it clear on Saturday that Jagan should call off his yatra as per the high command’s directive.

The Congress central leadership had asked Jagan not to go ahead with his ‘Odarpu Yatra’ in Telangana in view of the surcharged atmosphere in the region.

Defying the directive, Jagan, however, embarked on the yatra on May 28. The tour was to console the families of those who allegedly committed suicide or died of shock over the death of his father Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.

Violence took place at Mahabubabad railway station ahead of Jagan’s arrival, as Telangana supporters, who were opposing his visit, threw stones and clashed with the police.

Jagan would attend a meeting of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance during his stay in Delhi, the sources added.

I was expecting to be included in Pakistan team: Naved

Karachi, May 26 (IANS) Banned all-rounder Rana Naved is ‘deeply disappointed’ after being ignored in Pakistan’s 35-man preliminary squad for the upcoming Asian Cup and England tour.

The all-rounder said he was a expecting a place in the team after reports that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will include all the banned players in the team.

‘I am deeply disappointed at not being picked in the team, it’s a huge shock for me’, Rana told IANS.

The all-rounder who was one of the seven Pakistan players to face action by the PCB following the team’s failure on the Australia tour said the inclusion of other banned players in the team hurts even more.

‘Other banned players like Shoaib Malik and Younis Khan were selected, why I am not there? I was also hoping for a berth in national team,’ he said.

Rana, a former Indian Cricket League (ICL) player, said he would continue to strive to win his place back in the national team.

‘It’s a decision of the selectors and I have to accept their decision in any way but I will continue the hard work to retain my place in team,’ he said.

The all-rounder who is fighting a case against his one-year ban also expressed dissatisfaction on the hearings and called for open proceedings of the case.

‘I am not satisfied with the hearings in which we are not allowed to give our version… the hearings should be made public,’ he said.

Stressed Nadal unhappy with winning start

Rafael Nadal’s 6-2 6-2 6-2 win over French teenager Gianni Mina looked as stress-free as it gets for the four-times Roland Garros champion but the Spaniard was far from happy on Tuesday.

“I played poorly because I made a lot of unforced errors,” said Nadal, back to reclaim his crown after last year’s shock fourth-round defeat by Robin Soderling.

“The ball was not doing what I wanted to do. I didn’t play well. That’s the truth. That’s why I couldn’t play my game as usual. I did things in such a way that I couldn’t play well compared with what I usually do.

“I’m a bit nervous or stressed. It’s the first round. The first round is always difficult in this tournament. But I have to re-focus and calm down and move forward,” he told reporters.

Nadal’s French Open build-up was perfection with 15 consecutive wins on clay in Monte Carlo, Rome and Madrid and despite being seeded behind defending champion Roger Federer he is most people’s favourite to reclaim the title.

INJURY PROBLEMS

The Mallorcan, who endured injury problems and poor form in 2009 after suffering his first defeat at Roland Garros a year ago, was at pains to play down those expectations as he continues to try and recover his best form.

“Right now it’s very difficult to speak about the favourites,” he said. “Sure I am one of the players that if I play my best tennis I’m gonna have chances but a lot of players think the same than me.”

Nadal had plenty in reserve against 18-year-old wildcard Mina who was far from overawed by playing one of the greatest claycourters the game has seen in the first round.

The runner-up in last year’s junior singles delighted the crowd on a muggy Court Suzanne Lenglen with bold shot-making, occasionally wrong-footing his opponent with flashing winners.

He never really threatened to extend the contest, however, and bowed out with a forehand over the baseline as Nadal took his Roland Garros record to 32-1 and set up a second-round match against Argentine Horacio Zeballos.

“I had some nice exchanges and very nice shots,” Mina told reporters. “I don’t know if it was his best match but he had to fight back. I was probably a pain for him.”

Former Pak captain Mohammed Yousuf’s family members embrace Islam

Islamabad, May 20 (ANI): Family members of former Pakistan cricket captain Mohammed Yousuf have embraced Islam, almost five years after he turned to the religion from Christianity.

The Nation quoted a private television channel as reporting that Yousuf’s three brothers along with their family members have embraced Islam.

Yousuf, who was known as Yousuf Youhana prior to his change of religion, had accepted Islam in 2005 much to the discomfort of his family members, particularly his mother.

“I don”t want to give Yousuf my name after what he has done. We came to know about his decision when he offered Friday Prayers at a local mosque. It was a shock,” Yousuf’s mother had said when the news about his son changing his religion was first made public.

Yousuf was effectively banned from playing international cricket for an indefinite period by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in March following an inquiry into the team”s defeat during the tour of Australia, which held him responsible for the team’s shoddy performance during the tour.

He later announced his retirement from all formats of the game in protest against the PCB’s decision. (ANI)

Courtney Love cosies up to Uma Thurman’s ex

New York, May 18 (ANI): Rock musician Courtney Love has added fuel to rumours that she is involved with actress Uma Thurman’s hotelier-ex Andre Balazs after she was spotted cosying up to him.

Love, 45, had denied rumours that she was romantically involved with Balazs, saying that he was nothing more than an “old friend” and her “sometimes landlord”.

But their recent behaviour at Balazs’ uber-exclusive club Boom Boom Room inside the Standard Hotel suggested otherwise.

“They came to the Boom Boom Room together late Thursday night and initially went their separate ways,” the New York Daily News quoted a source as saying.

“At first, Courtney was chatting with a couple of guys about her music. But eventually, she and Andre snuck out to the smoking deck together and were hugging and being touchy.

“They both seemed very sweet and genuine,” the source stated.

But when Balazs was approached by a woman he knew, Love is said to have lost it.

“When Courtney and Andre decided to call it a night and hail a cab, Andre was stopped by a woman he knew,” the source revealed.

“As soon as he started talking to her, Courtney hit the roof. It was obvious to everyone that the woman was a business associate, but not to Courtney.

“She acted like a toddler! It got so bad that the woman Andre was talking to got really embarrassed, and he had to apologize and walk away. By then, Courtney was crying and screaming.

“Andre started shouting right back at her. They eventually got into a cab, but the few people left on the street at that hour were in shock,” the source added. (ANI)

Commuters strip off on London Underground to promote new show!

Lyz Parker, 23, found the naughty jelly candy in a bag of Candy King she got at Tesco Home Plus in Staines, Middlesex.

“When I opened the bag I screamed so loudly the whole office came running over. I couldn”t believe my eyes,” the Sun quoted her as saying.

All Blacks job still an option for Mitchell

Western Force coach John Mitchell has left the door ajar for another go at coaching the All Blacks.

Mitchell was sacked as head coach of New Zealand after it suffered a shock semi-final loss to Australia in the 2003 World Cup.

The 46-year-old has already confirmed he will leave the Force at the end of the 2011 Super 14 season and said he would consider a return to the All Blacks coaching ranks if given the chance.

“Well who knows. I’ve got to earn that right,” Mitchell said in Auckland ahead of the Force’s clash with the Blues on Saturday.

“First and foremost is my job here with the Western Force and (I’m) committed right through to the end of my contract.

“After that New Zealand will be taken into consideration.

“Let’s face it, I was disappointed with the rugby World Cup result, I took it personally. But that’s just natural.

“I think I’m a better character and person for that experience.”

Mitchell said he would also consider coaching in South Africa once his time with the Force expired.

But he expressed particular fondness of NZ, his country of birth.

“You tend to recognise the qualities of the landscape in a place like Queenstown and the fresh air and those sort of things are unique,” he said.

“And just the intimacy that exists within New Zealand and just the rugby fabric that’s very much part of the community.”

Mitchell predicted the Wallabies would be a smokey at the 2011 World Cup in NZ.

“I see Australia being a real threat,” he said.

“Another 20-odd Test matches on their shoulders, another couple of Tri-Nations and end of year tours, that side will become a lot more experienced and confident as it gets closer to the World Cup.”

The Force have won two games on the trot but still sit 12th on the table after opening their season with six straight losses.

Drink driving father a risk to the community, court told

A man who was allegedly caught driving drunk with his one-year-old son in the car has been remanded in custody by a Sydney court.

Police say Ngai Kerry was four times over the limit when he drove through Lalor Park last night with his boy.

They say he stopped when police pulled him over but continued driving before officers could talk to him.

It is alleged the 24-year-old then knocked down a set of traffic lights, narrowly avoiding a crash with an oncoming car.

His car became airborne and crashed into two townhouses, causing significant damage.

Kerry was found nursing his baby in the back yard of one of the houses.

His lawyer applied for bail saying his client needs his freedom to arrange his defence case and because he is the primary source of income for his wife and child.

But the prosecutor said Kerry is a risk to the community, has never held a licence and has been caught driving before.

The court heard that in March, Kerry failed to appear in court for a driving offence.

In papers tendered to the court, police expressed their shock that no-one was hurt in the crash.

They said Kerry has shown no remorse.

The magistrate refused bail and the matter returns to court next week.

Area Health suspends Leeton surgery

Surgery at the Leeton District Hospital in the New South Wales Riverina has been suspended for three months with no guarantee it will resume.

The Greater Southern Area Health Service says it has temporarily suspended surgery at Leeton District Hospital from today to identify possible changes to surgical services to ensure they are appropriate.

When asked if Leeton could lose local surgery altogether, the director of medical services Doctor Joe McGirr said he could not pre-empt the outcome.

“It’s difficult to pre-empt the process that we’re going through, but we did indicate to the doctors that we would be working very closely with them,” he said

“They emphasised to us how important the theatre was for the services to the community, for services for obstetrics and obviously for their own recruiting and retaining doctors for the community and we’re very acutely aware of that so we need to address that concern.

“There are a range of issues that have been identified. A couple for example include the fact that at the moment there’s only one entry and exit to the theatre and that’s actually a fire issue. There’s also an issue with the size of the recovery room.”

The closure means Leeton residents will have to travel to Narrandera or Griffith for surgery for the next three months.

Dr McGirr says obstetrics services will continue at Leeton District Hospital for low-risk patients.

“We will make arrangements for patients who are in a high-risk category because there won’t be the availability of caesarean section cover at Leeton during this time, we’ll make arrangements for them to be referred to Griffith Hospital or indeed Narrandera hospital.”

The Leeton Shire Council says the decision to close the theatre came as a shock but it now agrees the closure is necessary.

The Mayor Paul Maytom says council received a briefing from the health service last week.

He expects the training and upgrade to improve health services for Leeton residents in future.

“I suppose the good thing about this is that we can be then satisfied after the three months or beyond – it may take longer than three months for the theatre to be upgraded – we’ll have the appropriate skills and facilities to suit our needs if we have that emergency happen in our town,” he said.

“There’s two aspects of it, one is the theatre itself needs an upgrade and the other one is that because I understand there’s not a lot of theatre or operations that are being done at Leeton hospital they need to up-skill the theatre nursing staff from Leeton hospital by taking them to Griffith or Narrandera Hospital.”
