World’s oldest dram unveiled in Scotland

A Scottish whisky firm has unveiled bottles of what it claims is the oldest single malt whisky in the world.

Gordon and MacPhail’s Mortlach 70-Year-Old Speyside was sampled at a launch party in Edinburgh Castle, where it was escorted through the doors by pipers and a military escort.

“It matured for 70 years in the cask and that is what makes it the oldest whisky in the world,” a spokeswoman for Gordon and MacPhail said.

The whisky was filled into its cask on October 15, 1938, by the grandfather of the company’s managing directors David and Michael Urquhart.

There will only be 54 full-size bottles priced at 10,000 pounds each ($16,450), with another 162 smaller bottles on sale for 2,000 pounds.

The limited edition malt was matured in a former sherry hogshead cask made from Spanish oak. It has been bottled in a “tear shaped, hand-blown” crystal decanter with a silver stopper.

Whisky taster Charles MacLean described the single malt as “a delicate, fresh, vital, fruity whisky, with unusual attributes of waxiness and smokiness”.

“It’s the oldest cask of whisky that, in my knowledge, has ever been bottled,” he said. “The spirit and the wood have inter-reacted beautifully over this long period of time.”

“Sherry, Lexi, and I have been on quite a journey the past few months. All of the hardship that has come our way has been due to an addiction that I have had to prescription drugs for the last several years. Yes, this is completely my fault. Sherry, Lexi, or K-LOVE had nothing to do with the events that occurred.”

Further Jon Rivers dedicated his healing to Sherry Rivers and thanked Jesus for curing him.  he has also denied the rumors of infidelity which some reports have indicated.

Zardari’s aides force Sherry Rehman to resign

Islamabad, Mar 14 (ANI): Pakistan’s Information Minister Sherry Rehman resigned following differences over government’s handling of the electronic media and insistence by President Asif Zardari and his close aides to impose further restrictions on private news channels.

Rehman was against the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA)’s blocking of a private TV channel without taking her into confidence Highly placed sources said that Rehman had a series of heated arguments with senior members of the government when some television channels were “penalised” for airing what were perceived as anti-government views during the lawyers’ Long March.

They said that when Rehman failed to persuade Zardari and other members of his team and was cornered by some members who even blamed for her failure to ‘control’ the media, she decided to quit the coveted post of Information Minister.

Rehman was regarded as one of the most prominent members of the federal cabinet and she had, for the past one year, single-handedly tackled the print and electronic media, sometimes in a very hostile environment.

But some members of the government had been constantly opposing her and had campaigned to dislodge her, the Dawn reported.

The former journalist kept on ignoring the moves, but then Sherry Rehman finally decided to quit when her request to go soft on the media failed.

Meanwhile, presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said that Rehman has not resigned from her ministerial office.

Terming the reports of Sherry’s resignation as false and baseless, he told a private TV channel that no differences had emerged between the Information Minister and the PPP leadership over the media’s role during a meeting at the Presidency. (ANI)

Smoking cessation drug helps reduce alcohol cravings

Washington, Mar 3 (ANI): A popular smoking cessation drug has been found to effectively reduce alcohol cravings, claim researchers.

The study led by researchers from Yale School of Medicine has shown that heavy-drinking smokers were much less likely to drink after taking the drug varenicline.

They found that the group taking varenicline, sold under the name, Chantix, reported fewer cravings for alcohol and less intoxicated when they did drink.

The participants were also much more likely to remain abstinent after being offered drinks than those who received a placebo.

Moreover, there were no adverse side effects associated with combining varenicline with alcohol in the doses studied.

“We anticipate that the results of this preliminary study will trigger clinical trials of varenicline as a primary treatment for alcohol use disorders, and as a potential dual treatment for alcohol and tobacco use disorders,” said Sherry McKee, associate professor of psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine and lead author of the study.

The drug not only helped quit smoking, it also helped reduce alcohol cravings.

“A medication such as varenicline, which may target shared biological systems in alcohol and nicotine use, holds promise as a treatment for individuals with both disorders” McKee said.

The study is published in the journal Biological Psychiatry. (ANI)

Scientists find evidence of ancient hot springs on Mars

Washington, Feb 13 (ANI): A new research has reported data from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) that suggests the discovery of ancient hot springs in the Vernal Crater, sites where life forms may have evolved on Mars.

Hot springs have great astrobiological significance, as the closest relatives of many of the most ancient organisms on Earth can thrive in and around hydrothermal springs.

If life forms have ever been present on Mars, hot spring deposits would be ideal locations to search for physical or chemical evidence of these organisms and could be target areas for future exploratory missions.

In the research paper entitled, “A Case for Ancient Springs in Arabia Terra, Mars,” Carlton C. Allen and Dorothy Z. Oehler, from the Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science Directorate at the NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas, propose that new image data from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) on MRO depict structures in Vernal Crater that appear to have arisen as part of a major area of ancient spring activity.

The data suggest that the southern part of Vernal Crater has experienced episodes of water flow from underground to the surface and may be a site where Martian life could have developed.

“Hot spring deposits are key target areas for future Mars missions,” said Sherry L. Cady, Associate Professor in the Department of Geology at Portland State University.

“Such deposits on Earth preserve evidence of the fossilized remains of the microbial communities that inhabited the hot springs over a wide range of spatial scales,” Sherry added.

The potential to find key evidence indicative of life-biofabrics, microbial remains, chemical fossils in minerals-is high when sedimentary deposits form from hydrothermal fluids.
Hot spring fluids are typically laden with dissolved mineral ions that, when they precipitate out and create the hydrothermal deposit, enhance fossilization of all types of biosignatures,” said Sherry. (ANI)

When Michelle Obama ‘swapped hubby’s gifted diamond earrings for a pricier pair’

Chicago, January 26 (ANI): U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama, who was reported to have received a pair of diamond earrings from her President husband Barack on her birthday, was said to have returned the pair in exchange of another one double the price.

Her better half had allegedly hand picked the present, and paid a reported 5,000-dollars for it

“Mr. Obama came in himself and picked out a pair of earrings for Michelle, which were sort of long and dramatic, and the diamond dangled at the bottom,” the Chicago Sun Times quoted Sherry Bender, owner of the Goldsmith Ltd., as saying.

But the mum-of-two had later returned to the store to exchange the earrings, picking up new ones instead, reportedly worth around 12,000 dollars.
Bender added: “Michelle came in, returned the earrings, looked around and picked out something a little more classic, with bigger stones, that was twice the price. She wanted to check with her husband first — then Barack came back in and bought what she wanted — which happened to be what I suggested originally!”

Bender, who designed the earrings continued: “It was pretty ypical of a married couple. But that was what was cute about it.”

However, Michelle’s spokesmen refused to reveal details about her hubby’s birthday present last year. (ANI)

ISI launches global SI-War against Durrani

Islamabad, Jan.16 (ANI): The Inter-Services Intelligence agency in Pakistan appears to have launched a coordinated SI-War against the country’s former National Security Adviser, Major General (retired) Mahmud Ali Durrani, aimed at proving that he was an American agent in Islamabad working for American and Indian interests.

Journalists and publications who are close to the establishment in Islamabad are being used to project the line that after Major General (retired) Durrani, the “agents” who are pushing Islamabad into publicly accepting the “half-cooked evidence” provided by the United States and India in relation to the November 26, 2008 terror attacks on Mumbai, are Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Hussain Haqqani and Information and Broadcasting Minister Sherry Rehman.

According to one report, a powerful group of which Haqqani and Rehman are prominent members is working overtime for the past several weeks to convince their superiors for Pakistan to accept “blame without verification and without pursuing other compelling leads” in connection with the Mumbai attacks.

The report further goes on to say that Major General (retired) Durrani’s behavior over the last few days, “and especially on January 7″ has been “particularly desperate”, and that there are rumors in circulation that he could be arrested and interrogated to “determine the interests he was serving”.here is a view that Durrani has had the backing of both President Asif Ali Zardari and Rehman, and that there was an attempt by Rehman to rescue Durrani from his eventual sacking.

The report further goes on to say that Durrani’s conduct and the recent security-related policy failures of the government “reinforce the need for a purge” both within the government and the political elite. It is being claimed in the corridors of power here that foreign governments have been able to breach both institutions and cultivate assets, who have been ” conducting their own private foreign policies directly with foreign powers, without the approval or knowledge of the Pakistani state.”

Durrani has been allegedly accused of contacting a Pakistani journalist working for the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) in December and leaking the story of a Lashkar activist confessing to making phone calls to the Mumbai terrorists. It is now being said that Durrani was seeking to embarrass Pakistan and quashing the voices calling for evidence and verification – a classic pressure tactic by an insider.

The WSJ is said to have come out with an elaborate story, linking the alleged confession to the ISI’s tense relations with elected governments in Pakistan since the 1990s. Durrani, it seems, wanted to expose the ISI for its role in clandestine attacks on India, a view that has always been projected by the Indian establishment.

As far as Ambassador Haqqani is concerned, the report says that he has been insisting with his superiors in Islamabad that Pakistan accepts the FBI evidence on a tape recording that purportedly shows a Pakistani citizen in Pakistan talking to one of the terrorists involved in the 26/11 mayhem that claimed 179 lives. Critics of this stance are saying that this information needs to be verified by Pakistani experts to determine its accuracy.

Haqqani’s failure to convince Islamabad, according to the report, has made the pro-American lobby desperate enough to send the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen to Islamabad to convince President Zardari to “allow the Indian Air Force to conduct limited surgical strikes” and to “deactivate the state of alert in the Pakistan Air Force” for this purpose. Admiral Mullen failed in his mission.

A four-point charge sheet has reportedly been prepared to showcase foreign policy blunders while Durrani was NSA, and it includes the following:

Immediate admission of guilt on behalf of ISI, when Mr. Gilani was told accept the sending of ISI Director General to New Delhi on India’s summons.

The weak, apologetic diplomacy in the face Indian war-mongering

Misleading China in the UN Security Council voting, resulting in incriminating Pakistani individuals and organizations without evidence

The Zardari Government is suspected of dragging its feet on issuing orders to the Pakistani military to raise the level of alert even when Indian defence forces were moving to forward positions.

The report particularly focuses on the events of January 7 when Durrani apparently leaked to an Indian TV channel and a couple of Pakistani news channels that Pakistan has accepted the Indian evidence that Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving Mumbai terrorist, was a Pakistani citizen.

The report says that Durrani may have wanted this story to be leaked anonymously, but one journalist made the “error” of naming him.

Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir sought to deny Durrani’s leak, but Information Minister Rehman went a step further and text messaged that Durrani was right in naming Kasab a Pakistani citizen.

The report says that Durrani is an active member of the “Balusa Group” created and financed by the US Government to lobby Washington’s interests in the upper echelons of the Pakistani Government, with the stated prime objective of maintaining peace between Pakistan and India through track II diplomacy. However, according to sources within the Pakistani establishment, the group was also involved to promote US energy interests in Afghanistan, India and Pakistan, and to convince Pakistan to let India have unlimited access to Afghanistan and the Central Asian republics, a concession sans returns.

It concludes by saying that Durrani, as an insider, has facilitated US moves to expand the war in Afghanistan, weaken the Pakistani military and firmly align Pakistan with American interests opposite to China and others, with India’s help, and therefore, there is a need to purge individuals like him on a priority basis. India slams Pakistan for its ”flip-flop” on Kasab”s nationality

Chennai, Jan 8 (ANI): External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee today slammed Pakistan for its “flip-flop” on Kasab”s nationality.

“Kasab has told us quite categorically where he comes from, where he received military and arms training and where his handlers are located. Unfortunately, despite this, we have seen a consistent flip-flop in the reaction of the government in Islamabad,” Mukherjee said at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Chennai.

Speaking on the Mumbai attacks, he said the attacks in Mumbai brought about a huge international reaction, both anger at what happened in terms of the external hand and sorrow at the number of persons who were killed.”

“Even after one month of the operation, there continues to be recalcitrance in bringing the perpetrators to justice,” he added.

After a prolonged delay in accepting that Kasab belonged to its soil, Pakistan finally accepted that Kasab was its national.

“Ajmal Kasab is a Pakistani. Further investigations are under way,” Pakistan Information Minister Sherry Rehman said yesterday.

The acceptance from Pakistan comes after India provided a ”dossier” of evidence to prove that the perpetrators of the Mumbai carnage had links to Pakistan.

Terming Mumbai attack as “unique”, he said, “Let us not forget terrorism knows no borders. All of us are vulnerable to terrorist attacks.”

Calling upon the overseas Indians to take up the concerns of India on terror, he said as ambassadors abroad, their words will be heard in multiple corners of the world.

The Minister also asserted that such strikes will not “shake our resolve” of inclusive growth as India can manage multiple challenges at the same point of time. (ANI)

Pak rules out “official support” for “heinous crime” committing Kasab

Islamabad, Jan.8 (ANI): After accepting that the lone surviving Mumbai gunner is a Pakistani national, Islamabad has now refused to give any official support to Ajmal Amir Kasab.

“Kasab has committed a heinous crime. He will not be provided any official support or consular access,” the Daily Times quoted Pak Foreign Office Spokesman Muhammad Sadiq, as saying.

Earlier, after a prolonged delay in accepting that Kasab belonged to its soil, Pakistan finally accepted that Kasab was its national.

“Ajmal Kasab is a Pakistani. Further investigations are under way,” Pakistan Information Minister Sherry Rehman said yesterday.

The acceptance from Pakistan comes after India provided a ‘dossier’ of evidence to prove that the perpetrators of the Mumbai carnage had links to Pakistan.

Kasab had written a letter to the Pakistani High Commission in India, seeking support and legal assistance from the Government of Pakistan.

However, Pakistan consulate had denied receiving any such letter. (ANI)
