Musharraf ‘shedding crocodile tears’, says ex- Pak SCBA chief

Islamabad, Sep.19 (ANI): Pakistan Supreme Court Bar Association’s former President Aitzaz Ahsan has said that former President General Pervez Musharraf is ‘shedding crocodile tears’ while admitting that removing Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry from office in 2007 was a mistake.

Referring to Musharraf’s speech at Trinity University in Saint Antonio, Texas, where the former general admitted that he had committed a mistake while sacking the then Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) from office, Ahsan said Musharraf had committed not only one but two mistakes by removing the higher judiciary and imposing an emergency in the country on November 3, 2007.

Talking to a private television channel, Ahsan said the government and the ‘independent’ judiciary should play their role in trying Musharraf under high treason charges.

He said it was not the right time for lawyers to take their struggle to roads, as they did previously while demanding restoration of the judiciary, The News reports.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) has denied that Musharraf had taken the cabinet into his confidence before promulgating the Provisional Constitutional Ordinance (PCO) and imposing the emergency rule in 2007.

Interacting with media persons during an Iftaar party hosted by PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, several party leaders rejected the notion regarding Musharraf consulting the cabinet before taking the illegal and extra-judicial actions. (ANI)

Weight loss can prevent kidney disease progression in obese patients

Washington, Sept 18 (ANI): Shedding extra pounds can preserve kidney function in obese people with kidney disease, according to a new study led by Indian origin scientist from Cleveland Clinic.

Weight loss can improve a number of health problems, like it can improve control of diabetes, lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and reduce the effects of heart disease.

During the study, Dr Sankar Navaneethan, and his colleagues analysed the studies that examined the effects of weight loss interventions in obese kidney disease patients.

It showed that weight loss attained through diet and exercise reduces proteinuria (excess excretion of protein in the urine-a hallmark of kidney damage) and may prevent additional decline in kidney function in obese patients with kidney disease.

Studies also showed that surgical interventions normalize the filtration rate of the kidneys in obese patients with high filtration rates (a risk factor for the development of kidney disease).

While the findings imply that weight reduction may prevent the progression of kidney disease in obese kidney disease patients, the authors noted that there were only a small number of studies available for analysis and additional high-quality long-term studies on this topic are needed.

The study appears in Clinical Journal of the American Society Nephrology. (ANI)

How genetics influences mate selection among humans

Washington, May 25 (ANI): Shedding new light on how humans choose their partners, a Brazilian scientist has revealed that people have an inherent tendency to get attracted towards genetically opposite individuals.

Professor Maria da Graca Bicalho, head of the Immunogenetics and Histocompatibility Laboratory at the University of Parana, has said that people with diverse major histocompatibility complexes (MHCs) were more likely to choose each other as mates than those whose MHCs were similar.

And she said that this tendency was likely to be an evolutionary strategy to ensure healthy reproduction.

Previous studies have already shown females’ preference for MHC dissimilar mates in many vertebrate species, including humans, and it is also known that MHC influences mating selection by preferences for particular body odours.

In the current study, the researchers decided to investigate mate selection in the Brazilian population, while trying to uncover the biological significance of MHC diversity.

They studied MHC data from 90 married couples, and compared them with 152 randomly generated control couples.

They also counted the number of MHC dissimilarities among those who were real couples, and compared them with those in the randomly-generated ‘virtual couples’.

“If MHC genes did not influence mate selection, we would have expected to see similar results from both sets of couples. But we found that the real partners had significantly more MHC dissimilarities than we could have expected to find simply by chance,” said Bicalho.

Within MHC-dissimilar couples the partners will be genetically different, and such a pattern of mate choice decreases the danger of endogamy (mating among relatives) and increases the genetic variability of offspring.

It’s known that genetic variability is an advantage for offspring, and scientists said that the MHC effect could be an evolutionary strategy underlying incest avoidance in humans and also improving the efficiency of the immune system.

“Although it may be tempting to think that humans choose their partners because of their similarities. Our research has shown clearly that it is differences that make for successful reproduction, and that the subconscious drive to have healthy children is important when choosing a mate,” said Bicalho.

The scientists believe that the findings will help understanding of conception, fertility and gestational failures.

Bicalho will present the findings at the annual conference of the European Society of Human Genetics. (ANI)

Advani claims BJP will emerge as the single largest party

Unnao/Rampur/Ahmedabad, Apr 24 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Prime Ministerial candidate L K Advani has said his party would become the single largest party in the next Parliament.

“The BJP is going to emerge as the biggest party in the Lok Sabha elections. Once the result of the election is out, you will see that National Democratic Front led by BJP will form coalition government,” Advani said in a rally in Unnao.

“The whole talk of Third Front and Fourth Front is a joke. There is no basis to these assertions,” he added.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Ansari, who is contesting election from Rampur , lashed out at actor-turned-politician Sanjay Dutt.

“I want to say that Sanjay Dutt should stop all filmy gimmicks. He should give an answer to the people as to what he has done so far for Rampur in the past five years. Shedding crocodile tears, making terrorists stand on stage, showing filmy gimmicks, Rampur is not a cinema hall and the people of Rampur are not a film screen. The people of Rampur want to ask them what he has done,” Naqvi said.

In Ahmedabad, Raghu Ram, senior supervising producer at MTV India and the executive producer of the popular reality show MTV Roadies campaigned for Mallika Sarabhai, who is contesting against Advani, an independent from Gandhinagar constituency.

Raghu Ram said he wanted to tell the youth of the country to vote for change.

“I want to tell the youth to reject stagnation. If change does not happen now, we are doomed. You know the kind of threat our nation is facing and you know which government is supporting the terrorists,” said Ram. (ANI)
