Musharraf power theft scandal case: Low level workers punished

Islamabad, Sep 17 (ANI): The Islamabad Electric Supply Company (Iesco) has only punished 64 junior officers for their involvement in the power theft scandal involving former President Pervez Musharraf, Shaukat Aziz and others in the luxurious Chak Shahzad farmhouses.

The big guns in the electricity department have not even been touched, according to well-placed sources.

The list of punished employees includes 35-meter readers, 14 line superintendents and 15 sub-divisional officers, The News reports.

Sources said these personnel were those who had to implement the orders of the higher-ups and no high-ranking official has been touched in the order passed by Iesco on 10-9-2009.

The official spokesman for Iesco, Ameer Hussain Chaman, when asked about the punishment, said he was not aware of any such punishments.

“I have not been conveyed any such details, therefore, I cannot offer any comment over the issue,” he added.

Sources said Colonel Umer Hayat was conducting the inquiry and on 9-9-2009 his tenure was completed and on 10-09-2009 these personnel were punished.

They say that in this power-theft scandal the higher-ups passed all the orders and the junior officers had no option, but to obey the orders.

It is worth mentioning here that Musharraf had constructed a modern house on the farm obtained for breeding poultry and vegetables, but the ex-general has been enjoying the cheapest power tariff, D-2(1) connection, which is meant for agriculture tube wells and lift irrigation pumps. (ANI)

‘Embarrassed’ Musharraf’s close aides shying away from commenting on his misdeeds

Islamabad, Sep.16 (ANI) : Close aides of former Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf are too embarrassed and are shying away from responding to the former general’s claims that he had taken the November 3, 2007 actions only after consulting various top officials, including the then Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and the current Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Kayani.

Musharraf’s erstwhile close associates find the topic as ‘too dirty’ to speak about and have been avoiding any queries regarding that by simply saying ‘no comments’.

A former spokesman of the Shaukat Aziz government, however, denied that the cabinet had prior knowledge of Musharraf’s plan of imposing the emergency.

When asked about the issue, Lieutenant General (retired) Ali Jan Orakzai said: “It’s such a dirty subject that leaving it untouched would be a better option.”

Orakzai said he is waiting for the apt time to speak on Musharraf’s claims.

“Let’s see the gravity of the subject. I would record my statement before the court in case summoned on this issue,” The News quoted Orakzai, as saying.

When informed about Shaukat Aziz’s statement that he was not consulted on the November 3 actions, Orakzai said issuing such statements from abroad is easier.

“Shaukat Aziz can do this as he is living in London. I can’t do so,” he said.

Former Punjab Governor Lieutenant General (retired) Khalid Maqbool said he has decided not to enter into any controversy related to the past events that occurred during his stint. (ANI)

Imran encourages Shoaib not to waste last few years of international cricket

Lahore, Sep 7 (ANI): Former Pakistan captain Imran Khan has advised bad boy of Pakistan cricket Shoaib Akhtar not to waste his last few years of international cricket and try to work hard to get back into the team and then go out with honour and pride.

Shoaib went to attend a fund-raising campaign for Imran’s Shaukat Khanum Research Cancer Hospital, but declined to speak on cricket issues with the media.

The fast bowler, who has had a bad last few months and was not considered for the Sri Lanka tour or the Champions Trophy, also appeared fitter having shed considerable weight.

“Imran basically told him that if he gets back into the team and does well, everyone would forget his past and only remember the present. Imran told Shoaib he needs to work hard on his fitness,” the Daily Times quoted a source, as saying.

Chief selector Iqbal Qasim has also made it clear that if Shoaib wants to make a comeback to the Pakistan team, he needs to change his attitude and be more positive.

“Shoaib can still play for Pakistan, provided he works hard on his fitness. But I think he also needs to work on improving his relations with the board,” Qasim said.

The PCB is willing to give the fast bowler another chance as it has completely played down the issue of a show cause notice issued to Shoaib in July for appearing on a television talk show without seeking a clearance.

Shoaib is said to have apologised for his mistake, which pleased the board.

“If Shoaib can improve his attitude, behaviour and be more disciplined and focused he is still an asset for the Pakistan team,” a former Test player at the function said. (ANI)

“The PML-Q made all efforts to negotiate with Akbar Bugti to resolve outstanding issues.

“We had won the confidence of Akbar Bugti to such an extent that he even agreed to nominate Mushahid Hussain as his representative in further dialogue,” Husain said.

The PML-Q chief also urged Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to visit Balochistan to see the plight of Baloch people, and address their grievances.

“The government and all stakeholders will have to work collectively to resolve Balochistan’s issues,” he said. (ANI)

‘Millionaires’ Musharraf and Aziz are “true politicians” when it comes to “cheap gifts”!

Islamabad, July 7 (ANI): No matter how rich former Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz are, they still cherish gifts and presentations offered to them.

Both leaders just adored the numerous gifts, offered to them by various heads of state and other officials during their visit to several countries, and that is why they took all such presentations with them after they stepped down.

The gifts, which were valued at thousands of rupees, were grabbed by Musharraf and Aziz after paying a meagre amount, according to an editorial in the The Dawn.

Neither Musharraf nor Aziz have responded to this ‘legal’ corruption, hoping that the issue will subside with time, and they will continue to live a comfortable life and relish their ‘cheap’ gifts, it adds.

General Musharraf and Shaukat Aziz, were considered to be different than other politicians in the country, and believed to have a ‘clean’ image during their days in power, but it seems both the leaders too want to enjoy life as ‘true politicians’, it concludes. (ANI)

Gilani shrugs off Pak’s economic hardship, doubles MNA’s fund

Peshawar, June 30 (ANI): In the times when Pakistan is facing severe economic hardships, the country’s Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has given a whopping windfall to all the lower house members by doubling their annual development fund to 20 million rupees.

He gave no reason for the hike, and made a single sentence announcement before the 19-day budget session.

“I announce to double the MNAs’ fund of one crore rupees,” the Dawn quoted Gilani, as telling the National Assembly on Tuesday.

It was not immediately clear if the 100 per cent increase in the fund would apply also to the 100 members of the Senate, who until now had been on a par with their lower house counterparts for these allocations.

The practice, continuing since late 1980s, has often been described by critics as a kind of political bribe to lawmakers.

However, former PM Shaukat Aziz stopped giving funds to the opponents of military president Pervez Musharraf.

Although the hike was greeted with desk-thumping from both ruling coalition and opposition, many questions are likely to be raised about the jurisdiction of such a move by Gilani when Pakistan was facing financial stringency.

The new move was neither mentioned by the government in the fiscal budget nor was it asked for in budget debates. (ANI)

Ominous portents of Taliban’s expanding writ as it claims responsibility for POK blast

Muzaffarabad, June 27 (ANI): After purportedly being pushed out of the Swat and Malakand Divisions by the Pakistan Army, the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), in an apparent bid to expand its regime of terror, has claimed responsibility for the suicide strike in Muzaffarabad in which two security personnel were killed and three others injured here on Friday.

Claiming the responsibility for the attack, a deputy to the TTP chief Baitullah Mehsud, Hakimullah Mehsud, said the attack was in retaliation against the recent strikes carried out on its hideouts.

Mehsud said the suicide attack has proved that the Taliban is not weakened by the military’s offensive against the banned organization.

The attack, which took place in the army barracks in Shaukat Lines, was the first of its kind in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK).

According to sources, the attack was carried out by a bearded man supposedly in his twenties.

The attacker entered the barracks used by non-commissioned security personnel and blew himself up around 6.30 in the morning.

“The bomber was intercepted by a soldier whom he tried to engage in a conversation presumably to attract other soldiers around for causing maximum casualties’ and then blew himself up,” The Dawn quoted an official, as saying.

The blast was so powerful that it destroyed several army vehicles parked near by.

Meanwhile, the authorities have tightened security across the region and are conducting massive search operations.

In a latest development, the Muzaffarabad police arrested more than five dozen Afghan nationals, and other people belonging to the Frontier province.

Sources said all those who have nabbed by the police lacked proper identification documents. (ANI)

PCB opposes sending invitation to Musharraf, Aziz for ICC T20 final

London, June 21 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has opposed inviting former President General Pervez Musharaf and Prime Minister Sahukat Aziz to the final of the ICC World Twenty20 Championship to be played here today.

According to sources, the former PCB chief Nasim Ashraf has asked the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to invite Musharraf and Aziz for the final match of the tournament to be played between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

However, the ECB rejected Ashraf’s request, as the present PCB chief Ijaz Butt advised against sending invitations to the former leaders.

“The ECB is sending a written note to the Pakistan Cricket Board informing the board that it was purely on the intervention of Ejaz Butt that it has declined to invite Musharraf and Shaukat,” The Dawn quoted P. J. Mir, a television talk show host, as saying.

When enquired about the issue, Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Britain, Wajid Shamsul Hasan, denied to comment saying he too has not received any invitation for the final match.

Hasan, however, said that he has been informed that his invitation was on its way.

“It is only today that I learnt that an invitation is on its way,” he said. (ANI)

Major part of remittances into Pak illegal, admits financial Advisor

Islamabad, May 20 (ANI): The Financial Advisor to Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, Shaukat Tarin, has admitted that illegal channels majorly contribute to the inflow of remittances into the country.

Talking to media persons at the launch of the World Bank’s (WB) report on ‘Bringing finance to Pakistan’s poor’, Tarin said that a large part of the transfer of funds which takes place in the country is illegal.

Acknowledging the WB report, Tarin said the informal supply occurs through the organized hawala sector and through committees, shopkeepers, moneylenders and transfers through friends and family.

According to the WB report, unofficial estimates of remittances to Pakistan are around 16 billion dollars.

Tarin also informed that the federal budget for the 2009-10 would be tabled in the first half of June. (ANI)

The16 ‘mysterious’ but ‘entitled’ persons using billion rupee bullet-proof Merc’s in Pak !

Islamabad, Apr.21 (ANI): The Shaukat Aziz Government in Pakistan had purchased 28 bullet-proof Mercedez Benz cars to be used by officials who were entitled for using a bullet-proof vehicle, while the government has the list of 18 persons who are currently using the vehicles, strangely enough it has no details of the remaining 16 persons who have these luxurious vehicles at their disposal.

According to The News, despite several queries the Cabinet Division which maintains the central pools of these cars, has not released the names of the officials who are using the vehicles.

A report has revealed that these 16 vehicles are being used by Cabinet Division’s own officers for official and general duty.

However, Cabinet Division Secretary Zafar Mahmood has denied that any of his officers were using the cars.

“No officer of the ministry is allowed to use Mercedes Benz at any cost, what to talk of bullet-proof cars .The official document you have, may have contained some serious printing mistakes,” Mahmood told the newspaper.

“I will check the list and then tell you that who is using these cars,” he added.

As of now the list of 18 persons, about which the Lower House has information, using the bullet-proof cars include names of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira, Defence Minister Ahmed Mukhtar and others.

Interestingly, the documents procured by the newspaper mentions that the officials who are using the Merc are ‘entitled’ to do so, but according to the law of the country even the federal secretary or a minister is not entitled to drive an official bullet-proof Mercedes unless approved by the Prime Minister.

It may be noted that Prime Minister himself was sentenced to seven years jail term by a NAB court for misusing one of such vehicle when he was Speaker of the National Assembly from 1993 to 1996. (ANI)

Swat flogging eyewitness refutes Taliban’s conspiracy theory

Mingora (Pakistan): The man who captured the Taliban publicly flogging a teenage girl on his mobile phone has refuted the outlawed outfit’s claim that the video was months old, and that it was a conspiracy against it, saying that the barbaric incident took place only two weeks ago.

The only eyewitness of the incident named Shaukat, for the first time since the release of the video, appeared before media explaining the reality behind it.

Shaukat said the Taliban actually punished the 17 year girl following her refusal of a marriage proposal.

“The man who proposed to marry her joined the ranks of the Taliban after the rejection and this was how he took his revenge from the 17-year-old girl,” The Dawn quoted Shaukat, as saying.

When enquired as why any of the onlookers did not raise voices against the act, Shaukat said that the Taliban’s fear had been thoroughly engrained in the Swat Valley, and no one could dare defy their law.

“People in Swat are so scared that no one has the courage to stand up and speak out against the Taliban and their verdicts,” he added. (ANI)

Centuries old mosque in Srinagar gets a face lift

Srinagar, Mar 15 (ANI): Renovation work at the centuries old Mosque of Akhund Mulla (also referred as Akhoon Mulla) at Srinagar in Kashmir is underway to restore the old grandeur of the monument.

The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) has taken the responsibility to restore life in the much-neglected heritage.

Akhund Mulla is said to be a mosque within a mosque. The main sanctuary is a separate and detached building, placed within a courtyard surrounding the mosque.

Built in Circa 1049 by Dara Shikoh, son of the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, to honour his tutor Akhun Mulla Shah, the little mosque is a grey limestone structure, located just below the Makhdum Sahib mosque.

The stone lotus erected over the podium is the only model of its type existing in Kashmir and has an inscription dated back to 1649.

The main feature of the mosque is the specially constructed prayer chamber. This mosque had also Islamic library, Hostel facilities and Hamam (Royal bathroom).

“It is a very big project that we have undertaken. The monument is very big, very old and in a very bad state. But thankfully, it can be restored. We would restore it in a manner that the historical significance is maintained,” said Saleem Beig, INTACH head of Kashmir.

Even the locals feel that attention should be paid to such monuments, which are a reflection of the heritage and culture of the region.

The Kashmiri students as well as students from across the country at the time of emperor Shah Jahan used to come to Kashmir for Islamic studies.

“It feels really sad when we see this kind of degradation taking place. No one is paying any attention to these monuments. The government says a lot but what is required is that work should also be done. Monuments like this are our heritage,” said Mohammad Sayed, a local resident.

With the INTACH taking this project, the locals of the area have hailed this decision. By Shaukat Jan (ANI)

Suicide bomber kills 32 Shias in Pakistan

Lahore, Feb 6 (ANI): At least 32 people were killed in a suspected suicide bombing at Dera Gazi Khan mosque on Thursday.

Police said the blast-targeted dozens of Shias who had converged at the Al Hussainia Mosque after dark, shortly before a prayer meeting.

Although there was no immediate claim of responsibility, police were swift to blame sectarian extremists for the tragedy.

“Ninety-nine percent it looks like a suicide attack,” Shaukat Javed, Inspector General of Punjab Police, said.

“The explosion occurred just 50 feet short of the mosque. It is a terrorist attack aimed at Shias to create unrest. It seems like a suicide blast. If something is planted or hurled, it leaves a crater. There is no crater at the site of the incident,” Javed said.

“According to eyewitnesses, nothing was thrown from outside,” district government official Jawed Mehmood Bhatti told a foreign news agency.

“It looks as if someone was standing at the site of the blast and waiting for the procession and he blew himself up as the procession came close to him,” he added.

About 200 people had arrived to attend the religious gathering. District health official Dr Fazal Karim confirmed that 13 bodies were brought to the local hospital including those of two children and a woman, but said he did not know how many dead may have been counted elsewhere, the Daily Times reported.

Rescue workers were seen trying to clear a crowd out of the way to let ambulances pass in darkness, in footage broadcast by television channels.

“The initial report is that it was a suicide bomber. He exploded himself in the crowd. Body parts have been found and sent to the hospital,” district police chief Athar Mubarik told reporters.

“The attacker was wearing a jacket carrying 12 to 14 kilogrammes of explosives,” he added. (ANI)

Zardari seeks help from foreign envoys to stop US drone attacks

Islamabad, Jan 28 (ANI): President Asif Ali Zardari has sought the diplomatic community’s help to stop the United States from carrying out drone attacks on al Qaeda militants in Pakistan’s Tribal Areas bordering Afghanistan.

Speaking at a dinner hosted for foreign ambassadors on Tuesday, Zardari said Pakistan had joined the anti-terror war for its own security, but the US drone attacks were proving detrimental to its efforts.

Besides French, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese and Russian ambassadors, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Interior Adviser Rehman Malik and Finance Adviser Shaukat Tareen also attended the dinner, the Daily Times reported.

Meanwhile, suspected US drones flew over various areas of North Waziristan Agency on Tuesday, a private TV channel reported.

According to the channel, the pilotless aircraft made three to four flights over various parts of the agency, spreading panic among the tribesmen who are already concerned over the growing missile strikes in the Tribal Areas.

Islamabad’s hopes from the Obama Administration to stop drone strikes were dashed when two missile attacks in Waziristan killed 18 people on Friday in the first strike after the new US president’s inauguration. (ANI)

PPP Govt. admits writing letter to IMF praising Musharraf’s policies

Islamabad, Jan 27 (ANI): The Pakistan Government has finally conceded that it had written a letter to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), but was in denial mode that no memorandum highlighting the economic achievements made during former President Pervez Musharraf’s days had been attached to it.

The Leader of the House in the Senate, Raza Rabbani, who had informed the house on Friday that the government had not written any letter to the IMF, slightly changed his position on Monday by accepting that a letter of intent had been written by Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance Shaukat Tarin, but said there was no attachment with it.

Senator Tariq Azim of PML-Q on this provided a copy of the letter and attached Memorandum on economic and financial policies (MEFP).

Terming the matter as ‘too serious’, Senator Azim asked the chair to direct Adviser on Finance Shaukat Tareen to explain the situation, the Dawn reported.

He pointed out that the very second paragraph of the letter of intent written to the IMF seeking a loan of 7.6 billion dollars makes it clear that a memorandum on economic and financial policies is attached to it.

To add to the embarrassment for the government, Senator Nisar A Meomn of PML-Q told the House that the copies of the letter and the attached memorandum had been distributed among the members of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance last month.

The memorandum describing recent economic developments reads ‘The country’s real GDP increased from 60 billion in 2000-01 to 170 billion dollars in 2007-2008, with per capita income rising from under 500 dollars to over 1000 dollars’.

The memorandum, indirectly praising economic policies of Musharraf regime, said: “This strong macroeconomic performance resulted from the implementation of a series of important structural reforms.”

“In early 2000s, with financial support from international financial institutions, including the IMF, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, the government expanded the role of markets in the economy, privatised a number of large-state-owned enterprises, established market-based regulatory bodies, and took steps to reduce the cost of doing business in Pakistan,” it said’ (ANI)

US withheld 55 million dollars payment to Pak from ‘terror war’ bill

Islamabad, Jan 27 (ANI): The United States has withheld 55 million dollars under its reimbursement programme for expenses incurred by Pakistan on the war on terror after American auditors raised objections.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s Finance Adviser Shaukat Tarin said here that the Pakistan Government would re-submit a case for the release of the amount, which has already been spent from its resources against the war on terror.

Talking to reporters after attending the launching ceremony of the code of conduct for members of the Pakistan Micro-financing Network, he said that after the deduction Islamabad received 101 million dollars from the US under the head.

Tarin said the country’s balance of payment position would improve after a loan of 700 million dollars from donors was received by the end of March.

He said the country would get 500 million dollars from the World Bank in February and another 200 million dollars from the Asian Development Bank. Pakistan has recently received loan of 500 million dollars from China and 100 million dollars from the ADB.

He said the fiscal deficit had dropped to 1.9 per cent of the GDP against the target of two per cent fixed for the first half of the current fiscal year.

Answering a question, he said that under an agreement with the International Monetary Fund, Pakistan was bound to eliminate subsidy on electricity by the end of June this year.

However, he said the government would make a nominal increase in power tariff before the next fiscal year.

Tarin said the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority had in November last year allowed an increase of 62 per cent in tariff and about 18 per cent increase had already been passed on to consumers. (ANI)
