After World 20-20 exit, Dhoni says players must respect their bodies to deliver for India

Gros Islet (St. Lucia, West Indies), May 12 (ANI): Having been shown the door from the World Twenty20 Cup by Sri Lanka on Tuesday, Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, copping criticism from all and sundry, said players turning out for India, needed to respect their bodies and be smart about playing in late night games such as the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Admitting that his side was tired after playing in the IPL and the World Twenty20 Cup within a gap of a few days, he said that was the reality of being an Indian cricketer. He said his side didn”t play to its potential, losing all their Super Eight matches, yet he found nothing wrong in either the IPL or the scheduling.

Speaking after Sri Lanka had handed India a five-wicket defeat, Dhoni said: “Players need to be smart because IPL is not only about cricket. You have to respect your body, and if you don”t do that, the IPL is draining.”

He also candidly admitted that his team had failed in all departments of the game, but added that it had not come to the West Indies to lose.

Former cricketer Ravi Shastri, who is in the West Indies as a commentator and expert, said the Indian team had failed tactically and was Dhoni’s worst performance as skipper. Another veteran Madan Lal said Dhoni and his team were simply making excuses for what was a very bad performance.

Former Indian opener and national team coach Anshuman Gaekwad said the team came up short in all departments of the game, as also in strategy.

Former Indian middle-order batsman Sanjay Manjrekar said: “It is only natural for people to say that the IPL tired the Indian players and once again after an IPL season India hasn”t played well in an IPL tournament.”

“The two critical games that India lost against Australia and West Indies were purely because the top-order batsmen couldn”t cop with the short deliveries. That cannot be attributed to the IPL. It is a technical weakness they have,” he added.

“The IPL could have been a contributing factor, but I think this performance has to do with the basics of some of the top-order batsmen. I would not hold the IPL as responsible as some of the technical frailties of the top-order batsmen have remained unaddressed,” he said.

Sri Lanka’s defeat of India allows it to go through to the semi-finals.

For the record, India made 163, but the target for the Sri Lankans was 143. They got there with the help of contributions from skipper Kumar Sangakkara, opening bat Tillakaratne Dilshan, all-rounder Angelo Mathew and batsman Chamara Kapugedara.

Kumar Sangakkara and Angelo Mathews made 46 each, Dilshan scored 33, while Kapugedara got 37.

For India, Suresh Raina hammered 63 from 47 balls with seven fours and a six while opener Gautam Gambhir made 41 off 32 balls. Debutant pacer Vinay Kumar claimed two wickets for 30 runs.

For Sri Lanka, fast bowler Lasith Malinga and Thilan Thushara claimed two wickets each while Thissara Perera took a wicket. (ANI)

BCCI appoints 3-member team to oversee IPL functioning

Mumbai, Apr 26 (ANI): The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday appointed a three-member committee to oversee the functioning of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The members of the committee are former cricketers Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi.

BCCI President Shashank Manohar on Monday said the Board was unhappy with former IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi”s explanation and would probe the missing IPL-3 bidding files.

“BCCI looked into charges against Modi. We are not happy with Modi”s explanation,” said Manohar.

Manohar, however, said that Modi would be given a chance if his reply was satisfactory.

“If Modi”s reply is satisfactory, we may reconsider him,” said Manohar.

“Modi will have to reply to the show cause, we will wait till his reply,” he added.

The BCCI President further said the documents related to IPL team Rajasthan Royals are missing.

“In the available document of Rajasthan Royals, there is no mention of Raj Kundra or Shilpa Shetty,” he added.

After the two -hour long IPL Governing Council meeting that took place at the BCCI headquarters here to find out the irregularities with regard to the bidding and the role of Lalit Modi in the entire episode, it was announced that BCCI Vice President and IPL Governing Council member Chirayu Amin would be the new interim IPL Commissioner.

Amin is the currently the President of the Baroda Cricket Association. He is also the BCCI Vice-President and IPL Governing Council member.

The BCCI has reportedly said that it will go public with all charges filed against Modi. (ANI)

School teacher gets 18 months’ jail for dowry demands

Chandigarh, March 15 (IANS) A local court here Monday sentenced a Sanskrit teacher in a Chandigarh government school and his parents to 18 months’ rigorous imprisonment for harassing his wife for dowry.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Anshul Berry found Dharminder Shastri and his parents Bhoop Singh and Chanderpatti guilty of harassing Anjala and sent them to jail.

According to the police, a case was filed against Shastri Jan 15, 2002, on the complaint filed by his wife. Shastri was then posted as a teacher of Sanskrit in the Government School of village Khuda Ali Sher in Chandigarh.

‘Anjala married with Shastri in December 1998. In her complaint, she alleged that just after a few days of the marriage, her husband and in-laws started harassing her to bring more dowry, including a television, a washing machine and cash,’ her counsel said.

Later, the case was handed over to police’s crime against women cell. Anjala was the second wife of Shastri as he had already married Simla Devi in February 1996.

Here’s how Zimbabwe’s blind cricket commentator Dean du Plessis bowls audiences

London, September 12 (ANI): He was born blind and has never seen a single match in his life, but has proved that all one requires to become a great cricket commentator is a mix of erudite descriptions of action, comprehensive knowledge of great players, faultless recall of statistics, and needle-sharp sense of timing and judgment.

Needless to say, Zimbabwean-born Dean du Plessis, 32, possesses all these attributes, and has been delivering commentaries on matches for nine years.

He has shared the commentary box in Tests, one-day, and Twenty20 tournaments involving all the Test-playing nations in worldwide radio broadcasts.

The commentators he has worked with include Tony Cozier, Geoffrey Boycott, Ravi Shastri, and Australia’s former spin bowler Bruce Yardley, who himself lost an eye.

In 2004, du Plessis and Yardley made the first ever team to deliver a commentary with a single eye between them.

It is du Plessis’s accentuated sense of hearing that makes up for being sightless.

He relies upon sounds heard via the stump microphones to tell who is bowling from the footfalls and grunts, a medium or fast delivery by the length of time between the bowler’s foot coming down, and the impact of the ball on the pitch.

He can tell whether a delivery was a yorker from the sound of the bat ramming down on the ball, whether a ball is on the off or on-side, and when it’s hit a pad rather than bat.

When the wicketkeeper’s voice goes flat, du Plessis tells him a draw is in the offing.

Though he can’t play the role in the commentary box of the anchor, du Plessis can tell from the crowd noise whether a ball has been gathered in a fielder’s hands or spilled.

“I have to work with the anchor. I am the guy who supplies, well, the colour,” Times Online quoted him as saying.

Andy Pycroft, the Zimbabwean opening batsman from 1979 to 2001, said: “The thing about Dean is the intuition. The public love to listen to him. If he has the right person at anchor to support him he is brilliant.”

Du Plessis hated the “blind cricket” he was taught to play with a plastic-wrapped volleyball at the blind school he attended.

At 14, while feeling bored one day, du Plessis tuned the radio in to a station devoted to ball-by-ball commentaries, and that was what was to change his life.

“There was a phenomenal noise in the background, 80,000 people in a stadium in India, people roaring. I realised it was cricket. I was fascinated,” du Plessis said.

He pushed his way into the commentary box at Harare Sports Club in 2001, and was allowed to try out with the microphone.

He never looked back. (ANI)

Rare vintage motorbikes displayed in Jaipur

Jaipur, May 26 (ANI): More than 80 rare motorbikes were displayed in Jaipur, the pink city of Rajasthan.

A ‘Vintage Bike Show’ was organised by the Convoy Bike Riders Club for the first time in the city, which is renowned for its rich cultural and architectural heritages.

Showcasing the best of the bygone era, the show provided a glimpse of the evolution of motorcycle in the last century as bikes as old as 1933 make ‘Parachute Bike.’

“A 1933 make ‘Parachute Bike’ is also participating in the show, which is the oldest bike in the show. This bike was used in military operations. Birju Singh, who is our convoy icon and a retired intelligence officer, is the owner of this bike. Another rare bike is the ‘Indian Aero’, which is owned by Abhijeet Singh, son of V. P. Singh, a lawmaker from Bhilwara. This is also the rarest of all bikes participating in the show,” said Upendra Shastri, the organiser of the Vintage Bike Show.

The bikes were classified into two categories viz. vintage models and classic models. These included BSA 612 cc (1942 model), Hand gear equipped James 1946 model, BSA G 1947 Model, Norman 1951 Model. Almost all models of Royal Enfield were displayed in the show.

Participants were delighted as they got a platform to exhibit their rare mechanical heritages.

“This is 1942 Indian. I think it is one of the rarest bikes not only for this show, but at world level. It is considered as one of the most sought after and rarest bikes. This is the army version and called as the ‘Poni 741′,” said Abhijeet Singh, a participant and proud member of the vintage bike owner’s fraternity.

The old world charm of these vintage beauties was like an everlasting experience, which matures and grows richer with time and becomes part of nostalgia.

The organisers plan to hold more such events in the near future, taking the rally to other cities as well. (ANI)

Security of govt buildings in Delhi to be upgraded

New Delhi, Apr 19 (PTI) As part of its efforts to tighten security in government installations, the Centre has decided to upgrade security of several buildings, which house key ministries. New sentry posts at entry and exit points will be erected, while existing posts will be reinforced and additional Quick Reaction Teams will be deployed in the vicinity of these high value premises under the new security plan, a senior government official said.

Currently, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) guards all the government buildings ranging from the South and North Blocks which house the PMO, key ministries like Defence, Home, Finance to other buildings like Nirman Bhavan and Shastri Bhavan. The force guards as many as 52 such installations in the national capital under the Government Building Security (GBS) wing for access control, security check and emergency control with the help of QRTs stationed nearby in case of emergencies.

The Central Public Works Department provides the security men with the infrastructure. Under the new plan, equipment for fire safety and disaster mitigation will also be placed at the disposal of the security personnel, the official said.

Advani has raised black money issue to alert his people’

Bhopal, April 20 (IANS) Congress leader and former union minister Anil Shastri Monday claimed that by raising the issue of black money stacked in foreign banks, Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) prime ministerial aspirant L.K. Advani has alerted his own people so that they can shift their money from these banks.

Talking to reporters here, Shastri said: ‘Since Advani knows well that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was not coming to power after these elections, he has cautioned his people to withdraw money from Swiss banks by the time the next United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government assumed power at the centre.’

Alleging that the state administration under the control of the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh was harassing the Congress candidates in several constituencies, Shastri said that his party will put the issue before the Election Commission.

Shastri also claimed that the Congress would get more than 200 seats on its own in the Lok Sabha polls and Manmohan Singh would once again become the prime minister.

Shastri said that the party was not banking on the achievements of the Congress-led UPA government alone. He said the clean image of Manmohan Singh besides the signing of the landmark nuclear deal with the US would also pay dividends in the general elections.

Refuting the charge of Advani that Manmohan Singh was a ‘weak prime minister’, Shastri said: ‘Dr Singh is one of the strongest prime ministers the country has ever had and he had proven himself as a strong prime minister by signing the nuclear deal with the US despite all odds.’

The Congress leader said that the UPA government had provided 27 percent reservation to the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and his party would also implement reservation in the private sector besides getting the the Women’s Reservation Bill through after resuming power at the centre.

Shastri also attributed Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Prasad’s comments on the alleged involvement of the Congress in demolishing the disputed structure at Ayodhya to his (Lalu Prasad’s) party losing base in Bihar.

‘Lalu did not comment on it for the last five years and now he has raised the issue only to extract political mileage,’ Shastri said.

Sonia should apologise: Advani

Thiruvanthapuram, Apr 13 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L K Advani on Monday asked Congress President Sonia Gandhi to apologise for her critical remarks on the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in a recent election meeting in Jharkhand.

Addressing a press conference here, Advani said that he was shocked to hear Gandhi’s statement that, “we are in greater danger from people inside than from foreign terrorists entering India”.

Although Sonia Gandhi did not particularly mention a party’s name, Advani said it “substantially accuses us and the comments were clear”.

Accusing Gandhi of having meagre knowledge about her own party’s history, Advani asserted that there has been a tradition in India of leaders appreciating the role of Jan Sangh in the nation’s development.

He claimed that even during 1962 and 1965 wars, then Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Lal Bahadur Shastri had praised the role of Jan Sangh and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

He said that a rare exception was made in 1963 when Nehru asked the RSS to send a contingent for the Republic Day parade.

“Obviously, she does not know the history of her own party. She makes a statement of this kind. This is slander. She should apologise for this statement or join a debate on fundamentalist issues like Al Qaeda,” said Advani.

Expressing regret on the disintegrating war of words before the elections, Advani said that it was clear that the prime fight was between the BJP-led NDA and the Congress-led UPA.

“The so-called Third and Fourth Fronts were irrelevant as they were opportunists, who had no platform on their own or a common platform. The CPI(M) was trying to cobble a Third Front only to fight its own growing irrelevance,” he said. (ANI)

Now ’99′ too defies strike, gets set to arrive on 1st May

While bigger producers are battling it out for equal rights with multiplexes and refraining from releasing any new films, relatively smaller producers have a different take on the situation. While this Friday saw the arrival of as many as six films – TERA MERA KI RISHTA, EK SE BURE DO, COFFEE HOUSE, PAL PAL DIL KE SAATH, SCHOOL DAYS and ROYAL UTSAV, even in weeks to come there would be something or other trickling in at theaters. One such film which has made it’s plans quite clear in advance is ’99′ which is certainly arriving on 1st May.

Says a source attached to the film, “The response to the theatrical promo of ’99′ has been amazing and we have all the plans for reaching out to the audience. We have kick started promotion on quite a few popular Bollywood portals and social networking sites. The promo has come in for quite some good feedback and movie buffs have been appreciating the super slick, fast-paced and funny feel of this comic thriller.”

Produced by Anupam Mittal and Aditya Shastri of People Pictures, ’99′ is directed by debutants Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK and promises to be an original concoction of crime, comedy and coolness.

“Ours is an original story inspired by real events between 1999 and 2000″, says Krishna, “It is as much “what could have been” as it is “what really happened.” In other words, it is historical and #64257; ction. It may all sound a little tricky on paper but the treatment has been kept simple enough for audience to grasp the film’s graph. You would know exactly what we have tried to get into the narrative once you see the film.”

Starring Kunal Khemu and Soha Ali Khan in lead with Cyrus Broacha and Simone Singh playing an integral part of the film, ’99′ is touted to be an unpredictable and hilarious ride spread over two cities with colorful characters, unbelievable circumstances, small time crooks, big time conspiracies, fateful car crashes, loads of coffee, a briefcase full of money, a budding romance and a historical controversy brewing in the background!

All set to arrive now on 1st May, the film also features the trio of Boman Irani, Mahesh Manjrekar, and Vinod Khanna in important parts. -Sampurn Media

Criminals in Pajero rob biker of Rs 2.5 lakh

How does it feel to be robbed? Bad. How does it feel when the robbers use a swanky sports utility vehicle (SUV) to commit the crime? Worse.

Especially if you are the victim riding a 125cc bike. Meet Praveen Kumar, the hapless collection agent for a plywood showroom.

Kumar was robbed of Rs 2.5 lakhs by a group of robbers, travelling in a Mitsubishi Pajero, in Pandav Nagar on Tuesday night. The incident took place around 9.30 p.

m. near Akshardham flyover as Kumar was returning home after collecting money from Noida.

The showroom’s manager reported the incident to the police. Kumar had reportedly called up the manager from a phone booth after the incident.

The police said Kumar was on his way to his Shastri Nagar residence on a motorcycle when the incident took place. “Kumar told us that a Pajero overtook his bike and then stopped right in front of him.

Kumar did not know what was going on until two men stepped out of the SUV and tried to snatch his bag that contained Rs 2.5 lakh. When Kumar resisted, the two robbers allegedly attacked him before escaping from the spot with the bag,” a senior police officer said.

The police also said the assailants took away Kumar’s mobile phone and the keys of the bike. “We believe it was the work of an insider.

Our initial investigations have revealed Kumar was being followed from Noida itself. We are also looking into the fact that the robbers were using a Mitsubishi Pajero.

We will look into the details of all registered Pajeros to ascertain if such a vehicle has been stolen,” the police officer said. A case has been registered against the unknown robbers on the basis of the complaint lodged by the victim.

Teams have also been formed to launch a manhunt to nab the culprits.
