Strasburg sharp in 8-1 romp over Giants

(Reuters) – Stephen Strasburg returned to form and won his first game in nearly a month with the aid of a pair of Adam Dunn home runs as the Washington Nationals cruised to an 8-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Friday.

Strasburg improved to 3-2 with his first win since June 13, having endured a pair of losses and three no-decisions since overpowering the Cleveland Indians in a 9-4 victory.

After giving up a leadoff home run to Andres Torres in the first inning, Strasburg allowed just two more hits and a walk, while striking out eight in six innings.

“After that I was like, ‘You know what, bottom line, if they’re going to beat me, they’re going to beat me. Me calling my own game’,” Strasburg told reporters. “I just put it all on my shoulders.”

Dunn was three-for-four with three RBIs and three runs scored. His solo home run in the third inning broke a 1-1 tie, and his two-run blast in the seventh was part of a four-run inning that put the game out of reach for San Francisco.

“I think every hitter, especially every power hitter, goes through a stretch where they hit home runs,” said Dunn. “That’s kind of what’s happening right now.”

After falling behind in the top of the first the Nationals countered with a run in the bottom of the inning, capitalizing on a throwing error by pitcher Matt Cain on an attempted pickoff at second base.

Washington added two more runs in the sixth.

Giants starter Matt Cain (6-8) gave up 11 hits in over six innings, allowing all eight runs while striking out six and walking three.

Heat wave continues unabated in North India

New Delhi/ Ahmedabad, May 15 (ANI): Various parts of the Country continue to reel under intense heat wave following the mercury shooting beyond the normal temperatures as on Saturday.

With the mercury hovering above the 45-degrees Celsius mark, tourists visiting New Delhi are having a tough time in the sizzling heat.

“Delhi is hotter than Patna but as we have come here to spend our vacation, we have to go out to enjoy the place…we have been carrying water and other liquid items so that we can give it to the children at regular intervals,” said Shaheen, a tourist from Patna.
Meanwhile, at Ahmedabad, locals were seen moving around with their faces covered to avoid the heat.

Ahmedabad saw a sharp rise in the maximum temperature and reportedly it was beyond 45 degrees mark.

“The weather is too hot. Earlier I used to leave for my office at around 10.30 in the morning but now I have started reaching office at around 9.30 so that I can avoid the extreme heat,” said Avinashbhai, a resident.

As per media reports, at least 30 persons have succumbed to heat across the country this year.

Temperatures usually go up to mid-forties at many places in northern India.

Usually, till the onset of the monsoon, the months of May-June are the hottest in the country with the temperatures hovering in the range of 40 to 45 degrees Celsius in several regions.

However, this year, the people were startled at the mercury shooting beyond the 40 degrees mark in the month of April itself. (ANI)

Russia may slap 8.5 pct export duty on potash

MOSCOW, April 14 (Reuters) – Russia’s anti-monopoly agency will support proposals to introduce a 8.5 percent export duty on potash, its head Igor Artemyev told reporters on Wednesday.

“We are supporting the proposal by the customs service… We have supported it because Uralkali and Silvinit have begun a speedy increase of prices on the domestic market,” he said adding that the final decision would be taken by a commission of first deputy prime minister Igor Shuvalov.

Industry sources have told various media in the past month the government could introduce duties of between 5 and 15 percent in comments leading to sharp fluctuations of potash producers Uralkali (URKA.MM) and Silvinit (SILV.RTS).

Uralkali’s stock fell by around one percentage point on the news on Wednesday to trade 0.5 percent down at 0759 GMT. (Reporting by Vladimir Soldatkin, writing by Dmitry Zhdannikov, Editing by Toni Vorobyova)

Sharp jump in SA jobless rate

South Australia’s unemployment rate has jumped from 4.8 per cent to 5.4 per cent in the latest month, seasonally-adjusted.

The number of people looking for work in SA remained steady during March.

SA’s rate is just above the national jobless figure of 5.3 per cent.

SA Employment Minister Jack Snelling is unsure what has caused the jump.

“Could be any number factors, it being March, it could be a bit of a monthly aberration but really what we need to look at is the underlying trend figures and the underlying trend figures show that the economy under the stewardship of the Rann Government is ticking along very well,” he said.

Opposition employment spokesman David Pisoni says the SA job figures make a mockery of the Premier’s promise to create jobs.

“Mike Rann promised 100,000 jobs over six years. This is a bad start,” he said.

“We’ve seen 5,000 fewer people in the workforce since the last figures came out.

“We’re going backward, not forwards.”

Washington, Sep 7 (ANI): American socialite Kourtney Kardashian has revealed that she is suffering from such terrible mood swings ever since her pregnancy that her boyfriend Scott Disick is terrified of her.

“Scott keeps getting scared. But he’s been great with my mood swings so far. He’s like, ‘Just take a deep breath,’” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

“He heard that with the last three months of a pregnancy you have really extreme mood swings so he was joking, ‘Oh, you’re not going to believe the mood swings!’” she said.

But it is not only her partner who has been getting the sharp end of her tongue, her family, including sisters Kim and Khloe and mother Kris, have also been suffering.

“If I’m just trying to pick a fight with someone and if I’m around Scott or my mom, then they’ll probably get it worst,” she told People magazine.

“If someone is annoying me – usually my mom – I’ll call Khloe and it’ll make me feel better because she’ll agree with me.

“I throw b***h fits. The other day, I was like, ‘This house is such a mess! Now that Scott’s living in my house, there’s stuff everywhere! We need to get it organised!’ Everything I had to do, I blamed it on Scott,” she added. (ANI)

Excessive heat takes toll on pear crop in Punjab

Abohar (Punjab), May 27 (ANI): Farmers in Abohar in Punjab suffered huge losses as their pear crop has been damaged due to excessive heat this summer.

The cultivation of pears has been affected the morale of the farmers.

Sharp rise in temperature in the region has destroyed not only the crops, but also affected the soil.

Mites are affecting the cultivation of pears spread in 200 acres of the region.

The farmers fear that if such conditions prevail for long it would affect other crops as well.

“The affect would be on the variety of pears that we usually produce. Due to the heat, the production of pears has been reduced. If rain comes, we would put fertilisers to the plant so that it comes out better,” said krishna dogra, a farmer.

Experts say that the pear crop requires ample rains during April and May. But due to the lack of rain this season, the crop has been affected badly.

“We also have farm houses. But in farmhouses, we have wind break installed.

But mostly in other regions they don’t have wind break installed. Therefore, the percentage affected would be 20 to 30 percentage of production,” said Professor Pushpinder Singh, Director Punjab Agriculture University, Regional Centre, Abohar.

The producers of the crop say that they tried to save the crops by spraying chemicals and other facilities but it failed.

Singapore’s manufacturing output rebounds in April

Singapore – Singapore said Tuesday its manufacturing output in April declined more slowly than in the months before thanks to a sharp turnaround in the biomedical industry.

Compared to a year ago, total manufacturing output in April posted a dip of 0.5 per cent, after it had plunged a hefty 32.8 per cent in March, the Economic Development Board said.

April was the seventh straight month of decline in total output.

However, the slight fall in April was the best performance since September 2008 when the city-state’s industrial output rose 3.3 per cent.

The turnaround was largely due to a jump in industrial output of biomedicals, which expanded by 68.4 per cent year-on-year in April 2009, the board said.

Singapore’s total manufacturing output rose 24.7 per cent in April on a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, following a plunge by 15.1 per cent a month earlier. (dpa)

Mark Ronson says wearing fur is like wearing a pet dog

New Delhi, May 8 (ANI): Music mogul Marc Ronson has declared that wearing fur is no different from wearing a beloved dog.

The star, who has been named the best-dressed man by GQ magazine, recently posed with his pet pooch in a PETA advert with a tagline “If You Wouldn’t Wear Your Dog, Please Don’t Wear Any Fur”.

The anti-fur campaign was organized by Peta2, the youth arm of the animal rights group, reports the China Daily.

“The only difference between our ‘best friends’ and animals killed for their fur is how we treat them,” PETA Europe Director Robbie LeBlanc said.

“No one knows that better than a sharp dresser like Mark Ronson. With all the fashionable alternatives available, there’s absolutely no excuse for wearing fur,” Robbie added. (ANI)

Tokyo – Sharp Corp incurred a net loss for fiscal 2008 after the company introduced inventory control, cost-reduction measures and structural reforms, it said Monday.
