Boffins find mystery seafaring ancestor in the Philippines

London, June 04 (ANI): Anthropologists have discovered a foot bone during an excavation of Callao cave in Luzon, which has led to researchers’ claim that humans reached the islands off south-east Asia at least tens of thousands of years earlier than previously thought.

Armand Mijares of the University of the Philippines Diliman, and his colleagues insist the bone is definitely human, and they are provisionally calling it a lightly built modern human.

Mijares pointed out that its shape was unusual, and its size fell within the ranges of Homo habilis and Homo floresiensis.

It suggests that humans arrived on Luzon, the largest and northernmost major island in the Philippines, at least 67,000 years ago.

“The arrival of people in Australia 50,000 to 60,000 years ago is a good comparison,” New Scientist quoted expedition member Florent Detroit of the National Museum for Natural History in Paris, France, as saying.

“It seems coherent for us to think that in; south-east Asia and Australia, humans had sea-faring capabilities by 60,000 to 70,000 years ago.” (ANI)

Can Bafana Bafana keep host streak alive?

Johannesburg, May 26 (DPA) Every host nation of the previous 18 World Cups has advanced past the first round. That streak is in serious peril as South Africa face a paramount task of even gathering a point at the 2010 World Cup.

Bafana Bafana have one of the most successful coaches in World Cup history in Brazilian Carlos Albert Parreira, Brazil’s 1994 cup-winning coach who is at the World Cup for the sixth time with his fifth different nation.

The South Africans also have upwards of 70,000 fans tooting vuvuzelas live in the stadium at each game as well as tens of millions rooting for them on the streets and in their homes.

But, unfortunately they also face the daunting Group A with matches against World Cup veterans such as Mexico, two-time world champions Uruguay and 1998 winners and 2006 finalists France.

‘This group is very tough. By chance, the first World Cup was played 80 years ago in Uruguay. And Uruguay, Mexico and France all played in it… So they are in the business for 80 years. People forget about this sometimes,’ said Parreira.

‘Of course the World Cup means a lot. We have a big responsibility for the country. The country who hosts the World Cup always wants to do well. I am not thinking about what happens if the team doesn’t advance from the first round. I’m not going to place this on my players’ shoulders. This (a host nation not reaching the second stage) will happen one day. We just have to do our best.’

Parreira did not have a qualifying campaign to get his team ready for the World Cup, putting them through a series of friendly matches instead. The 67-year-old Brazilian also held two extended training camps in Brazil and Germany in March and April with his South Africa-based players. His goal was to form the shape of the team and then his overseas players would fit in.

Parreira’s men have shown they have talent and can play competitive football when spurred on by the home crowd. At the 2009 Confederations Cup, they narrowly lost to Brazil in the semi-finals and to Spain in the game for third place.

The coach knows his team will be young and rather small and he will rely on a quick passing-oriented game, which he feels suits his players best.

The key to Bafana Bafana’s showing in South Africa 2010 may be the performance of the nation’s prize player Steven Pienaar of Everton, especially since the country’s most successful striker Benni McCarthy will come to the World Cup with a lack of game experience since he has been out of favour at West Ham United.

South Africa have a storied sports past, especially in rugby but also by winning the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations. But Bafana Bafana will have a hard time reaching the minimum goal of getting beyond the first round.

THE COACH – CARLOS ALBERTO PARREIRA

Apart from winning the 1994 World Cup with Brazil, Carlos Alberto Parreira is best remembered for being in charge of four different countries at the World Cup (Kuwait, 1982; United Arab Emirates, 1990; Brazil, 1994 and 2006; and Saudi Arabia, 1998). Only Bora Milutinovic has one more country in his resume.

The well-travelled 67-year-old coach, who has had stints in several Middle Eastern countries, as well as Turkey, came under criticism during his earlier tenure with the South African team and in April 2008 resigned, citing his wife’s health problems the reason.

He was brought back when the South African Football Association parted ways with his successor Joel Santana.

THE STAR – STEVEN PIENAAR

Steven Pienaar is probably as close as South Africa gets to having an international star. The 28-year-old Johannesburg-born midfielder is a regular in the Premier League with his club Everton and has been linked with a move to a bigger club.

He started playing for the School of Excellence before signing his first professional contract with Ajax Cape Town. After impressing for the Ajax Amsterdam feeder club, he was brought to the Netherlands, where he played an important part in helping the Dutch club win the league in 2002 and 2004.

A less spectacular move to Borussia Dortmund followed. He was then sent to Everton on loan, before making the move permanent.

‘Kirsten’s unfit’ Indian cricket team returns home

Mumbai, May 14 (ANI): The Indian cricket team, seven of whose members were declared “unfit” by coach Garry Kirsten, returned from its disastrous World Twenty20 campaign on Friday.

The team landed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport here after a 28-hour flight.

India, which had won the inaugural World T20 tournament in 2007, failed to win three of its Super Eight matches in this year”s tournament.

The performance has led to many questions being asked of skipper M S Dhoni and his teammates.

On Thursday, Kirsten, reportedly slammed his players for their poor fitness levels and lack of commitment.

He pointed out that even he was fitter than some of the players and gave the players a month’s time to shape up.

Kirsten also said the team was content to be number one in Tests and number two in ODIs, but had not shown enough commitment to scale the summit at the World T20.

Kirsten who has been coach of Team India since March 2008, would submit a report to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on the T20 World Cup performance. (ANI)

Daniel Radcliffe wants Cristiano Ronaldo’s six-pack!

London, May 11 (ANI): Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe wants a body just like soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo’s, it has emerged.

The actor, who has few shirtless scenes in musical ‘How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying,’ is apparently inspired by the Portugese footballer.

“Daniel wants to completely re-sculpt his body and has taken Ronaldo as his inspiration,” the Sun quoted a pal, as saying.

The friend added: “He envies his muscle definition and is hoping to get a similar six-pack for himself.

“Daniel is taking his fitness regime really seriously. He”s stopped drinking, knocked the fags on the head and is watching every mouthful.

“He put on a little timber last year and is keen to get down to a more svelte shape.

“He”s already lost nearly a stone in the past month.” (ANI)

Brit woman’s ‘naked candyman’ surprise

London, May 10 (ANI): A Brit woman was left in shock when she opened a bag of candy, only to find a two-inch pink sweet in the shape of a naked man holding his midget gems.

Lyz Parker, 23, found the naughty jelly candy in a bag of Candy King she got at Tesco Home Plus in Staines, Middlesex.

“When I opened the bag I screamed so loudly the whole office came running over. I couldn”t believe my eyes,” the Sun quoted her as saying.

Lyz, from Camberley, Surrey, called Candy King but at first they thought it was a prank call, but now they have launched an investigation in the issue.

“Clearly this is not part of Candy King”s assortment,” said the company.

Tesco added: “We expect better behaviour from our jelly sweets. We”ll raise it with the supplier.” (ANI)

Oz artist transforms model into guitar using body paint!

London, May 7 (ANI): An Australian artist has managed to turn a model into a guitar by using body paint.

Artist Emma Hack, 37, spent more than ten hours crafting the shape from the girl’s curves, and then toning the rest of her body to match the background.

“I started with the rays and the outline of the guitar. There were so many challenges,” the Sun quoted her as saying.

Hack, who started out as a kids’ face painter, and uses a favourite technique to paint people so they almost disappear into a wall or even a tyre, has shown her work all over the world.

The guitar image is to promote a festival in her hometown Adelaide. (ANI)

Daughter orders Bill Clinton to shed seven kilos ahead of her wedding

Melbourne, April 29 (ANI): Former U.S. President Bill Clinton’s daughter Chelsea has asked him to lose weight in time for her summer wedding.

Chelsea has apparently ordered dad Bill to shed seven kilos before her marriage.

While at a fiscal summit in Washington D.C. Bill was asked by moderator Bob Schieffer if he was in shape to handle giving away his only daughter.

“She doesn”t think I”m in shape to handle it,” News.com.au quoted Clinton as saying.

“You know, she told me the other day, she said ‘Dad the only thing you gotta do is walk me down the aisle and you need to look good,” he added.

“So I said ‘Well, what”s your definition?’ And she said ‘Oh, about 15 pounds.’ So I”m halfway home,” Clinton joked to laughter from the audience.

Chelsea is expected to wed Mezvinsky this summer on Martha’s Vineyard, an island off the coast of Massachusetts. (ANI)

Iran threatens suntanned women

Taking backward steps into orthodoxy against the weaker

sex has become institutionalised. As part of a new drive to enforce Islamic dress code, Iran has warned that suntanned women who looked like “walking mannequins” would be arrested.

Brig Hossien Sajedinia, Tehran’s police chief, said: “The public expects us to act firmly and swiftly if we see any social misbehaviour by women, and men, who defy our Islamic values.

“In some areas of north Tehran we can see many suntanned women and young girls who look like walking mannequins.

“We are not going to tolerate this situation and will first warn those found in this manner and then arrest and imprison them.”

Iran’s law insists on women wearing headscarves and shape shrouding cloaks but many women splash out a lot of money on fashions that barely adhere to the regulations, reports The Telegraph.

Was LSD an influence on Doctor Who?

LONDON (Reuters Life!) – The regenerations of Time Lord Doctor Who were modeled on the “horrifying” side effects of drug-induced trips, according to archived documents published by the BBC.

Lifestyle

Doctor Who, an eccentric TV hero who has fearlessly fought Daleks and Cybermen with the help of his Tardis time machine in the shape of a 1950s London police box, has become a classic figure since the show first aired in the 1960s.

The regenerations started in 1966 to allow writers to replace the lead actor. The series recently saw an 11th actor, Matt Smith, take on the role.

A BBC memo outlining the character describes his metaphysical change over the years as a “horrifying experience.”

“It as if he has had the L.S.D. drug and instead of experiencing the kicks, he has the hell and dank horror which can be its effect,” it says.

Greens attack port plan consultation

Greens’ MP Robin Chapple is accusing the Western Australian Government of a lack of consultation with community groups over a proposed port development in the Pilbara.

Last month, the Government announced it would contribute $3.5 million for the port at Anketell Point, 30 kilometres north-east of Karratha.

Residents and Indigenous groups have expressed concerns about the impact of the port on recreational activity and the environment.

Mr Chapple says it was a rushed decision.

“The Government [is] handing over … $3 million to develop literally on a whim, without the consultation of the wider community, the Ngarluma [people] or indeed even the shire,” he said.

“[The project] is just rammed through and not engaged with the community in any way shape or form.”

The Government has indicated it will discuss the project with the Ngarluma Aboriginal Corporation.

Vice-chancellor’s term extended

The vice-chancellor of the University of Canberra Stephen Parker will continue to lead the institution for the next five years.

Professor Parker’s contract was due to expire in 2012 but he will now stay on at least until 2015.

Chancellor Professor Ingrid Moses says she is pleased Professor Parker has agreed to the University’s offer.

“In the past three years the University, led by the vice-chancellor, has seen much needed change – in its academic program, its research orientation, its staffing profile, administrative arrangements and external engagements,” she said.

Professor Parker says he had to make some tough decisions when he started the job in 2007.

“It’s no secret that when I arrived I inherited some budget problems,” he said.

“We’ve pretty well sorted those out, and last year we ran a small surplus.

“I think we’ve got ourselves in shape, and we’re definitely going up in the world in terms of performance.”

He says there have been substantial improvements in student numbers and publications since he took over the job.

Student numbers grew by about 15 percent last year, with another 10 percent rise expected this year.

“We got data recently about publications per academic, and in 2008 we were tenth in the country for the number of publications per academic,” Professor Parker said.

“Now for a youngish university like ourselves that’s really, really, good.”

He says he wants to continue pushing improvements in the university’s performance.

“I’d like to see things through and see some of the long-term initiatives really come good,” he said.

“We’ve got to make sure we’re really attractive, offering courses in ways that students really want to take them, and we’ve also got to make sure our research is really strong, because that’s what builds an international reputation.”

White strawberry that tastes like pineapple set to hit UK stores!

London, Mar 31 (ANI): This year strawberries could be as white as the cream poured over them – courtesy a new berry that looks like a white strawberry but tastes like a pineapple.

The pineberry, costing 2.99-pound a punnet, is said to be a combination of the shape and texture of a strawberry with a flavour and smell closer to that of a pineapple.

Nicki Baggott, fruit buyer for Waitrose, which is launching the white fruit at selected UK stores, said the berries would add a surprising twist to desserts.

She added: “Pineberries offer our customers the chance to add a new fruit to their diet and the bright appearance can add an unusual decoration to sweet dishes.”

Grown in glasshouses, pineberries start off green, gradually turning paler as they ripen, reports The Daily Express.

By the time their seeds have turned a deep red colour the fruit is ripe enough to eat.

The pineberries are slightly smaller than the common strawberry. (ANI)
