I did not prepare Italy fully, says Lippi

(Reuters) – Italy coach Marcello Lippi took full responsibility for their humiliating World Cup group stage exit on Thursday although the players also accepted their share of the blame for a dreadful campaign.

Sports | Italy

The holders lost 3-2 to World Cup debutants Slovakia, who qualified for the last 16 with Paraguay from what had looked an easy-looking Group F for Italy.

“I take all responsibility. I haven’t prepared this team well enough,” an ashen-faced Lippi told a news conference without even being prompted by a question.

“I didn’t think we could win the World Cup but I though we would do better.”

In a strikingly honest assessment of what went wrong, Lippi pummeled himself verbally for 15 minutes.

“I failed to train the team well enough, they weren’t ready for such an important match. For an hour and 15 minutes, for psychological reasons I think, nothing worked,” he said.

The 62-year-old, a national hero when he led the Azzurri to 2006 World Cup glory, had already announced he would step down again after the finals. He will be replaced by Cesare Prandelli.

Lippi first quit straight after their triumph in Germany but returned in 2008 after Italy’s disappointing European Championship campaign under Roberto Donadoni.

“I don’t regret coming back, I came back with great enthusiasm,” he added.

His stark words took some of the sting out of the Italian reporters who were waiting to savage a campaign that began with two 1-1 draws.

“I have no intention of getting straight back into coaching and training after this,” added Lippi. “I’ll take some months off and we will see.”

At previous tournaments, Italy have often blamed controversial refereeing decisions for causing their exit but this time they all collectively hung their heads in shame.

“When we won the World Cup we all got given national medals of honor. Now they’ll give us medals of shame, which is right,” midfielder Gennaro Gattuso told reporters having played his last game for the Azzurri before international retirement.

“Italian football must examine its conscience. Tonight we have reached rock bottom,” he added.

Midfielder Andrea Pirlo, who said he would not quit Italy but feared a cycle had ended, echoed Gattuso’s views.

“We have done something shameful,” he said. “We haven’t won a game. It’s everyone’s fault.”

Rosberg apologises to frustrated Schumacher

Nico Rosberg apologised to a frustrated Michael Schumacher on Saturday after the seven times world champion complained he had been slowed by his Mercedes team mate in Monaco Grand Prix qualifying.

Rosberg was outqualified for the first time by the 41-year-old in Spain last weekend but turned the tables on his fellow German by taking sixth place on the starting grid for the season’s most glamorous race with Schumacher seventh.

“I have to say from my perspective that all of our colleagues drove very fairly. The only car that blocked me was my team mate,” Schumacher told television reporters after the session.

“It’s a shame but there you go. It happened in quali three (the third phase) when there were only 10 cars on the track.”

Rosberg, son of Finland’s 1982 world champion Keke, told reporters he had apologised for a situation that Mercedes said was their fault rather than the driver’s because they sent him out at the wrong time and the radio had failed as well.

“I feel extremely frustrated about today because we had a good car all weekend and as a team we didn’t perform well in Q3,” said team principal Ross Brawn.

“There was a problem with Nico’s car getting out of the garage,” he explained.

“The last thing we wanted was to have our two cars on the same piece of track… the plan was to split them but when we came to release Nico’s car we had a problem with releasing it. It left the garage 20 or 30 seconds later than we planned.

“So then we had both cars together and Nico was getting squeezed,” added Brawn. “I think Michael was annoyed after the second or third lap… when I explained to him what happened he was OK, just frustrated…. we cocked up.”

Schumacher, making his comeback after three years in retirement, has won five times in Monaco and a sixth win would equal the record of the late Brazilian Ayrton Senna.

“I don’t think it would have been my quickest lap time anyway but it would have been a banker and that was my aim — to put a banker in and then go obviously full attack for the last lap,” said Schumacher of the incident.

Sophie Turner says her ‘real’ butt is pure Oz goodness compared to Kim Kardashian’s

Melbourne, May 11 (ANI): Actress/supermodel Sophie Turner has said that her bottom is real and pure Australian goodness when compared to socialite Kim Kardashian’s.

Turner, 26, who calls herself as the ‘Saucy Aussie’, was complimented on her backside and how it put Kardashian’s celebrated well-endowed rump to shame.

“Mine’s real! Its pure Aussie goodness,” the Daily Telegraph quoted her as replying.

The model was the winner of Channel 10’s Search For A Supermodel in 2001, and secured a 250,000-dollar modelling contract with the prestigious Ford Models. (ANI)

Exclusion of Pakistani cricketers from IPL-3 was premeditated: Razzaq

Islamabad, May 3 (ANI): The exclusion of Pakistani cricketers from this year’s Indian Premier League tournament was a premeditated plan, according to all rounder Abdul Razzaq.

Razzaq pointed to his own example as proof that the franchises were under instructions not to bid on any Pakistani players.

“I signed a contract with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in August 2009 so I was already signed up to an IPL team before the 2010 IPL auction took place,” Cricistan.com quoted Razzaq, as saying.

The presence was Pakistani all rounder in the IPL-3 was problematic for those who wanted to ensure that no players from Pakistan took part.

Razzaq was already under contract and they needed to find a way around this. So they convinced him to relinquish his contract with Kolkata and submit his name for the auction, the website reports.

“I had already signed for Kolkata but they told me they wanted to add my name to the auction list. They said that I would be worth a lot more at auction than my current contract. So I signed a waiver on my Kolkata contract and they got what they wanted.

“It was a plan from the start, they didn’t allow any franchises to bid on Pakistani players. You can’t hide these things in the modern world, it’s an open secret that this was a political decision from the Indian government,” Razzaq said.

Razzaq said it’s a shame that the world of sports is being dragged into politics because sport has the power to become a unifying force. (ANI)

Indian man claiming insurance fraudulently avoids jail

Melbourne, May 3 (ANI): A magistrate’s court here has delivered a suspended jail sentence to an Indian national who sought to commit insurance fraud by declaring that he had been attacked by thugs. He also claimed that they doused his car with petrol and burned it.

Jaspreet Singh, however, had actually destroyed the car himself to claim the insurance money.

The Herald Sun quoted magistrate Felicity Broughton as describing Singh”s botched insurance scam as a stupid “premeditated enterprise”” that brought great shame to himself, his family and his community.

Defence lawyer Paul McClure said it was a desperate plan for money that “backfired””.

Police prosecutor Sen-Constable Luke Devlin told Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today that Singh intended to sell his car – a 2003 Ford Futura sedan – as he intended to return to India on holiday at the end of January 2010. (ANI)

Library searches for new home

Wollongong council says it is trying to find a new home for its library branch at Warrawong which has been given a month to vacate its shopping centre site.

Westfield says it will not renew the lease for the library, which has operated at the site for 21 years.

The council says the lease expired in September last year but it did not expect it would not be renewed.

Library services manager, Jenny Thompson, says it is short notice for what will be a big move.

“They did say that they’d be willing to try and work with us and to support us however they could, so we’re hoping that that will translate into perhaps being an extension on time,” she said.

“But they did also say that they had another tenant lined up and that that tenant was ready to move in from the 1st of May.”

Westfield has said in a statement it is negotiating with the incoming retailer to give the library more time to find new premises.

It is understood the discount fashion retailer Trade Secret will be taking up the lease at the Warrawong Shopping Centre.

A Westfield spokeswoman says the shop will contribute to the centre’s economic vitality and strengthen what it has to offer.

But the Member for Wollongong, Noreen Hay, says the retail giant should be condemned for it actions.

“Mums and partners do their shopping in Westfield and continue their loyal custom to Westfield,” she said.

“Partners and kids and the rest are using the library.

“I think its a shame and I think Westfield has an obligation to the community as well as receiving their loyal custom.”

Dagg kicks Highlanders to victory

Otago full-back Israel Dagg has punished an indisciplined Lions side by kicking 24 points to help the Highlanders to a 39-29 victory in their Super 14 match in Dunedin.

The South African side was heavily penalised by Australian referee Stuart Dickinson, who also awarded a penalty try to the home team.

Dagg slotted six penalties and three conversions.

The Lions, who have yet to win a match in their seven Super 14 games this season, secured a bonus point after scoring five tries but threw the game away by conceding too many kickable penalties.

“The boys showed a lot of courage and ticker when they were down in that first 20 minutes,” Highlanders captain Jimmy Cowan said.

“It’s a shame we couldn’t finish it off with a bonus [point] try, but we’ll take the win and hopefully kick on.”

The Lions had dominated the opening exchanges with full-back Michael Killian scoring their first try, which Carlos Spencer converted, before their rolling maul from line-outs led to tries from captain Cobus Grobbelaar and winger Wigan Pekeur.

The Highlanders had two penalties converted by Dagg to stay within striking distance and then finally got into the game with a 30th minute try from lock Hayden Triggs.

Dagg converted the try then took advantage of Lions infringements to kick three more penalties and give the Highlanders an unlikely 22-17 lead at half-time.

The full-back slotted his sixth penalty early in the second half, before centre Kenny Lynn chased a speculative kick beyond the tryline that Tonderai Chavhanga failed to clear and Lynn’s dive beat the scrambling winger to the ball.

The Highlanders were then awarded a penalty try when the Lions were adjudged to have deliberately collapsed a rolling maul that was headed for the line.

Lions replacement scrum half JP Joubert secured the bonus point when he scored a try after a well-worked move from an attacking scrum, before Pekeur bashed over with three minutes remaining.

“Our discipline cost us, giving away stupid penalties and I thought their goal kicker kicked well and kept them in the game,” Grobbelaar said.

Highlanders: 39 (H Triggs, K Lynn, penalty try; I Dagg 3 conversions, 6 penalties)

Lions: 29 (W Pekeur 2, M Killian, C Grobbelaar, JP Joubert tries; C Spencer, E Rose conversions)

Illegal dumping costing ratepayers

The Town of Port Hedland has expressed disappointment over the amount of illegal dumping of waste in bushland in the community.

Plastic bags, general household rubbish, old car batteries, newspapers and other waste have been found in an area known as Deep Water.

Mayor Kelly Howlett says the resources needed to clean up the mess is costing ratepayers.

“It is a shame, and the same with senseless vandalism of playgrounds and park equipment that if these things get destroyed, illegal dumping happens, the money ends up getting spent in those areas instead of being spent in perhaps creating new areas or perhaps adding new benefits to the town,” councillor Howlett said.

Offenders face fines of up to $1,000.

Housing program a ‘shame job’

Residents of a remote Northern Territory community say they have been short-changed on refurbishments under an embattled Aboriginal housing program.

The Commonwealth’s $672m SIHIP program allocates an average of $75,000 for each refurbishment.

Sheryl Holmes from Alekarenge, about 350 kilometres north-east of Alice Springs, says her family moved out of their house for weeks while the New Future Alliance was renovating.

She doubts more than a few thousand dollars was spent.

“Where’s all the money gone?” Ms Holmes said.

“Yeah, they were supposed to fix our houses and put coolers and everything, cupboards.

“I don’t know where’s the money gone? The ones they promised.”

Another Alekarenge resident, Arana Rice, says she does not have cupboards in any rooms, her house is still covered in graffiti and a ceiling fan installed by the New Future Alliance is not properly secured.

“I thought they would come back and fix it up but no nothing happening.

“Right now I feel shame,” she said.

The Federal Government says it will appoint an inspection and assessment team to review the quality of the refurbishments.

The Territory Public Housing Minister, Chris Burns, says residents have not raised the issues with him directly but he is happy to meet them.

Theo Walcott acknowledges Becks help during toughest year of his career

London, Mar.20 (ANI): Twenty-one-year-old Arsenal winger Theo Walcott has acknowledged England star David Beckham’s help in seeing him through the toughest year of his career.

The Arsenal winger, 21, suffered knee and back injuries this term and paid tribute to Becks and club pal Tomas Rosicky.

“David was there to help me out. I really appreciated it. It”s a big shame about his injury so near to the World Cup. I”ve had so many injuries but Arsenal have been fantastic. One big influence has been Tomas. He was out for 20 months with a knee injury but came in every day with a smile. Amazing,” The Sun quoted Walcott, as saying. (ANI)

Income management harms health: Doctors

The Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association has called for a halt to compulsory welfare quarantining for Indigenous people in the Northern Territory.

The Association has released a health impact assessment report of the Northern Territory Emergency Response.

The report says the short-term physical health benefits of restricting half of a welfare recipient’s income to food and other essentials will be cancelled out by the psychological consequences of the policy.

The Association says the shame and stigma attached to the program will have significant effects on the mental health of recipients and their children that will have serious, harmful impacts on physical health later in life.

It recommends compulsory income management be used only where there is clear evidence of abuse and neglect or a lack of school attendance.

Cheryl Cole house hunting after splitting with hubby

London, Mar 10 (ANI): After splitting with cheating husband Ashley, Cheryl Cole is all set to move out of their shared home and is busy house hunting.

The singer has been looking at two luxury properties and has told friends that her marital home holds too many painful memories.

Speculations are rife that Cheryl will soon come to a decision on buying a new place – probably still in the Surrey area.

“Cheryl does not want the separation to be a long, drawn-out affair,” the Mirror quoted a source as saying.

“She wants to find somewhere quickly so she can regain stability and become settled once more.

“If she can’t find somewhere she likes she’ll consider rented accommodation in the short term,” added the source.

And the news of Cheryl’s house hunting is likely to come as a major blow to Ashley – reinforcing how determined she is to move on.

“It’s a real shame because Cheryl loved that place. But all her memories of it have been soured by what’s gone on,” added the source. (ANI)

Obama becomes first US President to be called ‘a liar’ in Congress

London, Sep 10 (ANI): US President Barack Obama became the first president to be called ‘a liar’ in front of a joint session of Congress by a Republican senator.

South Carolina senator Joe Wilson pointing angrily at the President, blurted at the top of his voice: “You lie!” when Obama was addressing the Congress on health care.

But about half way through his 40-minute address, Obama certainly became the first president in to be called a liar, The Telegraph reports.

The president was dispelling a list of myths and “bogus claims” spread by opponents of his plan, when he denied the assertion that his proposed reforms would not provide health insurance to illegal immigrants.

Wilson’s outburst prompted cries of “Shame!” from the Democratic benches, while the president looked startled and Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House.

First Lady Michelle Obama, watching from the public gallery, shook her head in dismay. Even the Republican colleague of Wilson left patted his arm to calm him down.

Later, Wilson apologized for heckling and calling President Barack Obama ‘a liar’.

“This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the President’s remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the Health Care Bill. While I disagree with the President’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility,” Politico quoted Wilson, as saying. (ANI)

Goody’s grave lies lonely and forgotten as Tweed continues to party

London, August 31 (ANI): Jade Goody’s grave is said to be lying “lonely and forgotten” while her husband Jack Tweed has been snapped continuing his hard-party lifestyle.

The reality TV star’s final resting place was allegedly left untended, while the 22-year-old widower was photographed showing off his wedding band as he groped a girl pal’s breast at the recent V Festival.

“It’s not even been six months since she died but Jack is out behaving like a playboy while Jade’s grave lies untended. He was even caught groping one girl’s breast while wearing his wedding ring,” the Daily Star quoted Goody’s pal as saying.

The source added: “It’s such a shame to see Jack out living it up while Jade’s grave looks lonely and forgotten. Apart from a few items, including a plaque from her grandparents, a toy car on the cross from her two sons and some flowers, the grave looks really barren.”

Goody died at the age of 27 earlier this year, after losing her battle to cervical cancer. (ANI)

Jordan’s lover Alex Reid’s secret cocaine shame

London, August 30 (ANI): Jordan’s new lover Alex Reid has admitted that he snorted cocaine to relax after bouts.

The cage fighter, who was reportedly at the receiving end after a string of rows with the glamour girl over his part in violent hardcore porn film, alleged “every fighter needs to break the rules completely” and that sportsmen like him needed some “pharmaceuticals to get you high”.

The 34-year-old made the confession to the author of forthcoming ‘Warriors of the Cage’, published by Pennant Books, saying he used so much of the Class A drug that it took a toll on his health.

“I’ve done cocaine once too often, say like once every month or after a fight and that’s not good,” the News of the World quoted Reid as saying.

“It’s not good for a fighter because it’s taken vital years off my longevity in my health to come back,” he added.

The revelation may fuel the wrath of Peter Andre as he battles for custody of his children from Jordan, a.k.a Katie Price.

A source close to Andre said: “As far as Peter is concerned, Reid is not an ideal father figure and shouldn’t be responsible for another man’s children.

“Now that he’s admitted taking cocaine, it will send Peter through the roof knowing that this man is anywhere near his kids.” (ANI)

Lady Gaga says sorry to fans for not completing V Fest performance

Washington, Aug 24 (ANI): Lady Gaga recently apologised to her fans during a concert at the V Festival for not completing her performance, as she arrived late.

The pop sensation was apparently 15 minutes late in starting the show in Stafford, England.

As she arrived she announced: “My name is Lady GaGa, I’ve been so excited to play V,” reports Contactmusic.

Later, she screamed to her fans: “I live for nothing more than my fans, you guys are the f**king coolest fans on the planet.”

As time passed by such a huge crowd gathered that one girl fainted, while six others received treatment for minor injuries.

Eventually, the singer couldn’t finish her song ‘Poker face’ as the stage manger allegedly pulled off the plugs.

She said: “I’m so sorry, but I have to go. I’m so sorry, but I love you so much.”

Later she posted on Twitter: “Stage manager pulled the plug because I was 5 minutes over my time at V fest. Show was incredible. A shame people have no respect for music.

“My fans were lovely and really deserved to hear pokerface (sic). I love you and I’m sorry.” (ANI)

Former Malaysian model wants to be whipped in public

Kuala Lumpur, Aug.21 (ANI): Former Malaysian model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarnor has expressed a wish to be whipped in public if possible.

Last week, a court had ordered that Shukarnor be whipped six times for consuming alcohol in a bar in defiance of Islamic rules, the Harian Metro reported.

She was quoted as saying that she wanted the punishment to be carried out in public to serve as a lesson to others who consume alcohol.

The 32-year-old said she also wanted her family to be allowed to see the whipping.

“I hope the media will be allowed to cover it as well. I’ve brought shame to my family despite having received religious teachings from my parents since young. I hope the punishment will bring me back to the right path,” she said.

She said she did not regret her decision not to appeal despite her husband’s persuasion, preferring to treat the entire episode as a challenge from God.

She was also quoted as saying she was mentally and physically prepared for the punishment.

However, her husband Muhammad Afandin Amir, 38, is worried for his wife’s health as the punishment would possibly be carried out during the month of Ramadan.

“However, I respect the court’s decision,” he said. (ANI)
