Craigslist is a centralized network of online communities for free classified advertisements of jobs, internships, housing, personal advertisements, erotic services, for sale/barter/wanted, services, community,  pets categories and forums on various topics.

The service was founded in 1995 by Craig Newmark for the San Francisco Bay Area. After incorporation as a private for-profit company in 1999, Craigslist expanded into nine more U.S. cities in 2000, four each in 2001 and 2002, and 14 in 2003. September 2007, Craigslist had established itself in approximately 450 cities in 50 countries.

2007 Craigslist operated with a staff of 24 people. Its sole source of revenue is paid job ads in select cities ($75 per ad for the San Francisco Bay Area; $25 per ad for New York, Los Angeles, San Diego, Boston, Seattle, Washington D.C., Chicago and recently Portland, Oregon) and paid broker apartment listings in New York City ($10 per ad).

The site serves over nine billion page views per month, putting it in 56th place overall among web sites world wide, ninth place overall among web sites in the United States (per Alexa.com on January 10, 2008), to over thirty million unique visitors. With over thirty million new classified advertisements each month, Craigslist is the leading classifieds service in any medium. The site receives over two million new job listings each month. So it is one of the top job boards in the world.

In 2001, the company started the Craigslist Foundation, a § 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that helps emerging nonprofit organizations get established, gain visibility, attract the attention of potential donors, and develop the skills and knowledge required for long-term success.

It accepts charitable donations, and rather than directly funding organizations, it produces face-to-face events and offers online resources to help grassroots organizations get off the ground and contribute real value to the community.

UK taxpayer to fork out 800,000 pounds as legal fees for hate cleric Hamza

London, May 18 (ANI): The UK taxpayer is all set to fork out 800,000 pounds as legal fees for jailed hate preacher Abu Hamza.

Two years ago, hook-handed Hamza was ordered pay a million pounds as defence costs, but he has paid nothing so far.

“If nothing else is found, it means the taxpayer will have to pay 800,000 pounds for the shortfall,” The Sun quoted a Whitehall source, as saying.

The trial judge said a house linked to Hamza, who pleads poverty, should be sold as a contribution.

Legal officials face trouble in seizing the house, as Hamza, 51, claims it belongs to his sister, who lives in Egypt.

Even if the 1930s property in Greenford, West London, is grabbed it will probably fetch only 200,000 pounds instead of the original 235,000-pound value.

A Legal Services Commission spokesman said: “We will go to court to apply for the seizure of the property. We are waiting for a date.”

Hamza, jailed for seven years in 2006 for soliciting murder, is in London’s Belmarsh Prison and is fighting extradition to the US.

“This is Abu Hamza continuing to thumb his nose,” Tory MP Patrick Mercer said. (ANI)

Pak to abolish National Security Council: Gilani

Rezaul H Laskar Islamabad, Feb 24 (PTI) Pakistan government has decided to wind up the controversial National Security Council (NSC), the top decision-making body on security-related matters set up during former President Pervez Musharraf’s regime, Premier Yousuf Raza Gilani said today. He said a bill will soon be tabled in Pakistan’s Parliament to abolish the NSC, which included the three services chiefs and was headed by the President during the Musharraf era.

There was wide disagreement among political parties when the NSC was set up during the Musharraf regime, Gilani told reporters on the sidelines of an official function. The matter of dissolving the NSC had been discussed with President Asif Ali Zardari and the Law Minister has been asked to table a bill in the National Assembly, lower house of parliament, to wind up the body, Gilani said.

The Parliament is supreme as it is the voice of the 160 million people of Pakistan. “Parliament is supreme and sovereign and can debate all issues.

It is the voice of the people and whatever they decide, we will bow to it,” he said while responding to a question about Musharraf. The PPP-led government believes in consensus and parliament has not indemnified Musharraf, he said.

Man who stole radioactive material arrested

Buenos Aires, Feb 25 (IANS) A former employee of an oil services company was arrested in the Argentine city of Neuquen for stealing radioactive material and demanding $500,000 for its return, EFE reported.

Two masked men stole the material last Thursday from oil services company Baker Atlas’s offices in Neuquen by overpowering a security guard and demanding the keys to the storage area for radioactive materials.

The fled with a sealed lead-lined container holding 40 kg of the radioactive material.

Several hours later, a caller demanded that the company pay $500,000 to get the container back, the Clarin newspaper reported.

The police and Baker Atlas tried to find the container and managed to identify the robbery’s mastermind, a former company employee who was arrested Saturday while transporting the material in the trunk of a taxi.

The radioactive material was worth no more than $5,000, the newspaper said.

U.S., Iraq launch new bid to eradicate al Qaeda

U.S. and Iraqi forces have launched a new military campaign they hope will put an end to a stubborn insurgency in restive Nineveh province, seen as a final holdout for Sunni Islamist militants, officials said on Sunday.

Brigadier General Said Ahmed Abdullah, spokesman for the northern province’s military command, said local forces began searching homes and conducting widespread arrests on Friday as part of the new operation to oust al Qaeda militants.

He said 84 suspects had been detained so far in the province, which as violence drops across the country is now Iraq’s most dangerous area and seen as a haven for al Qaeda and other militants who launch car bombs and other attacks daily.

“‘Operation New Hope’ will allow the local and provincial governments to begin projects focusing on restoring essential services to the citizens of Mosul,” said Major Ramona Bellard, a U.S. military spokeswoman in northern Iraq.

While Bellard described it as a joint operation between U.S. and Iraqi forces, Abdullah said local troops would call on their U.S. counterparts for backup “only when required.”

The operation came less than a month after local elections brought a political sea change to Nineveh, where minority Kurds have dominated the provincial government since its majority Sunni Arabs boycotted elections in 2005.

Sunni Arabs’ lack of political power has been seen as fuelling much of the strife in Nineveh and its capital, Mosul, which six years after the U.S.-led invasion is still gripped by violence and in dire need of reconstruction and basic services.

Al-Hadba, a Sunni Arab bloc, swept last month’s vote in Nineveh and will dominate the provincial council from next month.

The Iraqi forces’ lead of the crackdown reflects the changing nature of military operations across Iraq as Washington prepares to withdraw troops by the end of 2011 under a bilateral security pact agreed last year.

The United States has poured billions of dollars into helping Iraq rebuild its forces, which were disbanded in 2003 by U.S. administrators and initially dominated by corruption, armed gangs and sectarianism when they were reformed.

Under the new security pact that took effect in January, Iraqi approval is required before U.S. troops can conduct combat operations, and U.S. combat troops are due to withdraw from Iraqi cities in the middle of next year.

UK M15, Pak ISI colluded to torture terror suspects: Report

London, Feb 22 (PTI) A report that will further embarrass Gordon Brown led British government, UK security agents were “complicit” in torture of at least 10 Britons in collusion with Pakistan’s ISI and the network “run much deeper”. “The issue is not just British complicity in the torture of British citizens, it is the issue of British complicity in the torture period,” Ali Dayan Hasan, who led the Pakistan-based inquiry for the Human Rights Watch said.

“We know of at least 10 cases, but the complicity probably runs much deeper because it involves a series of terror suspects who are Pakistani.” He said the sources in country’s ISI, the IB and the military security services had provided “confirmation and information” relating to UK collusion in such interrogations.

It warns that more UK cases may surface and that the issue of Pakistani terrorism suspects interrogated by British agents is likely to “run much deeper”. The report will further embarrass Miliband, who has repeatedly said the UK does not condone torture.

He has been under fire for refusing to disclose US documents relating to the treatment of Guantnamo detainee and former British resident Binyam Mohamed, the Observer reported today. Hasan said HRW evidence indicated a “systemic” modus operandi among UK security services, involving a significant number of agents from MI5 rather than maverick elements.

Kapil Dev condemns BCCI for victimizing players joining ICL

Kapil Dev condemns BCCI for victimizing players joining ICL Former Indian Cricket team captain Kapil Dev condemns BCCI, while appearing before the registrar of Delhi High Court, for dragging his name in match fixing controversy in the court and lash out at cricket body for victimizing players joining ICL against its wishes.

The case was filed by the former all rounder, captain of world cup winning team of India, against BCCI, for stopping pension of players joining Indian Cricket League.

Kapil Dev said, “It is incorrect to say that the BCCI has not put any pressure on PSUs and other organizations in respect of their employees who have joined ICL. They
(former players) are under pressure.” He asked the court to direct government to release pensions and other benefits for former players keeping in mind the services they offer for promotion of game and country’s name at international level.

Obliquely indicating the role of Lalit Modi to victimize players, he said, “They are trying to be vindictive towards us. Only one section of the Board is trying to do that. Moreover, it is just one person, who is being vindictive towards us.”

Group Head of ICL, Himanshu Mody said that BCCI counsel is wasting court’s time by diverting attention to the actual matter, leveling charges of match fixing.

India’s economic growth to slow to six-year low of 7.1 per cent

India's economic growth to slow to six-year low of 7.1 per cent New Delhi – India’s economy is expected to post its lowest growth in six years and fall to 7.1 per cent for the current fiscal year against 9 per cent the previous year, according to government data released Monday.

The estimate – the first official projection for the financial year ending on March 31 – was on expected lines and similar to the rate forecast by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Economic Advisory Panel.

The Central Statistical Organization (CSO) data showed that the growth figures for the three main components of national income – agriculture, manufacturing and services
- were expected to fall.

Manufacturing output growth was estimated at 4.1 per cent, half of the 8.2 per cent expansion in 2007-2008, while agriculture growth was pegged at 2.6 per cent against 4.9 per cent the previous year.

Services growth was estimated to fall to 9.6 per cent against 10.9 per cent.

The decline in growth figures of Asia’s third largest economy comes in the backdrop of a global slowdown that has hit the country’s key sectors.

The central Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had also recently lowered its growth forecast for gross domestic product (GDP) to 7 per cent from 7.5-8 per cent. (dpa)

Satyam to announce long-term plan next week – chairman

The board of fraud-hit Satyam Computer Services Ltd will decide on a long-term action plan, including a possible sale, in the next 7 to 10 days, its chairman said on Monday.

Kiran Karnik, who was last week appointed by the government as the chairman of the Satyam board, told Reuters a clear picture would be available by the middle of next week.

Satyam has been battling for survival after founder and former chairman Ramalinga Raju disclosed last month that profits had been overstated for years in the country’s biggest corporate scandal.

The fund-starved outsourcer firm, whose clients include General Electric and Coca Cola, has borrowed 6 billion rupees ($123 million) from banks to meet short-term capital needs.

“Now the short-term crisis has been taken care of. Once the fire-fighting is over, everybody is curious to know where things are moving,” Karnik said.

“We will chart out a long-term roadmap in the next 7 to 10 days and make a recommendation to the government that may include all possibilities. The government has to decide.”

“Things will be clearer by the middle of next week.”

Top engineering firm Larsen & Toubro controls about 12 percent of Satyam and has not ruled out raising its stake, while diversified Indian business houses Spice Group and Hinduja Group have also shown interest.

The board has appointed Goldman Sachs and another Indian investment bank to find a strategic bidder for the company.

The Economic Times newspaper said earlier on Monday Satyam would trim its sales staff in overseas locations to help cut costs and to repay debts to creditors, but Karnik said they were not in a hurry to shed workforce.

“We are not in a hurry (to trim employees count). We’ll have to look at it,” he said. “Obviously there is a financial crisis. Cost-control measures are being taken.”

ADB to provide 300-million-dollar loan to Pakistan

ADB to provide 300-million-dollar loan to PakistanIslamabad – The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide Pakistan with a loan of 300 million dollars to improve water and sanitation services in six cities of country’s southern province of Sindh, a Pakistani official said on Friday.

“This program is aimed at bringing improvement in water, sanitation and solid waste management areas of these cities,” Farrakh Qayyum, Pakistan’s Secretary of the Economic Affairs Division told reporters after signing an agreement with ADB’s country director, Rune Stroem.

Sindh, Pakistan’s second most populous province, is faced with rising population growth, a severe deficit of basic urban infrastructure and services and growing urban poverty.

Limited access to and poor quality of water supply, together with poor sanitation, is causing a spread of diseases and chronic illnesses such as diarrhea, especially among children.

The first tranche of 38 million million dollars of ADB’s multi-tranche financing, planned for the 2009-2012 period will focus on institutional change and priority infrastructure for the cities of Sukkur, New Sukkur, Rohri, Khairpur, Shikarpur and Larkana.

“The investment will help the provincial government of Sindh cope with mounting challenges in providing basic urban services to an estimated four million residents over the next several years,” Stroem said. (dpa)

Cisco Gets Wise To Cut Energy Costs

Cisco Gets Wise To Cut Energy Costs For the recent few years, it is notable that various industry bodies have been putting a lot of stress on “Going green”. However on Tuesday Cisco Systems came out with software that will help organizations chop energy costs and reduce their carbon footprints as it is capable of managing devices and systems that gather up power.

Apparently, the novel EnergyWise Technology by Cisco is available as software built into IOS in Catalyst switches. In order to observe devices it uses standard protocols; report on those devices’ energy use and in the end use policies to control those devices and the power they consume.

Judy Lin, senior vice president of Cisco’s Ethernet technology business group said, “The ability to report on and monitor device power usage and set policies around it opens the door for solution providers to have a new conversation with customers while also being able to wrap in green consulting services.”

It has been learnt that the rolling out of the EnergyWise would be done in three phases. In the first phase the EnergyWise will be available on the Catalyst 2960, 3560 and
3750 and a partnership with network monitoring vendor SolarWinds, undertakes network control, allowing users to administer the energy consumption of Power-over-Ethernet-powered IP devices like phones, wireless access points and video surveillance cameras would be included in it. It would be available next month. The power levels can be determined by the users, who can also create policies, discover power usage, manage power and create reports around consumption.

Coming on to the Phase two, which is expected this summer offers users IT control over non-PoE devices like PCs, laptops and printers. The Phase two, which would be available in Catalyst 4500 includes a partnership with Verdiem, unlocks the ability to monitor and manage PC use. The users via the second phase are also offered better measurement capabilities and location-assessment functionality.

The last but not the least, Phase three will have an EnergyWise that would be able to have a broader control.
