This is the first time that curfew was relaxed since it was imposed for an indefinite period on Monday evening following communal clashes.

Earlier, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah and Leader of Opposition N Chandrababu Naidu appealed to the people to observe discipline following reports of fresh clashes.

It has been reported that at least eight persons, including two cops were injured as protestors” pelted stones during a Hanuman Jayanti procession that led to communal clashes in new areas of the city.

Ludhiana businessman designs ”half scale” UAV

Ludhiana, Mar. 31 (ANI): A Ludhiana-based businessman who started off with aero modelling as a hobby has designed a ”half scale” unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

UAV is a light aerial vehicle used by the air force for border surveillance and light combat. Since it is an unmanned vehicle the Air Force uses it to navigate sensitive areas without loss of human life.

“After completing my college studies, I joined my family business, which is a company engaged in manufacturing bicycle parts known by the bhogal brand,” Manjeev Bhogal, owner of Bhogal Hobby Tech, said.

“After joining the business, defence forces approached for aero modelling training because they were aware of my hobby because of NCC Air Wing. When they approached us we started giving training army personnel and officers as hobby flyers,” he added.

Currently, the IAF trains its pilots with UAVs imported from Israel.

Manjeev Bhogal’s company is now eyeing an order which will enable it to manufacture ”half- scale”UAVs at half the import price of 800,000 rupees.

For five years, Bhogal hobby tech has been manufacturing small training aero models for the UAV squadrons of the IAF, Indian Army and the Indian Navy training.

The company has supplied about 24 aero models and flight simulators to the National Cadet Corps (NCC) to train their cadets for microlite flying. (ANI)

Input sought for population growth policy

The Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) hopes to develop a policy on population growth after the last of four public inquiries is held in Townsville today.

Greg Hallam from the LGAQ says the policy will be used to help the State Government to plan for future growth.

He says the inquiry panel wants to hear from north Queenslanders.

“Anyone who has a view – mums and dads, kids, local businesses, local environmentalists, anyone that has a view about population policy and what should occur and what needs to happen in Queensland can have their say,” he said.

“Either to the inquiry in public today … or by writing and attaching it to our website.”

Mr Hallam says the inquiry has already made three stops around the state and infrastructure has been a major focus of discussions.

“People believe that there should be infrastructure before the population actually occurs,” he said.

“There’s a belief that in sustainable communities we need to see protection of sensitive areas and of course the great majority of those are in north Queensland, the wet tropics and the Great Barrier Reef.

“So those are the sorts of issues that have been coming forward from the community in north Queensland.”

ROUNDUP: Pakistani troops on standby to control protests

ROUNDUP: Pakistani troops on standby to control protests Islamabad – The Pakistani government has put its troops on standby ahead of a planned anti-government rally in Islamabad by opposition groups, an army spokesman said Saturday.

Major General Athar Abbas said the military had been formally asked to keep the troops ready. “These can be deployed in sensitive areas of some districts if the situation gets out of control,” he added.

An alliance of opposition parties and lawyers Thursday launched a cross-country march in southern Pakistan and is heading towards Islamabad, where they planned to start a sit-in on Monday until their demand for independent judiciary is met.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to attend the rally.

President Asif Ali Zardari has tried to suppress the protests which threaten political instability in the nuclear-armed country, with arrests of more than 1,000 activists.

This has raised concerns in Washington and other Western nations, which want the nuclear-armed country to focus on the fight against Taliban and al-Qaeda militants.

US and British diplomats have tried to broker a deal between opposition leader Nawaz Sharif and Zardari. Pakistani military chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani is also part of the reconciliation efforts that continued late Friday.

But they failed to persuade Zardari into a compromise to defuse political tensions.

An adamant Zardari told Kayani that he could think about the reconciliation formula only after Monday when the fury of the so- called long march was over, the English-language The News reported.

Zardari urged the opposition for resolving the matter through dialogue early Saturday after a meeting lasting several hours to pursue efforts to defuse tensions.

“The meeting expressed hope that the offer will be responded to positively by the political forces in the country,” his spokesman Farhatullah Babar said.

Meanwhile, opposition parties and anti-government lawyers were in the midst of their cross-country march Saturday, travelling through the eastern province of Punjab en route to Islamabad.

Around 2,000 black-suited lawyers gathered in the central town of Multan, where they scuffled with riot police who stopped them from embarking on their journey to Punjab’s capital, Lahore. They chanted slogans like “Death to Zardari,” “Zardari is a dog” and “restore the chief justice.”

Many of them later left for Islamabad where thousands of paramilitary troops have been called out and law enforcement agencies have seized thousands of containers and trucks to block roads.

Zardari has ordered a blockade of transmissions of the country’s most popular Geo news channel in many cities, its administration says.

The hard-handed tactics triggered criticism from rights activists and even dissent within Zardari’s own Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

Information Minister Sherry Rehman resigned after failing to persuade Zardari to lift the ban on telecasts. Rehman was the second minister to resign from the cabinet in less than two weeks.

Senator Safdar Abbasi, a senior PPP leader, lashed out Friday at Zardari while speaking at a lawyers meeting.

“You are losing your repute in the party,” Abbasi said. “The nation is not ready to trust you. For God’s sake, restore your credibility. If you don’t do this, the party will be on the receiving end.”

Naheed Khan, who served as political secretary to Zardari’s slain spouse and former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, said he hoped Zardari “would put his ego aside and fulfil the demand of millions of Pakistani people for reinstatement of (deposed) justice Iftikhar Chaudhry as the chief justice of Pakistan.” (dpa)

Phased withdrawal of Central forces from Orissa to start today

Bhubaneshwar, Jan 15 (ANI): The government will begin withdrawal of its Central forces from Orissa’s Kandhamal District in a phased manner from today.

The Central forces had to be deployed in Kandhmal following the communal violence between Hindus and Christians that triggered after murder of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh leader and anti-conversion leader Lakshmananand Saraswathi.

“A communication from the Union Home Ministry stated that withdrawal of 53 companies of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Rapid Action Force from Orissa would start in a phased manner from January 15″, said Orissa’s Home Secretary A.P. Padhi.

“At least ten companies would be pulled out in consultation with the Orissa police in the first-phase that begins January 15,” Padhi had said while adding that “Ten more companies would be withdrawn in February and the remainder by the end of March this year.”

At least 40 companies of the Central forces comprising about 4,000 personnel are at present stationed in Kandhamal district and the remaining 13 in several other sensitive areas of the state.
Though the Central forces were to stay in Orissa till December 31, 2008, on a Supreme Court order, Orissa’s Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had written to the Centre urging extension of the deployment till January 31, said sources.

The Chief Minister had subsequently demanded deployment of 2,000 personnel in riot-hit Kandhamal till the end of the coming general elections.

The step to withdraw the forces in a phased manner has come up as per the Orissa Chief Minister’s request to the Govt., which he had stated during the Chief Ministers’ conference on internal security earlier this month.

Earlier this month, Patnaik had stated that the State Government was severely handicapped by lack of resources in terms of money, men and material to fight extremism.

Patnaik had informed that the situation in Kandhamal was under control, but a complete normalcy could be restored only after all persons in the relief camps returned home.

Stating that his government favoured phased withdrawal of forces from Kandhamal, the Chief Minister had said it should be carried out over the next three months.

Seeking six more battalions of CRPF for deployment in 17 Maoist-affected districts, Patnaik has asked the Centre to provide a dedicated helicopter at Bhubaneswar for aerial reconnaissance of Naxal bastions, evacuation of injured personnel and quick movement of forces. (ANI)
