Dame Kiri Te Kanawa not impressed by Susan Boyle

London, May 18 (ANI): Susan Boyle, the ‘Britain”s Got Talent’ sensation, may have earned millions of fans, but Dame Kiri Te Kanawa is definitely not one of them.

Dame Kiri said she was ””not interested”” in discussing the YouTube sensation after Boyle performed it on Britain”s Got Talent last year.

According to The Telegraph, when asked about Boyle”s success with the tune from Les Miserables, which she too has performed, she told the Radio Times, ””Let”s get off that subject. Move on.

””I”m doing something classical, not whiz-bang. Whiz-bang disappears. It goes ”whiz” and then ”bang”.””

””You insult me by even wanting to bring it into this conversation. I”m not interested.

””This competition is named after me and has far more stability.

””It”s judged seriously by people with integrity who know what they”re talking about.””

About Andrea Bocelli performing opera, she said ””He did. Once. He wants to be an opera singer, but he isn”t.””

””We should talk about serious classical singers if you want to stick to the subject,” was the reply on mentioning Katherine Jenkins”s name.

””There”s Angela Gheorghiu, Renee Fleming, Anna Netrebko performing glorious, serious, grand opera without microphones. There aren”t many of us.”” (ANI)

”Sickest film ever” makes viewers reach for sick bags

London, May 18 (ANI): A movie that is being hailed as one of the most twisted, stomach-churning films of all time, is said to have made American cinemagoers reach for the sick bags.

”The Human Centipede” features a depraved storyline about a psychopathic German surgeon who drugs his victims before surgically joining them together, mouth to backside, in order to create a human centipede.

And now British movie fans are bracing themselves for the forthcoming release of ultimate video nasty.

The horror is said to be so gross that cinemagoers have been racing out of US screenings to be sick – and reviewers are warning audiences not to eat before seeing the film.

Many of the actresses who auditioned for the gore fest refused to have anything to do with the film and walked out in disgust when they got a look at the full script.

But the sadistic and vile scenes of humans being stitched together in the doctor”s cellar, after the surgeon”s earlier failed attempt to do the same with dogs, are proving the film”s big selling point.

Clips from the film have been a YouTube sensation, with the trailer alone racking up 1.4million views. Screenings in Los Angeles have also sold out.

Such has been the repulsion and fascination with the film on horror websites that audiences in US cities where the movie isn”t being shown have won the right to have the movie beamed into their own homes.

In an unusual move, the low-budget, high-gore film is now available on pay-per-view television right across America while still on limited release in cinemas.

In a few months time, the movie is set for release in Britain, if it doesn”t get banned first, and the buzz surrounding the film has led to several UK companies competing for the rights to release it later this year.

“It”s a very sick idea but I knew it was something that people would talk about,” the Sun quoted the film”s Dutch writer-director Tom Six, as saying.

He decided to make the villain German after learning about sick Nazi medical experiments carried out after their invasion of the Netherlands in World War II.

German actor Dieter Laser plays twisted surgeon Dr Heiter and creates one of the most memorable and evil villains in cinema history.

A real surgeon advised the moviemakers during filming and the movie”s poster boasts that the procedures shown in ”The Human Centipede” are “100 per cent medically accurate”.

Meanwhile the twisted flick looks set to become a lucrative new horror franchise with The Human Centipede 2 already in production. (ANI)

Capello can take England to World Cup glory without Rooney: Nistelrooy

London, Apr 28(ANI): Former Manchester United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy reckons that England manager Fabio Capello can guide the Three Lions to World Cup glory despite Wayne Rooney’s absence.

“There is no one better in England than Wayne in his position. Wayne is a massive influence for England and can make the difference between the quarter-finals and scoring a goal and the semis,” The Sun quoted Nistelrooy, as saying.

“But if for one reason or another he can’t play, you know that Fabio Capello will find a way,” he added.

The 33-year-old, who had played under Capello at Real Madrid, believes Capello is one of the best managers in the world and he will prove his worth in England as well.

“I was so disappointed when he left. I told him that. I felt there was so much more in there for us if he had stayed. I really had that sensation and that”s what he has proven with England as well,” Nistelrooy said.

“I spoke to some of the English lads before he got to work and I told them, ‘He is going to turn it around, he is going to be unbelievable for England’. That’s what he does. He’s a successful manager and he achieves things,” he added. (ANI)

Underdeveloped brain makes young drivers more prone to car crashes

Melbourne, Apr 28 (ANI): A new study claims to have found the reason as to why young drivers are involved in so many car crashes: underdeveloped brains.

According to Dr Lisa Wundersitz, from the Centre for Automotive Research, the underdeveloped brains make young drivers more impulsive and less able to properly assess risks.

Wundersitz said research has shown that inexperience, distractions from modern technology and a cultural tendency to “take risks” were the reason for most accidents, reports The Couriermail.

“There is a biological element the prefrontal cortex of the brain is not fully developed until they are in their 20s,” she said.

“This means their long-term planning skills, reasoning and impulse skills are all lacking.

“Typically, a lot of people might speed because they love the adrenaline rush it”s sensation seeking.

“I guess you want to experience certain impulses and as we get older, you might have the same impulse but you will think of the consequences as well.”

Wundersitz also blamed modern technology for the increase in young driver crashes.

“You have mobile phones, GPS, iPods, entertainment screens it can be quite distracting.

“An inexperienced driver suddenly has to divide their attention between driving and these distractions.

“It”s more difficult for them than a more experienced driver, where the driving process is more automated,” she said. (ANI)

””We feel honoured to have the ”She Wolf” herself come to Worthy Farm,” she said. (ANI)

Multiple sclerosis sufferer regains mobility – thanks to bee stings

London, April 5 (ANI): Sami Chugg had been suffering from multiple sclerosis before she beat the disease with nearly 1,500 bee stings over 18 months.

Chugg, 45, was diagnosed with the debilitating condition, which affects the ability of the body’s nerve cells to communicate, in 1998.

Soon she could not longer move around and was permanently bed-ridden.

However, this charity worker from Bristol is now back on her feet, thanks to bee venom therapy.

The treatment involves holding a bee in tweezers and stinging an area of skin. According to experts, the venom eases the pain of MS symptoms while stimulating the body to fight the disease.

Chugg says the treatment restored her mobility.

“Most people would be terrified by the prospect of being stung by a bee,” the Daily Express quoted her, as saying.

She went on: “But when you have a condition like MS that involves the numbing of the body, any kind of sensation is welcome – even if it’s from a bee sting.

“You use a pair of tweezers and get hold of a single bee. Then you gradually desensitise your body to the sting by injecting it in and out of your skin a few times.

“You have to build it up slowly – you start with two, then four, then six.

“Ten to 14 was my average for each session. It has a kind of psychological, mental effect.”

Chugg added: “I used to feel elated after the treatment. It’s changed my life and my approach to life. It’s manna from heaven.” (ANI)

Folau in doubt for Raiders clash

Broncos ace Israel Folau is battling the fitness clock after suffering a shoulder injury during Friday night’s 30-24 NRL thriller over the Cowboys.

Scans on Saturday revealed the giant centre sustained a grade one separation of his left A/C shoulder joint, putting him in doubt for Monday week’s clash in Canberra.

“There’s no break which is good news, but there’s a slight separation,” relieved Brisbane coach Ivan Henjak said.

“We’ll have to manage him carefully and I guess he is at risk of missing the Raiders game.”

Henjak’s decision to pull winger Antonio Winterstein from the action in the second half also paid off with his his injury restricted to hamstring tightness.

“I think it was lucky we got him off when we did,” Henjak said.

While young full-back sensation Corey Norman, voted TV man-of-the-match, continued to get most of the accolades, Henjak says the performance of vice-captain Corey Parker had been vital to the Broncos getting two premiership points.

Parker played the entire 80 minutes, making 54 tackles and a team-best 159 metres with the ball.

“He did an incredible amount of work and I had to move him into the ruck at one stage,” Henjak said.

“I wanted to get him off, but I couldn’t when the game got so tight because of his experience. He was fantastic.”

Parker played in tighter in the second half to allow rookie Matt Gillett to operate on the edges, a strategy Henjak is likely to persist with given how well it worked against the Cowboys.

After leading 24-0 early in the second half, Brisbane withstood a Johnathan Thurston inspired fight-back to sneak home after the scores were locked at 24-24 with 10 minutes to go.

“I think we learned a pretty good lesson about playing when we’re in front,” Henjak said.

“The game was like last year’s season rolled into 80 minutes.

“We were good early, pretty ordinary in the middle, and then came back at the end.”

Ignoring Razzaq a ‘big mistake’: Mohammad Akram

Islamabad, Sep.19 (ANI): Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Akram has criticised the selectors for ignoring all-rounder Abdul Razzaq for the ICC Champions Trophy, saying they have made a ‘big mistake’ by leaving out the experienced player.

“The Pakistan selectors have made an error in leaving Abdul Razzaq out of the squad for the Champions Trophy. They have made a big mistake by not selecting him and the team will miss his hitting power down the order and his bowling too in South Africa. I was very surprised when I saw the squad and noted that Razzaq wasn’t named. If it had been up to me I would have left out Shoaib Malik” Akram said.

Commenting on the young guns of the team,Akram, who played for Pakistan from 1995 to 2001, said he is particularly impressed by the young pace sensation Mohammad Aamer.

“Mohammad Aamer has been very impressive. Provided he stays fit and in form, he will be a great find for Pakistan,” Akram told PakPassion.net.

When asked which team he thinks would lift the coveted Champions Trophy this time, Khan said the Championship would go to one of the three participating Asian teams.

“In my opinion I think one of the Asian teams will be champions this time around,” he said. (ANI)

Horny ghost on the prowl in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, Sep 18 (ANI): A horny orang minyak, which is supposed to be a ghost in Malay culture, is said to be terrorising about 300 families in Sungai Petani, picking homes where there are young women.

According to Kosmo!, Nurshahirah, 17, revealed that she was awakened at 5.40am on September 14 after she felt a warm sensation on her left ear, and when she opened her eyes she saw an apparition with curly hair and thick moustache standing by her bed.

“I was even more shocked when the ghost took off his kain pelikat and started to fondle himself,” the Star Online quoted her as saying.

Nurshahirah, who lives in Taman Keladi, said she felt powerless to ward off the apparition who started to grope her body, and that it was as though a charm had been placed on her.

In another incident, housewife Fatimah, 42, revealed she heard her two daughters crying out when they were woken up at 5am by dark apparitions that molested them.

Her 15-year-old daughter told her that she had been “violated” by a ghost.

“At first I thought she was talking in her sleep but she insisted that she was molested by a ghost before it moved to the kitchen,” Fatimah said.

She said her 14-year-old, too, cried and ran from the living room, saying a dark apparition had molested her.

“My 14-year-old daughter said she managed to kick the ghost who wore a kain pelikat and black singlet when she felt her body being touched,” she revealed.

“She screamed and the ghost ran out of her room,” she added.

Fatimah said she gave chase with a parang but the apparition disappeared.

She also said the apparition could have placed a charm on her family because none of the neighbours heard her daughters’ screams. (ANI)

Cancer safety fears of most common heartburn treatment rejected

Washington, Sep 10 (ANI): The largest ever study on ‘Proton pump inhibitors’ (PPI)-the second most prescribed group of drugs for heartburn-has dismissed all fears about the cancer causing effects of the treatment.

PPI are the most commonly used treatment for chronic acid reflux, or ‘heartburn’, a painful burning sensation in the chest, neck and throat which is experienced by almost a third of people in developed countries.

Regular and prolonged heartburn is known to cause ‘benign oesophagitis’, a reversible inflammation of the gullet.

However if left untreated a condition called Barrett’s Oesophagus (BE) occurs in around 10 per cent of sufferers, which can in turn develop into a potentially fatal cancer called oesophageal adenocarcinoma.

While PPIs had an excellent safety record, it was unclear if long-term use of these drugs to reduce the discomfort of heartburn could increase the risk of developing either BE or the spread of the associated cancer.

But, the new research carried out at Queen Mary, University of London and Leicester Royal Infirmary, has given the most conclusive evidence yet that this is not the case.

Professor Janusz Jankowski, who co-authored the study, said: “This is one of the most detailed studies investigating both the laboratory and clinical side of proton pump inhibitor drugs. As a consequence we are now better able to inform patients of the good benefit/risk ratio of this commonly prescribed therapy.”

Tests carried out during the two-year study looked at tissue sampled from the oesophagus lining of ninety volunteers, each of whom were given PPI drugs at either a high or low dosage.

Researchers found that there was no difference in the rate at which BE developed, neither was there a change in the number of precancerous cells in either group.

Despite fears about how the treatments might affect people already suffering from BE, the study showed that there was no evidence that this led to any worsening of the condition or any extra incidences of cancer.

PPIs work by blocking the action of gastrin, a hormone that controls acid levels in the stomach, and is known to increase the normal movement of cells in the gastro-intestinal tract.

Since PPI therapy increases the levels of gastrin in the body, it had been thought this could cause expansion of BE affected tissue, but this was not found to be the case.

In fact, the scientists observed neither expansion nor contraction of the abnormal tissue.

The study has been published in the peer reviewed journal Gut. (ANI)
