Manipur curfew relaxed for twelve hours

Imphal, Feb 26 (ANI): Indefinite curfew, which was clamped recently in Imphal following protests over the abduction and killing of Sub Divisional Officer (SDO) of Kasom Khullen, a sub-division of Ukhrul district, was relaxed for twelve hours from 6:00 a.m. on Thursday morning.

According to sources, the curfew would be lifted in the next few days if no violence is reported.

Educational institutions, government offices and banks are functioning normally during relaxation of the curfew.

Meanwhile, the Manipur Cabinet decided to hand over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Though primarily the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah) (NSCN) (IM) is suspected to be behind the incident, the outfit, however, has denied having anything to do with the killings or abduction.

The incident has been condemned by organizations like the United Committee Manipur, which has submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister.

Additional security forces have been deployed in Nagamapal kangjabi Leirak, Uripok Khoisnam Leikai and Yumnam Leikai, the region where the deceased came from.

Six people were kidnapped, including Thingnam Kishan, the SDO, his driver A, Rajen, and one other person of his staff. Their bodies were located after three days at Taphou in Senapati district. The remaining three other persons-a peon of the SDO office and two other workers-are yet to be traced. (ANI)

Manipur protests against killing of three government employees

Ukhrul (Manipur), Feb 26 (ANI): Condemning the killing of three government officials, residents staged a silent protest rally here and demanded punishment for the guilty.

All the education institutions, offices, business establishments, transport and other activities remained closed in Ukhrul district in view of the protest rally organised by all the Tangkhul frontal organizations on Wednesday.

“We feel very bad. This thing should not happen in our area. All of us feel very sorry for the bereaved families,” said N. Everest Luikham, a member of the Organising Committee.

Scores of people including school and college students joined the protest rally and expressed solidarity with the bereaved families of Th. Kishan Singh, A. Rajen Sharma and Y. Token Singh.

“I think the culprits should be picked and handed over to the public and the State Government so that this kind of crime do not happen in future,” said Wormichon, a resident.

Violence had erupted in Imphal as police recovered bodies of three government employees in Senapati district on February 16.

The killings, which sparked widespread resentment, were blamed on the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isaac-Muivah- NSCN- IM) cadres.

However, the NSCN (I-M) has denied any links with the murder of the three government employees. (ANI)

Two-day strike paralyses normal life in Manipur

Ukhrul (Manipur), Feb 19 (ANI): The normal life in Manipur continues to be disrupted for the second day following a general strike called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the killing of three state government employees in Ukhrul district by some unknown persons.

The JAC has alleged inefficiency on the part of the Ukhrul district Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of police with regard to the killing of SDO Dr Thingnam Kishan, his driver and a Revenue Department employee under mysterious circumstances.

Mutilated bodies of the Kishan and his two co-workers were recovered from a Senapati district location on February 17 morning, after the trio was reportedly abducted by unidentified armed persons from an Ukhrul district area on February 13.

The 48-hour strike, which began on Tuesday midnight, has caused a complete shutdown of markets across the state with no vehicles are visible on the roads.he state cabinet has decided to handover the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

However, some political parties are demanding a judicial inquiry into the killing. (ANI)
