Aarushi murder case: CBI reconstitutes team

New Delhi, Sep 9 (ANI): The CBI has reconstituted its team of officials investigating the Aarushi-Hemraj murder case.

CBI chief Ashwani Kumar took the decision in this effect, as he did not agree with the line of investigation taken by the team, sources said.

The new will most probably start investigation right from scratch as now even the vaginal swab of 14-year-old Aarushi seems to have been misplaced or not taken at all, they said.

Sources said that there was no semen, as alleged initially, in the slides sent to the centre and corroborative testing revealed that the material was not drawn from Aarushi.

Aarushi was found murdered in her Noida home on May 15, 2008. Their domestic help Hemraj was later found dead on the rooftop. (ANI)

Over 300,00 stranded as Assam flood situation turns grim

Guwahati/Majuli (Assam), July 4 (ANI): Incessant rains in Assam’s catchment areas have left over 300,000 people stranded.

Reports said that most of the state’s rivers are in spate and flowing above the danger level.

Official sources described the flood situation in the state as very grim on Friday.

The Brahmaputra river is flowing above the danger level at several places, including Dibrugarh, Jorhat and Guwahati. Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Jorhat have been described as the worst-hit districts.

Vast tracts of land have been submerged by breaches in river embankments.

In Majuli, the world’s largest inhabited river island, a breach in the embankment, has left over 100,000 people stranded in Jengraimukh, Nayabazar, Fuloni, Halodiati and Kherakotaunkh areas.

Personnel of the National Disaster Rescue Force have arrived in the area to rescue the affected people.

The situation in lower Assam districts of Baksa, Barpeta and Udalguri is also grim following release of water from the Kurishu dam in Bhutan. In Dhemaji, the Semen river has inundated vast tracts in Jonai sub-division while the River Gai and Jiadhol are also in spate.(ANI)

Daily sex ‘helps improve sperm quality’

Washington, July 1 (ANI): Having sex every day improves men’s sperm quality, an Australian study has revealed.

In a study of men with fertility problems, researchers found that daily ejaculation for a week cut the amount of DNA damage seen in sperm samples.

“All that we knew was that intercourse on the day of ovulation offered the highest chance of pregnancy, but we did not know what was the best advice for the period leading up to ovulation or egg retrieval for IVF,” Dr David Greening, an obstetrician and gynaecologist with sub specialist training in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at Sydney IVF, Wollongong, Australia, said.

“I thought that frequent ejaculation might be a physiological mechanism to improve sperm DNA damage, while maintaining semen levels within the normal, fertile range,” he added.

To investigate this hypothesis, Greening studied 118 men who had higher than normal sperm DNA damage as indicated by a DNA Fragmentation Index (DFI).

Men who had a more than 15 percent of their sperm damaged were eligible for the trial. At Sydney IVF, sperm DNA damage is defined as less than 15 percent DFI for excellent quality sperm, 15-24 percent DFI for good, 25-29 percent DFI for fair and more than 29 percent DFI for poor quality; but other laboratories can have slightly different ranges.

The men were instructed to ejaculate daily for seven days, and no other treatment or lifestyle changes were suggested. Before they started, levels of DNA damage ranged between 15 percent and 98 percent DFI, with an average 34 percent DFI when measured after three days’ abstinence.

When the men’s sperm was re-assessed on the seventh day, Greening found that 81 percent men had an average 12 percent decrease in their sperm DNA damage, while 19 percent men and an average increase in damage of nearly 10 percent. The average for the whole group dropped to 26 percent DFI.

“Although the mean average was 26 percent which is in the ‘fair’ range for sperm quality, this included 18 percent of men whose sperm DNA damage increased as well as those whose DNA damage decreased,” Greening said.

“Amongst the men whose damage decreased, their average dropped by 12 percent to just under 23 percent DFI, which puts them in the ‘good’ range.

Also, more men moved into the ‘good’ range and out of the ‘poor’ or ‘fair’ range. These changes were substantial and statistically highly significant.

“In addition, we found that although frequent ejaculation decreased semen volume and sperm concentrations, it did not compromise sperm motility and, in fact, this rose slightly but significantly.

“Further research is required to see whether the improvement in these men’s sperm quality translates into better pregnancy rates, but other, previous studies have shown the relationship between sperm DNA damage and pregnancy rates,” he added.

Greening said he thought the reason why sperm quality improved with frequent ejaculation was because the sperm had a shorter exposure in the testicular ducts and epididymis to reactive oxygen species – very small molecules, high levels of which can damage cells.

“The remainder of the men who had an increase in DFI might have a different explanation for their sperm DNA damage,” he said.

The study has been presented at the 25th annual meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Amsterdam. (ANI)

Jason Bateman bashful about onscreen kiss with Jennifer Aniston

Washington, May 12 (ANI): Hollywood Actor Jason Bateman might have kissed a lot of actress onscreen, but as far as his onscreen kiss with Jennifer Aniston in ‘The Baster’ is concerned, he is pretty bashful.

Though Bateman did not emphasize much about the kiss he definitely lauded Jennifer’s kissing abilities.

“It felt … It was a good scene, I’ll say that. It was a good scene,” People magazine quoted him as saying.

Bateman revealed that he had been friends with Jennifer since he worked with her in the ‘Break-Up’.

He also said that working with Jennifer again was fun.

“It’s nice to finally work together. I think we just had one scene in The Break-Up. It’s been a lot of fun,” he said.

‘The Baster’ is about a single, 40-year-old woman who decides to have a child via a sperm donor, but her friend (played by Bateman) surreptitiously replaces her donor’s semen with his own. (ANI)

Semen stains nail Malay dad raping daughter for 4 years since age 12

Kuala Lumpur, May 8 (ANI): Ordeal of a 16-year-old Malay girl at the hands of her father emerged when her mother spotted stains of semen on her daughter’s bed and tracksuit.

The chef mum, 49, then inspected her husband’s pants in their bedroom at their flat in Paroi and found similar stains.

After the horrifying finding, on March 8, the mum confronted her daughter who confessed that her 52-year-old father had repeatedly raped her since she was 12 years old.

According to the victim, her father had been raping her even when they were staying in Kuala Pilah before they moved to the flat in Paroi.

Later a report was lodged at the Seremban 2 police station on April 8, and the girl, accompanied by her mother, was sent to the Seremban Hospital for medical examination.

The suspect was detained for questioning on Monday.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Saiful Azly Kamaruddin said if not for the mother, the victim would have continued to suffer in silence.

“The mother’s actions led police to detain the suspect, a lorry driver, who is being held for questioning till May 10. All this while, the child told us that she was forced to keep the secret after being threatened by the suspect,” the New Straits Times Online quoted him, as saying. (ANI)

Hot climates make for more baby girls, colder boys

London, Apr 1 (ANI): If you and your husband want a baby boy, then go live in the hills, suggests a new study.

A research has found that women living in cooler climates are more likely to give birth to boys than those in the tropics.

The study, which has for the first time demonstrated that latitude affects the sex of human babies, was based on global birth data collected by the CIA between 1997 and 2006 in 202 countries.

The global average from the data worked out at 51.3 per cent of all births being boys, or 105 for every 100 girls born. At tropical latitudes, the ratio of males born fell to 51.1 per cent, compared with 51.3 per cent in temperate and subarctic latitudes – the same as the global average.

“Of the 20 countries with the lowest ratios, 18 were at tropical latitudes,” New Scientist quoted Kristen Navara of the University of Georgia in Athens, as saying.

And even though the differences might appear small, they translate into large numbers of babies.

Of the “girl-rich” tropical countries, the Central African Republic was the only one where more girls than boys were born in the 10-year study, with a ratio of 0.49 per cent. Navara pointed out that although this figure appears small, it translated in 2006, for example, into 1400 fewer boys than if the ratio was 50:50.

The reason for the result, however, remains elusive.

“It’s very difficult to explain,” says Navara.

She speculates that the most likely drivers are the longer, less variable day lengths, and higher temperatures at tropical latitudes compared with others.

“We think this may be mediated by the hormone melatonin, which is responsible for causing major reproductive changes in response to day lengths,” says Navara.

“Treatment of rodents with melatonin results in pre-natal skews in the sex ratio, and it’s possible something similar is happening with humans,” she added.

Other possible explanations might be that temperature alters the survival of “male” or “female” sperm in semen, or perhaps favour the ability of one or the other to fertilise the egg.

The study has been published in the journal Biology Letters. (ANI)

Jennifer Aniston to star in “The Baster”

Washington, Feb 6 (ANI): Hollywood actress Jennifer Aniston has been signed on to star in fertility-themed comedy “The Baster” alongside actor Jason Bateman.

Will Speck and Josh Gordon, who previously teamed for the comedy “Blades of Glory,” will helm the project based on Jeffrey Eugenides’ short story “Baster,” which was first published in The New Yorker.

The film revolves around a neurotic and insecure man (Bateman) who finds out his best friend (Aniston) wants to have a child through artificial insemination.

He surreptitiously replaces her donor’s semen with his own and is then forced to live with the secret that he is the child’s real father, reports Variety.

This is the second artificial insemination film to get the green light in recent weeks.

CBS Films is moving forward with the Jennifer Lopez starrer “Plan B.”

Last year’s comedy “Baby Mama,” also about a fertility-challenged woman, proved to be a box-office success for Universal Pictures, earning 64.3 dollars million worldwide. (ANI)
