New “powerless” job description prompted miffed Miandad to quit

Karachi, Jan.29 (ANI): Javed Miandad, who quit from the post of Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) Director General on Tuesday, has said that he resigned from the post because of the job description devised for him by the PCB authorities, which did not provide him enough opportunity to work for the promotion of national cricket.

Seemingly upset by the behaviour of the top PCB officials Miandad said : “I was hurt to know that as Director General, my role would be to look after domestic cricket and help develop the grounds.”

“The PCB can appoint a manager to perform those roles, they don’t need me,” The News quoted Miandad, as saying.

The recent controversy was sparked-off when the PCB sacked the captain of the national team, Shoaib Malik, after Sri Lanka handed over Pakistan their heaviest defeat in one day international’s at home by 234 runs.

Irked by the sudden dismissal of the national skipper, Miandad also resigned.

“You can’t kick out a captain on the basis of one or two matches. That’s like setting a bad example,” he said.

“The only way you can go forward is by giving your players due respect. There is no guarantee that Younis (Khan) will not suffer a similar fate in the future,” Miandad added.

He said that he had several plans for the upliftment of the national cricket in the country, but needed more powers to initiate them.

Challenging the capability of the present top officials of the PCB Miandad said:”If you want results from me then you have to give me enough powers. I’ve given more than 40 years of my life to cricket.Nobody in the Board knows more about cricket than me.” (ANI)

Multi-touch patent won by Apple

Multi-touch patent won by Apple It has recently been learnt that the American patent (number 7,479,949) for touch-screen control technology has been won by Apple. This will definitely mean some serious competition to its rivals while the users should prepare to get ready for cool surprises.

The Patent 7,479,949 has been awarded to Jobs et al and apparently, it will give Apple credit for detecting one or more finger contacts with the touch screen display.

Furthermore, the long-winded patent is also being claimed to the command system of iPhone and iPod, including finger or thumb swiping or twisting and spreading to enlarge pictures or rotate them.

It must be noted here that on 20th January, when the patent was issued; was just a day before the firm gloated over its seemingly recession-proof growing quarterly profits.

Tim Cook, the firm’s chief operating officer reported, “Apple can now legally stamp on any rival which tries to use its precious intellectual property without prior consent and lots of money changing hands. Not that Apple would want to crush its competition, oh no.”

United fight back to book final berth

London – Manchester United overcame a 1-0 first-leg deficit on Tuesday, beating Derby County 4-2 in the second leg to secure their place in the Carling Cup final by a 4-3 aggregate.

Kris Commons had given Derby a surprise first-leg victory, but they were blown away before half-time at Old Trafford, conceding three goals in a 20-minute spell.

Nani got the first with a spectacular swerving drive, although television replays suggested goalkeeper Roy Carroll might have done rather better.

John O’Shea, played onside by Gary Teale, rolled in his first of the season to make it 2-0, and Carlos Tevez headed a third from a Rafael cross.

Derby steadied in the second half, and pulled one back with an 80th minute Giles Barnes penalty, after Jonny Evans had tripped Paul Green.

Cristiano Ronaldo converted an 88th-minute penalty after a foul by Carroll on Tevez seemingly to make the game secure.

But Derby still weren’t finished, Barnes driving in a low free-kick in injury-time.

Tottenham Hotspur take a 4-1 first-leg lead to Burnley in Wednesday’s second semi-final. dpa
