Senior officials can spy on whistleblower site: CLP

The Northern Territory shadow Attorney General says it is alarming that emails sent via the Government’s whistleblowers website can be accessed by senior Government officials.

The blow-the-whistle website was set up by the Territory Government to encourage people to expose improper conduct and corruption.

But the website advises in bold red writing that sensitive information should only be provided face-to-face or over the phone.

Jodeen Carney says this is because government officials can read emails sent via the website.

“If that doesn’t ring alarm bells, I don’t know what would,” she said.

“And importantly it does call into question the security of the NT Government email system.”

A spokesperson for the Attorney General, Delia Lawrie, declined to comment

Laser security for the Internet developed

Washington, March 24 (ANI): Experts have come up with a new security system for Internet using a special laser that may help keep hackers’ prying eyes off for good.

Scientists at Tel Aviv University have developed a digital security tool with existing fiber optic and computer technology that transmitts binary lock-and-key information in the form of light pulses.

The device, invented by Dr. Jacob Scheuer, TAU’s School of Electrical Engineering, allegedly ensures that a shared key code can be unlocked by the sender and receiver, and absolutely nobody else.

Dr. Scheuer explained: “Rather than developing the lock or the key, we”ve developed a system which acts as a type of key bearer.”

The researchers continued: “The trick is for those at either end of the fiber optic link to send different laser signals they can distinguish between, but which look identical to an eavesdropper.”

Dr. Scheuer added: “We”ve already published the theoretical idea and now have developed a preliminary demonstration in my lab. Once both parties have the key they need, they could send information without any chance of detection. We were able to demonstrate that, if it”s done right, the system could be absolutely secure. Even with a quantum computer of the future, a hacker couldn”t decipher the key.”

The findings were due to be presented at the next laser and electro-optics conference at the Conference for Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO) in San Jose, California. (ANI)

Ryan Reynolds still buzzing over Samuel L. Jackson’s ‘beehive’ wedding gift

Washington, June 19 (ANI): Film and TV star Ryan Reynolds is still buzzing over a beehive full of the singing insects that he got as a wedding gift from Samuel L. Jackson last year.

The actor had asked celebrity guests to forgo showering them with wedding gifts when he married Hollywood siren Scarlett Johansson in a remote location just outside of his native Vancouver, Canada, in September last year.

He has revealed that he was shocked to find a box of bees left in his backyard.

“Someone came to my door and said, ‘I have a gift for you in my trunk from Samuel L. Jackson.’ He comes back from the trunk and it’s humming an insane degree. And he tells me, ‘Mr. Jackson would like you to have this beehive.’ So he hands me a couple of beekeeping outfits and a lifetime subscription to the Beekeepers Journal. And the next thing I know, I’m making honey,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

Reynolds, however, now feels that Jackson has provided him with an excellent way to scare away unwanted visitors.

“It’s actually a great security system. Some people are afraid of security systems, some people afraid of guard dogs, but I don’t know anyone who’s not afraid of swarms of bees,” he says. (ANI)

Woman mauled by Berlin polar bear in intensive care

Berlin – A 32-year old woman who was attacked by a polar bear after she had jumped into the polar bear enclosure at Berlin Zoo was in intensive care Sunday, where she was being treated for bites and cuts to her arm, back and legs. The woman had climbed over an embankment then jumped into the water of the polar bears’ enclosure during feeding time on Friday.

One of the bears immediately spotted her and swam across, then bit the woman several times in the arms and legs before zoo attendants were able to shoo the animal away and pull her from the water.

Berlin Zoo biologist Heiner Kloes criticised the “completely irresponsible behaviour” of some visitors, saying that the behaviour of the woman “endangered the employees and the animals.”

Kloes said in an emergency the zoo had guns which they would have used to shoot the bear, to prevent further injury to the woman.

However the biologist, who was also the duty officer in charge during Friday’s incident, showed sympathy for the animal.

“The polar bear behaved correctly,” Kloes said, adding, “It was curious, nibbled a bit, felt and had a look to see what else would happen.”

He said the zoo’s security system had worked well. Staff arrived on the scene immediately and hit the bear on the nose with poles to distract him, so they could save the woman.

The woman is now under observation in intensive care. While her injuries were not considered life threatening, there was a high risk of infection from the cuts and bites, daily Berliner Kurier reported.

Berlin Zoo is the home of polar bear Knut, who achieved global fame when a keeper hand-reared the cub for 108 days.

The zoo confirmed that the bear involved in Friday’s attack was not Knut, nor his mother. (dpa)

Pak says its nuclear assets are safe

Islamabad, Mar. 13 (ANI): Rejecting concerns of the international community, Pakistan has declared that its nuclear assets are safe as an elaborate command-and-control system was in place to safeguard the strategic arsenal.

“Our command-and-control system is very effective, and we do not need foreign assistance to protect and safeguard our strategic assets,” the Daily Times quoted Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit, as saying.

Basit claimed that the international community had praised Pakistan’s multi-layered security system.

“The concerns … we, firmly believe, are farfetched,” he said.

Meanwhile, Basit informed that Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi would leave for Prague on Friday to attend a Pakistan-EU ‘ministerial troika meeting’.

“Czech Foreign Minister Schwarzenberg will lead the EU delegation, accompanied by Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt … as well as senior officials from the EU Commission,” he said.

On China-Tibet issue, Basit said Pakistan strictly adhered to the ‘one-China policy’ and recognised Tibet as an inalienable part of China. (ANI)

Robinho turns his home into a fortress

London, Jan. 31 (ANI): Fearing that his family might become a target of hate, Brazilian football ace Robinho has beefed up security at his home.

In the wake of him being reportedly involved in the rape of a Leeds girl, Robintho has arranged for a new alarm and security system to be installed at the family’s rented barn conversion in Mobberley, Cheshire, The Star reported.

A Manchester city club insider said, “Security is a key issue for all our players and it’s no surprise Robi wants to step up his. He’s obviously very concerned about the welfare of his wife, child and himself at this particular time.”

West Yorkshire Police quizzed Robinho for four hours after he was accused for raping an 18-year-old student in the VIP area of The Space nightclub in Leeds on January 14.

The Samba striker denied the claim and has pledged to help investigators.

The 160,000-pounds-a-week player went with pals and his wife Vivian to check out the band – fronted by Lewis Hamilton’s girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger, 30 – at Manchester’s MEN Arena for the latest leg of their Doll Domination Tour.

He delighted fans by signing autographs at a Pussycat Dolls concert in Manchester. (ANI)
