Brit woman in jail after Fatal Attraction-style attack on ex who spurned her

London, May 10 (ANI): A jilted British woman has landed herself behind bars after she knifed her former boyfriend in the groin for rejecting her bid to bed him after their four-year romance ended.

Ricardo Morais, 31, was driving through Lincoln when Tatiana Bastos, 28, struck him with a six-inch blade that sliced through three levels of clothing and left him needing stitches to his manhood.

Bastos had jumped into his car and refused to get out after he rejected her attempt to seduce him, so he drove to the factory where he worked in Newark, Notts, hoping that security staff there would help get rid of her.

Lincoln Crown Court was told that she suddenly pulled the knife out of her handbag as he steered the motor.

Morais, who had lived with her in Lincoln before the 2008 attack but now has a home in Peterborough, said the stabbing took place two months after he got a new girlfriend.

“She said she was going to kill me and then kill herself. I didn”t believe her and kept driving with my eyes on the road ahead,” the Sun quoted him as saying.

“The next thing I felt Tatiana leaning into me and felt the blade in my groin. She did not say anything. I felt I was going to die,” he stated.

To add insult to injury, Bastos lied to the police by claiming she knifed him after he tried to rape her.

Prosecutor Caroline Bradley told the court that Bastos had grilled her ex-partner for information about his new girlfriend.

“It was almost a situation of if she could not have him, then nobody else could,” Bradley said.

Bastos, from Lincoln, admitted unlawful wounding, possessing an offensive weapon and perverting the course of justice and was jailed for 32 months by Judge Michael Heath.

“This was a wicked thing to do. When you stabbed the knife into his groin, it penetrated three levels of clothing, his jeans, his thermals and his boxer shorts,” the judge told her.

“He and you are very fortunate that no more serious injury was caused because it is no exaggeration to say you could have quite easily killed him.

“You then attempted to orchestrate a false allegation of sexual assault against him to deflect the blame away from yourself. You lied and lied for days until the truth came out,” he added. (ANI)

German hotel dismisses Laura Bush’s poisoning claim as ‘publicity stunt’

London, April 30(ANI): A German hotel has slammed former US First Lady Laura Bush’s claim of possible poisoning, stating its a publicity stunt to draw attention to her memoirs.

George W. Bush’s wife hints in her upcoming autobiography ‘Spoken from the Heart,’ that she, her husband and staff members may have been poisoned during their stay in Hotel Heiligendamm in northern Germany, in 2007.

The leader was visiting the country for a G8 summit.

Laura writes that the president had fallen ill, leading the Secret Service to speculate a case of possible poisoning. However, doctors had concluded that they had all contracted a virus.

She goes on to mention several high-profile poisonings, and adds, “we never learned if any other delegations became ill, or if ours, mysteriously, was the only one,” reports the New York Times, which has obtained the copy of the book.

However, Christian Ploeger, a spokesman for the Fundus Group, which owns the hotel, said there was no evidence of someone trying to poison the premier.

“We see absolutely no evidence to support (these allegations) at all. The food was checked by security staff,” the Telegraph quoted him as saying.

He added: “I suspect that this may be just to try and sell more copies of the book.”

The book will hit stores in May. (ANI)

PCB protocol officer not allowed access to Sania, Shoaib by security officials

Islamabad, Apr.24 (ANI): An official of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) got the taste of the security cover being offered to the newly married sports couple Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik when he was denied the permission to receive the couple on behalf of the board at the Islamabad Airport.

According to sources, PCB’s protocol manager was present at the airport to receive Sania and Shoaib, but security officials denied him permission to enter the VVIP lounge.

“The PCB official told the security staff that he was the manager protocol of the PCB and was here to officially receive the newly-wed couple and help them come out without trouble but the security staff rejected his request,” The Daily Times quoted sources, as saying.

To add to the PCB official’s embarrassment, security officials told him that he was late and if he intended to receive the couple he should have been there before the plane landed.

The drama, which continued for few minutes, was witnessed by many present near the lounge.

“He informed the security staff that he was here to perform protocol duty assigned by PCB chairman Ijaz Butt but the airport officials said that no one was allowed inside the VVIP lounge,” said a man, who saw the whole episode. (ANI)

Indian cabbie charged for assaulting passenger in Melbourne

MELBOURNE: Victorian police today arrested and charged an Indian cabbie who allegedly knocked off his passenger.

According to AAP report, the 25-year-old passenger was involved in a heated argument with the cab driver around 10pm (AEDT) yesterday as they pulled over in Acland Street in southern Melbourne.

The report said a witness said the passenger tried to walk away but the cab driver chased him down and had to be restrained by security staff working at a nearby business.

The passenger kept walking away as the cab driver then grabbed a baton from the boot of his cab, drove up next to the passenger and allegedly starting striking the man repeatedly with the weapon, the witness says.

“Within a few minutes, many other cab drivers, all of them Indian, all turned up,” witness Karen was quoted as saying.

She said “And I could just see how out of hand this is all getting.

Paramedics said they treated the passenger for bruising and swelling to his upper body and took him to The Alfred hospital in a stable condition.

The 32-year-old cab driver was arrested and later charged with intentionally causing injury and two counts of unlawful assault.

Police said they cannot discuss the case further because the cab driver is facing charges before the courts.

He is expected to make a court appearance in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

Pak rejects reports regarding US Marines

Islamabad, Aug.21 (ANI): Pakistan has rejected media reports regarding US’ plans to send more Marines to its Islamabad embassy.

Speaking at a weekly briefing, Foreign Office Spokesman Abdul Basit said US has not yet formally asked for expanding its embassy compound or deploying additional security staff.

“We haven’t yet received any formal request as to how many additional personnel they want to position in their embassy in Islamabad and in their consulates in Karachi and other cities,” he said.

Basit said if any such request is received, it would be considered in accordance with the growing relationship between both countries and the enhanced security requirement amid the present condition.

“There was no upper ceiling between the Pakistan and US regarding the deployment of security personnel because it all hinged on the requirements of any particular circumstance,” The Daily Times quoted Basit, as saying.

According to media reports, Washington is planning to spend a whopping one billion dollars for revamping its main embassy building in Islamabad and increase the strength of its staff.

The Obama Administration is about to spend 405 million dollars for the reconstruction and refurbishment of the main embassy building and 111 million dollars for constructing a new complex for 330 personnel. A further 197 million dollars would be spent for construction of a housing unit for about 250 personnel.

Eighteen acres of land has already been acquired by the US for the project for a one billion rupees, and a Turkish firm has already built a 153-room compound for the embassy.

The US is also planning to send about 1000 additional staff to Pakistan, where 750 US officials are already stationed against a sanctioned strength of only 350 personnel.

But what is more worrying for Islamabad is that this surge would also boost the number of Marines by over 350.

Meanwhile, US Ambassador Anne Patterson has also rejected reports about deployment of US Marines in Islamabad, terming them as ‘baseless’.

Patterson said there were only eight Marines in the US embassy in Islamabad and seven more would join them for security duties.

She also rejected reports that former President Pervez Musharraf had asked US to deploy 2,000 Marines in Pakistan. (ANI)

According to The Sun, a staggering 80,000 fans crammed the Bernabeu to welcome Ronaldo following his world-record 80-million-pound move from Manchester United.

The ceremony, however, was abandoned midway when Ronaldo had to be whisked away as dozens of supporters ran on to the pitch.

Ronaldo, 24, was expected back on the stage before leaving with Real supremo Florentino Perez and honorary president Alfredo di Stefano.

Instead, scared guards, who decided not to take any risks as fans ran amok on the pitch and scuffles broke out with security staff, took him away. (ANI)

Door left open paralyses Budapest Airport

Budapest – Passengers at Budapest’s airport faced hours of frustrating delays on Monday – because security staff forgot to close a door.

Operations at Ferihegy International airport were paralysed because passengers on an early morning flight from the Syrian capital Damascus were allowed to mingle with those arriving from Schengen countries, spokesman Mihaly Hardy told the local news agency MTI.

“The Schengen and non-Schengen passengers were mixed up because a service door was unintentionally left open,” Hardy admitted.

All flights are subject to significant delays, and the timetable is only likely to return to normal by the end of the day, said Adam Hegedus, a spokesman for the Hungarian national airline Malev.

Though departures from Terminal 2 are subject to delays, no flights were cancelled and arrivals are not affected by the problem, Hardy added.

Hungary joined Europe’s open-border Schengen zone in December, 2007. Passengers travelling between Schengen countries do not have to undergo the same rigorous security checks as those from outside the zone. (dpa)

Unemployed German fined 900 euros for beheading Adolf Hitler waxwork

New Delhi, May 13 (ANI): A court in Germany has fined an unemployed man 900 euros after he knocked off the head of a waxwork figure of Adolf Hitler in a Berlin museum.

The incident happened just minutes after the opening of the Madame Tussauds museum took place in the German capital in July, reports the China Daily.

The 42-year-old man, who is an ex-policeman, pushed past security staff and ripped off the head, as he found the figure of the Nazi leader inappropriate to be displayed only 500 meters from Berlin’s Holocaust memorial.

The waxwork of a glum-looking Hitler in a mock bunker had stirred debate in Germany even before it went on display.

And critics argued it was tasteless to display a replica of the man who unleashed World War Two and ordered the extermination of Europe’s Jews.

Madame Tussauds said that the museum avoided politics, arguing Hitler stood for a significant part of German history and his waxwork, therefore, had a legitimate part in the exhibition.

The restored figure was returned to the museum in September, and is now displayed behind a glass wall.

About 25 workers spent about four months on the original waxwork, using more than 2,000 pictures and pieces of archive material and also guided by a model of the “Fuehrer” in the London branch of Madame Tussauds.

The wax figure has been cited as the latest in a gradual breaking down of taboos about Hitler in Germany more than 60 years after the end of the war and the Holocaust in which some six million Jews were killed. (ANI)

Greater Manchester Chief Constable Peter Fahy said the public should not fear visiting any of the reported targets of a suspected al-Qaeda plot over the weekend.

Mr Fahy said he and his family would have “no hesitation” in using shopping locations such as Manchester’s Trafford Centre and Arndale Centre.

Whitehall sources said the 12 men arrested across the North West on Wednesday were under surveillance by MI5 and police for weeks but the nature or potential target of the plot remained unclear.

One source said: “There was information of sufficient concern that action needed to be taken. Work is ongoing to get to the bottom of it.”

The official described reports the alleged plotters may have been sizing up “soft targets” such as shopping centres, nightclubs and football grounds like Old Trafford as “speculation”.

Security staff at the Trafford Centre said they had not been informed of any threat.

And a spokesman for the Arndale Centre said there was “no evidence” of any specific targeting of the complex.

Mr Fahy also said police had not uncovered a threat to a particular location, although the investigation was still ongoing.

“Clearly, there’s been some speculation about certain locations, particularly in the North West, concerning this investigation,” he said.

“There is no particular threat against any particular location and certainly not the ones mentioned in the media.

“I would like to say I would have no hesitation, or any of my family, in using any of those locations that have been mentioned.”

Eleven Pakistani nationals – of which at least ten held student visas – and one UK-born British national remain in custody.

Forensics officers are continuing to conduct searches of the raided addresses in the Cheetham Hill area of Manchester and Liverpool.

Manawan attack: Prior warning about terror strike ignored by Punjab police again

Islamabad, Mar.31 (ANI): The Punjab administration had specific information that terrorists could target police training and recruitment centers in the province, yet the militants succeeded in their plan which was evident from Monday’s strike on the Manawan police training academy.

The strike has once again proved that there were serious security lapses on part of the administration, as was the case when the Sri Lankan cricket team was targeted on March 3.

According to sources, the Lahore’s Military Corps headquarters had forewarned of a terrorist attack on police buildings and establishments in the province.

According to The News, the Warning tagged as “most immediate” stated: “In the backdrop of the gruesome terrorist act against the Sri Lankan team, terrorists may be prompted to exploit the uncertain internal security environment to perpetrate similar attacks. Apropos, terrorist activities may be manifested as following:
a. Terrorists may resort to similar tactics with necessary innovation to target high-profile defence/strategic installations, VIPs, diplomats and other government functionaries.

b. Serial suicide bombings followed by indiscriminate firing of small arms to cause massive casualties.

c. Abduction of VIPs, high-profile civilians or foreigners for a prolonged period.

d. Target important political/religious leaders,”

Moreover, the Punjab IGP, following an attack on the building of Police’s special branch on March 23 in Islamabad, in his letter to all the concerned officials had clearly raised fears about such an attack.

The letter stated a six point security arrangement to be made in and around police buildings and establishments such as :

1. SOPs for the security of all police buildings/establishments be followed in letter and spirit and no laxity be tolerated.

2. Snap checking of security arrangements of police buildings/establishments be conducted during day and night by gazetted officers.

3. The capacity/capability of the security staff/sentries be ensured to meet the challenge.

4. Security cameras/security devices installed in buildings/establishments should be in working order round the clock.

5. No unauthorised person or vehicle be allowed access to these buildings/establishments without proper checking and search.

6. No cluster of force should be allowed unnecessarily. However, if it is necessary, all precautions should be taken for the security of the manpower.

But despite such appropriate information, the concerned authority apparently turned a deaf ear to the threat.

And instead of acting on the information provided to them to prevent such attacks, top officials are now patting their own back for ending the Manawan siege in just eight hours. (ANI)

Britain sees increased threat of “dirty bomb” attack

London – The British government Tuesday warned of the increased threat of a nuclear or chemical attack, while unveiling plans of a greater involvement of the public in the fight against terrorism.

A government assessment of the terrorist threat said that while terrorism networks such as al-Qaeda were “likely to fragment” and might not survive in their current form, their ideology would live on.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, in a report to be submitted to parliament later Tuesday, said the “likely future direction” of the threat would involve the use of a so-called dirty bomb.

“Contemporary terrorist organizations aspire to use chemical, biological, radiological and even nuclear weapons,” the report said.

In these circumstances, the anti-terrorism fight could not be left to the police and governments alone, said Smith, unveiling plans for a wider involvement of the public in combating the danger.

She said hotel managers and security staff would be among the approximately 60,000 workers that would be trained “in vigilance for terrorist activity and what to do in an attack.”

Smith said the strategy would also tackle “anti-democratic extremist voices” in the community while supporting moderate groups which backed democracy.

People who may not have broken the law but nevertheless “act in a way that undermines our beliefs in this country in democracy, human rights, tolerance and free speech” should be challenged.

“We should argue back and make clear that these things are unacceptable,” said the Home Secretary. (dpa)
