Security guards drugged in $5 mln Iraq bank robbery

Robbers in Iraq stole 6.5 billion Iraqi dinars ($5.5 million) from a state-owned bank on Friday, assisted by a security guard who spiked his colleagues’ tea, police officials said.

“According to the information available to the security forces, one of the guards drugged his colleagues by putting a drug in their tea,” Najaf province security committee head Louai al-Yasiri told Reuters.

After the drinks were spiked, armed men entered the Rafidain bank in the town of al-Mishkab, Najaf province, shortly after midnight and made off with the loot, said Yasiri.

The drugged security guards have since recovered and no other casualties were reported.

The bank robbery followed a gold heist on Tuesday in Baghdad, when gunmen shot dead 14 people and stripped a row of goldsmiths of gold and cash in a bustling trade market normally heavily guarded by police.

The Iraqi government blamed the gold robbery on Sunni al Qaeda insurgents, trying to finance their operations.

Security officials say there are strong links between organised crime and the diminished but adapting insurgency.

Despite sectarian violence at a low ebb not seen since late 2003, shootings and bombings by militants and criminal gangs remain common.

Yasiri said police had evidence suggesting who might have been behind the bank robbery and the investigation was ongoing.

Indian couple kill son, commit suicide in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, May 20 (IANS) An Indian couple poisoned to death their two-year-old son before committing suicide in Malaysia, officials said Thursday.

The couple fed rat poison to their son before jumping to their deaths off the 29th floor of their luxury condominium in Brickfields, The Star newspaper reported.

The sprawled bodies of the husband and wife, aged 34 and 29, were discovered by a security guard on the ground floor of the building, while the child’s body was found in the master bedroom of the family’s 14th floor residence.

A bottle of Panadol, rat poison and a bloodied knife were found near the toddler’s body.

According to police, the boy’s father, who worked as a financial consultant with a private firm, had first tried to slit his wrist but decided to jump with his wife instead.

The family was reported to be in the country for less than two months.

City criminal investigation chief Ku Chin Wah said initial investigations placed the time of death between midnight and 4 a.m. Thursday.

Police are yet to ascertain the reason for their suicide, he added.

Chinese man sentenced to death for attacking 29 kids

Beijing, May 15 (IANS) A 46-year-old unemployed man who had stabbed 29 children at a kindergarten in China’s Jiangsu province, as part of his ‘revenge on society’, was sentenced to death by a local court Saturday.

Xu Yuyuan had also stabbed two teachers and a security guard at the Zhongxin Kindergarten in Jiangsu’s Taixing city April 29. The Taixing Intermediate Court Saturday found Xu guilty of intentional homicide after a half-day open trial, which was attended by over 300 people, Xinhua reported.

Xu told the court his motive was to vent his rage against society. He said he was angry over a series of business and personal humiliations.

Police found that Xu owned eight apartments in the city and was reasonably well off. ‘He is married and has a grown-up child,’ Sun Yun, vice mayor of Taixing, was quoted as saying.

He had leased four of his apartments and opened two stores – one for photocopying services and another which sold lamb kebabs – in two of his apartments, police said.

But he had plenty of problems in his life, police said.

Xu worked at an insurance company until he was fired in 2001. Since then, he had not worked at a fixed job for long. He was also fired by a security firm over a brawl in 2006, and had been detained in 1999 for making a hoax emergency call to police.

He was recently cheated by a partner, with whom he had opened a commodity shop. He lost more than 200,000 yuan in the venture.

IAF and NSG conduct exercise ”Black Eagle”

Manesar (Haryana), May 13 (ANI): India”s elite counter-terrorist force National Security Guard (NSG) the ”Black Cats” and youngest Special Force, GARUDs of Indian Air Force (IAF) conducted a joint exercise called ”Black Eagle” at the NSG Headquarter in Manesar, Haryana to hone their counter terrorist skills.

The exercise was conducted in two phases with the Air Force as well as with NSG.

Air Marshal J.N.Burma and NSG chief N.P.S.Aulakh jointly witnessed the exercise along with other senior officers. Both officers expressed that such exercise enhanced the skills of Special Forces and helped in building inter-operability.

The joint exercise was conducted for over seven days and covered skills of shooting and techniques to enable precision surgical strikes against terrorists, hostile elements and rescue missions.

The emphasis was on ”swift deployment” for which the teams used helicopters. The exercise promoted mutual cooperation and understanding between the two elite commando forces.

The IAF pilots performed difficult maneuvers with their machines and the NSG commandos successfully devised new tactics for various anti-terrorist operations.

The joint exercise of the IAF and the NSG was a thrust in the preparedness and ability to combat terrorism or undertake a rescue mission in any form anywhere in the country.

The first such joint exercise was conducted in 2008. (ANI)

Discrimination linked to depression among minority kids

Washington, May 3 (ANI): A new research has shown that children who experience discrimination are more susceptible to becoming depressed.

Lee M. Pachter, co-author of the study and professor of pediatrics at Drexel University College of Medicine and St. Christopher”s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, and his colleagues surveyed 277 minority children ages 9-18 years to determine the contexts in which they perceive racism and the relationship between discrimination, depression and self-esteem.

Participants filled out questionnaires that included 23 scenarios in which they might perceive discrimination, such as being followed by a store security guard, getting poor service in a restaurant or being accused of doing something wrong at school. About two-thirds of the children were Latino or African American, and 19 percent were multiracial.

Results showed that 88 percent had at least one experience with racism, and nearly 12 percent had experienced racial discrimination in at least half of the situations described in the survey.

The most common forms of discrimination were racial remarks, being called insulting names and being followed by security guards in stores.

Experiences were similar for Latinos and African Americans, boys and girls, and younger and older children.

“Not only do most minority children experience discrimination, but they experience it in multiple contexts: in schools, in the community, with adults and with peers.” Pachter said.

“It”s kind of like the elephant in the corner of the room. It”s there, but nobody really talks about it. And it may have significant mental and physical health consequences in these children”s lives,” Pachter added.

Researchers also administered the Child Depression Inventory and the Rosenberg Self Esteem Questionnaire to 52 minority children.

They found a significant correlation between perceived racism and depression, self-esteem and depression, but not between racism and self-esteem.

Pachter said that the next step is to look at whether discrimination creates stress that leads to racial/ethnic disparities in physical and mental health.

The study has been presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) annual meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. (ANI)

10-year-old British girl fights off two men who tried to rape her in Dubai

Dubai, Apr 29(ANI): A ten-year-old British girl was reportedly attacked by two men who tried to rape her near her parent’s home in Dubai.

According to reports, the girl had gone to look for mice in a sandy play area close to her home, when one of the sex fiends grabbed her round the waist while the other attempted to remove her clothes.

However, she managed to fight them off by kicking the men and screaming, before running away.

Her family found her more than two hours later with a security guard from the complex where she lives.

Meanwhile, a Bangladeshi national, Abdul Aziz, has been charged with attempted rape and has appeared in court in Dubai.

Aziz is said to have admitted that he stopped the girl, then tried to undress her for sex, but she escaped after struggling violently.

“It was an extremely serious assault. The prosecution say there was clear intent to rape or carry out a serious sexual assault on the girl,” The Sun quoted a Dubai court source, as saying.

“She was very lucky to escape and very brave to have fought back. Her parents were frantic when she disappeared and incredibly relieved when she was found,” the source added.

The trial has been adjourned until a date to be fixed next month. (ANI)

Media frenzy forcing Sania-Shoaib to venture out only at night

Lahore, Apr.29 (ANI): Hauled by the media and local people in Lahore, the newly wedded sports couple Sania Mirza and Shoaib Akhtar have been forced to venture out in the city only at night.

Sania said that though she is enjoying visiting places in the city during nights, she wants to walk out in the day as well.

“We are having to come out at night to visit the city owing to media hype. I enjoyed a lot the nocturnal view of the city. I want to walk in the daylight as well”, Sania said.

The India Tennis star said she is loving the Pakistani cuisine and having a great time shopping, but is upset by the media glare and all the ‘negative’ stories being circulated about her marriage functions.

Sania outrightly rejected reports regarding the invitation cards of their ‘walima’ reception being sold for hefty amounts, saying such stories were nothing but ‘laughable’.

The sports couple has appealed to the Pakistani media to stop intruding into their private life and respect their privacy.

Since their arrival in Pakistan, fans and media have hounded the sports couple, following them everywhere in the country.

“The media needs masala (spice) but it must behave in a way that our personal life does not get affected,” Sania had said earlier, adding that she was surprised over the media frenzy over her wedding.

“It is not like ours is a great big love story,” she added.

Shoaib also recorded his protest against the heightened media glare over the wedding, saying the media should not have sensationalised his marriage.

“Due to the continuous media glare, I and Sania will not able to live like a normal couple. Besides being a husband, I have to play the role of a security guard,” said Shoaib. (ANI)

Shaoania urges Pak media to stop looking for ‘masala’ in their private life

Lahore, Apr.28 (ANI): Newly married sports couple Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik have appealed to the Pakistani media to stop intruding into their private life and respect their privacy.

Since their arrival in Pakistan, fans and media have hounded the sports couple, following them everywhere in the country.

“The media needs masala (spice) but it must behave in a way that our personal life does not get affected,” said an annoyed Sania, adding that she was surprised over the media frenzy over her wedding.

“It is not like ours is a great big love story,” The Daily Times quoted Sania, as saying.

Shoaib also recorded his protest against the heightened media glare over the wedding, saying the media should not have sensationalised his marriage.

“Due to the continuous media glare, I and Sania will not able to live like a normal couple. Besides being a husband, I have to play the role of a security guard,” Shoaib said.

Shoania had to face a tough time wading through a huge crowd that had gathered to catch a glimpse of the celebrity couple at the five star hotel they were staying in Lahore.

As they passed through the crowd they faced severe pushing and shoving causing Sania to almost fall but Shoaib jumped into action by taking her into his arms.

The incident had even brought tears into Sania’s eyes. (ANI)

Brit mum chucked out of Disneyland for looking like a princess!

London, April 21 (ANI): A British mother is said to have been left stunned after she was forced by staff at Disneyland to leave because she looked like a princess.

Natasha Narula, who had worn a second-hand wedding dress when she visited the Paris theme park on April 1, was there to celebrate her 35th birthday with her eight-year-old daughter Drew.

But she got the shock of her life when a security guard ordered her to get changed – or get out.

Narula, who works as a dispensing assistant at Superdrug and is from Coventry in the West Midlands, was told that her dress might confuse children who could mistake her for a Disney princess.

She was forced to go back to her hotel and change into the clothes she had worn the day before. Drew was allowed to remain in costume.

“The security guards bustled us out of the queue and one of them said: ”I”m sorry miss, your dress is too pretty”,” the Daily Express quoted her as saying.

“At first I thought someone was playing a joke on me because it was my birthday and it was April Fool”s Day.

“When I spoke to a manager, she said I looked too much like a member of staff in character and it could cause confusion for the children.

“They said they were concerned children would think I worked there and would want to have their picture taken with me.

“I didn”t look anything like the characters in the park, it wasn”t like I was wearing a big Mickey Mouse outfit.

“How can they say I looked too much like a princess? I was wearing a hideous wedding dress I bought from Oxfam for 20 pounds,” she said.

Disney has a tradition of having princesses in its films, including Snow White, Beauty And The Beast and recently, The Princess And The Frog.

The theme parks use princess characters for shows and to meet and greet young visitors.

“I even rang up the park before we arrived and told them I wanted to come dressed as a princess. The woman I spoke to said it was a great idea and wished us a great time,” Narula explained.

“We saw loads of children on the way and not one asked if I was one of the princesses from the park,” she said.

Narula has written to Disneyland demanding an apology. (ANI)

Nurses campaign for more staff

Nurses in Coffs Harbour on the New South Wales mid north coast have today started a campaign for more staff at the Base hospital’s Emergency Department (ED).

The Nurses Association says its members are reaching breaking point because of the heavy workloads and low staffing levels.

The union says a key concern is management’s failure to meet a mandated nurse-to-patient ratio in the ED.

One senior nurse who does not want to be named says it is hard to believe conditions in the Emergency Department

“Waiting times in the waiting room are getting longer and longer and the mental health problems that should be on the wards are actually being locked in little consult rooms with a security guard,” she said.

“That’s not appropriate safe care for anybody, it’s not safe on the staff [and] it’s not safe on the patients.”

Revealed: Marriott bomber’s live suicide stream

The ABC has obtained a chilling new bomber’s-eye video of the Marriott hotel suicide bombing that killed five people, including three Australians, in Jakarta last year.

The images show teenage Marriott bomber Dani Dwi Permana was streaming video back to his handler Syafudin Zuhri up to the moment he confirmed the foreigners were within range and detonated his explosives.

Zuhri urges Permana on as the murderous mission begins.

As Permana moves through the hotel’s lobby, he uses his mobile phone to send a live video stream back to Zuhri’s phone. Zuhri uses a video camera to record the images and prays for the success of the mission.

“God keep watch over us and keep us close to you,” he tells the doomed bomber.

As Permana crosses the lobby the morning light reflects off the Marriott’s hard floor. A large work of art, seen in the hotel’s own CCTV footage, looms on the right.

Then the assassin pauses and checks his progress in the mission.

When a stranger crosses his path, Permana casually wishes the man “good morning”.

Then he starts to move toward the dining room where local and foreign businessmen held their regular breakfast meeting.

As he closes in he is challenged by a security guard but calmly explains he has come to see his boss, “Mr John”, to deliver the item he ordered.

He makes his way into the breakfast room where his victims can been seen gathered around a large dining table.

The fleeting pictures are the last known images of Australian trade official Craig Senger and businessmen Garth McEvoy and Nathan Verity.

Their colleague from New Zealand, Timothy MacKay, who died not long after the blast, is prominent at the end of the table.

The camera scans to the left. For a brief moment two people are silhouetted against a large window.

The fifth victim, Indonesian waiter Evert Mocodompis, cannot be seen at this point but he was obviously close by.

Then the camera moves back to the breakfast table as the bomber chooses his target.

The windows again dominate the scene and then it freezes. Zuhri’s handycam records the dull sound of the explosion in the distance.

As the cell members flee in a getaway car, the camera keeps rolling, aimed at the back of the car seat. They remark approvingly on how Permana responded when challenged.

The next images show the terrorists in a safe house recording the live TV coverage of their attack.

An image of a stricken Timothy MacKay appears briefly in the reports and then he too is gone.

Zuhri and the man who allegedly planned the attack, Noordin Mohammad Top, were killed in police raids last year.

But the alleged members of the support network are on trial and the prosecutors are trying to show how one was connected to the other and eventually to Zuhri, who recorded the chilling images.

A Sydney security guard has been charged with stealing money from his company’s armoured vans.

An investigation was launched after one of the security company’s audits revealed thousands of dollars were missing from a series of cash pick-ups between December 2008 and February.

Detectives arrested the 43-year-old guard yesterday morning as he picked up cash from a supermarket at Rose Bay.

He has been charged with 20 counts of theft and granted bail to appear in Waverley Local Court on May 4.

Rajasthan villagers appoint security guards to prevent water theft

Bikaner, Apr. 1 (ANI): Acute water shortage in Rajasthan is forcing residents of a village near Bikaner to maintain a tight vigil on village water bodies to prevent water theft.

Four security guards have been appointed to protect the pond round the clock from both outsiders and animals.

“There are 8000-9000 villagers in our village, and, they depend on the water for their needs. So, four security guards protect the pond by turns,” said Ram Lal, a villager.

Guards distribute water to villagers according to the number of members in each family.

“We guard the water from outsiders. The villagers have appointed us,” said Hari Singh, a security guard.

For five years, the area has not received any rainfall.

The state government has declared a drought in twenty-seven districts of Rajasthan. (ANI)

Court verdict on Kasab on May 3

Mumbai, Mar 31 (ANI): A Mumbai Special Court on Wednesday said it would announce the verdict on Ajmal Amir Kasab on May 3.

Over a year after the 26/11 attacks, case began in a special court here.

The trial of the lone Pakistani gunman Ajmal Kasab, and two Indians charged with taking part in the conspiracy concluded on Wednesday.

Special judge M L Tahaliyani would pronounce verdict on May 3.

The prosecution examined over 650 witnesses to prove their case that Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) carried out attacks by sending 10 terrorists from Karachi.

The court also examined four witnesses, including two from the elite National Security Guard (NSG) commandos, who led the teams in operations to fight the terrorists.

On February 26, 2008 police filed the chargesheet and the case was committed from magistrate”s court to a sessions court on March 9, 2009.

A separate court was established in high security Arthur Road Central Jail to hear the case.

On April 17, Kasab had pleaded that he was a juvenile, but the court rejected his claim after examining prosecution witnesses and experts and ruled that he was above 20 years.

Earlier this month, Special public prosecutor Ujawal Nikam opened arguments and said there was evidence to suggest that the 26/11 attack was a state sponsored terrorism by Pakistan.(ANI)

Steven Spielberg finicky about his security, claims book

New York, march 31 (ANI): Steven Spielberg is quite finicky about his security – the filmmaker keeps a brand new motorcycle parked at his office to make a getaway if a situation arises, a new book about DreamWorks has claimed.

The book, The Men Who Would Be King, has been penned by former Variety scribe Nicole LaPorte.

“His passion for secrecy sometimes suggests a burgeoning near-paranoia,” the New York Post quoted LaPorte, as writing of Spielberg.

The tome also makes some other claims about the Schindler””s List director:

· “In Spielberg””s office, hanging above his desk, a plexiglass half-moon keeps sound from reverberating so that his phone conversations remain ultra-confidential. When an assistant once asked what the funny thing over Spielberg””s desk was, a security guard referred to it as a ””dome of silence.””

· “When . . . Spielberg””s longtime editor views footage in the screening room, a black cloth is draped over the projection booth window to hide the screen.”

· “Every document that leaves the office — a script, development report, even a memo — is coded, so that should it somehow get into the wrong hands . . . the person responsible for the breach can be identified.”

· “When Spielberg isn””t at [his office], live-cam images are streamed to his home. There are also measures to protect against earthquakes or attacks, as Spielberg believes in being prepared . . . At one point, employees were given survival kits including gas masks and other amenities.”

Although, LaPorte could not get a chance to interview any of DreamWorks”” three founders – Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen – she conducted almost 200 interviews with current and former employees.

However, Spielberg’s rep has rubbished the claims made in the book saying: “This description is so far from the real world of Steven that it doesn””t deserve a comment. If the rest of the book is like this excerpt, readers can expect very little of what they read to be true.”

The book appearing on Houghton Mifflin Harcourt will hit stores on May 4. (ANI)

When WBA champion Haye gate crashed to watch his idol Lewis fight

London, Mar 31 (ANI): WBA heavyweight champion David Haye, who will be taking on American challenger Johnny Ruiz on Saturday, had gate crashed the London Arena 10 years ago to watch Lennox Lewis retain the world heavyweight title.

Spotlights will track Haye, now 29, as he walks to the ring to defend his WBA title in front of a sell-out crowd at Manchester’s MEN Arena.

But things were different when he and some of his friends got into the now-defunct London venue to watch Lewis destroy Frans Botha in two rounds.

“One of my pals paid for a ticket. He went in and opened a fire exit so we could all bundle in although a security guard was trying hard to stop us,” The Sun quoted Haye, as saying.

“We all ran round him and disappeared into the crowd before meeting up by ringside where I did a bit more blagging. I sat there just feet from the apron, a 500 pound ticket for nothing.

“We got there as Lennox was coming to the ring. He was a massive idol of mine. To watch him dispatch Frans Botha like that was brilliant,” Haye said.

“Back then I would never have thought in a million years I would be the next Briton defending the heavyweight title over here. I feel proud about it,” he said.

Bookies have Haye as favourite but he is taking no notice of the odds.

“In the heavyweight division, one punch can settle it all. You can come unstuck if you don’t prepare right,” Haye added. (ANI)

Another honour killing in Punjab

Amritsar (Punjab), Mar 31 (ANI): In yet another case of honour killing, a couple was shot dead in Punjab on the orders of the girl””s father for marrying against his wishes.

It has been reported that the victims Prabhjot Kaur and Pradeep Singh from Ferozepur, both students of Class 12 were shot dead by five unidentified gunmen, when they arrived at a local school in Amritsar for their board examinations.

The killers fled the spot after the murder and snatched the carbine of a security guard accompanying the couple. The victims were provided police protection on the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court after their marriage.

There are reports that as many as 15 bullets were fired at the couple, who died on the spot.

“This incident should not have happened. But the boy””s behaviour was not correct. He had left his first wife and also has a child. He married his wife””s niece. It is a case of personal enmity,” said Sukhdev Singh Brar, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Firozepur.

“A number of cases were registered against him. The girl is from the same family. We will round up those involved soon,” added Brar.

It has been reported that the government is now contemplating to include the crime in the IPC (Indian Penal Code).

The government had earlier said that a proposal to amend the Indian Penal Code to deal with honour killings is under consideration. However, it was not clear by when will the amendment come into practice.

In a landmark judgement, the Karnal sessions court on Tuesday awarded death sentence to the five accused and life-term to the leader of the Khap Panchayat for murder of a newly married couple. (ANI)

Jordan, Alex Reid to beef up their security after mob scuffle

London, March 29 (ANI): Kate Price and hubby Alex Reid will soon be shadowed by more bodyguards after the couple were recently caught in a scuffle with drunken blokes, it has emerged.

Price a.k.a. Jordan could do nothing more than yelp for help when she was torn away from cagefighter Reid as the pair tried to enter a nightclub.

The duo were finally left clinging to each other after bouncers broke up the mob outside London hotspot Movida.

The incident has frightened Jordan and Reid so much that they now plan to beef up their personal security.

“Kate and Alex just wanted to have as quiet a night as possible but it’s always bedlam when they’re together. They are not doing anything unusual but it does get heated from time to time,” the Daily Star quoted an insider, as saying.

The source added: “Kate only has one security guard at the moment and she knows the staff at Movida well so they all pitch in and help her get in and out.

“But now Alex is on the scene that may not be enough.” (ANI)

Body found under hotel bed

Police in the United States have discovered the body of a missing mother under a hotel bed, which had been rented out five time since she disappeared six weeks earlier.

Police say the body was discovered on Monday after bad odour was reported in the room.

“The room had been rented approximately five times and cleaned by the hotel staff numerous times,” police said.

The bed’s mattress and box spring are encased by a metal frame which sits directly on the floor.

Police did not specify exactly where in the bed the body was found.

Sony Millbrook was reported missing on January 27 after she failed to pick her children up from school.

Her family told police they had checked the hotel where she had been living and Ms Millbrook was not there.

A hotel employee told police Ms Millbrook had last been seen in the hotel while she had been locked out of the room for failing to pay, and her belongings were still inside the apartment.

The case was transferred from missing persons to the homicide department a week later and detectives interviewed two clerks and a security guard at the hotel.

Police say they subsequently arrested Ms Millbrook’s boyfriend on a gun violation and he remains a person of interest in the case.
