Pakistan says forces kill 23 militants in northwest

Pakistan (Reuters) – Pakistani forces killed 23 militants early on Tuesday in fighting that erupted after insurgents fired on troops during a search operation in the country’s northwest, police and intelligence officials said.

The search was launched after a suicide bomb attack on a paramilitary fort in Lower Dir district, where troops killed hundreds of militants in an offensive last year.

“The fighting began when miscreants opened fire on troops searching the area after reports of militant movement there,” Dir’s top police chief, Mumtaz Zireen, told Reuters.

Zireen said 23 militants were killed in the pre-dawn exchange of fire in the Maidan area.

Independent verification was not immediately available. Militants often reject and dispute casualty figures issued by officials.

Fresh violence after a relative lull has again focused attention on Pakistan’s performance against homegrown Taliban insurgents.

At least 42 people were killed and 175 wounded when two suicide bombers struck Pakistan’s most important Sufi shrine last week, the second major attack in a month on Pakistan’s cultural hub and traditional seat of power, Punjab Province.

Gunmen kill 14 in Baghdad gold heist – police

Gunmen swooped on a row of Baghdad goldsmiths on Tuesday, killing fourteen people and making off with gold and cash in a brazen daylight robbery, an Interior Ministry source said.

Police said at least ten gunmen armed with pistols, bombs and Kalashnikov assault rifles attacked five goldsmiths and a money exchange on a bustling shopping street in the Bayaa district of southwest Baghdad.

One attacker was killed in a shootout with police when they tried to escape in civilian vehicles, the Baghdad security spokesman said. He said seven goldsmiths were killed, but the Interior Ministry source said the death toll was 14.

There is usually a heavy Iraqi security presence in the area.

The spokesman, Major-General Qassim al-Moussawi, blamed Sunni insurgents linked to al Qaeda, saying they were in search of money to finance operations.

“It’s a terrorist incident linked to the crimes conducted by al Qaeda to gain financing through armed robbery and stealing,” he said.

He said some of the gunmen used silencers, killing the goldsmiths and stripping the stores of gold and cash.

On May 10 in Baghdad, gunmen equipped with silencers killed at least seven Iraqi soldiers and policemen in attacks on six checkpoints in the capital, part of a wave attacks that day that left more than 100 people dead.

The interior ministry source said the attackers also set bombs, a number of which police managed to defuse.

A Reuters witness near the scene said: “I heard an explosion and then I saw four dead bodies on the ground close to the gold shops.”

Overall violence in Iraq has dropped sharply since the sectarian slaughter of 2006-07 but bombings and shootings are still a regular occurrence.

Civilians fled shops and apartments near the scene of the robbery, and police sealed off the area in force to conduct a search operation. Moussawi said two gunmen were arrested. The Interior Ministry source said four police officers were wounded.

An Iraqi politician elected to parliament for the cross-sectarian Iraqiya alliance was gunned down outside his home in the restive northern city of Mosul late on Monday, further fuelling tensions after the inconclusive March 7 election.

Jharkhand Police recovers the body of Maoist killed in encounter

Latehar (Jharkhand), Apr 29 (ANI): Jharkhand Police has found the body of a Maoist near Ladi village falling under Barwadi police station of Latehar District here.

It is reported that he was killed in an encounter with the police personnel on Tuesday.

The gunfight between the police personnel and the Maoists took place at around 9.30 p.m. at Ladi village following an attack on a police patrolling team by the rebels.

At this, the police personnel retaliated and forced the Maoists to flee from the spot. They also recovered a loaded rifle near the dead body of the killed Maoist.

“A group of Maoists started firing at the patrolling team. Police also retaliated. During the search operation today in the morning, body of one slain Maoist was found and along with him a loaded .303 rifle was also recovered,” said Latehar Superintendent of Police

The Maoists had called for a 48-hour shutdown demanding the release of six Maoists, who were arrested earlier.

“The Naxalites are anti-development and have targeted the very instruments of development – school buildings, roads, telephone towers etc. They know that development will mean the masses, especially poor tribals, wean them away from the grip of Naxalites,” Chidambaram said.

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles may soon find wreckage of Air France Flight 447

Washington, March 27 (ANI): New hope has emerged for the retrieval of the wreckage of Air France Flight 447, with a survey employing the use of three Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) called REMUS 6000 to find the debris.

The vehicles, designed and operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), will use side scan sonar to map the ocean floor in long overlapping lanes, using a survey process known as “mowing the lawn.”

After the data from large-scale surveys are analyzed and smaller fields of interest are identified, the REMUS 6000s can then gather more detailed, up-close images on subsequent dives using their high-resolution cameras.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is part of an international sea search operation formed to locate the deep-sea wreck site of Air France Flight 447 and to retrieve the flight recorders from the Airbus A 330.

The search is expected to last for approximately one month.

Two of the AUVs are owned by the Waitt Institute for Discovery; the third is owned by IFM-GEOMAR of Germany.

These autonomous undersea vehicles are designed to operate in depths up to 6,000 meters (19,685 feet or 3.73 miles).

As each vehicle covers an area in a “mowing” type pattern, it employs side-scan sonar to survey up to 600 meters to its left and right.

Capable of staying underwater for up to 20 hours at a time, REMUS then returns to the ship, where scientists immediately download its data.

If the data contains evidence of any debris or other items of interest undersea, a REMUS 6000 will be dispatched to gather more detailed, up-close images using high-resolution cameras located on the bottom of the vehicle.

The mission will also employ the M/V Anne Candies, out of New Orleans, which will carry the towed side-scan sonar Orion and the CURV21 ROV, both operated for the US Navy by Phoenix International.

According to David Gallo, WHOI director of special projects and WHOI project leader, he is confident, “given the necessary time and resources” that the aircraft will be found.

He estimates that the investigators, using the AUVs in tandem, will be able to search about 30 square miles a day. (ANI)
