Sean Penn urges help for Haiti hospitals

London, May 21 (ANI): Sean Penn has called for more assistance at hospitals in Haiti to help the earthquake-ravaged nation deal with the upcoming hurricane season next month.

The ‘Milk’ star has been constantly on the lookout to ensure that the devastated people’s nation receives all the help they can get following the tremor, which killed hundreds of thousands of citizens in January this year.

Penn drew U.S. Senate committee’s attention towards the healthcare Haiti needs on an immediate basis, as several hospital have been closed down – and he fears the nation will be overrun with emergencies once hurricane season begins.

“In many cases, the bureaucracy of international aid is protecting people to death. I come here today in the hope that we will address with bold clarity the razor”s edge upon which Haiti lies,” The Daily Express quoted him as saying. (ANI)

Sean Penn ordered 300-hour community service for kicking photog

London, May 13 (ANI): American actor Sean Penn has been ordered to perform 300 hours of community service after he was filmed kicking a celebrity photographer.

He was filmed kicking the photographer in the leg at a shopping centre in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles last October. The photographer’s camera was also damaged.

Penn was also sentenced to three years of informal probation and ordered to undergo 36 hours of anger management counselling, said city attorney”s spokesman Frank Mateljan.

The two-time Oscar winner was also charged in February with misdemeanour battery and vandalism for the attack.

Mateljan says the community service can be completed through Penn”s earthquake-relief efforts in Haiti.

Penn was not present at the Los Angeles court and entered a no contest plea through his lawyer, Richard Hirsch.

“Prolonging this matter in the court system would not have been in Mr Penn”s best interests and would have distracted from his charitable commitments, specifically his work in Haiti,” The Telegraph quoted the lawyer as saying.

“Accordingly he has decided to accept the terms and move on,” he added. (ANI)

Madonna “cried and cried” watching ex Penn in ‘Milk’

Washington, May 4 (ANI): Madonna wept as she watched Milk – the movie in which her ex-husband Sean Penn played the role of homosexual politician Harvey Milk.

The singer said the biopic reminded her of the gay friends she has lost to AIDS, reports Contactmusic.

In an interview with the film”s director Gus Van Sant in the new issue of Interview magazine, Madonna says, “Milk was such a brilliant film. I cried and cried. I loved it. He (Penn) is amazing… He”s got a fire under his a**, that”s for sure, a bee in his bonnet… I could see why he would be attracted to the role and be able to say yes in two seconds. Watching Milk was such a trip down memory lane for me.

“What the movie triggered for me was all my early days in New York and the scene that I came up in… with Andy Warhol and Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat and Kenny Scharf. It was just so alive with art and politics and this wonderful spirit. So many of those people are dead now. I think that”s one of the reasons I cried.

“I don”t know why I”m bringing all this up, but I guess it”s just coming from that world in Michigan and the trajectory of my life: after going to New York and being a dancer when the whole AIDS epidemic started and nobody knew what it was. And then suddenly, all these beautiful men around me, people who I loved so dearly, were dying – just one after the next.

“It was just such a crazy time. And watching the world freak out – the gay community was so ostracised. But it was also when I was beginning my career.”

She tells Van Sant, “Your movie really struck a chord for me and made me remember all that. It”s a time I don”t think many people have captured on film. It”s a time that people don”t talk about much. And even though there was so much death, for me, New York was so alive.” (ANI)

Shakira to build Haiti school

Colombian pop star Shakira has met child survivors of Haiti’s earthquake as her charity prepares to build a school in the disaster-stricken Caribbean country.

The singer, who has already joined Hollywood actors and other global celebrities to raise funds for the victims of the January 12 earthquake, flew into the wrecked Haitian capital Port-au-Prince aboard a private jet.

At the planned site of her Barefoot Haiti school, she met about 100 children, some of whom danced to her songs. She then toured a camp housing nearly 50,000 people on a golf course. There, she met US actor Sean Penn, whose own charity is also helping victims.

“We’ve come to make all the preparations to be able to start the building of a Barefoot school here in Haiti,” Shakira said in a brief interview.

She explained that the school would be modelled on similar establishments created by her Pies Descalzos (Barefoot) Foundation, a charity that provides education, nutrition and psychological support to more than 6,000 Colombian children displaced by violence.

“We think we can employ what we’ve learned [in Colombia] here, apply it in this country which needs it so much at the moment,” Shakira added.

The Haitian school would be built and run with other non-governmental organisations.

The Haiti quake, described by some experts as the deadliest natural disaster in modern history, may have killed more than 300,000 people, the Haitian government says. It also left more than a million people homeless, many of them young orphans.

Shakira said providing education to Haitian children would be a key part of the reconstruction of the quake-shattered country, which even before the disaster was already the poorest nation in the Western hemisphere.

“We need to think about the future of this country and of how Haiti’s children can be useful to their societies tomorrow … Education is one of the fundamental tools with which to develop and rebuild Haiti,” she said.

They also have an 18-year-old daughter, named Dylan Francis, says a China Daily report.

Sean Penn and Robin Wright’s marriage is ‘laid on a strong foundation of love’

Washington, June 24 (ANI): ‘Milk’ actor Sean Penn’s wife Robin Wright says that their marriage has survived their troubled patches because it is “laid on a strong foundation of love”.

She says that they have worked hard on their relationship, which is why they could over come troubled patches, including two aborted divorce attempts.

“All marriages have their phases. It’s life. We go through it, if we’re married long enough. If you’re lucky you grow and you work it out,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

“There are lots of chapters in our book. You have to do the work in your marriage, but it has to be laid on a strong foundation of love.

“We have that, and shared history deepens that foundation,” she added.

The couple-who have two children, Dylan, 18, and 15-year-old Hopper-first called off their divorce last year.

And shortly after Sean had filed for legal separation in April this year, the couple reconciled and withdrew their divorce plans.

Robin insists that their relationship is now stronger than ever.

“It feels good now. If it didn’t I wouldn’t still be here,” she said.

“Sean is hopeless domestically. I’m the homemaker, and that’s fine with me, because I really like that,” she added. (ANI)

Mickey Rourke told Freida Pinto she was too young to be at Oscars

Washington, May 26 (ANI): Freida Pinto has revealed that Mickey Rourke advised her to go home to bed when they met at this year’s Oscars.

Despite the success of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, the 24-year-old is still adjusting to socialising with Hollywood celebrities.

“Meryl Streep was the first A-lister I’d ever met, and it was the most bizarre feeling in my life when I nervously said, ‘Ma’am, I’d really like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you,’ and she said, ‘I know exactly who you are.’ Since then I’ve met Sean Penn, Dustin Hoffman, Clint Eastwood and Ben Stiller,” she said. Friends of the couple think the move to turn to court stemmed from a fit of rage.

A pal said: “They love each other like crazy but they fight like crazy. They may have gotten into a fight where she said she wanted a divorce and he filed just to beat her to the punch, even though he doesn’t want a divorce.

“That doesn’t mean they’re suddenly happy and in love. It’s anyone’s guess where this is going.”

The alleged duo was recently spotted kissing for over 45 minutes at the Tower Bar in LA’s Sunset Tower Hotel.

Helena Christensen’s fury over ‘romantic link with Sean Penn’

“I’m quite honestly getting seriously fed up with being falsely connected with several men on Page Six: Josh Hartnett, Heath Ledger, and now it is insinuated (we all know what ‘befriended’ means on these pages!) that Sean Penn is another,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

“There has never been any intimacy between myself and any of these men, and I want this cleared once and for all.

“I have known Sean since I was in my early 20s and have met his wife several times. He has always been a friend and we have several friends in common. I have always respected his wife immensely and regard her as one of my favourite actresses.

“Please stop always making up these ridiculous insinuations about myself and all these men… It was very hurtful to myself and Heath when we were wrongly declared a couple, and I’m sick and tired of the Josh Hartnett connection as well. These people were or are close friends of mine, as is Sean Penn,” she added. (ANI)
