Brit women ‘too busy to take care of themselves’

London, May 10 (ANI): A new survey has revealed that British women do not have time to care for their looks. They barely exercise and almost always resort to takeaway meals.

The survey of 1,000 women by sweets firm Panda Licorice, revealed that 45 per cent spend less than 10 minutes a day on hair and make-up. They have only two hours per week for ‘me’ time.

Seven in 10 get dressed in less than a 15 minutes. Nearly three-quarters of women say they would love to have more time to themselves, reports the Daily Express.

Nearly 500 admitted doing less than 30 minutes’ exercise a week, with nearly one in five not doing any.

Only one in 10 women find the time to cook an evening meal from scratch, with four in five regularly resorting to takeaway meals. (ANI)

Scissor Sisters trash an entire album

London, May 8 (ANI): American pop band Scissor Sisters have revealed that they flushed a full-fledged album on which they had been working for 18 months.

Lead singer Jake Shears said that they scrapped the songs from their third album last summer and started from scratch, reports BBC.

“If it wasn”t something we could fully get behind and believe in, I think the band was going to be over,” Shears said.

“If we put out anything sub-standard it was curtains for Scissor Sisters,” he added.

“We worked on a record for about a year and a half but we shelved it. We shelved it about a year ago,” Shears said.

“I ended up moving to Berlin for a couple of months and we decided to start a new record from scratch, and we started it last June. So this record was written very quickly,” the 31-year-old singer added.

Referring to the collection of songs originally intended for the third album, Shears said: “In my heart I knew it wasn”t right, I didn”t really know what it was trying to say. It left me a little bit cold.” (ANI)

Avatar fan wants a girlfriend who speaks Na’vi language!

London, April 26 (ANI): An American man has become such an ardent fan of sci-fi movie ‘Avatar’ that he dresses like one of the big, blue aliens and speaks the Na’vi language.

Richard Littauer, a.k.a. Taronyu, a linguistics student, has even compiled a dictionary to help others learn the lingo, and he wants to start his own tribe here on Earth, along with a like-minded girlfriend. As soon as I saw the trailer for Avatar, I knew this film was going to take over my life,” the Sun quoted Littauer, from Edinburgh, as saying.

“I’ve spent a few hundred pounds at the cinema. I must have seen it 17 times, but I also pay for other people to see it because I want to spread the word.

“I study linguistics and when I saw they’d invented a new language for the film I was really, really excited.

“I was impressed by the fact they didn’t just use existing human languages.

“Star Wars was just lazy and has Ewoks saying things like ‘Please can I have a cheeseburger?’ in Tibetan and other things that don’t correlate to the events on-screen.

“With Avatar they have created a new language totally from scratch,” he said.

His ultimate aim is to join a blue race tribe on Earth, and find a fellow Avatar fanatic to rub tails with.

“Strangely, I haven’t got a girlfriend at the moment. It’s hard to find someone 14ft and blue – that would be perfect for me,” he said.

“But if I could find a girl who speaks the language and lives in my area that would be a dream.

“Hopefully one day I can meet one – that would be some wedding. There are also people I know who want to start a proper tribe living in the Amazon or something.

“I plan to get a few people together to go over to Cramond Island on the Firth and we’ll spend the night there and sing songs,” he added. (ANI)

Women outperform men when it comes to ironing

London, March 16 (ANI): Want your shirt ironed quickly? Well then ask a woman to do it. But if you want a plug changed in a rush, it’s a man’s job.

These are the findings of a new research.

Scientists conducted a series of three-minute trials between the sexes to see which tasks are more male or female friendly, reports the Daily Express.

Women outperformed men at ironing two shirts, threading six needles and making a bed from scratch.

However, they were also found to be better at negotiating a discount, winning an argument and arranging appointments within the 180-second timeframe.

On the other hand, men are better at changing a wheel, rewiring a plug and surprisingly faster at changing a nappy.

The tests were carried out by research analysts MindLab International.

It found clear divisions in what men and women could complete in just three minutes.

Women excelled in jobs which needed speedy hand-to-eye co-ordination and verbal reasoning.

Men did better at those jobs, which needed what researchers call spatial awareness, such as map reading, understanding self-assembly instructions and putting up a tent. (ANI)

Kick-off looming for Warriors

Western Australia’s northern Goldfields is a step closer to having its own team in the Goldfields Football League (GFL).

A community meeting in Leonora at the weekend set plans for the team, to be called the Northern Goldfields Warriors, into action.

The region’s sport and recreation coordinator, Gavin Isbister, says the Warriors should become the GFL’s sixth team next season.

“We’ll be entering the competition in 2011 so we’ve got the remainder of this year to get the committee strong, get a few procedures in line,” Mr Isbister said.

“We’re hoping to have a few scratch matches this year where the teams can combine and [compete] in carnivals for NAIDOC Week celebrations.”

Aarushi murder case: CBI reconstitutes team

New Delhi, Sep 9 (ANI): The CBI has reconstituted its team of officials investigating the Aarushi-Hemraj murder case.

CBI chief Ashwani Kumar took the decision in this effect, as he did not agree with the line of investigation taken by the team, sources said.

The new will most probably start investigation right from scratch as now even the vaginal swab of 14-year-old Aarushi seems to have been misplaced or not taken at all, they said.

Sources said that there was no semen, as alleged initially, in the slides sent to the centre and corroborative testing revealed that the material was not drawn from Aarushi.

Aarushi was found murdered in her Noida home on May 15, 2008. Their domestic help Hemraj was later found dead on the rooftop. (ANI)

Lindsay displays worrying scratch marks on arm

London, September 3 (ANI): Lindsay Lohan has sparked health concerns after being spotted with scratch marks on her arm.

The ‘Mean Girls’ actress, whose history includes alcohol and drug use, was seen with deep cuts near her wrist.

The 23-year-old set off the alarm as she took a break with pals at a hotel in Los Angeles, reports the Sun.

The wounds reportedly covered her bizarre tattoo that apparently reads “Stars, all we ask for is our right to twinkle”.

The star was also said to be looking “startlingly slim” as she displayed her bony physique in a white bikini. (ANI)

Moonbell – the way to make sweet music from Moon!

London, Sept 2 (ANI): Food for thought: What would music made on the moon sound like? Stop scratching your head, for JAXA, Japan’s space exploration agency, has come up with the answer.

JAXA has created a strange little applet on its Web site called “Moonbell”, which is free to use.

It takes topographic data gathered by the agency’s Kaguya orbiter, and translates them into patterns of ascending and descending musical notes, reports The Telegraph.

Users can either play a full orbit or select the “free scratch” mode, which allows them to map their own routes across the Moon’s surface.

Like a record player, Moonbell translates the bumps and ridges it detects into musical notes.

The resulting compositions can be interpreted by any combination of more than 138 instruments. (ANI)

Jon’s family expresses dismay over verdict, say he has been victimised

New York, Sep.1 (ANI): The family of Indian-born fashion designer Anand Jon has reacted with dismay to the 59-year sentence handed over to him by a US court for sexually assaulting aspiring models. They claimed that Jon has been “victimised” and that facts have been overlooked in the case.

The designer’s mother Shashi Jon said, “He is not capable of doing anything like this. This was beyond my belief that Anand has been taken in and arrested on charges of molestation”.

Defending 35-year-old Anand, his sister Sanjana said, “The fact that Anand is an Indian citizen and that he is being victimised is completely overlooked. So there is nobody questioning anything that we are facing there”.

“Every piece of evidence that is medical shows that nothing ever happened. There is no medical evidence that showed that anything ever happened,” she told TV channels.

Their family’s lawyer Majid Memon said, “It is very sad that this young boy, a celebrity from India, has to be left like this and being now convicted and sentenced to suffer for the whole of his life.”

Times Now quoted Memon as saying that all the girls alleging rape or molestation don’t have a “scratch on their body to suggest that there was any resistance or any violence by the accused.

Moreover, the complaints have been lodged weeks and even months after the incidents. So definitely this is a very dubious kind of a charge and unfortunately Anand was left alone and there was hardly any help.

Jon’s mother and sister will now move for an appeal,” Memon said.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Wesley today announced that Jon must serve 14 years in state prison-before he begins to serve a 45-year-to-life sentence.

The designer has been featured on the television show “America’s Next Top Model” and worked with such celebrities as Paris Hilton and Mary J Blige. (ANI)

Anna Kournikova gets into cat fight at Vegas party

New York, July 1 (ANI): Tennis ace Anna Kournikova reportedly landed into a cat fight in Las Vegas after an unknown woman threw a drink at her.

The Russian model was apparently partying with friends at Lavo after attending the Hardbat Classic table tennis tournament.

“(A woman at the next table) threw a drink at Anna. She felt Anna was invading her space,” the New York Post quoted a source as saying.

The 28-year-old was said to have “sprung into action”, and began yelling at the woman, leaving the player with alleged scratch marks on her neck.

“It was a big fight,” said the source.

Kournikova’s publicist did not return calls. (ANI)

Scientists develop egg-free swine flu vaccine

Melbourne, June 30 (ANI): Australian researchers have created an egg-free vaccine for swine flu that can be produced from scratch within weeks.

The revolutionary vaccine matches the virus found in the boy, 10, from San Diego who was the first US case of the illness.

Professor Anton Middelberg, of the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, claims that the vaccine, which is currently not registered for use in Australia, is different from conventionally produced vaccines because it is made in cell cultures instead of in eggs, reports ABC Online.

According to the expert, the plus point of the technology, developed by US company Protein Sciences Corporation (PSC), is the speed and potency of the vaccine.

Middelberg says while the vaccine contains the same amount of protein as conventionally produced vaccines, it contains virus protein rather than a combination from egg and virus. This implies that a single dose delivers three times as much of the virus protein as a conventional vaccine.

Its other advantage is because the vaccine is only made up of virus protein it opens up a variety of methods of delivery apart from injection.

Middelberg was amazed that the University of Queensland team as they could produce a batch of vaccine within two weeks of receiving the genetic construct of the virus.

“This technology shifts the timeframe [in vaccine production] from months to weeks,” he said.

“The vaccine can be made quickly when a new virus emerges or when it changes, and we can turn manufacturing on and off as needed. So we can choose to make vaccine just for those at risk of severe illness,” he added. (ANI)

How the body differentiates between a scorch and a scratch

Washington, May 20 (ANI): American scientists have shed new light on how the body figures out whether it has been stuck by a pin or burnt by a match.

Researchers from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) have found that this sensory discrimination begins in the skin at the very earliest stages of neuronal information processing, with different populations of sensory neurons-called nociceptors-responding to different kinds of painful stimuli.

“Conventional wisdom was that the nociceptive neurons in the skin can’t tell the difference between heat and mechanical pain, like a pin prick. The idea was that the skin is a dumb sensor of anything unpleasant, and that higher brain areas disentangle one pain modality from another, to tell you if you’ve been scorched or scratched,” says David Anderson, Seymour Benzer Professor of Biology, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Investigator, and one of the paper’s lead authors.

However, that was not sufficient to understand the control of pain-avoidance behavior, the researcher added.

“We were asking the cells what the cells can sense, not asking the animal what the cells can sense,” he said.

For their study, Anderson and his colleague Allan Basbaum, chair of the Department of Anatomy at UCSF, created a genetically engineered mouse in which specific populations of pain-sensing neurons could be selectively destroyed.

The researchers were then able to see if the mouse continued to respond to different types of stimuli by pulling its paw away, when exposed to a relatively gentle heat source or poked with a nylon fishing line.

When they killed off a certain population of nociceptor neurons, the mice stopped responding to being poked, but still responded to heat.

When the researchers injected a toxin to destroy a different population of neurons, the mice stopped responding to heat, but their sense of poke remained intact.

“This tells us that the fibers that mediate the response to being poked are neither necessary nor sufficient for a behavioral response to heat, and vice versa for the fibers that mediate the response to heat,” Anderson said. he researcher further said that neither of the two classes of sensory neurons seemed to be required for responding to a painful cold stimulus, like dry ice.

He said that research into pinpointing that population of cells was ongoing.

“This tells us that the discernment of different types of painful stimuli doesn’t happen only in the brain-it starts in the skin, which is therefore much smarter than we thought.

That’s a pretty heretical point of view,” said Anderson.

The study has been published in the early online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). (ANI)

Star Trek fan transforms his flat into space ship

London, May 18 (ANI): A Brit man is so obsessed with ‘Star Trek’ that he has transformed his entire flat into a replica of the starship shown in the popular television series.

It took Tony Alleyne eight years to turn his one bedroom studio apartment into the deck of the Starship Enterprise.

It all started as a therapeutic hobby for the 56-year-old devotee, following a painful divorce from his wife, and now he has decked the whole property as the Star Trek Voyager.he intricacies of Alleyne’s work could be seen in the life-size copy of the space ship’s command console, which forms the centrepiece of the one-bed flat and even controls the lights and sound effects.

Every morning, a voice-activated computer system turns on fluorescent tubes that illuminate bleeping panels and a replica of the “beam me up” transporter.

The windows of his home in Hinckley, Leicestershire, have been fitted with plexi-glass in-between layers of wood – creating dark space portals.

In fact, the doorbell has been customised to play a sample of Patrick Stewart as captain Jean-Luc Picard.

“Building this has been like a dream. I had a vision and I am really amazed at what I have managed to achieve with just hard work,” the Telegraph quoted Alleyne as saying.

He added: “It all started as therapy after I split with my wife – building every bit from scratch really helped me to deal with the stress of it all. I first started with the Transport Control Console, that took around two years to build- but it looks exactly like the one in the TV series. At the moment it controls all the lighting and sound effects and is one delicate piece of machinery, though it’s very durable on the outside.”

Alleyne, an interior designer by profession, said that he first got the idea to dedicate his flat to the sci-fi series when a friend gave him a Star Trek magazine.

Originally, he designed it as a replica of the USS Enterprise from the 1979 film ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture’, but later went on to give it a more futuristic look.

“My friend gave me a Star Trek mag and I became obsessed with having my own space ship. He laughed when I told him – I think he thought it was all a joke, but I knew I was going to achieve it one day,” Alleyne said.

“My whole life over the last few years has gone into this, I have given up absolutely everything. Some people might think I’m a bit of a sad individual but I’m not. I’m just really into Star Trek – it’s really my only vice in life.

“I always wanted to live somewhere like this – for me it is utopia,” he added.

The impressive spectacle in Alleyne’s flat has been made on a shoestring budget of around 4,000 pounds after splitting from his wife Georgina, 50, who still owns the flat. (ANI)

Students capture pictures of space using camera costing 56 pounds and latex balloon

London, March 18 (ANI): Four Spanish students have managed to take stunning pictures of space from 20-miles above Earth, using only a 56 pounds camera and latex balloon.

According to a report in the Telegraph, taking atmospheric readings and photographs 20 miles above the ground, the Meteotek team of IES La Bisbal School in Catalonia, Spain, completed their incredible experiment at the end of February this year.

Building the electronic sensor components from scratch, Gerard Marull Paretas, Sergi Saballs Vila, Marta Gasull Morcillo and Jaume Puigmiquel Casamort managed to send their heavy duty 43 pounds latex balloon to the edge of space and take readings of its ascent.

Created by the four students under the guidance of teacher Jordi Fanals Oriol, the budding scientists, all aged 18-19, followed the progress of their balloon using high tech sensors communicating with Google Earth.

“We were overwhelmed at our results, especially the photographs, to send our handmade craft to the edge of space is incredible,” said team leader Gerard Marull.

Completing their landmark experiment on February, the Meteotek team had to account for a wide variety of variables and rely on a lot of luck.

“The balloon we chose was inflated with helium to just over two metres and weighed just 1500 grams. It was able to carry the sensor equipment and digital Nikon camera which weighed 1.5kg,” said Gerard.

“However, when we launched at 9.10am on that morning, the critical point for the experiment was to see if the balloon would make it past 10,000m, or 30,000ft, which is the altitude that commercial airliners fly at,” he added.

Due to the changing atmospheric pressures, the helium weather balloon carrying the meteorological equipment was expected to inflate to a maximum of nine and a half meters as it traveled upwards at 270 meters-per-minute.

“We took readings as the balloon rose and mapped its progress using Google Earth and the onboard radio receiver,” said Gerard. “At over 100,000ft, the balloon lost its inflation and the equipment was returned to the earth,” he added.

“We traveled 10km to find the sensors and photographic card, which was still emitting its signal, even though it had been exposed to the most extreme conditions,” he further added. (ANI)

Upbeat India targeting Test redemption

Auckland (New Zealand), Mar.16 (ANI): The Indian cricket team will look to alter its far from satisfactory Test record in New Zealand when the first Test gets underway in Hamilton from Wednesday.

Having already won their first one-day cricket series on New Zealand soil, their upgraded squad is now confidently seeking to right another imbalance in the Test arena.

Until Virender Sehwag’s century powered India to victory at Hamilton last week, India had not won an ODI series here in six attempts harking back to the mid 1970s.

Their record in Tests makes equally grim reading – five fruitless journeys since the class of 1967-68 triumphed 3-1.

The current tour party, reinforced by batting luminaries Rahul Dravid and V V S Laxman, promise to pose a tough proposition on wickets unlikely to be as treacherous as during their 0-2 series loss in 2002-03, reports the NZPA.

India’s batsmen have already prospered against the cream of New Zealand’s bowling apart from James Franklin, and possibly Chris Martin.

And with Dravid already acclimatised thanks to a century as a ring-in for Canterbury, impressive tyro Suresh Raina should not be missed.

Laxman, opener Murali Vijay plus bowlers Lakshmipathy Balaji, Dhawal Kulkarni and Amit Mishra will also join the squad as the ODI specialists head home.

Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni welcomed the test players merging into an already buoyant squad who are at least publicly unaffected by the emphatic defeat in the dead rubber yesterday.

“It’s not about what you have done, it’s about starting from scratch again,” Dhoni said.

“In tests you need good consistent cricket over a period of time, not just one session.”

India seem in tune with that philosophy.

They have lost just two of their last seven series – a sequence that sees them ranked third in the International Cricket Council’s test rankings. (ANI)

Scientists move step closer to creating artificial life

London, Mar 12 (ANI): US researchers have claimed that artificial life could be created “within five years.”

Across the world laboratories are closing in on a “second genesis” – a breakthrough that would be one of the greatest scientific advancements of all time.

According to Prof David Deamer, from California University, although making a new lifeform from scratch is a tough task he’s confident it can happen in five to 10 years.

“The momentum is building – we’re knocking at the door,” The Telegraph quoted him, as saying.

A synthetic, made-to-order living system could produce everything from new drugs to biofuels and greenhouse gas absorbers.

The controversial research’s opponents claim the technology could lead to machines becoming “almost human”.

But there would be no safety issues for a long time as any initial organisms would be very primitive and need large-scale life support in the lab, reports New Scientist.

The breakthrough offers hope that they could create an entire cell.

According to Dr Anthony Forster, of Vanderbilt University, Tennessee, who is also creating a synthetic living cell in a test tube with Prof Church, “until you actually try this you won’t know”.

“Having said that we know cells can do it so we should be able to do it sooner or later,” he added. (ANI)
