Bangladesh celebrates its 39th Independence Day

Dhaka, Mar. 26 (ANI): Bangladesh on Friday celebrated its 39th Independence and National Day.

President Zillur Rahman, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Leader of Opposition, Khaleda Zia, issued messages to citizens on the occasion.

People across the country observed the day, and paid homage to the martyrs.

Colourful programmes were also organised to mark the day.

“Today, I am here to celebrate our Independence Day. Thirty-nine years back, we were liberated from Pakistan. We are feeling very happy and celebrating this day today on our free soil,” said Lutfurn Nahar, a schoolgirl.

Bangladesh, formerly East Pakistan, was liberated from Pakistan after a nine-month war of independence on this day.

The war continued for nine months and finally culminated in the country”s independence on December 16, 1971, when Pakistan”s Lt Gen Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi officially surrendered.

Approximately three million civilians were killed in the war. (ANI)

Artists sue over ‘fake works’

Two prominent Australian artists are taking legal action against two Melbourne art dealers for selling alleged fake works carrying their names.

Charles Blackman and Robert Dickerson began their case against art dealers Peter Gant and Helen Stewart in the Victorian Supreme Court on Tuesday.

Dickerson today told the court a drawing purported to be his was “clumsy” and out of proportion.

He says he is so convinced the work bearing his name was not by his hand that he would put his “life on it”.

Dickerson says he felt sickened and disgusted when he first became aware the work, Pensive Woman, was being purported as his.

“No, it is not,” he said during cross-examination, adding the suggestion was demeaning.

“It affects me very much, it makes me look stupid. It’s a very bad drawing [and] it looks absolutely, incredibly bad.

“What should have been a good drawing turned into a bloody awful one.”

Dickerson says he first became aware of the work in 2006 and told his son to contact the auction house selling it.

He says the work was placed back into the vendor’s hands, but in 2008 he discovered it was still circulating in the market.

Blackman was not in court, but is claiming that two works – Three Schoolgirls and Street Scene with Schoolgirl – are fakes.

Blackman and Dickerson are each seeking damages of $25,000.

The authenticity of the works first came into question when buyer Robert Blanche had them valued.

Mr Blanche bought the Blackman works from Ms Stewart’s Gretz Gallery in Albert Park for $13,500 in 1999.

In 2005, Mr Blanche bought Pensive Woman direct from Mr Gant for $10,800 after relying on his valuation.

Later that year Mr Blanche sought updated valuations for investment reasons, and was told by art experts the works were fakes.

The court heard Mr Gant, who ran Gallery Irascible in Carlton, had earlier sold the Street Scene with Schoolgirl, purportedly by Blackman, to another man in 1998.

But after the buyer received expert advice that things were “not right” with the work, he cancelled his payment and Mr Gant accepted the return.

Mr Gant then gave Ms Stewart’s gallery the work, along with Three Schoolgirls, and valued them at a total of $17,500.

The artists’ representative, Colin Golvan SC, says art experts have verified the works are fakes.

Both artists have settled their claims with Ms Stewart but their action against Mr Gant is continuing.

In 2008 Mr Blanche demanded a refund of $31,800 for the three works from Ms Stewart, which was arranged and paid for by Mr Gant who took back the works.

The artists claim Mr Gant engaged in misleading and deceptive conduct in breach of the Fair Trading Act, by falsely claiming the works were theirs.

They say their reputations have been blighted, and have also sought injunctions stopping the works from being sold.

The trial is continuing.

I wasn’t the only abuse victim: Hey Dad! star

Former Hey Dad! star Sarah Monahan says she was not the only cast member sexually assaulted behind the scenes of the hit show.

Monahan, who played schoolgirl Jenny Kelly, was nine when she began work on the series, which aired on the Seven Network from 1987 to 1994.

She told Woman’s Day magazine last week that a man who worked on the show fondled her and exposed himself to her.

She did not name the man nor did she say if he was a member of the cast or crew, but she did describe him variously as “big”, “powerful” and “well respected”.

Speaking on the Nine Network on Monday, Monahan said there were other other victims among the Hey Dad! cast.

“I guess I was the smallest and I know I wasn’t the only one. The others are just still not going to speak about it,” she said.

Monahan said she was her family’s breadwinner following the death of her father shortly before Hey Dad! began its run.

She said she was fearful she would be forced out of work if she spoke up about the alleged perpetrator.

“I knew he was a dirty old man. I knew it. But I was paying the rent essentially, so there wasn’t much you could do,” she said.

“And it was always, ‘keep it hushed because this is the most successful show on television and people don’t want to know that’.

“A lot of people knew, but it was ‘you can’t talk about it, you can’t go public, you can’t press charges’.

“Then, ‘he’s a very powerful person’ and it becomes he said-she said.”

Another alleged victim of the man has made similar allegations to Nine, saying they were inspired by Monahan to come forward.

Monahan said she intended to go to the police with that person to tell their stories.

“I think that [the alleged attacker] should definitely burn in hell. I think they should go to jail,” she said.

Nine confirmed a NSW Police detective superintendent is investigating the allegations.

American teen to undergo surgery on both wrists after heavy texting

Melbourne, March 22 (ANI): Heavy texting on the cell phone proved quite expensive for Annie Levitz – the schoolgirl has lost feeling in her hands and will now have to undergo surgery on both her wrists.

Annie, 16, who used to send over 100 text messages a day from her mobile phone, now finds it difficult to pick up some objects and has to wear braces on both wrists. She also takes pain-killing injections for relief.

According to doctors, Annie has developed carpal tunnel syndrome, wherein nerves in the wrist become trapped. The condition is usually linked to frequent typing on computer keyboards.

“I started losing feeling in my hands and they”d go numb,” News.com.au quoted her, as saying.

She added: “I”d go to pick up dishes and things and they”d just fall out of my hands.”

Annie, from Chicago, says she has now curt down her habit to 50 texts a day.

She said: “I know it”s not good enough, but I am trying.

“It”s not even good texts. It”s things like, ”Hey, hey, what”s up?””

Annie is now planning to get an iPhone since the touchscreen should make it easier to text. (ANI)

Schoolgirl assaulted at gunpoint

Police are looking for a man who indecently assaulted a schoolgirl at gunpoint in Sydney’s west yesterday.

The 17-year-old was walking along Cunningham Street at Fairfield at about 11:15am when the man confronted her, armed with a gun.

He demanded her mobile phone before assaulting her and running away.

The girl went back to her school and police were called.

The student has described her attacker as in his early 20s, of Asian appearance with a tattoo of a dragon on his left shoulder.

He was wearing black clothes and white shoes at the time of the assault.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

UK strip club axed for keeping schoolgirl, 14, as lap dancer

London, Mar 20 (ANI): A strip club in Britain has been stripped off its licence after it was revealed that it had a 14-year-old schoolgirl performing lap dances.

After it emerged that the Shadow Lounge in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset allowed the girl to put on shows for leering men and strip for private dances, councillors decided to shut it down until further investigations.

The girl is back at school and said the incident has “ruined her life” after receiving a barrage of abuse.

“I was told I could pick my own song to dance to and that I should chat to some of the men,” the Sun quoted the girl as saying.

“I was so drunk that I didn’t know what I was doing. I have had 151 text messages from people saying they are going to attack me and most of my friends have turned their back on me.

“We shouldn’t have been let in. I do regret it,” she stated.

The club’s Spanish-born owner Jesus Rodriguez-Casas claims he was duped into letting the youngsters in after they produced fake ID.

North Somerset District Council had an application from police for the club’s licence to be suspended.

“We have acted swiftly to prevent any further child protection issues occurring,” councillor Felicity Baker added. (ANI)

‘I was abused on set’, claims Hey Dad! star

The youngest female cast member of Australian television comedy Hey Dad! says she was sexually abused on the set of the top-rating program.

Sarah Monahan played schoolgirl Jenny Kelly. She was nine years old when she began work on the series, which aired on the Seven Network from 1987 to 1994.

Monahan has told Woman’s Day magazine that a male who worked on the show fondled her and exposed himself to her.

She did not name the man, nor did she say if he was a member of the cast or crew.

“This person used to sit me on his lap or tickle me, but then he started putting his arm around me and trying to do this reach-around and grabbing me, but at the same time trying to feel me up,” she was quoted as saying in the magazine.

“He was always there flashing me or trying to cop a feel.

“I quickly learned never to be alone in private with him, especially when he started flashing me.”

Monahan was her family’s breadwinner after her father died and she feared speaking up would mean she would lose her job.

Former co-star Julie McGregor, who played Betty Wilson, described Monahan as a “very popular little girl” and says she is shocked by the allegations.

“I had heard something but I had no idea the extent of the monstering … and I feel sorry for her that there was no-one that she could feel she could turn to,” she told the Nine Network.

“I think whoever this person was was very clever. They knew how to operate.”

Chris Truswell, who played family friend Gerald “Nudge” Noritis, fears people will think he is the alleged assailant.

Both Truswell and McGregor say they have no idea of the identity of Monahan’s alleged assailant and never saw any inappropriate behaviour.

Monahan now lives in the US making TV programs with her husband.

Family farewells Trinity with balloons and butterflies

A funeral service has been held for Bundaberg girl Trinity Bates.

More than 400 people packed the city’s Citi Coast Church to mourn the death of the schoolgirl whose body was found in a drain near her home two weeks ago.

Her father had reported her missing from her bed early that morning.

Family, friends and community members dressed for the service in Trinity’s favourite colour, pink.

“You had no fear, Trin.”

After the service, family and friends stood hugging and supporting each other before dozens of pink balloons and orange butterflies were released.

Allyn John Slater, 19, has been charged with Trinity’s murder. He remains in custody.

Coming soon: a horror story on American Fritzl’s victim?

London, Sept 20 (ANI): Publishers and Hollywood studios have begun a multi-million dollar bidding war for the rights to sex slave Jaycee Dugard’s horrifying life story.

Fresh details of the American Fritzl’s victim have emerged, including that in the early days of her captivity, the terrified schoolgirl was so hungry she ate bugs and worms in the rambling back garden where she was held in tents and lock-up sheds, reports The Daily Express.

She had to use a garden hose to shower outside, even in winters, say detectives guarding her and her two daughters, fathered by kidnapper Phillip Garrido.

However, the public apparently is desperate for the full story of how Jaycee, now 29, survived after being snatched on her way to a school bus stop when she was only 11.

A New York literary agent, who estimates the book and film rights to be worth up to 12million dollars, said: “You couldn’t dream up a script like this. Americans can’t wait to hear the story from the girl who lived it.”

A Hollywood studio producer said: “Everyone is in the market for this story. Poor Jaycee’s life may have been hell for 18 years but she’ll never want for anything for the rest of it.”

Garrido, a registered sex offender, has been linked to six child abductions and murders stretching back years within a 400-mile radius of the ramshackle home in Antioch, California, where Jaycee was held. (ANI)

US Fritzl being probed for murder of 10 prostitutes

New York, Aug 29 (ANI): As more details of Phillip Garrido, who kidnapped a girl 18 years ago and made her his sex slave, emerged, police are now eyeing him as the possible serial killer of 10 prostitutes in Northern California in the 1990s.

The police are looking over Jaycee Lee Dugard’s alleged abductor’s home in Antioch, Calif., searching for clues in the unsolved hooker murders.

Detectives have long thought the killings in both Antioch and the nearby town of Pittsburg were the work of a serial killer but have never had a clear suspect.

According to the authorities, several of the slain women’s bodies were found near an industrial park where Garrido, 58, worked in the 1990s, and one of the victims was a 15-year-old schoolgirl who disappeared after leaving a party in Antioch in 1999.

Cops had missed the chance to rescue Dugard on November 30, 2006 after a female neighbour called 911 to report that some people, including young children, were living in tents behind the house.

“Garrido was psychotic and had a sexual addiction,” the New York Post quoted her as telling authorities at the time that. (ANI)
