How life might evolve with “exotic” biochemistry and solvents

London, September 18 (ANI): Scientists at a new interdisciplinary research group in Austria are working to uncover how life might evolve with “exotic” biochemistry and solvents, such as sulfuric acid instead of water.

The research group for Alternative Solvents as a Basis for Life Supporting Zones in (Exo-) Planetary Systems was established by the University of Vienna.

Traditionally, planets that might sustain life are looked for in the ‘habitable zone’, the region around a star in which Earth-like planets with carbon dioxide, water vapor and nitrogen atmospheres could maintain liquid water on their surfaces.

Consequently, scientists have been looking for biomarkers produced by extraterrestrial life with metabolisms resembling the terrestrial ones, where water is used as a solvent and the building blocks of life, amino acids, are based on carbon and oxygen.

However, these may not be the only conditions under which life could evolve.

“It is time to make a radical change in our present geocentric mindset for life as we know it on Earth,” said scientist Johannes Leitner.

“Even though this is the only kind of life we know, it cannot be ruled out that life forms have evolved somewhere that neither rely on water nor on a carbon and oxygen based metabolism,” he added.

One requirement for a life-supporting solvent is that it remains liquid over a large temperature range.

Water is liquid between 0 degree Celsius and 100 degrees C, but other solvents exist which are liquid over more than 200 degrees C.

Such a solvent would allow an ocean on a planet closer to the central star.

The reverse scenario is also possible. A liquid ocean of ammonia could exist much further from a star.

Furthermore, sulfuric acid can be found within the cloud layers of Venus and it is now known that lakes of methane/ethane cover parts of the surface of the Saturnian satellite Titan.

Consequently, the discussion on potential life and the best strategies for its detection is ongoing and not only limited to exoplanets and habitable zones.

The newly established research group at the University of Vienna, together with international collaborators, will investigate the properties of a range of solvents other than water, including their abundance in space, thermal and biochemical characteristics as well as their ability to support the origin and evolution of life supporting metabolisms. Drought for Pakistan cricket is over : PCB

Karachi, Sep.16 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has expressed hope that the drought of international tournaments for the national squad would soon be over with several foreign tours and multi nation events scheduled for the next few months.

“The dry spell is finally over and that’s a good sign for our cricket,” PCB’s Chief Operating Office (COO) Wasim Bari said, adding, “A lot of positive developments are taking place. I must say that things are improving for Pakistan cricket.”

After virtually spending the last six months in hibernation, Pakistan has a packed cricket calendar in the forthcoming ten months.

Starting from the elite eight-nation ICC Champions Trophy beginning September 22, Pakistan would be touring three continents for a number of Test, one-day and twenty20 matches.

Pakistan is scheduled to ‘host’ New Zealand for four One-day Internationals and two Twenty20 matches in Abu Dhabi and Dubai next month. It will then fly to New Zealand to participate in a three match ‘home’ Test series against the Black Caps in November-December.

Then follows the tough tour of Australia, where they would be playing three Tests, five ODIs and a Twenty20 game. Later, in 2010, Pakistan would be seen defending their ICC World T20 Champions title in the Carribeans.

Bari also expressed hope that international cricket would soon return to Pakistan and claimed that the security scenario was getting better in the country with time.

“Our players will get plenty of cricket in the coming months.

It’s now time that they prove their worth. The security situation (in Pakistan) is getting better every day which is why I’m hopeful for an early return of international cricket here,” The News quoted Bari, as saying. (ANI)

Winehouse found in bed with ex-hubby by dad

London, September 8 (ANI): Amy Winehouse’s father Mitch is reportedly fuming after learning his singer daughter got back in bed with her druggie ex-husband.

Mitch, who suffers from heart problems and high blood pressure, was said to be raging after Amy’s security guard told him that she was with former jailbird Blake Fielder-Civil.

The former cabbie, who holds Blake responsible for his daughter’s previous drug addiction, apparently threw his former son-in-law out of her London house but not without an alleged threat to “punch his lights out.”

“Mitch hates the fact he’s reappeared – it’s making him ill. It’ll force him into an early grave,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

“Blake begged Mitch not to hit him when he chucked him out. Mitch was absolutely furious, he still is. He can’t believe Blake has wormed his way back into his daughter’s life,” the source added.

The source further said: “He thinks it’s the worst scenario for Amy. Just when she’s starting to sort herself out, the man responsible for dragging her into the gutter is crawling back into her life.

“Mitch is praying history doesn’t repeat itself. He is dreading the day he finds his daughter is back on hard drugs because of him. He’s worried sick.” (ANI)

Increasing residential and employment density may reduce vehicle travel, fuel use and CO2

Washington, Sept 2 (ANI): A new report has determined that increasing population and employment density in metropolitan areas could reduce vehicle travel, energy use, and CO2 emissions from less than 1 percent up to 11 percent by 2050.

The report is a new congressionally mandated report from the National Research Council in the US.

Assuming compact development is focused on new and replacement housing, as converting existing housing to higher densities could be prohibitively difficult, significant increases in density would result in modest short-term reductions in personal travel, energy use, and CO2 emissions.

However, these reductions will grow over time.

According to the committee that wrote the report, the most reliable research studies estimate that doubling residential density in a metropolitan area might lower household driving between 5 percent and 12 percent.

If higher density were paired with more concentrated employment and commercial locations, and combined with improvements to public transit and other strategies to reduce automobile travel, household driving could be lowered by as much as 25 percent.

By reducing vehicle use, petroleum use and CO2 emissions would also be lessened.

In order to quantify the potential effects of compact development, the committee developed illustrative scenarios, looking forward to 2030 and 2050.

If 75 percent of new and replacement housing units in the US were developed at twice the density of current new development, and individuals drove 25 percent less – the committee’s upper-bound scenario – personal travel, fuel use, and CO2 emissions would be reduced by 7 percent to 8 percent, relative to a base case, by 2030, and by 8 percent to 11 percent by 2050.

If only 25 percent of housing units were developed more compactly, and residents drove 12 percent less, then personal travel, fuel use, and CO2 emissions would be reduced by approximately 1 percent by 2030, and by 1.3 percent to 1.7 percent by 2050.

If in this lower-bound scenario, residents drove only 5 percent less, then personal travel, fuel use, and CO2 emissions would be reduced by less than 1 percent by 2050. (ANI)

Beefed-up diets of Asia’s middle class may lead to chronic food shortages

Washington, August 30 (ANI): Scientists have said that the beefed-up diets of Asia’s expanding middle class could lead to chronic food shortages for the water-stressed region.

According to a report in National Geographic News, the threat was highlighted in a study by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), which estimate that Asian demand for food and livestock fodder will double in 40 years.
Asia’s growing economy and appetite for meat will require a radical overhaul of farmland irrigation to feed a population expected to swell to 1.4 billion by 2050, scientists warned at Stockholm’s World Water Week recently.
At current crop yields, East Asia would need 47 percent more irrigated farmland and to find 70 percent more water, the study found.
South Asia would have to expand its irrigated crop areas by 30 percent and increase water use by 57 percent.
Given existing agriculture pressure on water resources and territory, that’s an impossible scenario, according to the study authors.

Scientists urge modernization of existing large-scale irrigation systems, most of which were installed in the 1970s and 1980s.
It’s estimated that India, the world’s largest consumer of underground water, has 19 million unregulated groundwater pumps.
Groundwater in northern India is receding by as much as a foot (0.3 meter) a year due to rampant water extraction, most of it for crop irrigation, according to a study.
More than 109 cubic kilometres of groundwater were drained from the region between 2002 and 2008, according to the satellite image-based study led by scientists with NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
“Governments’ inability to regulate this practice is giving rise to scary scenarios of groundwater over-exploitation, which could lead to regional food crises and widespread social unrest,” said Tushaar Shah of IWMI.

As for China, the country’s per capita “water footprint” for food production has almost doubled since 1985, according to Junguo Liu of the Beijing Forestry University.
“A switch from traditional rice and noodles to a meatier diet is behind the change,” Liu said. “Changes in food consumption are the major cause of worsening water scarcity in China,” he added.
Total water requirements for food production in China are predicted to rise by 40 to 50 percent in the next 30 years, he further added.
“Where do you get such a big amount of water? It is a really big question and a big challenge,” he said.
“If other developing countries follow China toward a Western diet, the global water shortage becomes even more serious,” he added. (ANI)

Scientific community wanted more tests, says Santhanam

New Delhi, Aug 27 (ANI): Top defence scientist Dr.K. Santhanam said on Thursday that the scientific community in India had felt after the May 1998 nuclear tests that there should be another test to complete the research.

Speaking to ANI after controversially revealing that Pokhran II tests were not entirely successful Santhanam said: “The Science and Technology Community as a whole wanted to have some more tests.”

“…but conducting a nuclear test is a highly political decision, and no matter the wish of scientific community may be, the political leadership of the country will have its say,” he added.

Santhanam also clarified that he had at no stage said the tests were a complete failure.

“I didn’t say it was a failure but partially successful,” Santhanam added.

He also said that in the reports given to the government, the scientists had mentioned the outcome of their experiments.

“The scientific community placed its reports about the out come of the tests. They are highly classified and the political leadership of the country is aware about that,” he said.

Maintaining his stand to go for more tests before signing CTBT or NPT Santhanam said, “Many people in the administration knew that India is in need of another test.”

“The energy released after the blast were measured and the energy release was much lower than what was expected by the designers. It was not a surprise to me,” Santhanam recalled.

India tested five nuclear devices including two-sub kilo category of thermo nuclear devices code named “Operation Shakti,” on May 11 and 13, 1998 at Pokhran in Rajasthan.

Countering Santhanam’s views, former National Security Advisor Brajesh Mishra said: “When they (scientists) said about the success of the tests in 1998, May 11 and 13, we asked whether they want to go for another test, but they (scientists) said No, and were satisfied by the tests.”

“It was very clear that based on their report only, we have announced it to the world. We have not lied to any one,” Mishra said adding it was only then that plans developed to discuss civil nuclear co-operation with the United States.

” In the entire scientific history, no country has gained 100 percent success in its first test of thermo nuclear device…if we get a chance, India should go for another test, especially of a thermonuclear device.” Santhanam said.

He, however, cautioned the country’s political leadership against signing either Comprehensive test ban treaty (CTBT) or Non – proliferation treaty (NPT).

The NPT is a highly discriminative treaty and divides the whole world into a nuclear haves and have nots, “Santhanam claimed.

Santhanam said the new Indo- US nuclear deal does not come in the way of going for more tests.

“There is one clause in the Indo- US nuclear deal that if the security scenario around the country changes, then we can go for a test, and the country’s leadership should take a decision to go for a test taking confidence of all the factors involved,” Santhanam said. By Shreeraj Gudi(ANI)

India’s top priority is to mitigate impact of scanty rains, says Pranab Mukherjee

New Delhi, Aug. 25 (ANI): India has withstood global financial storm and mitigating the impact of scanty rains is government’s top priority, said Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee here today.

“Despite the global economic crisis, we grew by 6.7 per cent last year. This year, we are getting mixed signals and indicators are good as far as industrial production data and business demand and investor confidence are concerned. The government, however, was not in a position to lower its guard, given the uncertainties continuing in the global economic scenario.

“At this juncture, delayed monsoon has impacted many parts of the agrarian economy. Mitigating the impact of deficient monsoon is a high priority,” he told a private TV channel.

Mukherjee said the process of economic reforms, which began in early 1990s, would continue in the right earnest so that the economy returns to a growth of over 9 percent at the earliest.

Commenting on the disinvestment programme, the Finance Minister said it was aimed at expanding people’s participation in the public sector units, and gathering resources was not the main objective.

Speaking on government’s borrowing plan, he said it would not crowd out private sector investments.

“In this regard government and the RBI are in continuous touch,” Mukherjee said.

The government has plans to borrow nearly 4,00,000 crore rupees from markets during 2009-10, a rise of about 50 percent over what it borrowed a year ago, to fund the widening fiscal deficit necessitated after stimulus doses for the economy. (ANI)

Saying ‘I’m sorry’ favourably influences jurors’ decisions

Washington, Aug 25 (ANI): In a new study, researchers at George Mason University and Oklahoma State University showed that apologizing for negative outcomes could lead to more favourable verdicts for auditors in court.

Assistant accounting professors Rick Warne of Mason and Robert Cornell of OSU found that remedial tactics such as apologizing or first-person justification can result in lower frequencies of negligence verdicts in cases against auditors when compared to a control group receiving no remedial tactic.

Apologies allow the accused wrongdoer to express sorrow or regret about a situation without admitting guilt.

Alternatively, a first-person justification allows the accused to indicate the appropriateness of decisions given the information available when decisions were made.

“We found that apologies reduce the jurors’ need to assign blame to the auditor for any negative outcomes to the client. It also appears that a first-person justification influences the jurors impression that the auditor’s actions were reasonable and in accordance with professional standards,” Warne said.

The researchers administered several versions of a mock trial involving a lawsuit against an auditor whose actions had negative consequences on a client.

In the scenario utilized by the researchers, the auditor performed an appropriate audit, yet the audited company eventually went into bankruptcy.

The researchers examined whether a defendant making an apology, offering a justification, utilizing both techniques or remaining silent led to the most favorable verdicts.

Research in psychology, management and medicine concludes that remedial tactics are effective when expressed directly to injured parties.

However, the new research expands upon prior findings by examining the effects remedial tactics have on jurors who are indirectly involved and cannot directly forgive the accused.

“We know victims often respond favourably to an apology, but our findings suggest that even unharmed jurors react in a similar manner. Offering an apology though is not synonymous with admitting guilt,” Cornell said.

The study will be available in a forthcoming issue of Contemporary Accounting Research, published by the Canadian Academic Accounting Association. (ANI)

Pak reiterates its demand for drone technology from US

Islamabad, Aug.18 (ANI): Pakistan has once again requested the United States to provide it with drone technology, so that it can carry out operations against the Taliban and other extremist groups in the lawless tribal region along the Afghan border.

n a meeting with the US Special Envoy for Pakistan and Afghanistan, Richard Holbrooke, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said Pakistanis were concerned about the US drone attacks inside their country, and that the missile hits were proving counterproductive in the war on terror.

“Drone attacks remain a matter of public concern in Pakistan. The US should provide drone technology to Pakistan, enabling its armed forces to take action against terrorists,” Gilani said.

Gilaini told Holbrooke the strikes by unmanned predators arepromoting ‘anti-Americanism’ in Pakistan.

Earlier, during an informal interaction with media persons in Islamabad, Holbrooke said Pakistan’s political scenario was fast changing, and expressed the hope that President Zardari will complete his term.

“I am obviously hopeful that he (Zardari) will complete his role as democratically-elected president,’ Holbrooke said, adding: “Democracy is critically important in Pakistan. Let there be no mistake about it, we support the democratic process.”

Underlining the need to focus more on Pakistan’s energy crisis, Holbrooke said the problem, if remained unresolved for long, could dent the country’s economy and create more trouble.

Holbrooke acknowledged the problem was too deep-rooted to be solved overnight.

“The crisis has been building up for 25 years and it’s quite obvious that it cannot be solved in a few weeks,” the Dawn quoted Holbrooke, as saying.

He said the United States wanted to send message to Pakistanis that it is concerned about their genuine problems and was doing all it could to help them. (ANI)

China’s carbon emissions may peak around 2030

New Delhi, August 18 (ANI): A panel of experts have determined that China’s carbon emissions output could peak around 2030 if the government continues to be serious about “strengthened measures” to improve energy efficiency and if it accelerates exploration of renewable energy.

According to the panel from the National Development and Reform Commission and the Development Research Center of the State Council, with the right policies, emissions growth could slow after 2020, with a peak around 2030.

This is the first time a Chinese think-tank has officially announced when it thinks China’s carbon emissions will peak.

The international community has closely watched the country’s carbon emissions curve because China and the US are the top two carbon emissions countries in the world.

The panel has advised China to invest significantly in low-carbon technology research and development, saying the strategy of developing such technology is “a stone killing two birds”.

“Only by using advanced low-carbon technologies can China’s greenhouse gas emissions peak around 2030; otherwise, the peak will be delayed and we don’t want to see the latter scenario,” said Jiang Kejun, a leading economist of the panel.

If the peak happens around 2030, the huge investment in low-carbon technologies could keep China’s economy growing at a fast pace and make China a global leader in cutting-edge technologies.

“I think China will become a major supplier of nuclear, wind and hydropower technologies and electricity transmission by 2030,” said Jiang. “And that should be a strategic goal for the Chinese government to pursue,” he added.

If China can achieve these goals, by 2050, its carbon emissions from fossil fuel “could fall to the same emissions levels as in 2005 or even lower”, the report said.

Jiang said that the Chinese government has been “on the right track” in making policy decisions to develop low-carbon technologies as new economic growth engines while countries worldwide are working on a plan by October to replace the Kyoto Protocol, which is set to expire in 2012. (ANI)

Stressed crops emit more methane emissions than previously thought

Washington, August 18 (ANI): Scientists at the University of Calgary (U of C) in Canada have found that methane emission by stressed crops could be a bigger problem in global warming than previously thought.

According to a U of C study, when crops are exposed to environmental factors that are part of climate change – increased temperature, drought and ultraviolet-B radiation – some plants show enhanced methane emissions.

Methane is a very potent greenhouse gas; 23 times more effective in trapping heat than carbon dioxide (CO2).

“Most studies just look at one factor. We wanted to mix a few of the environmental factors that are part of the climate change scenario to study a more true-to-life impact climate change has on plants,” said David Reid, a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, who co-authored a paper with research associate Mirwais Qaderi in the advanced on-line edition of the journal Physiologia Plantarum.

Reid and Qaderi analyzed methane emissions from six important Canadian crops – faba bean, sunflower, pea, canola, barley and wheat – that were exposed to combinations of three components of global climate change: temperature, ultraviolet-B radiation and water stress (drought).

What they found was troubling.

These stresses caused plants to emit more methane. In a warmer, drier world, methane might be a bigger contributor in global warming than previously thought.

When it comes to the greenhouse effect, methane could be considered the misunderstood and often overlooked orphan greenhouse gas.

Much of the attention has been focused on carbon dioxide, but more recently it has been realized that methane should also be considered as a very significant greenhouse gas.

Its concentrations have more than doubled since pre-industrial times.

While the growth rate of methane concentrations has slowed since the early 1990s, some scientists say this is only a temporary pause.

“Our results are of importance in the whole climate warming discussion because methane is such a potent greenhouse warming gas,” said Qaderi.

“It points to the possibility of yet another possible feedback phenomena which could add to global warming,” he added. (ANI)

Radiation from massive stars may trigger many more stars than previously thought

Washington, August 13 (ANI): A new study from two of NASA’s Great Observatories has shown that radiation from massive stars may trigger the formation of many more stars than previously thought.

While astronomers have long understood that stars and planets form from the collapse of a cloud of gas, the question of the main causes of this process has remained open.

One option is that the cloud cools, gravity gets the upper hand, and the cloud falls in on itself.

The other possibility is that a “trigger” from some external source – like radiation from a massive star or a shock from a supernova – initiates the collapse.

Some previous studies have noted a combination of triggering mechanisms in effect.

By combining observations of Cepheus B from the Chandra X-ray Observatory and Spitzer Space Telescope, researchers have taken an important step in addressing this question.

Cepheus B is a cloud of mainly cool molecular hydrogen located about 2,400 light years from the Earth.

There are hundreds of very young stars inside and around the cloud – ranging from a few millions years old outside the cloud to less than a million in the interior – making it an important testing ground for star formation.

“Astronomers have generally believed that it’s somewhat rare for stars and planets to be triggered into formation by radiation from massive stars,” said Konstantin Getman of Penn State University, and lead author of the study. “Our new result shows this belief is likely to be wrong,” he added.

This particular type of triggered star formation had previously been seen in small populations of a few dozen stars, but the latest result is the first time it has been clearly observed in a rich population of several hundred stars.

The new study suggests that star formation in Cepheus B is mainly triggered by radiation from one bright, massive star outside the molecular cloud.

According to theoretical models, radiation from this star would drive a compression wave into the cloud triggering star formation in the interior, while evaporating the cloud’s outer layers.

The Chandra-Spitzer analysis revealed slightly older stars outside the cloud while the youngest stars with the most protoplanetary disks congregate in the cloud interior – exactly what is predicted from the triggered star formation scenario.

“We essentially see a wave of star and planet formation that is rippling through this cloud,” said co-author Eric Feigelson, also of Penn State. “Outside the cloud, the stars probably have newly born planets while inside the cloud the planets are still gestating,” he added. (ANI)

PCB banking on India’s tour to fill its empty coffers

Karachi, July 9 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is hoping to revive its sagging bank accounts by hosting arch rivals India.

The PCB’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), Saleem Altaf expressed the hope that despite the present scenario where India and several other foreign team have refused to visit Pakistan due to the precarious security conditions, India would be playing a cricket series in Pakistan soon.

“It is a case of ebb and flow when it comes to Indo-Pak relations. In 2004, India came here after 15 years. But I personally don’t expect it to be that long this time. India could tour Pakistan as early as next year. It is certainly possible. Efforts are on to find a solution for this issue and I am quite hopeful,” The News quoted Altaf, as saying.

But it seems highly unlikely that India would visit Pakistan amid the current situation, where both PCB and the Board of Cricket Control of India (BCCI) at loggerheads following the ICC’s decision to shift 2011 World Cup matches from Pakistan.

The PCB has blamed the BCCI for influencing the apex cricket authority’s decision to shift Pakistan’s share of World cup matches to the other three host nations India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Recently, the PCB had also raised a strong objection over the BCCI’s decision not to include a single bilateral series with Pakistan in its proposed future tours programme (FTP).

However, Altaf believes that things would be sorted out soon.

“The ICC has decided to have a task force that will ensure that Pakistan don’t get a raw deal. We are hoping that things will be resolved amicably,” he said.

According to an estimate, the PCB lost about 42 million dollars when India cancelled its tour to Pakistan in March, after relations between the two neighbouring countries soured following the November 2008 terror attacks.

If issues are resolved, Pakistan will host India at least three times in the next six years which would give a whopping 135 million dollar boost to its depleted accounts. (ANI)

Govt. initiative to establish Power Exchanges benefited country: Shinde

New Delhi, July 8 (ANI): Union Minister for Power Sushilkumar Shinde on Wednesday said that the Government’s initiative to establish Power Exchanges in India has benefitted the country.

The minister said it happened by ensuring payment security, promoting competition among stakeholders, reduction in transaction costs by providing a common platform for trading, empowering demand side response to price signals and bringing about efficiency.

“Power is a high priority sector for the Government and policy initiatives will continue to promote competition, efficiency, restructuring and investment,” said Shinde while delivering the inaugural address at a seminar on “Journey to Competitive Markets” in the national capital.

Shinde said that a number of other initiatives have also been taken for empowerment of the State Load Despatch Centers, thereby, facilitating further growth of the Power Market.

These include setting up of committees by the Ministry of Power to look into various aspects to improve the infrastructure and other facilities in the State Load Despatch Centers and their ring fencing.

Organised by Indian Energy Exchange (IEX), the seminar was meant to mark its first anniversary and attended by several luminaries of power sector.

Shinde, on this occasion, said that during the year the total number of members and clients of IEX has crossed 130 and over 3,600 million units of power worth Rs. 3,000 crore has been traded through the Power Exchange.

The Electricity Act, 2003 has been brought about to facilitate private sector participation and to help cash strapped SEBs to meet electricity demand. It envisages competition in electricity market, protection of consumer’s interests and provision of power for all.

The Act provides for National Electricity Policy, rural electrification, open access in transmission, phased open access in distribution, mandatory SERCs, license free generation and distribution, power trading, mandatory metering, and stringent penalties for theft of electricity.

The minister said considering the present inter-State power trading scenario and the need to promote power trading in a free power market, Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) approved the setting up of IEX as the first power exchange in India. (ANI)

Loss of faith in Cricket Australia system convinced me to quit: Martyn

Perth, July 2 (ANI): Former Australian middle-order batsman Damian Martyn has revealed that he quit because he had lost faith in the system promoted by Cricket Australia. He also said that he could accept the way the board treated the players.

“I’d lost faith in the system and the way they treated guys and that sort of stuff,” the Herald Sun quoted Martyn, as saying.

He said he had wanted to finish earlier in 2006 against South Africa, but the cajoling of teammates and pre-Ashes hype talked Martyn into going on to the 2006-07 series against England.

He realised by the end of the second Test in Adelaide that he should have been more assertive in telling the team it was time to go.

Martyn’s exit, which arrived via a solitary email to Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland, was one of the talking points of the summer, and he admitted he should have quit after making a century against the Proteas in Johannesburg in April 2006, following his recall to the Test team.

“Yeah (retirement) was on the cards but we had to fly out the next day, quickly,” Martyn said.

“It really came as a case that I was over it (international cricket), but it wasn’t made easy for me to try and retire, so it was a hard situation and I just kept trying to do the right thing and you play and by the end I’d had enough, wanted to get out and get on with the rest of my life.”

The politics of the Australian team are complex, and in explaining why he told no one of his final decision, Martyn said there was no easy way to extricate oneself from that environment.

“They might’ve liked a fairytale phone call that morning saying ‘I’m retiring’, but I knew I couldn’t do that in a sense because I’d get talked back into playing, so it was like, what do you do?” he said.

“Everybody in the group, if you walked around a team and told 15 blokes what you were thinking of doing, of retiring or doing this or that, you’d have 15 different answers.

“Some will be your mates who just don’t want your mates to go, some probably want you to go, you get a million different answers, so it’s something you just have to do yourself, stick by it and deal with it.”

Martyn also expressed empathy for Andrew Symonds, who he described as a virtual kindred spirit and a victim of the machinations of a corporatised game.

“I think Symo’s one of those guys, a bit like myself where we just wanted to get out and play cricket,” Martyn said in an interview for the Wisden Cricketer.

“We grew up as kids, for me I was playing AFL in the back yard and cricket in the front yard, and cricket took off, and next thing I know I’m playing for my country so it’s not like it’s a planned scenario, you’re thrust into this and some guys handle it differently to others.

“They (the authorities) have just got to be prepared to maybe look after guys a bit better. ” (ANI)

Earth may become ‘Waterworld’ if rise in sea level continues

London, July 2 (ANI): If the alarming rise in sea level is anything to go by, the fictional world depicted in the Hollywood movie ‘Waterworld’ may soon be a reality.

According to a report in the Telegraph, this grim picture of planet Earth has been painted by climate scientists, who say that sea-level rise is now inevitable and will happen much quicker than most of us thought – and will last for centuries.

Even if greenhouse gas emissions stopped tomorrow, the oceans will continue to swell as they warm and as glaciers or ice sheets slide into the sea.

Scientists say that the “official” estimate of sea level rise by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – 20cm to 60cm by 2100 – is misleading.

It could well be in the region of one to two metres, with a small risk of an even greater rise.

“When we talk of sea level rising by one or two metres by 2100 remember that it is still going to be rising after 2100,” said climate expert Dr Eric Rignot, of California University.

According to Dr Stefan Rahmstorf, of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany, “”There is a very close and statistically highly significant correlation between the rate of sea level rise and the temperature increase above the pre-industrial background level.”

His calculations suggest sea level will rise between 0.5 and 1.4 metres – and the higher estimate is more likely because emissions have been rising faster than the IPCC’s worst case scenario.

“I sense than now a majority of sea level experts would agree with me that the IPCC projections are much too low,” he said.Most of my community is comfortable expecting at least a metre by the end of this century,” said Dr Robert Bindschadler, of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre in Maryland.

For many islands and low lying regions including much of the Netherlands, Florida and Bangladesh even small rises will spell catastrophe.

Large parts of London, New York, Sydney and Tokyo could be among cities submerged beneath the waves unless a massive engineering effort can protect them against the waves. (ANI)

Don’t fool people by claiming “premature”success in Swat operation : former PAF official

Islamabad, July 1 (ANI): While the Pakistan government has been claiming that the Swat military offensive has been successful and nearing its end, a former Pakistan Air Force (PAF) top official, Air Marshal (retired) Masood Akhter has raised questions over the claims by saying that people shouldn’t be fooled through such statements.

During a discussion on ‘Post-Swat Operation Outlook’ here, Akhter said people should not hope that the war against terrorism and the extremist threat would end within a few weeks.

“We shouldn’t befool people by saying war against militancy will end within a few weeks. The army is rendering sacrifices there and we must support it but it’ll take some time to completely defeat these elements,” The Daily Times quoted Akhter, as saying.

Akhter said the military offensive in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) would continue until militants are rooted out from region, and added that it was in Pakistan’s interest to quell extremism.

“It’s our war because it threatens our vital national interest and our moderate way of life, and the non-state actors are also threatening all of us,” he added.

Akhter highlighted that the government’s work should not be limited to flushing out of the militants, but it should also cover the post-war scenario.

“The government should socially and ideologically isolate adversaries, sever links between local terrorists and international jihadis, and wean people away from religious extremism,” he said. (ANI)

Chimps can learn to make their own tools watching video demos

London, July 1 (ANI): St Andrews University researchers in Scotland have shown that chimpanzees can be learn how to make their own tools by watching demonstrations on video.

For this work, the researchers trained a chimpanzee to make a long pole for prizing out-of-reach fruit from a tree, and then filmed the animal constructing the handy tool from a variety of different parts.

They say that watching a video of the feat, other chimps were also able to make their own similar tools.

Elizabeth Price, who led the study at the university’s School of Psychology, said that she wanted to discover whether chimps could learn to make a tool from separate parts after watching other animals use materials to improve their lives.

She pointed out that some birds are able to use twigs to pull grubs out of hiding places, and monkeys have been known to strip leaves from branches to fish for termites.

According to her, the findings of her study are “the first evidence that chimpanzees can socially learn how to construct tools,” and show that the animals are more intelligent than previously thought.

“It is very exciting as we didn’t know chimps could do this,” the Scotsman quoted her as saying.

“You could say the videos were like Blue Peter and ‘Here’s one I made earlier’.

“The chimps really needed to see the full instructional video to learn how to make the long tool and gain the reward.

“Most of those who didn’t watch the video, couldn’t make the tool,” she added.

Along with Professor Andrew Whiten of St Andrews University, Elizabeth led an international team of primate experts to uncover the remarkable learning feats of the chimpanzees.

The researchers presented chimpanzees in a primate centre at the University of Texas with a grape that was just out of reach.

They showed some chimps a video of another chimpanzee expertly slotting one stick into another to create a rake, and then using the tool to get the fruit.

Others were shown a shorter video showing a chimpanzee using a ready-made tool.

The researchers found chimpanzees that watched the full video demonstration were able to copy what they saw, and make the tools themselves.

In a follow-up test, since the grapes were put within reach, the use of a longer tool was unnecessary.

The researchers observed that the chimps that had learnt the skill by watching the full video persisted in making the rake, which in the new scenario was more awkward to use.

However, a few individual chimps that had watched the shorter video still managed to make a tool, did not do so when the grape was close enough to reach without help.

Elizabeth said: “These results are important not only because they provide the first evidence that chimpanzees can socially learn how to construct tools, but also because they suggest that social learning can have a potent effect on how an individual approaches related problems later.”

Based on the observations made during the study, she came to the conclusion that learning from others can lead to a less flexible approach to novel situations.

She and her colleagues are now planning to discover the extent to which our own species is vulnerable to a similar effect, by looking at children’s abilities.

Elizabeth added: “Social learning plays a major role in the spread of complex technologies in humans.”
