Spanish flair, Dutch connection liven local fans

(Reuters) – At a morning kick around on a dirt soccer pitch in South Africa’s Soweto township, there is only one team the boys all want to emulate — Spain.

“They play such easy, one-touch football. Tap and push, tap and push, then shoot and goal!” said Dumisani Motye, 13, lining up the ball repeatedly to try and curl shots like David Villa.

The Spanish striker and World Cup joint-top scorer is a hero for Motye and his friends from the local ‘Newcastle F.C.’ team. They are all backing Spain against Netherlands in Sunday’s final just down the road at Johannesburg’s Soccer City stadium.

“Spain have great strikers, great playmakers, we love them,” Motye said, to nods of approval from a crowd of kids practicing shots and moves by themselves in the sunshine.

After hosts South Africa were knocked out in the first phase, most locals transferred their allegiance to the only African team that reached the second round — Ghana.

When the Ghanaians lost to Uruguay in an agonizing quarter-final shootout, African loyalty ended and local fans have since been picking teams based on who shows the most flair or has the big names they like following on TV.

Spain fit that bill on both fronts, and in Soweto it was hard to find anyone backing the Dutch for Sunday.

“We are so much disappointed with our own teams,” said perfume-seller Jack Lutaaya Kato, 22. “In Africa, we admire teams who play beautiful football and Spain make us happy.”

Jobless Siyabonga Zulu, 35, said Spain played the South African style, but better: “They have a very nice system. I do not like the long passes the Netherlands play.”

HISTORICAL TIES

The Dutch, however, have had plenty of local support too throughout the tournament. Their loud and friendly orange-clad fans have made a positive impression on locals, and they have historical connections with South Africa.

In Cape Town, where Dutch colonizers first arrived in the mid-17th century, orange flags, scarves and other fan gear have dominated the displays on stalls and in shops.

“We have lots of cultural ties with Netherlands here, through history and the Afrikaans language which is just like Dutch,” said 46-year-old Benny Roberts.

“The Dutch also play good soccer. I love to watch them.”

It was, of course, the Dutch and British colonizers who paved the way for white rule and apartheid in South Africa, but there seems little resentment towards Netherlands for that.

“My friends say in fact that it was Netherlands people who made this country advanced, who helped develop South Africa,” said 18-year-old Johannesburg student Mzwakhe Tyali.

“Apartheid is in the past now. Let bygones be bygones. Anyway, what does it have to do with football?”

Magistrate allows Orissa labourers to work in cooler climes

Bargarh (Orissa), May 11 (ANI): With the mercury rising above 45-degree mark, the labourers in Orissa”s Bargarh District have been allowed to work in cooler temperatures.

“We have made arrangements for drinking water in the buses, if they ply after 10 or 11 a.m. The labourers have also been instructed to work till 11:30 am and after 3:30 pm. We are also putting this in the cinema halls through advertisements,” said Bandhu Bilhor, Additional District Magistrate.

Despite rainfall in other parts of the state, high temperature has affected normal life in Bargarh and the adjoining districts.

The district administration has made arrangement for providing drinking water to the commuters.

People venturing outdoors cover their faces with scarves, use sunscreen lotions and carry umbrellas.

“This year Bargarh recorded the maximum temperature, Earlier the temperature used to be comparatively low. From 9 am to 7 in the evening, the temperature remains high due to which we are unable to go to the market,” said Kanak Choudhary, a local.

At least 30 people have reportedly succumbed to heat across the country this year. (ANI)

Man U players warned not to join anti-Glazer protest

London, May 8 (ANI): Keeping in mind plans of rebel Manchester United supporters to flood the Old Trafford stadium with the champions’ old colours to protest against the Glazer family’s ownership, players have been ordered not to pick up any such scarves hurled on the pitch after Sunday’s Premier League game.

Pressure group Manchester United Supporters’ Trust (MUST) announced on Friday that they would be handing out free “Glazers Out” kits containing a flag, whistle and card emblazoned with the word “GO”.

They blame the American family for saddling the club with huge debts and want fans to hold up the cards when TV cameras focus on them or if United score against Stoke City.

United players have been warned that they must not give the “Glazers Out” campaign publicity by donning anything green and gold, like ex-star David Beckham did when he returned with AC Milan earlier this year.

“The word has come down from on high that the lads should only pick up red and white scarves, hats and flags. The Beckham incident was quite embarrassing for the club and the last thing they want is for Wayne Rooney or Ryan Giggs to be seen in green and gold,” The Sun quoted a United source, as saying.

In an email to supporters, MUST said: “Win, lose or draw, let’s call time on the Glazers. The manager, the players, the supporters – we’re all part of one big Manchester United family. The Glazers are not part of our family. We need to make that clear!”

Club chief executive David Gill said last week he would rather see the stadium full of red and white scarves instead of green and gold. (ANI)

Research and Markets: China Sourcing Report: Fashion Accessories 2010 – In 2009, Exports in Some Product Lines Rose as Businesses Boosted Sales to Alternative Markets

Other categories, however, still contracted due to weak demand. Apart from a
market rebound, caution that the recent winter snowstorms in the Northern
Hemisphere may be repeated is expected to stimulate orders for hats, caps,
gloves and scarves.

Even as export growth is forecast, however, profitability is being jeopardized
by rising material and labor outlay. Suppliers are absorbing most of the
additional expenses as price sensitivity is still a general sentiment among
buyers.

This report covers belts & buckles, sunglasses, optical frames, reading glasses,
gloves, hats, caps, hair accessories, hosiery, and neckwear.

China’s fashion accessories industry remains positive that 2010 will see an
overall recovery from the worldwide economic slump. In fact, most suppliers
anticipate overseas sales to climb at least 10 percent during the next 12
months.

In 2009, exports in some product lines rose as businesses boosted sales to
alternative markets. For the hosiery segment, morever, US quota elimination
served as a boon to companies. Other categories, however, still contracted due
to weak demand. Apart from a market rebound, caution that the recent winter
snowstorms in the Northern Hemisphere may be repeated is expected to stimulate
orders for hats, caps, gloves and scarves. Even as export growth is forecast,
however, profitability is being jeopardized by rising material and labor outlay.

Suppliers are absorbing most of the additional expenses as price sensitivity is
still a general sentiment among buyers. Therefore, cost controls are presently
being emphasized.

The following are some of the key trends and developments we see in Chinas
fashion accessories industry:

* Makers are suggesting less expensive materials and fabrication techniques to
achieve buyers desired quotes and product appearance. An example is substituting
brass with zinc alloy.
* Manufacturing inputs for large orders are being procured in just one batch to
avoid future rate increases.
* Strategic alliances are being formed among businesses so that component
requirements can be pooled and bigger discounts requested. The partnerships also
foster efficiency and output consistency.
* More exporters are transferring production facilities to inland provinces to
take advantage of lower rent, utility and labor rates. China suppliers of
fashion accessories offer belts and buckles, sunglasses, optical frames, reading
glasses, gloves, hats, caps, hair accessories, hosiery, and neckwear. These are
also the scope of this report.

Each of the categories has its own section with details on the features and
price ranges of low-end, midrange and high-end models for each classification.

The manufacturing and QC processes are discussed for some of the key products.
It also elaborates on the industry composition, highlighting key characteristics
of the different types of companies.

This section provides a general review of the major export and manufacturing
hubs for each line as well.

The Industry Overview illustrates how suppliers overseas sales in the past year
are influencing growth projections. Further, it explains the measures businesses
are taking to reduce expenses.

The fashion accessories export manufacturing industry in China is comprised of
small and midsize operations, and about 50 percent have direct export
capability.

At least 80 percent of all suppliers are private locally owned companies, less
than one-fifth have foreign participation and the rest are publicly listed or
SOEs.

The provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Guangdong are the main manufacturing
centers for fashion accessories. Zhejiang contributes roughly 37 percent to
national exports in the line, while Jiangsu accounts for 13 percent. Guangdong
represents 11 percent of overseas sales.

Reflecting this structure, 84 percent of suppliers profiled for this report are

Methodology:

To produce this report, Global Sources surveyed a wide range of suppliers.
Rather than focus simply on high-profile makers, we compiled a representative
sample of large, midsize and emerging manufacturers. All profiled companies are
export-oriented professional suppliers that may or may not be clients of Global
Sources.

The selection of suppliers is designed to reflect the composition of the
industry in China in terms of geographic spread, business type and company
ownership.

For in-depth company profiles, our research teams interviewed senior executives
and export managers who discussed their recent performance and provided price,
R&D, production and export forecasts for the next 12 months.

The interviews were done in person, by phone or e-mail.

In each case, companies were required to answer specific questions designed to
verify their manufacturing and export credentials, including their production
and export statistics, and a breakdown of exports by product type and market.
Our production checklist details the product-specific manufacturing capability
of each supplier.

All profiled suppliers participated in a survey designed to provide insight into
product and price trends, and challenges facing the industry in the next 12
months. All survey questions are single choice. Results were calculated based on
the actual number of valid responses to each question.

Real Simple Offers Essential Organizing Tips to Ready Your Home for Spring

REAL SIMPLE SOLUTIONS PRODUCTS DESIGNED TO SOLVE REAL-LIFE PROBLEMS THAT WOMEN
FACE EVERY DAY
NEW YORK, March 1 /PRNewswire/ — Just in time for your yearly spring
cleaning, Real Simple designed Real SimpleSolutions, products that allow
anybody to organize their closet in just a few simple steps. Did you ever
consider painting your closet interior a bright color or lining the shelves
with pretty wrapping paper? If you make your closet prettier and brighter by
adding stick-on lights, you’ll be more likely to keep it clean and
clutter-free. Real Simple offers five easy tips to put you on the path to a
beautiful and functional closet.

(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20100301/NYFNSJ02)

Edit your wardrobe. Take a look at your clothes and sort them into three
categories: what you wear most; least; or never. Donate the clothing you
haven’t worn in one year or more, as well as anything that no longer fits. If
an item is damaged beyond repair, it’s time to toss it out. When you wear
something, return it to the closet with the hanger facing out; at the end of
the year, you’ll know which items you’ve never worn (now donate them!)

Choose the right hanger. Your closet will look neater if you use just one
type of hanger. In fact, you can actually double your closet space with
slimline hangers that are flocked to keep clothing from slipping. Indents
hold straps in place and accessory bars securely hold belts, scarves, or ties.
Plus, a built-in hook allows the hangers to cascade, saving you even more
space. Choose from five colors – black, blue, stone, brown, and sage.

Arrange folded items. When folding clothing you’ll store on shelves, place
heavier items at the bottom of the pile. Arrange garments by function (workout
tops together, business tops together, etc.) and color (white to nude to
bright colors to black). If your closet doesn’t have shelves, consider using
part of your clothing rod for a Sweater Organizer and use Real Simple
SolutionsStorage Bins that fit inside the shelves. If you have a taller
closet, hang it lengthwise; if it’s wider, use the side hinge to flip up the
bottom shelves so they lay side-by-side. The four stretchy side pockets can
store belts, scarves, purses, or other small accessories. Creative uses can
include: put in the mudroom and assign one section to each family member;
organize your child’s outfits for each day of the week; or hang it in the
pantry and stock with entertaining supplies such as napkins, place mats, and
plastic dinnerware.

Put your purses away. A Hanging Purse Organizer is multi-functional – not
only does it allow you to store your bags of multiple sizes in a safe,
space-saving manner – you can also fill the shelves with rolled beach or bath
towels or stock the organizer with linens and hang it in a guest room closet.
If you have children, you can organize their toys and equipment – since the
organizer uses elastic, it’s safe for little fingers.

Pick a system for storing shoes. Stow shoes you don’t wear frequently in
labeled plastic boxes on a high shelf, in another closet, or under your bed.
For your everyday shoes, use a sturdy shoe and boot organizer for easy access.
The Real Simple SolutionsShoe and Boot Organizer can hold 18 pairs of shoes
in the pockets, plus two pairs of boots. There are also eight stretchy side
pockets to store accessories like scarves, belts, bags, or flip-flops.

Real Simple Solutions products are available exclusively at Bed Bath & Beyond

Tips and Tools to Make Your Spring Cleaning and Decorating a Breeze

UNION, N.J., March 1 /PRNewswire/ — Spring is just around the corner and
experts at Bed Bath & Beyond advise tackling “inside jobs” one at a time to be
ahead of the game when the temps rise.

To view the multimedia assets associated with this release, please click

http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/tips-and-tools-to-make-your-spring-cleaning-and-decorating-a-breeze-85429592.html

“Don’t wait until spring to start your spring cleaning,” commented Bari Fagin
of Bed Bath & Beyond. “Start by listing each room in your home and then each
task that needs to be completed in that room. Depending on the amount of time
you have, select a job you know you’ll be able to finish. This way, you’ll
feel rewarded as you complete each task.”

Fagin suggests the following tools and tips to help get you started:

Cut Kitchen Clutter. Take an hour or two to restore order in your kitchen.
Use an expandable wire mesh organizer to organize your cutlery and serving
pieces and expandable drawer dividers to section off your junk drawer. An
expandable two-tier shelf helps create additional storage space under your
sink utilizing the otherwise dead space around your drain pipe.

Your Biggest Hang Up. Your closets will look neater if you use just one type
of hanger. To maximize closet space, choose slimline hangers that are
flocked to hold clothing in place. When you swap your winter clothes out for
your spring line-up, turn all of your hangers around so the hook faces out,
that way at the end of the year, you’ll know which items you haven’t worn and
can donate.

An Organizing Shoo In. Stow shoes you don’t wear frequently in labeled
plastic boxes on a high shelf or under your bed. For your everyday shoes, use
a sturdy shoe and boot organizer for easy access. The Real Simple
SolutionsShoe and Boot Organizer can hold 18 pairs of shoes in the pockets,
plus two pairs of boots. There are also eight stretchy side pockets to store
accessories like scarves, belts, bags, or flip-flops.

Full Steam Ahead. Add the power of steam to your arsenal of cleaning tools
for an effective, chemical free alternative that effectively cleans and
sanitizes. Depending on your needs, choose a Euro-Pro Shark steam pocket mop
or portable steam pocket multi-surface cleaning system. The mop is
appropriate for use on all sealed and pre-sealed hard floor surfaces. The
portable unit can be used for mirrors and glass cleaning, bathroom cleaning,
and even range and cooktop cleaning.

A Bedroom Makeover Starts with The Bed. Since the bed is quite often the
biggest decor statement in your bedroom, simply changing your bedding is the
easiest way to makeover your room. Choose a complete bedding ensemble that
comes with a comforter, fitted and top sheet, shams, pillowcases and bed skirt
for an easy all-in-one transformation. Achieve a modern and sophisticated
look with the “Payton” ensemble or choose the simple elegance of the “Bloom
Field” ensemble with its serene tones and gentle floral design.

Don’t procrastinate, even if you start one room or even one drawer at a time,
you’ll have more time to spend outside in the spring. Whether you choose to
shop in-store or online, Bed Bath & Beyond has a great line-up of tips and
tools to help with all of your cleaning and decorating needs.

Emma Watson used gap year to design teen summer wear for People Tree

London, Sep 18 (ANI): Harry Potter star Emma Watson has revealed that she spent her gap year designing a ‘complete teenage summer wardrobe’ for the fair trade fashion brand People Tree.

Watson, 19, who has just enrolled at Brown University in the US, acted as a creative advisor for the ethical fashion collection, which will reach shops in February.

“I wanted to help People Tree produce a younger range because I was excited by the idea of using fashion as a tool to help alleviate poverty and knew it was something I could help make a difference with,” Sky News quoted her as saying.

“I think young people like me are becoming increasingly aware of the humanitarian and environmental issues surrounding fast fashion and want to make good choices but there aren’t many options out there.

“It has been the most incredible gap year project,” she added.

Among items that the teen actress has had a hand in designing were knitwear, cotton t-shirts, jersey dresses, and poplin shorts.

Her range also includes some more bizarre items, including “bohemian hand embroidered bed throws, recycled sweetie wrapper jewellery, banana fibre slouchy beanies and head scarves.”

They will be sold by People Tree, a company which aims at supporting developing countries and promoting environmental projects. (ANI)

Elle Macpherson’s labradoodle lands five-figure fashion deal!

Melbourne, Aug 28 (ANI): Australian actress Elle Macpherson’s pet dog Bella has landed a five-figure deal with a high fashion dog brand.

The labradoodle will be the face of ‘dogside.com’ showing off its leads, coats, scarves and bowls, for “today’s stylish urban dog”.

The Beautiful Life star was apparently keen to let her dog earn fame when her dog was approached.

Now, Bella is being promoted as ‘The Dog’s Body’ after its owner who was called ‘The Body’ during her modelling days.

Elle will be receiving the remuneration during the dog’s life time, reports the Daily Telegraph.

However, there are some people who see the trend of promoting pets as a matter of concern.

Beverley Cuddy, editor of Dogs Today magazine told the Daily Mail: “When Paris Hilton took her chihuahua everywhere, there was a rush in sales of handbag dogs.

“Adopting a celebrity’s hairstyle as they chop and change is fine but acquiring a dog for fashion to mirror a celebrity idol is disastrous. Lots of people chuck these dogs out after a few months.” (ANI)

Keith Richards wears his wife’s blouses, pyjama pants!

Washington, Aug 20 (ANI): Rockstar Keith Richards likes wearing his wife’s pyjamas and blouses.

Patty Hansen, his wife, believes the Rolling Stones star looks amazing in anything, even her clothes.

Contactmusic quoted the couple’s daughter Alexandra, 23, as saying: “My mum says he’d even look cute in a tutu. He doesn’t wear one, but he can wear anything and make it look great. He wears my mum’s pyjama pants and blouses, and still makes them look amazing. It’s cool.”

Alexandra and her sister Theodora say they have always been proud of their parents’ sense of fashion and their style.

Theodora told Britain’s Grazia magazine: “We were watching our baby videos last night and my mum and dad were the most wicked dressers.

“Everyone else was wearing clean-cut pants and T-shirts, and they had scarves on their heads, earrings everywhere – dad too. Their style definitely affected us.” (ANI)

New flick may make ‘Harry Potter’ one of the most successful franchises

London, July 8 (ANI): The latest instalment in the Harry Potter film could help make the franchise as one of the most successful franchises of all time, owing to the huge merchandising that comes with it.

The first five Harry Potter movies have been a massive source of revenue and profit for Warner Bros.

The franchise has earned a whopping 4.5 billion dollars, an average of 897 million dollars, at the box office alone, making it the most successful film franchise of all time, behind James Bond

And it is believed that the release of the new film, ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’, could push the Bond franchise back into second place.

In addition, it has earned 2.7 billion dollars from DVD sales, which makes for 211 million units, reports the Telegraph.

Video games have sold 1 billion dollars, more than 40 million units, while Warner Bros also makes hundreds of millions of dollars from merchandise and other sales such as downloads on iTunes.

After the DVD released of the ‘Half-Blood Prince’ later this year, a Lego video game based on Harry, Ron and Hermione’s first four years at Hogwarts, is due in 2010.

A theme park ‘The Wizarding World of Harry Potter’ is due to open in Orlando, Florida in spring 2010.

There is also the inevitable toy and clothing ranges which produce products such as interactive wands, Harry Potter-style glasses, Gryffindor scarves and a raft of action figures.

Mattel are set to release a new version of their popular ‘Scene It?’ interactive boardgames.

Harry Potter lovers can also expect top trumps, sticker albums and costumes. (ANI)

Ronaldo’s greed for more than 200,000 pound-a-week wages shocks Madrid bosses

London, June 19 (ANI): Cristiano Ronaldo has stunned Real Madrid bosses by claiming their world record 200,000 pound-a-week wages offer is not enough.

The Portuguese winger is not only not ready to settle for his 9.5 million pound salary to play for the Spanish giants, but also wants a huge slice of the profits from all merchandising involving his name.

Ronaldo, 24, is demanding half the profits from the sale of shirts, scarves, books, posters and flags, and that could rake him in an extra 20 million pound over six years, the Daily Star reports.

His greed has shocked Real Madrid chiefs, who were relying on the vast income from Ronaldo merchandise to help fund his world record 80 million pound transfer from Manchester United.

Though the row will not derail the deal, it could delay it for a month, plunging Premier League champs United into chaos. Sir Alex Ferguson is relying on the Ronaldo cash to rebuild his team, but cannot splash out until it is a done deal.

A United insider said last night: “While the transfer fee itself is settled, the personal terms are still under discussion. Merchandising rights are complicated and this could drag on. Cristiano is a shrewd businessman as well as the world’s greatest footballer.”

“He owns his own CR7 brand of clothes stores and is all too aware of the value of anything with his name attached. He’s not going to give that up.”

If Real meet Ronaldo’s demands it would mean the La Liga side smashing its image rights pay structure and upsetting other stars. (ANI)

The “fashionable way” to stave off skin cancer

Washington, May 5 (ANI): Just applying sunscreen doesn’t guarantee full protection in the summer, and thus researchers have now offered insight into how some of today’s hottest fashion trends can help play it safe in the sun without leaving you feeling like a well-greased baking pan.

Dr. Susan Y. Chon, assistant professor in The University of Texas M. D. Anderson’s Department of Dermatology, has explained how the hottest trends from the spring/summer 2009 runway shows also can provide skin cancer prevention and maximize clothing’s sun protection power.

Sunglasses:

The most fabulous, current sunglass styles are those with extra-large frames that help protect the delicate skin around the eyes from skin cancer and aging. Sunglasses also should have broad ultraviolet (UV) protection that absorbs at least 99 percent of UV rays for maximum cancer prevention benefits.

Leggings:

Leggings have now become a runway staple and can go under dresses and tunics even in hot weather because they aren’t as heavy as pants. They are a great way to defend legs from UVA and UVB rays while running errands or at an outdoor barbeque.

Long Dresses:

Another leg-saving fashion trend that is extremely popular on the runways for spring/summer 2009 is the move from “mini” to “maxi”-long dresses are everywhere, and are being worn for day and night.

Hats:

Modern, wide-brimmed sun hats shield the face, neck, ears and chest from the sun. The trend this season on the runway-the bigger the brim, the better! Sun hats also should be tightly woven.

Tunic Tops:

Pretty, “boho” style beach cover-ups with long sleeves are a great way to save a person’s skin from being over exposed in a teeny-bikini. Tunic tops are not only perfect on the beach but also can transition from day to night when worn with the right accessories, like chunky bracelets, necklaces and belts.

Scarves:

Summery shawls and scarves in lightweight fabrics are back again this season.

“Women are usually pretty good about applying sunscreen to their face, but generally forget their necks and the ‘v’ of their chests. A light scarf is a great way to cover neglected skin that gets a lot of sun exposure during summer months,” said Chon.

One Piece Bathing Suits:

The new trend of one-piece bathing suits gives skin on the stomach an extra layer of protection. One-piece suits also provide more coverage of the lower back, an area often missed while applying sunscreen.

Maximize clothing’s sun protection power

“There are certain colours and fabrics that will offer more protection than others,” said Chon.

To maximize clothing’s skin cancer prevention powers, wear tightly woven, dark-coloured fabrics.

“You don’t need to wear special UPF clothing to get extra protection, just wear a sunscreen with SPF15 or higher under layers. It is absolutely possible to be fashion conscious and protect yourself from the sun. The trends on the runway this year offer more coverage. We love that! Said Chon. (ANI)

Suspect in murder of handball star nabbed in Austria

Budapest – Austrian police arrested one of two men suspected of killing Romanian handball international Marian Cozma, Hungarian officials said Sunday night.

Hungarian police spokeswoman Piroska Varadi said international arrest warrants had been issued for two suspects, Sandor Raffael and Ivan Sztojka, but did not confirm which of the two had been caught at the Austrian border.

Cozma was killed and two of his teammates injured in a knife attack outside a Hungarian nightclub early Sunday.

The slaying has stunned international handball fans and sent shockwaves throughout Hungary, where recent months have seen a growing sense of public unease over a rise in violent crime.

Cozma, the 2.10-metre-tall star of Hungarian team MKB-Veszprem, was stabbed in the heart following an altercation at a local night club in Veszprem, 80 kilometres from Budapest.

The 26-year-old, who was also a member of Romania’s national team, was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

A group of MKB-Veszprem players and friends had been celebrating the birth of a team member’s child at a night club when an argument with another large group spilled out onto the street.

“The players were behaving normally when a group of about 30 attacked Cozma as he danced with his girlfriend,” said Akos Hunyadfalvy, team president.

“The crime on Sunday morning was not only an attack against the victims and sports fans in Veszprem, but also against public order and safety in Hungary,” said Hungarian Justice Minister Tibor Draskovics.

MKB-Veszprem’s Croatian goalkeeper Ivan Pesic, 23, was also stabbed in the fracas and had to undergo emergency surgery to remove a damaged kidney.

His Serbian teammate Zarko Sesum was kicked unconscious after rushing to Cozma’s aid and taken to hospital with a fractured cheekbone.

“Zarko Sesum is out of danger and his condition is stable,” Veszprem hospital director Jeno Racz said, adding that he would need reconstructive surgery.

A crowd of about 1,000, many wearing MKB-Veszprem scarves, gathered in front of the town’s sports arena for a vigil that was mirrored in several other towns and cities across Hungary.

Cozma’s father travelled to Veszprem when he learned of the death of his son. “He never hurt anyone, and yet this how he had to die,” the distraught father said on Hungarian television.

“A large-scale investigation is under way, and a large force has been mobilized to maintain public order and safety,” Veszprem police chief Zoltan Bolcsik told reporters. (dpa)

Hillary Duff teams up with DKNY to start own fashion line

Washington, Feb 6 (ANI): Pop star Hillary Duff has teamed up with celebrated fashion label DKNY to create her own fashion line.

Duff seems to be following in the footsteps of Hollywood actress Rachel Bilson, who last year collaborated with same label in a bid to launch her own fashion line.

Duff’s fashion line will focus on clothing for young women, including denims, tunics, and scarves.

“I took time finding the right fashion house to collaborate with in a design partnership. I have always adored and worn DKNY jeans, so it made perfect sense to reach out to them. We hit it off immediately, sharing a design vision offering something special for young women like me,” Contactmusic quoted Duff, as saying. (ANI)

About two million converge to watch Obama’s swearing-in ceremony

Washington, Jan.20 (ANI): About two million people have converged into the area between the Capitol, the White House and the Lincoln Memorial to witness the first African American taking oath of office and secrecy in a short while from now as 44th President, replacing George W.Bush .

Many of these people will remain to be over a mile away from the actual venue of swearing-in ceremony. But they will watch the historical moment taking place on giant TV screens erected along the National Mall.

Thousands arrived before daylight Tuesday in standing-room-only trains. They carried blankets and wore Obama scarves to ward off the wind chills of minus 15 degrees Fahrenheit.

Earlier, suburban Washington train stations were jammed. A four-story parking deck at the Springfield, Virginia, station was filled at 5 a.m. Trains rolling into the stop about 15 miles south of the Capitol had no room for the hundreds on the platform. (ANI)

Obama-inspired fashion items selling briskly

New York, Jan.16 (ANI): With just four days left for Barack Obama’s inauguration as the United States’ 44th President, the American fashion industry has started creating inauguration-themed clothing.

They are producing T-shirts, tote bags and scarves range from runway darlings Derek Lam and Narcisco Rodriguez to everyday folks with a good sense of humour.

Lam says the design of his shirt for the Presidential Inaugural Committee with graphic rows of zeros and “Obama” and “01-20-09″ at the bottom was inspired by tickertape. “It’s dialling back to zero because we’re starting fresh.”

The Globe and Mail quoted Bill Jemas as saying that he was using the inauguration as a platform for his new peace-focused brand Intelligent Design.

The underlying message of many of the shirts is reconciliation.

At Zazzle.com, an on-demand retail website, apparel has been the best selling Obama category, but the company also reports brisk sales of hats, shoes, skateboards and other paraphernalia.

There are a total of 113,000 Obama-inspired products on the site, according to DeMarco, with more than 30,000 dedicated to “Yes We Can” or “Yes We Did.”

Jana Eggers, CEO of Spreadshirt, a personalized apparel company, meanwhile, has seen an increasing number of items with Obama’s face on it.

Inaugural T-shirts are on Spreadshirt’s home page now, but election items weren’t.

Designer Rachel Roy didn’t think twice about participating.

“It’s probably one of the biggest honours I’ve been asked to do since I’ve been designing and that’s almost 16 years,” she said. (ANI)

Now, a ‘magic scarf’ that can be turned into a dress

London, Jan 15 (ANI): Amid the global financial crisis, a company has come up with a ‘magical’ scarf that can transform from a piece of neck wear into eight other items, including a dress, a skirt, a or boob-tube style top.

The stretchy garment, which costs just 6.50 pounds, can be converted into a poncho, a pashmina, a hood, a belt or even a hand muff to keep hands warm in chilly winters.

“It really is the ultimate accessory, in fact it is more than that, it is almost an entire wardrobe in one,” the Telegraph quoted Loie Levine, from The Magic Scarf Company, as saying.

The company has so far sold almost 170,000 pounds of the scarves to British customers over the Internet.

“It is very popular all over the world as it is a reasonable price and you can do so much with it. Our major market is in the US but we have sold approximately 170,000 pounds worth to the UK,” Levine said.

“There are no major chains or stores who carry the scarf, just smaller stores and boutiques but much of the sales have come from our own website,” she added.

The scarf can even be washed in a washing machine at low temperatures. (ANI)

Kashmiri Pashmina shawl industry facing challenge to survive

Srinagar, Jan.11 (ANI): Buying the famous Pashmina shawl of Kashmir has been one of the major charms for anyone visiting the scenic valley or the State. But with a growing availability of cheap imitations of Pashmina shawls in the local markets, original Pashmina shawls’ future is at stake.

For centuries the Pashmina shawls have been woven on handlooms from wool handspun from the shaggy coat of a goat, which lives in the heights of the Himalayas in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir state.

Thousands of Kashmiris are associated with the ancient trade. Women mostly spin and men weave the delicate yarn into warm, soft scarves and shawls, which are often embroidered.

Hundreds of Pashmina weavers, however, have felt compelled to take to other professions. For, cheap and machine-made shawls available around are affecting the original pieces’ demand and particularly the duplicate items available here from Amritsar.

Shabir Ahmed, a wholesaler from Srinagar said that the fakes especially from Amritsar have put Pashmina trade into the doldrums.

“Hundreds of thousands of people are associated with this trade. Ladies spin the wool, the men weave the shawls and then there are other’s who do embroidery on these shawls and the local hawkers sell these shawls. But these days we are facing problems due to the fakes from Amritsar. Due to this everything is in doldrums,” said Shabir Ahmed, a wholesaler dealing in Pashmina shawls in Srinagar.

Besides, the Pashmina shawl industry has not also suffered government neglect at times of local weavers’ concerns.

Shahtoosh, wool derived from the hair of an endangered Tibetan antelope, shawls made from Pashmina wool are considered the world’s finest and are exported worldwide.

According to officials, nearly 50,000 Pashmina shawls are still woven in Kashmir a year.

Local legend has it that Kashmiri shawls came to Europe after French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte presented one to his wife Josephine.

Kashmiri Pashminas, with intricate embroidery, can now fetch as much as rupees 500,000 (10,000 US Dollars) a piece at trendy boutiques and department stores in London or New York.

Plain hand-woven pieces are less expensive at a few hundred dollars, but even these are out of the reach of most people compared to good quality, machine-made alternatives which are priced at up to 2,500 rupees (52 US Dollars) each.

Another problem facing the Pashmina industry is lack of proper branding.

Local rue that the name “Pashmina” is used indiscriminately by weavers, and can be found on cheap, synthetic-fiber shawls as well as wraps made with a mix of wool and silk fibers.

Though witnessing the fake infiltration into Pashmina shawl industry, the government has decided to make GI mark compulsory for the Pashmina shawls. But the volume of work to be done is so much that the government has not been able to initiate this branding so far.

“This means from wherever the business is being generated, even from the imitations, it has to come back to Kashmir, to the craftsmen and to the traders. Second thing is that traditionally the outside people who were doing business now they will have to pay for this. They can’t do business just like this. Like by giving any fake name to their product. Now they will have to say ‘Kashmir Pashmina’ and they will have to say registered GI, only then can they sell and for doing that they will have to pay and I feel that after these measures business will definitely increase,” said Shariq Farooqi, Director, Craft Development Institute.

The name “Pashmina” is derived from the Persian for wool. By Parvez Butt (ANI)

77-year-old ‘shopaholic’ buried alive under 16yr pile of shopping

London, Jan 9 (ANI): A 77-year-old woman lost her life after 16-year pile of unopened purchases collapsed on her.

Joan Cunnane, was buried alive under 3ft of ornaments, clothes in suitcases and electrical goods, still unpacked.

It took two days for the twelve policemen with sniffer dogs to unload her stock and find her body.

“It gave her pleasure to buy things,” The Sun quoted her best friend Roy Moran as saying.

“I once asked how many scarves she had. She said 300. I asked why so many. She said they were all different colours,” he added.

Roy reported Joan missing on Tuesday in Stockport, Greater Manchester, after she missed a hospital appointment. (ANI)
