BP warns of L.A. refinery flaring -filing

May 30 (Reuters) – BP Plc (BP.L) (BP.N) warned of unplanned and planned flaring at its 265,000 barrel per day (bpd) Los Angeles-area refinery in Carson, California, as it works to restart a gasoline unit after it was shut for unscheduled repairs last week, according to notices filed with California pollution regulators on Saturday.

Stocks | Global Markets | Energy

One notice warned of unplanned flaring due to a breakdown on Saturday and Sunday. Another notice warned of planned flaring due to a breakdown from Sunday through Thursday. A third notice warned of planned flaring at the refinery through June 10.

BP is attempting to repair the gasoline-producing fluidic catalytic cracking unit at the Carson refinery and return the FCCU and ancillary units to planned operations, sources familiar with refinery operations have said.

The company has declined to discuss operations at the refinery. (Reporting by Erwin Seba; editing by Gunna Dickson)

New Zealand-Sri Lanka Florida match abandoned, 1st Ld-Writethru, CRI

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) One of three Twenty20 cricket internationals between New Zealand and Sri Lanka to be played in Florida next week has been canceled because of concerns over inadequate floodlighting. New Zealand Cricket said Sunday the scheduled first match of a three-match series at Central Broward Regional Park in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday, and a match between the United States and Jamaica, have been scrapped because lighting at the stadium was not of sufficient quality for international cricket.

New Zealand and Sri Lanka will meet in day matches at the Broward County stadium on Saturday and Sunday, May 22 and 23, while the United States and Jamaica will likely play a 50-overs international, NZC chief executive Justin Vaughan said. “Ideally the inaugural game would have been a night game on Thursday,” Vaughan said.

“The lights at the stadium are fine for most levels of cricket, but they need to be of a higher standard for the playing and broadcast of international cricket. “Added to this, there is a high probability of rain and thunderstorms in the region on Thursday which added weight to our decision.

Because of these factors, we have decided, along with our partner USA Cricket, to focus all of the attention on the weekend.” The Jamaica-U.S. match is expected to be played Friday.

The New Zealand players were “tremendously excited” to be involved in helping promote international cricket in the United States, he said.

Tourists cancel bookings in Darjeeling following Gorkha shutdown

Siliguri (West Bengal), May 13 (ANI): Tourists heading to Darjeeling for holidays are cancelling their plans following a shutdown call given by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) to demand a separate state of Gorkhaland.

The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha that has called for a shutdown on Saturday and Sunday are expected to come up with a more intensive movement, if their demands are not met.

Following the shutdown call, tourists are reluctant to stay in Darjeeling, fearing violence.

“I went to Darjeeling and had plans to stay there for around ten days. But I heard that Darjeeling hills would come under strike for a period of two days. Hearing the news, I decided to return. Like me, there are many other tourists who are going back,” said Safikul Islam, a tourist from Bangladesh.

Tour operators said the shutdown call would be a big loss for tourism in the area.

“It (shutdown) brings a very bad brand name to the region actually, and with the strikes that are due on 14th, 15th and 16th of May in the plains and in the hills. There have been several cancellations, which is very unfortunate because this is the most peak time for the tourism this summer,” said Raj Basu, tour operator.

“All the tourism infrastructure in the region was jam-packed. There were extra flights been given, there are extra trains, extra buses, which are running from the different places to Siliguri. This sudden shutdown has actually brought in a lot of cancellation and a big loss to the tourism industry,” he added.

GJM chief Bimal Gurung had earlier declared in a rally that if things did not go their way during forthcoming meetings over the creation of the separate state, they might come up with a more voluble movement.

The GJM activists kick started a relay hunger strike here on Monday to give a fillip to their movement over the demand for a separate state of Gorkhaland.

The hunger strike was kicked off eyeing upon putting the Centre on the back foot ahead of the sixth round of tripartite talks, involving the Central Government and the representatives of the GJM to be held in New Delhi on May 14.

Earlier on April 9, Bimal Gurung met Union Home Minister P Chidambaram in New Delhi, who assured him that he would talk to the Government of West Bengal and Trinamool Congress about their demands.

The GJM had agreed during the fifth round of tripartite talks in New Delhi to the constitution of Interim Council by next year prior to the creation of a separate state.

Gorkhas, who are ethnic Nepalese, have been demanding a separate state in Darjeeling hills, to help them protect their culture and heritage. (ANI)

British Airways strike leads to cancellation of thousands of tickets

London, Mar. 20 (ANI): Thousands of passengers had their flights cancelled on Saturday following the launch of a strike by British Airways cabin crew.

It is first such strike in 13 years.

After talks over cost cutting between the airline and union Unite, which represents cabin crew, collapsed on Friday, the troubled airline said it hoped to keep flights running for up to 49,000 passengers on both Saturday and Sunday.

Unite said that its 12,000 members were supporting the three day walkout.

At Heathrow, which is the worst affected airport, screens were set up to protect the identities of BA staff who defied the strike.

BA said it expected 60 percent of its long-haul services and 30 percent short-haul services from Heathrow would be running over the weekend while short-haul flights from Gatwick would be halved.

In a bid to keep the service run normally going, BA chartered planes from rival airlines, drafted in volunteer crew from among its other work force and rebooked some passengers on other services.

“I am deeply sorry. This is a terrible day for BA. Thousands of our staff will be serving you over the weekend. I am confident that we will be able to deliver a good service,” News.com.au quoted BA CEO Willie Walsh, as saying in his apology to passengers.

However, Unite claimed that two of the planes chartered by BA as part of the airline”s contingency plans were delayed by technical problems and that more than 100 complaints had been made by passengers about catering.

“We don’t want to strike but the company has been totally unreasonable and given us no choice,” one Unite member said.

Analysts estimate that BA has already lost more than 25 million pounds because of cancelled tickets and contingency costs due to the strike. (ANI)

Pak skipper Younis Khan fractures finger

Benoni (South Africa), Sep.19 (ANI): Pakistan cricket team’s Champions Trophy dreams suffered a major set back when captain Younis Khan fractured his finger during a warm-up match against Sri Lanka here.

Doctors have advised Khan complete rest for the next three days. It is unsure whether he will be playing in the next two practice games on Saturday and Sunday.

Notwithstanding Khan’s injury, Pakistan, however, trounced Sri Lanka by 108 runs in the first warm-up match ahead of eight nation tournament.

The Pakistan team is staying in Johannesburg’s Santon Sun Hotel while in South Africa.

Team manager Yawar Saeed has expressed satisfaction over the security arrangement.

“Over half a dozen security guards have been deputed to guard the floor where Pakistan team is staying. I think in recent times this is one of the best security cover the team is provided with,” The News quoted Saeed, as saying. (ANI)

8 out of 10 Americans oppose Lockerbie bomber’s release

Washington, Aug. 25 (ANI): A whopping 82 percent of Americans oppose Scotland’s justice minister’s decision to release the convicted Lockerbie bomber, a new poll has found.

Last week, Baset not only set Abdel Baset al-Megrahi free but also allowed him to return to Libya on so-called compassionate grounds.

Megrahi, who is terminally ill with prostate cancer, was the only person convicted in the 1988 airline bombing that killed 270 people.

According to a Rasmussen Reports’ survey, majorities across every demographic category strongly disagreed with the decision.

Just 10 percent agreed with the decision, Fox News reports.

Sixty-three percent of adults said they followed news reports about the Lockerbie bomber.

The survey comes after a host of top U.S. officials have condemned the decision.

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in an interview Sunday he was “appalled” by the move.

FBI Director Robert Mueller sent a letter to Scotland’s Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill saying the release “gives comfort to terrorists” around the world.

The survey, taken Saturday and Sunday, was based on interviews with 1,000 adults. The poll had a margin of error of 3 percentage points. (ANI)

Wednesday, not Monday, is the worst day of the week

London, Aug 23 (ANI): Monday was always assumed to be the day we are most miserable, but as it turns out, Wednesday is the worst day of the week.

That’s the claim of two American applied mathematicians, who analysed words used in 2.4 million internet blogs such as Twitter, giving a score out of nine depending on how positive they were.

Professors Christopher Danforth and Peter Dodds, of Vermont University, gave words like free, fun, rainbow and sex 8+ score, while words such as betray, cruel, hatred and suffocate all scored less than two.

Saturday and Sunday rated predictably well but, most shockingly, Monday came out as the second happiest day of the week, partly because people were still reminiscing about the weekend, reports The Telegraph.

However by Wednesday, these feelings had subsided.

Professor Danforth said: “People’s daily experience is being reflected somewhat in what they’re saying. And this is more of a story, we think, for Twitter messages, which we’ve just started to pay attention to, about a year ago.

“They think they are communicating with friends, but since blogs are public we’re just looking over their shoulders.

“The weekends tend to be fairly happy and Wednesday turned out to be the saddest day.”

The expert added: “What we’re attempting to do is measure collective happiness on a much larger scale, similar to measuring the temperature outside.

“The energy of a few molecules bouncing around doesn’t give a good indication of heat, you need billions or more.” (ANI)

Several Taliban insurgents killed as PAF pound Mehsud’s stronghold in South Waziristan

Islamabad, July 13 (ANI): The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) continued to pound suspected Taliban hideouts in South Waziristan killing scores of militants.

According to sources, fighter jets bombarded terror training centers and other suspected installations of the Taliban in Maulvi Khan Serai, Old Serwekai and Berwand areas considered to be Baitullah Mehsud’s stronghold.

Residents said at least eight extremists were killed in an attack on a training centre in Maulvi Khan Serai on Sunday.

It is believed that the sudden surge in air strikes is primarily aimed at dismantling the Taliban before the launch of a full scale military offensive in the region.

Meanwhile, security forces have reportedly started moving further inwards in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP).

Troops backed by tanks were seen heading towards some areas in Bannu district and the adjacent Frontier Region where an operation had been carried out recently, The Dawn reports.

In yet another significant move, pro-government militant commander Turkistan Bhittani pulled his army out of the Tank city and has reportedly moved towards Jandola.

“Tank was practically controlled by Bhittani till Saturday. His people conducted raids in the city and outskirts in search of Baitullah’s people.

Soon after the arrival of army in Tank on Saturday, Bhittani’s people disappeared,” residents said, adding: “Baitullah’s men have either left Tank or gone underground.”

A statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) claimed that security forces killed one insurgent and arrested 16 others in raids carried out on Saturday and Sunday. (ANI)

Pak elite commandos to take on Taliban in house-to-house combat

London, May 11 (ANI): To flush the Taliban from its urban strongholds in the Swat Valley, the Pakistani Army has intensified its operation in the region and is preparing for a house-to-house combat.

Officials revealed on Sunday that elite commando troops had been dropped into parts of Mingora, Swat’s capital, to undertake advance combat, even as the army lifted a curfew to allow thousands of civilians to flee.

The operation in Swat and adjoining areas was intensified and nearly 200 militants and two security personnel were killed in clashes on Saturday and Sunday, said Major General Athar Abbas, director of the Inter-Services Public Relations.

“We have prepared for house-to-house fighting, but if the militants leave Mingora, then we will avoid it,” The Telegraph quoted Major General Abbas, as saying.

He said that the security forces were heading from two directions towards Mingora and both forces would link up before assailing the city in force.

In Swat, suspected locations of militants were attacked in Kanju, Mingora, Venaibaba, Namal, Qambar, Peochar, Fizagath, Tiligram and Chamtalai areas and 50 to 60 militants were killed.

Security forces urged citizens to remain vigilant and said that the terrorists had planted explosive devices in various areas of Mingora and Swat to put the blame of civilian deaths on security forces.

Thousands more terrified civilians, many on foot or donkey-pulled carts, streamed out of the valley during the curfew.

Pakistan launched the full-scale offensive on Thursday to halt the spread of the Taliban, which had reached as deep as 60 miles from the capital, Islamabad.

Militants had pushed beyond strongholds in Swat after reaching a peace deal in which the government agreed to their main demand to impose Islamic law in the region.

The army said on Sunday that it had killed at least 180 suspected militants. It said at least 140 bodies of alleged militants were discovered in a camp in Shangla, a district next to Swat where fighting appears to have greatly intensified. (ANI)

Improving Schalke cruise to 4-0 win over Cottbus

Gelsenkirchen, Germany – Schalke 04 routed Energie Cottbus 4-0 in the German Bundesliga on Friday night to keep alive their ambitions of playing in Europe next season.

Christian Pander opened the scoring three minutes into the game with a deflected 18-metres shot high under the bar.

Halil Altintop got the second from the edge of the area in the 23rd and set up Jermaine Jones for the third on the hour before Kevin Kuranyi wrapped up matters with his 12th season goal in the 87th.

Schalke got their third straight victory since coach Fred Rutten was sacked and replaced by the caretaker trio of Mike Bueskens, Oliver Reck and Youri Mulder.

They rank sixth with 46 points, just two shy of number five which is brings with it a UEFA Cup berth and is currently occupied by VfB Stuttgart.

Harmless Cottbus, by contrast, languish in the drop zone in 17th place as their hopes of staying in the top flight suffered another blow.

The other eight games are Saturday and Sunday. Bundesliga leaders VfL Wolfsburg (54 points) host Bayer Leverkusen, second-placed Bayern Munich (51) are at struggling Arminia Bielefeld and third-ranked SV Hamburg (51) host Hanover 96. (dpa)

New Zealand Customs intercepts drugs from Hong Kong

Wellington – New Zealand Customs officers seized drugs worth millions of dollars on the illegal street market when they arrested three travellers from Hong Kong as they flew into Auckland over the weekend, a spokesman said Wednesday.
