Malaysia’s ‘whip-for-drinking-beer’ model a free woman now

Kuntan (Malaysia), Apr 23(ANI): Former Malaysian model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, whose caning sentence for drinking beer in public had been converted into a community service one, is now a free woman.

She completed her three-week community service at the Tengku Ampuan Fatimah Children’s Home at Alor Akar about 10 kilometres from here, and was released on Thursday, The Star reports.

Kartika, a mother of two, was sentenced by the Kuantan Syariah Court in July last year to six strokes of the rotan and a fine of RM5,000 for drinking beer in December 2007 at a hotel.

Her case had attracted both local and international attention, following which the Sultan of Panang, Sultan Ahmad Shah, used his discretion to spare the mother-of-two from the canning sentence.

Kartika had earlier said that she wanted to get a job after her community service and focus on her children – one of whom was afflicted with cerebral palsy while the other had a heart condition. (ANI)

Now, unwed Malaysian couple to be whipped for trying to have car sex

Shah Alam (Malaysia), Sep. 18 (ANI): Following the whipping episode of the Malaysian model who was sentenced for drinking beer, an unmarried couple is now being subjected to the controversial canning sentence under the country’s Sharia law for trying to have sex.

Mohammad Shahrin Abd Majid, 29, and his lover Nadiah Najat Hussin, 24, pleaded guilty to attempting to have sex in a car, were fined 5,000 ringgits or 12 months’ jail and ordered to be caned six times each, the New Strait Times Online reports.

Both Shahrin and Nadiah have paid the fine. On Wednesday, the Sharia High Court of Shah Alam granted a stay on the caning pending an appeal following an application by the couple’s counsel.

The Court has also advised both accused to marry as soon as possible.

The couple had claimed that they were to be engaged soon, and scheduled to be married in February next year.

“You are still young… after Hari Raya seek consent from both your parents to marry,” he said.

Shahrin and Nadiah would be sent to prison in order to receive the caning if their appeal gets dismissed.

Malaysian Home Minister clears sentence of whip-for-beer-drinking model

Kuala Lumpur, Sep. 6 (ANI): Malaysian Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein has “cleared” the Prisons Department to cane part-time model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, who is being sentenced for drinking beer.

Last week, department director-general Zulkifli Omar and a woman officer came to Home Minister’s office to demonstrate the caning sentence.

“She tapped the back of a chair with the cane. There was little force involved and it was not going to inflict pain, not even like the caning carried out in schools in those days.

“I am now satisfied that the caning can be carried out by the department if the court decides to proceed and enforce the sentence,” the Star Online quoted him, as saying.

Hishammuddin said that although he was now satisfied that the department was able to conduct the caning, he still felt it had no experience to do so.

“This is because the woman (Kartika) will be the first to be caned. Four men who have received caning sentences by the Syariah Court are appealing their sentences,” he said.

“That is not their purview. It is the judicial process which decides that. If the caning sentence is to be imposed, it is their duty to carry it out fairly,” he added.

Kartika, a 32-year-old mother-of-two, was fined 5,000 ringgits and ordered to be whipped six times for drinking beer in a hotel in Cherating last year.

Her sentence has been deferred until after Ramadan.

Several parties, such as the Bar Council, have called for the sentence to be annulled.

Kartika’s father, Shukarno Mutalib, when contacted, said the family was happy to hear that the department was able to handle the caning.

“Alhamdullillah. Kartika wants it over and done with,” he said. (ANI)

‘Whip-for-drinking-beer’ model’s father hopes she will be spared the cane

Kuala Lumpur, Aug 31 (ANI): The father of Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, the former model booked for drinking beer in Malaysia, hopes that his daughter will be spared the cane if her case comes up for review.

Shukarno Mutalib said: “I’m looking forward to hearing good news and I have sought the counsel of Perak Mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria, who assured me everything would be okay during this holy month.”

Shukarno said he and Kartika would accept any decision made by the authorities.

Kartika, 32, was fined RM5,000 and sentenced to six strokes of the rotan by the Syariah High Court in Kuantan on July 20 after pleading guilty to drinking beer at a hotel in Cherating in 2007.

It is understood that the religious authorities are considering reviewing her case, The NST Online reported.

Shukarno was touched by the support from those who sympathised with Kartika.

“Now that it’s Ramadan, it’s never lonely at home. People come with kind words for Kartika, as her child is also sick. There are those who bring food and come to break fast with us,” Shukarno said.

He also said that the media hype had brought members of many Muslim non-governmental organisations, such as Sisters In Islam, to his doorstep.

“This shows that not all Islam-based NGOs are lobbying for Kartika to be caned. Some want her to undergo religious classes and such as punishment.”

He asked reporters to stop harassing Kartika for comments on the phone or by staking out their family home as she was nursing her second child who was down with pneumonia.

Kartika was to have been detained at the prison last Monday so that the caning could be carried out. But minutes after she was picked up, she was released.

Pahang Religious Affairs Committee chairman Sahfri Abdul Razak said then that the sentence would be carried out after Ramadan. (ANI)

Former Malaysian PM says ‘whip-for-drinking-beer’ model’s sentence ‘too harsh’

Petaling Jaya (Malaysia), Aug. 26 (ANI): Former Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohammad has expressed concern over the whipping sentence given to part-time model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno for drinking beer, saying the punishment is “too harsh.”

Dr. Mohammad questioned the fairness of the harsh decision in his blog post, asking if Islam didn’t allow mercy for first time offenders, The Star reports.

“Is not Islam merciful to first-time offenders?” Dr Mahathir asked, adding that fairness and consideration were the main tenets in Islam.

“We will be celebrating our independence this year by flogging a Muslim woman for drinking beer under Syariah law,” he added.

“Although the story has gone across the globe, Muslims should not worry about other people’s perceptions when dealing with matters of our religion despite the negative or positive image it might bring,” he noted. (ANI)

Malaysian model mum spared cane for beer drinking

Kuala Lumpur, Aug.24 (ANI): A woman who was to be caned here today for drinking beer in a bar, has been spared by religious authorities.

“The warrant cannot be executed,” Sharafuddin Zainal Ariffin, the head of enforcement for the state of Pahang’s Islamic Affairs Department.

Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, 32, would have been the first woman to be caned in Malaysia.

According to the Courier Mail, the Muslim model said she would now plan a pilgrimage to Mecca, and seeking solace in prayer.

She was earlier sentenced to receive six strokes of the cane after pleading guilty to drinking alcohol at a hotel nightclub last year.

Kartika cried when the verdict was handed down last month but in an interview at her home in a small Malay village, she was composed about her fate.

“Sometimes I feel sad and stressed as I have tarnished my family’s name. But now after spending time reading the Koran, I feel calm and am not afraid of being caned,” she said.

The part-time model and mother of two, who lives in neighbouring Singapore, had called for her punishment to be carried out in public. (ANI)

Malay Islamic court orders caning of model for drinking beer

Kuala Lumpur, Aug.19 (ANI): An Islamic court has ordered the caning of a Muslim part-time model after she admitted to drinking beer in ahotel night club.

Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno was also fined 5,000 ringgit (856 dollars) for her offence, Sky News reports.

Shukarno, 32, was caught consuming alcohol when police raided a hotel nightclub in Pahang state last year.

She pleaded guilty and has been sentenced to six lashes with a rattan cane.

The Islamic court said the punishment must take place within seven days from next Monday.

Kartika will be held in a women’s prison until then and afterwards released “as soon possible”, prosecutor Saiful Idham Sahimi said.

Caning is administered on the buttocks and usually breaks the skin leaving permanent scars.

But a lighter cane than the one used on men will be used on Kartika with the purpose to “educate” rather than punish, Saiful said.

“This is the first case in Malaysia. It is a good punishment because under Islamic law a person who drinks commits a serious offense,” he said.

Kartika has said she wants to be caned quickly so she can get on with her life with her husband and children. (ANI)
