Court acquits Chandraswami in FERA case

New Delhi, June 5 — A Delhi court, on Saturday, acquitted self-styled godman, Chandraswami, in a 14-year-old Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (FERA) case. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had accused the godman of violating the FERA terms in a defamation suit filed by him 26 years ago.

Additional Metropolitan Magistrate A.K. Pandey said the ED failed to establish that the “accused Nemi Chand Jain alias Chandraswami had the knowledge about deposit of the money (6,000 Euros) in a defamation suit filed by him in 1986 in London against Lakhu Bhai Pathak.” Counsel for Chandraswami, Santosh Chauriah, said, “They did not know exactly who paid the money on his behalf.

Sharma to file nomination tomorrow in Jaipur

New Delhi, Jun 6 (PTI) Union Commerce Minister Anand Sharma will be filing his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections in Jaipur tomorrow. Sharma, who has been made the Congress nominee for the elections to the RS from Rajasthan, would be reaching Jaipur today for early filing of his nomination tomorrow.

Later, he will be proceeding to Turkey to attend an international conference on security. The Congress High Command yesterday ended suspense over his nomination by fielding him in the Rajya Sabha polls from Rajasthan, two months after the expiry of his term in the House.

57-year old Sharma, who hails from Himachal Pradesh, shifts to Rajasthan as his party was not in a position to get him re-elected from his home state, where BJP runs the government. His term expired on April 2 and since then there was speculation over fielding him from Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Sharma”s shifting to Rajasthan resulted in dashing the hopes of former Union Minister Santosh Bagrodia who failed to get renomination. This will be Sharma”s third term in the Upper House.

Anti Naxal operations in West Bengal

Lalgarh/ Kolkata, Mar 27 (ANI): The government offices in Lalgarh have been closed following operation ”Green Hunt” by the state and central forces in West Bengal.

All the government offices here are closed that includes the offices of the Block Development Officer (BDO), the ration department and the forest range.

Authorities have contended that the offices have been closed for security reasons and thwart possible attack by Maoists.
Maoists are doing their best to provoke villagers, who find it difficult to carry on their routine activities due to the closure of government establishments.

“We are facing too much trouble. We can”t do any work from BDO office. We are poor people and farmers. All our relevant paperwork has come to a standstill,” said Hiren Mahato, a local farmer.

“Ration card – exchange card, certificates for children, all are pending,” he added.

Lalgarh is regarded as the stronghold of suspected Maoist rebels and it has witnessed a spate of violent and bloody incidents over the past couple of months.

Meanwhile, in Kolkata some leftist groups demonstrated against anti-Maoist ”Green Hunt” operation.

“We are opposing it because this is aggression against the people,” said Communist Party of India (Marxist-Lenin) General Secretary Santosh Rana.

“The government wants to hand over a large area of land and forest and what-not to multinationals and, for that purpose, it is being launched. So, we are opposing it,” Rana added. (ANI)

Communists protest against Centre”s anti-Maoist operation in Kolkata

Kolkata, Mar 27 (ANI): Scores of Communists took to the streets in Kolkata on Friday to protest against the Central Government”s anti-Maoist ”Green Hunt” operation.

Gathering under the banner of the ”Struggling Left Consolidation”, the protestors took part in a rally that demanded the suspension of ”Operation Green Hunt”.

Earlier this week, the Maoists had called for a 48-hour shutdown in the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh, and three districts of Maharashtra, protesting against the Union Government”s operation.

The Maoist rebels had on February 22 offered a conditional 72-day ceasefire through the media, and said they are willing to talk to the government if it aborts Operation Green Hunt. Many believe the truce offer is a ruse to regroup.

The Maoists contend they are fighting for the rights of the poor, marginal farmers and the landless labourers.

Most Maoist rebels have ignored repeated calls from the government to renounce violence and negotiate. Instead, they have stepped up their attacks in recent months, prompting the government to go after them in a concerted manner.

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram had on February 12 defended the use of force against the Maoists, saying it was the legitimate right of the government to establish law and order, build infrastructure and set up welfare measures.

He expressed confidence that the Centre would be able to get rid of the Maoist menace over the next four years. Once the areas are cleared of Maoist elements, development work would be pursued expeditiously.

Referring to a reported offer of talks made by the Maoists through the media recently, Chidambaram said, “Why aren”t the Maoists making a simple statement that we abjure violence?” (ANI)

Doctors’ strike hits Mumbai patients

Mumbai, July 9 (ANI): The indefinite strike by over 4,000 resident doctors has affected patients in Mumbai badly.

The doctors want a salary hike and an increase in their monthly stipend. They have stopped working since 8 pm Tuesday.

The strike has taken a toll on patients, making their lives miserable. They are now running from pillar to post to get admission.

“I came here for treatment but was told that doctors are on strike. People are coming from various parts of the city but have returned disappointed. This is a very serious issue. The whole system is suffering,” claimed Santosh Kumar Singh, a distressed patient.

Their relatives have also complained that they are being refused admission.

“All senior doctors are on strike, the junior doctors cannot handle things. They told me to take the patient (wife) somewhere else. Where should I take her? Other hospitals ask for more money, where do I get the money from?” said Prajapati Shyamsunder.

The hospital authorities, however, claimed that they have made arrangements to deal with the situation.

“We have senior doctors, we have Additional Medical Officer coming from peripheral hospitals who are helping us and our services are working around the clock,” said Dr Sandhya Kamat, Dean, Lokmanya Tilak Hospital, Mumbai.

Resident doctors in all states are covered by a central residency scheme.

In Delhi, for instance, resident doctors get about 921.17 dollars a month for an eight-hour shift, while the resident doctors working in Maharashtra for 24-hour shift draw only 307 dollars per month. (ANI)

Gets credit line of $50 mln from BB and T

* Repays all amounts due to Deutsche Bank

April 14 (Reuters) – Gladstone Investment Corp GAIN.O said it entered into an agreement for a $50 million revolving line of credit with Branch Banking and Trust Co (BB and T) and has fully repaid all amounts due to Deutsche Bank AG under a previous arrangement.

“The BB and T facility may be expanded up to $125 million through the addition of other committed lenders to the facility,” the investment company said in a statement.

The BB and T facility matures on April 14, 2010, and if it is not renewed or extended, all principal and interest will be payable within one year of the maturity date, the company said.

Separately in a regulatory filing, Gladstone said it had agreed to sell 29 of the 34 senior syndicated loans that were held in its portfolio as on December 31, 2008.

It said the loans had a cost value of about $102 million, or 22 percent of the cost value of its total investments.

In February, Gladstone Investment said it does not have available funds under its existing line of credit to make new investments, after it had announced it may breach covenants under its credit facility. [ID:nBNG424099]

Maoists bag three seats in Nepal by-polls; NC suffers setback

Shirish B Pradhan Kathmandu, Apr 12 (PTI) Nepal’s ruling Maoists have bagged three out of six Parliamentary seats, including one from the main opposition NC’s stronghold, in the April 10 by-polls in what is seen as a boost to former rebels against whom a stir was launched by the ally CPN-UML which asked them to rein in their “violent” cadres. Unified CPN-Maoist retained Rolpa and Kaski constituencies besides registering victory in Kachanpur, which was a Nepali Congress (NC) stronghold, in the by-elections for six vacant seats of the 601-strong Constituent Assembly.

NC, CPN-UML and Madhesi People’s Rights Forum received one seat each in Morang-7, Morang-5 and Dhanusha-5 constituencies respectively. In Rolpa-2 constituency, Maoist candidate Santosh Budha Magar won the seat vacated by Prime Minister Prachanda, who had emerged victorious from two places in last year’s Constituent Assembly polls.

Another Maoist candidate Krishna Bahadur Gurung bagged Kaski1 constituency, which was vacated by Maoist minister Dev Gurung who was also elected from two places last year. In a jolt to the Nepali Congress, the opposition party was defeated by the Maoists in Kachanpur-4 constituency vacated by its leader Sher Bahadur Deuba, while in Dhanusha-5 its candidate Chandra Mohan Yadav, son of President Ram Baran Yadav, lost to CPN-UML’s Raghubir Mahaseth.

Former premier leads Nepal to bypoll voting

Kathmandu, April 10 (IANS) The architect of Nepal’s peace process and former prime minister Girija Prasad Koirala led the voting Friday as the Himalayan republic held its first bypoll to elect lawmakers to six seats in five constituencies.

The 84-year-old Koirala defied the scorching heat of the plains and pre-poll violence in his home town Biratnagar to be among the first voters in Morang district, where his nephew Shekhar Koirala is battling regional party Madhesi Janadhikar Forum.

The bypolls will give the public verdict on the performance of the parties after last year’s historic election and strengthen democracy in Nepal, the dour Koirala told waiting journalists.

A total of 444,000 voters will choose new lawmakers out of 139 contestants, which include only 10 women.

Five of the seats fell vacant after five political heavyweights, who won from two constituencies each in the April 2008 elections, vacated them.

They include Nepal’s first Maoist Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal `Prachanda’, who has relinquished his second seat in Rolpa district, regarded as the cradle of the Maoist movement that succeeded in ending Nepal’s 239-year-old line of kings.

The others are former PM Sher Bahadur Deuba and three current ministers.

The sixth seat was vacated by Koirala’s party man Ram Baran Yadav, who became republic Nepal’s first president.

Large turnouts were reported at the polling booths where voters are using electronic voting machines gifted by neighbour India. Reports said the process was peaceful despite the abduction of a communist candidate from Dhanusha district, Yadav’s home constituency.

Santosh Shah was abducted by an armed group, the Terai National Liberation Army, from Janakpur town in Dhanusha Thursday. He is yet to be traced despite a massive manhunt by police and appeals by the Election Commission as well as his party, the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist, for his release.

Besides Koirala’s nephew, who lost the election last year, another heavyweight kin is also in the fray.

The president’s son, Chandra Mohan Yadav, a radiologist at Kathmandu’s Bir Hospital, quit his profession to take the plunge in politics.

Voting will continue till 5 p.m. with the results to be declared by Sunday.

The bypolls will be an acid test for the ruling Maoist party, whose popularity has been falling since it swept the last polls and formed the government.

Though their pledge to lay down the gun won them votes, now there are growing doubts about the former guerrillas’ commitment to peace and ability to control their cadres, who have been running amok, attacking opponents and even allies.

The Prachanda government also faces growing hostility from its own coalition partner, the communists, and a crippling power crisis that has forced hundreds of industries to close and the economy to reel.

Between Earth and Heaven

Painting as a medium has the ability to transform the human soul and take one back to one’s own soul, discover oneself and be liberated,” says artist Santosh Mahadik about the first ever joint exhibition that he is holding with his colleague Sachin Akalekar on April 4.

The exhibition has been titled Themes from Earth and Heaven, as the paintings display Mahadik’s love for rustic themes, doors, windows, and rural backgrounds which symbolises the earth and the artist’s tryst with freedom, liberty, and a sense of feeling free, which symbolises heaven. “Basically it is an exhibition where a perscan find reflections of life,” says Sachin Akalekar, the second partner from the artist’s duo.

Both Akalekar and Mahadik have been painting commercially for the last three years. While Sachin has had his paintings showcased at art festivals in Dubai and Goa, Mahadik

has to his credit exhibitions by Art for Heart’s Sake. Speaking more about this Sachin says, “Basically we both have full time jobs, while I am a web designer,

Santosh owns his own advertising studio, in spite of that we find time to pursue our interests in painting, as a result even though we know a lot about the finer nuances of painting we prefer to bill ourselves as commercial artists.”

Beginning on April 4, the exhibition will conclude on April 10, and will be held at the Indiaart Gallery. A total of 45 paintings will be on display and also for sale. The prices of which range from Rs 5000 – 1 lakh.

“The exhibition is basically a gift to our teacher,

Prof D S Khatawkar who taught us everything that we know about paintings today. The paintings are done in acrylic and have a myriad range of hues. The sizes of the canvas range from 4 by 4 ft. to 4 by 7 ft. This contemporary style gives the rural ethos a sense of timelessness and along with it ushers in a belief that combines beauty and magic and takes the person back in time to his or her own soul,” adds Mahadik

Meditation Park in Uttar Pradesh suffers from neglect

Kushinagar, Jan 19 (ANI): Meditation Park in Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh is in bad shape. Lack of maintenance has lead to its deterioration.

“This park was built with the intention to help people unwind themselves, so they can come here to relax for a while. But the condition of this park is getting worse day-by-day,” said Santosh Kumar, a resident.

Although this park is having international appeal attached to it, still no foreign tourists or domestic visitors try to venture around this park. According to some residents, this park has also turned out to be a dingy den for anti-social goons.

“I agree that there have been some loopholes in maintenance for example there was a fountain that is not working. But we can’t do anything about it because we only get 1.83 lakh from government for maintenance of this park. In such a meager amount, we have to look after employee’s salaries, maintenance of the paths and beautification work also,” said Vikas Verma, Forest Conservationist, Gorakhpur region.

Clearly, the main purpose of building this park was to epitomize meditation and importance of relaxation. But because of lack of maintenance, all the efforts and novel thoughts have gone down the drain.

The Japanese Meditation Park was an Indo-Japanese project. This park was built in 1992-1993. Sixty-eight Lakh rupees were allocated for the construction of this park.

Kushinagar is one of the famous Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Uttar Pradesh.ord Buddha attained salvation at this place.

Kushinagar is also an eminent tourist spot and many foreign tourists visit this place every year. By Pawan Kumar Shah (ANI)
