Rambus Inc’s stock driven by lawsuit outcome-Barron’s

NEW YORK, April 25 (Reuters) – Chip designer Rambus Inc’s (RMBS.O) future stock performance hinges on the outcome of its $12 billion lawsuit against Micron Technology (MU.O) and Hynix Semiconductor Inc (000660.KS), Barron’s said in its April 26 edition.

Stocks | Technology

With a victory, analysts said the company’s stock could surge to $50 from around $25, the financial newspaper reported. But without a “juicy settlement or court award” the company’s shares could stumble.

Barron’s said for Rambus shares to leap, the outcome of its suit against Micron and Hynix would have to be more lucrative than its settlement with Samsung. Without a rich settlement, the stock could slide to as low as $15.

Rambus shares closed 6.4 percent higher Friday to $25.04 on the Nasdaq. (Reporting by Deepa Seetharaman, editing by Maureen Bavdek)

South Korea shares post fresh 21-mth closing high

SEOUL, April 5 (Reuters) – South Korea shares edged up 0.09 percent to a fresh 21-month closing high on Monday, as key exporters such as Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) extended gains on steady foreign buying, offsetting weakness in shipyard stocks.

The Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) finished up 1.50 points at 1,724.99 points.

Foreign investors were buyers of a net 186 billion won ($165.2 million) worth of shares, picking up stocks for a 17th consecutive session, the longest buying streak since August, 2008. Domestic institutions were sellers of a net 292 billion won.

Shares in Samsung Electronics finished up 1.52 percent to 870,000 won, hitting a new historical closing high, while LG Display (034220.KS) advanced 2.21 percent.

“Foreign appetite towards Samsung Electronics shares will hold up steadily as the company is expected to post record high earnings for this quarter, and such earnings momentum is set to continue into second quarter. We see shares rising to 900,000 won without much difficulty,” said Hong Hyeon-ki, equity management head at Dongbu Securities.

The company is expected to release its earnings guidance tomorrow.

Samsung Electronics, the world’s biggest electronics firm by revenue, saw shares receive a further boost by news that Apple Inc’s (AAPL.O)’s iPad carries parts that it manufactures.

Shares of Hyundai Motor (005380.KS), South Korea’s top automaker, continued their rise following strong March sales and were up 1.95 percent to a new record closing high of 130,500 won.

NHN Corp (035420.KS) ended up 2.16 percent after South Korea’s top Internet portal and Web search service said on Monday it was considering buying Japanese Internet portal Livedoor Co. to strengthen its operations in Japan.[ID:nTOE63400J]

“Livedoor is a prominent blog service provider [in Japan] and its acquisition is expected to strengthen NHN’s positioning in Japan,” said Wayne Lee, an analyst at Woori Investment & Securities.

Meanwhile shipbuilders fell across the board, with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (042660.KS) declining 4.07 percent and STX Offshore & Shipbuilding (067250.KS) down 5.95 percent.

“Shares in shipyards are under pressure as there are little signs of improvements in fundamentals, while raw material prices are seen going up,” said Joey Lee, an analyst at Shinhan Investment Corporation, adding that some order cancellations or delays were also expected this year.

Banks also retreated, led by Woori Finance Holdings (053000.KS), which lost 4.68 percent.

Construction and shipbuilding sectors’ continued sectoral difficulties pointed to banks’ exposure to the sectors and dampened sentiment towards the issues, analysts said. Decliners outnumbered advancers 540 to 274, with 53 issues ending flat.

Trading volume stood at 415.4 million shares worth 5.4 trillion won, compared with 343 million shares worth 6 trillion won in the previous session.

The KOSPI 200 June futures index KSc1 ended up 1.50 points at 228.55, and the KOSPI 200 spot index .KS200 rose 0.79 points at 227.48.

The junior Kosdaq market .KQ11 ended 1.91 percent lower to close at 505.13.

Greenpeace hits Samsung for delaying toxic phase-out

International environmental group Greenpeace hit out at Samsung on Wednesday for reneging on a promise to remove harmful substances from its electronics products.

At issue is the presence of Brominated Flame Retardants (BFRs) in Samsung gadgets. The toxic chemicals have the potential to damage the environment and harm human health and their elimination has been a major goal of Greenpeace in the electronics sector.

Samsung was one of the first companies to publically voice support for a phase-out, and in 2004 issued a joint-statement with Greenpeace saying it would work to rid them from its products. The pledge earned Samsung points in Greenpeace’s Guide to Greener Electronics and by 2006 the company was promising it would end use of BFRs by Jan. 1, 2010.

But that never happened.

In November 2009, less than two months before the self-imposed deadline, Samsung e-mailed Greenpeace to say that it wouldn’t be able to deliver on the commitment, according to the group.

A delay wasn’t unique to Samsung. Dell, Lenovo and LG Electronics had pledged to rid their products of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and BFRs by the end of 2009 but have delayed this until 2011 or beyond, according to Greenpeace.

What’s different with Samsung is that the notification came less than two months before the self-imposed deadline.

“Most of the companies that committed to end of 2009 or 2010 timelines for eliminating these substances confessed to Greenpeace at least one year before the deadline that they would be unable to meet the timelines,” said Iza Kruszewska, an electronics campaigner at the organization.

“Despite repeated opportunities for Samsung to come clean, including a face-to-face meeting in Korea in July 2009, Samsung continued to communicate to Greenpeace, and on Web site, that it would meet its timelines,” she said. As of time of writing, Samsung’s European Web site continues to show the 2010 goal.

The company now says it will remove BFRs from MP3 players and digital cameras by June 1 this year and from laptop computers by Jan. 1, 2011.

That late notification meant that Samsung avoided attracting a penalty point in the Greenpeace electronics guide until the last moment. It’s got one now and Greenpeace threatened to remove another point if it doesn’t speed up its progress in removing BFRs and PVC.

“Samsung is lagging far behind in the mobile phone and PCs product range, not offering a single model that is even partially free of PVC and BFRs,” Greenpeace said in a statement. “If Samsung is serious about its green intentions, it needs to play catch up with competitors like Nokia and Sony Ericsson and Apple.”
