South Africa games moved from Jamaica due to violence

The violent situation in Jamaica has led cricket authorities to move a one-day international and the first test against South Africa to Trinidad, the West Indies Cricket Board said on Wednesday.

The fifth one-day international on June 3 and the opening test from June 10, both scheduled for Sabina Park in the Jamaican capital Kingston, will now be held at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

Kingston has suffered four days of violence with security forces fighting armed supporters of a fugitive alleged drug lord in clashes that have killed nearly 50 people.

Death toll rises to 36 in Kolkata”s Park Street fire

Kolkata, Mar 29 (ANI): The death toll from the fire that swept through the floors of the multi-storied Stephen Court building in Park Street on March 23 has gone up to 36, following the recovery of one more body on Monday from the fifth floor of the building.

Kolkata Municipal Corporation official said: “We are working very carefully to remove the derbris, so a lot of time is being taken,” adding that nearly 75 percent of the work of removing the rubble is finished and the rest will be done tonight.

West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services Minister Pratim Chatterjee had on March 28 said the Stephen Court fire has recorded the highest ever death toll in any fire incident in the metropolis even as search for the missing is still on.

“In my 14-year stint as minister, this is the worst fire tragedy,” he added as 34 deaths were reported on Sunday.

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee had on March 23 slammed the disaster management of the West Bengal Government for failing to control the fire and directed a railway emergency team from Sealdah to assist people trapped inside the building.

“I spoke to the Defence Ministry for sending the army. The ministry has issued instructions to send the army,” Banerjee told the media at the scene of fire on Tuesday, adding that the West Bengal Government should have sought the help of the army.

Banerjee said she did not want to make a political point, and had deliberately delayed her arrival at the site so that no one would accuse her of hampering rescue efforts.

“I was keeping an eye on matters and we waited for one-and-a half hours before coming here,” she said.

West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services Minister Pratim Chatterjee had then blamed the excessive traffic for the delay in rescue efforts, adding that the death toll could rise. (ANI)

Death toll rises to 24 in Kolkata”s Park Street fire

Kolkata, Mar 24 (ANI): The death toll from the fire that swept through the three floors of the multi-storied Stephen Court building on Park Street is now reported to be over 24, with several people still missing.

At least 20 people have been hospitalized and several others are reported to be in critical condition.

Over 17 burnt bodies have been recovered from the building.

“While six persons died either by jumping from the burning floors of the building, or sustaining burns during the day, 10 charred bodies were found late last night,” said fire brigade sources.

“It is not possible to say whether they were male or female. They were charred beyond recognition,” they added

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday slammed the disaster management of the West Bengal Government for failing to control the fire and directed a railway emergency team from Sealdah to assist people trapped inside the building.

West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services Minister Pratim Chatterjee blamed the excessive traffic for the delay in rescue efforts, adding that the death toll could rise.

There was utter confusion on Tuesday as an attempt was being carried out to find out in which floor of the building did the fire broke out with panic gripping those trapped inside. (ANI)

Worst Brit footie team ends 90-match losing streak with victory!

London, Sept 16 (ANI): Harraby Athletic, the worst football team in Britain, has finally tasted victory – after a losing streak of 90 matches.

The side has been on a losing spree since three years and was badly mauled in a 19-0 match in 2006.

The team concedes 10 goals a game on an average and their goalie has seen the ball netted over 400 times in less than three seasons.

The under-14 squad celebrated their first win after beating Edenvale Hawks 3-2 at their home ground, Hammond’s Park.

Sky News quoted coach Brett Preston as saying: “Pure determination has got us there and their faces after the game meant everything.

“All week I’ve had other managers phoning me up to congratulate us on our achievement.

“When we lost our first game 19-0, it could have even been a higher score as the opposing manager tried to help us by swapping players around and telling them to ease off.

“They just couldn’t help scoring against us. Gradually over time, the scores have come down, but we’re always bottom of the table and we’ve never even won a friendly match.”

Harraby has only one point in the Longhorn Youth Football League after the opponents did not play the game.

It consists of players who are either playing for the first time or have been rejected by other teams.he coach said: “They know that if they leave, they might not get the chance of a game as they might not get into another team.”

However, Preston also praised the determination of his boys.

He said: “The boys have been prepared to stick at it and been willing to learn. They turn up for training in all weathers and really deserve a win at last.” (ANI)

Lily Allen wants to buy house to rent out

Allen, 24, who already owns a swanky 700,000 pounds three-bed house in Queen’s Park, northwest London, wants to take advantage of the low prices offered at the moment, and she hopes to earn extra cash during the recession.
“Lily is quite careful when it comes to money and realises she may not be well off for ever,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

“She’s looking to take advantage of the low house prices and will rent out,” the source added. (ANI)

London is Europe’s dirtiest city

London, May 4 (ANI): Heading to London? Well, here’s a piece of information for you-the UK capital is Europe’s dirtiest, most expensive and has the worst cuisine, according to a poll of travellers.

The survey of 2,376 European travellers by the TripAdvisor company also called the British capital to inhabit the worst-dressed locals.

If this was not enough, London was reckoned to have the most tourist traps, but also the best free attractions, easily the best public parks and the best nightlife.

It was for the second time in row that London had been voted the dirtiest European city in the poll, and that too with a huge margin.

A total of 36 per cent travellers claimed the Queen’s city as the dirtiest- well ahead of Paris in second place with 9 per cent.

However, almost 50 per cent of those polled rated London best for public parks, with Paris a distant second with just 7 per cent.

“I have travelled quite a lot and there are NO parks in the world like the ones in London, especially St James’s Park,’ The Independent quoted a traveller as writing a review on the TripAdvisor website.

The cleanest city was considered to be Copenhagen, while the bargain city was Prague, the friendliest was Dublin and the most boring was Brussels.

Paris had the best-dressed locals and the best cuisine, but was easily the least friendly. (ANI)

Canadian Tamils plan massive protest against Sri Lanka

Toronto, May. 4 (ANI): Demanding that Canada, US and the UN to intervene to end the Sri Lankan crisis, tens of thousands of Tamil Canadians will form a human chain on Tuesday in downtown Toronto to protest against the Lankan Army’s offensive against the LTTE.

“The chain will form at noon at Union Station and, depending on how many people there are, occupy sidewalks north along Yonge St., west along Bloor St. to Avenue Rd., then south along Queen’s Park and University Ave. and Front St. back to Union,” said Aranee Muru, spokesperson of Coalition to Stop the War in Sri Lanka.

Muru said no streets would be blocked, as happened last week when a protest outside the American consulate forced police to block off University Ave. and neighboring streets for several days.

“We will stay on the sidewalk. We are out there to create more awareness. We don’t want to be disruptive,” The Star quoted her, as saying.

The organizers are not sure about when the protest, will end.

“It’s really up to the people…how long they want to stay,” she said.

They said they are expecting large numbers to attend the event. According to some estimates, over 200,000 people of Tamil origin live in the Greater Toronto Area.

Toronto police say they’re still planning their response. Senior officers will speak with protest organizers and then formulate a plan.

Organizers planning Tuesday’s demonstration have asked participants to come downtown by subway and get out at any stop.

Tamil organizers say they are protesting to draw attention to a “massive buildup of Sri Lankan armed forces” in the northern battle zone.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam have been fighting a 25-year war with the Sri Lankan Government for a separate ethnic Tamil homeland. (ANI)

Shearer still awaiting first Newcastle win

London – Portsmouth denied Alan Shearer his first win as Newcastle United manager after a 0-0 draw at St James’s Park on Monday night. The point lifts Newcastle into 18th place, above neighbours Middlesbrough on goal difference on 31 points with just four matches remaining. Portsmouth remain four places higher on 38 points.

With Newcastle sitting in the relegation zone before the match, Shearer had staked his team’s hopes of survival on winning their three remaining home games, starting with the match against Portsmouth.

But the Newcastle fans and their manager are now facing a daunting task to remain in the Premier League after Portsmouth dented their hopes further as they still sit three points from safety.

Chances were few and far between for both sides throughout much of the match as Portsmouth looked to sit deep and hit Newcastle on the counter attack.

But with the home side becoming increasingly desperate to find the breakthrough as the match wore on, both sides will feel they could have found a winning goal.

The best chance for Newcastle fell to striker Michael Owen midway through the second half, but the England striker could only shoot weakly straight at Portsmouth goalkeeper David James.

And Richard Hughes’s headed effort against the post for Portsmouth proved to be the closest the game came to a goal with ten minutes remaining. (dpa)

Obama arriving in the UK with ‘The Beast’

London, Mar.31 (ANI): When US President Barack Obama touches down in London tonight, he will be cruising the British capital’s streets in the limo dubbed “The Beast”.
According to Sky News, “The Beast”, a 250,000 pound vehicle, is equipped with rocket-propelled grenades, a night-vision camera and pump-action shotguns to destroy would-be attackers.

“The Beast’s” titanium superstructure is capable of shielding the president from a chemical weapons attack. Its sealed interior forms an impregnable “panic room” if the vehicle is attacked.

The car contains a tear-gas cannon, oxygen tanks and bottles of the president’s AB blood. It can drive at speeds of more than 60 mph with punctured tyres.

The five-inch rocket proof glass is so thick that Obama needs flourescent light to read in the darkness

He will land in London with an entourage of 500 – including 200 secret service staff and a medical team carrying pints of his own blood type.

Obama will use a plane, a helicopter and the limousine and be followed by a fleet of ambulances and decoy vehicles.

Manholes in city roads have been bolted down, bins removed and British security snipers placed in tall buildings across the city.
Obama is due to touch down at Stansted Airport at 8 p.m. local time aboard the presidential aircraft Air Force One.

The Boeing 747-200B has its own gym and a presidential suite, complete with a small dining room.

Among officials on the flight will be a military officer carrying America’s nuclear missile launch codes. Should he need to, Obama can launch a nuclear strike from the craft.

The plane – which can travel at speeds of 630 mph – is fitted with armour-plated wings able to withstand a nuclear blast from the ground and flares to confuse enemy missiles. It has 85 telephones and 19 televisions.

From Stansted the president will be flown to the US ambassador’s residence in Regent’s Park, London.

He arrives there in a VH-3D helicopter known as Marine One that will fly across London alongside a group of identical decoy aircraft.

While in London the president’s 200 secret servicemen will watch over him – conspicuous with their shirt-cuff radios, dark suits and Ray-Ban sunglasses.
Also among the 500-strong entourage will be his 6ft 5in personal aide Reggie Love. Love works out with the president and watches sport with him back at his hotel suite.

He will be trusted to keep the president supplied with chewing gum – which he chews to beat his old cigarette habit.

A selection of iced teas will keep the president refreshed in his various modes of transport.

His wife Michelle will have eight of her own staff, including a secretary, a press officer and bodyguards.

Obama will meet with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown one-to-one on Wednesday as well as holding meetings with Russian president Dmitry Medvedev and Chinese president Hu Jintao.

He will also meet the Queen at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday afternoon in what is seen as the formal showpiece of the packed working schedule.

Security teams have swept venues the Obamas will visit for electronic bugs, food has been tested for poison and even the air quality has been measured for bacteria.

Security experts say the threat of an attack against Obama is high. (ANI)

‘Hard to pick winner for ICC World Twenty20′, says Lara

Trinidad (West Indies), Mar.16 (ANI): Former West Indies captain Brian Lara lifted the ICC World Twenty20 trophy in Trinidad on Sunday and then admitted it was tough to pick a side that might do the same on 21 June at Lord’s.

But if he had to choose a likely winner the batting legend said the finalists in the inaugural event in 2007, India and Pakistan, might be the ones to look out for because of their batting strength and an ability to innovate.

Lara displayed the trophy to a packed house at the Queen’s Park Oval during the interval of the T20 International between the West Indies and England, part of the promotion of June’s event that will take place in England.

And afterwards he said: “It was a great feeling to pick up the trophy before the winning captain and nice to be part of the build-up but, as for picking a winner, it’s very hard to predict as in twenty20 cricket you never know what will happen.

“In 2007 I supported the West Indies (to win) due to the fact that, as a team, we may have been short in Test cricket but very good over a shorter game and twenty20 was a version of the game, with players like Chris Gayle, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Dwayne Bravo, I thought we would love.

“But then Bangladesh came and beat us and we didn’t win a match so that shows how difficult it is to predict. A team like India or Pakistan, accustomed to good batting tracks, flat tracks and capable of being very innovative could be the ones to walk away with the trophy,” said Lara.

Two years into his retirement from top-line cricket, Lara remains the holder of the highest score in international history thanks to his 400 not out in a Test against England in Antigua in 2004.

And although he said he still loved Test cricket above all the other formats of the game, he also agreed there was an obvious place for the twenty20 version.

“I’m still a connoisseur of Test cricket as the true test of any sportsman,” he said. “But I think twenty20 cricket is a great invention, especially for the spectator. It’s a great addition to the game and I look forward to seeing the ICC World Twenty20.”

Lara also reflected on what it was like to lift silverware at an ICC event, having done that in the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy when the West Indies produced a remarkable come-from-behind success in the final against England at The Oval.

“It was a great feeling and this from a captain not accustomed to winning anything,” he said.

“We’d just lost four Tests against England and then came back from deep trouble in the final when we were seven or eight wickets down late on.

“Courtney Browne and Ian Bradshaw were able to pull it off for us and that was an excellent feeling.

“I’ve never done it (lifted the trophy) in a World Cup but to play against all the other international countries in one tournament and win was a great feeling and definitely one of the greatest moments of my career,” he added.

he ICC World Twenty20 trophy is designed and manufactured by Links of London. It is made of silver and rhodium and weighs approximately 7.5kgs. It measures 51 cms in height with a width of 19cms at the top and 14cms at the base The ICC World Twenty20 2009 sees 12 of the top men’s teams and the top eight women’s teams competing in a best-of-the-best event at four venues – Lord’s, The Oval, Trent Bridge and Taunton (women’s matches only).

Each of the men’s and women’s semi-finals and the finals will be played as double-headers at the same venues offering great value to spectators and great exposure to the women’s game.

India won the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 in 2007 in South Africa when it beat Pakistan by five runs in the final in Johannesburg. (ANI)

Deer census commences in Chennai

Chennai, Mar 14 (ANI): The Guindy National Park (GNP) authorities, along with few voluntary organisations and college students started its annual deer census here on Saturday.

A total of 11 teams were formed with each team having 4 members for conducting the census at the particular allotted area.

The last deer census conducted by wildlife officials at the GNP, Raj Bhavan and on IIT campus’s had proved an increase in deer population.

In 2008, the population of the spotted deer was 1200.

Apart from this, 382 black buck deer were also found in the GNP and Raj Bhavan area.

In the 1998 census, the blackbuck population stood at 170, and in 1999 it rose to 200. In the succeeding year, 350 black bucks were found in all the three habitats.

“There are many deer present over here to mention. It is estimated approximately 3000 deer present in the park. This year we have started to calculate. Tomorrow there is one more session. It is very interesting and good,” said durai, a college student.

S. Subramanium, Superintendent of the Guindy National Park said such census helps the management and conservation of endangered species.

“This figures helps the management of the national park to find the carrying capacity of the national park as well as Rajbhavan area. And to find out ex-ratio and the mortality figure, help in the effective management of the wild life and conservation of endangered species,” said Subramanium.

Spread over an area of 2.82 square kilometers, the Guindy Park is considered the breathing lungs of the city and boasts of a small population of barking deer, spotted deer and black bucks.he park, set up in 1958, also has an enclosure for around 500 animals, which are a big attraction for the visitors.

There is also a children’s park, which organizes eco-camps for school kids.Despite the small area of the park, the biodiversity is amazing. The vegetation is mostly tropical dry green type and over 350 species of plants are found including trees, climbers, herbs, shrubs and grasses. (ANI)

`Beefy’Botham slams England over declaration timing

Trinidad (West Indies), Mar.11 (ANI): Former England all rounder Ian Botham has slammed the late declaration by the side in the final Test against West Indies here, branding it as “pathetic” and “weak”.

Needing victory in Trinidad to level the series, captain Andrew Strauss waited until lunch at the Queen’s Park Oval to send the hosts in to chase a target of 240 runs. The West Indies narrowly held on for a draw, closing on 114 for eight.

“They obviously have not got long memories after Antigua,” the Daily Express quoted Botham, as saying.

The West Indies on the other hand was thrilled to regain the coveted Wisden Trophy for the first time since 2000. Left with 66 overs in which to bat in their second innings after England’s lunchtime declaration, West Indies lost wickets at regular intervals but clung on tenaciously to reach the close on 114 for 8.

The heroes of the closing overs were wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin, who produced the rearguard of his life to finish unbeaten on 17 from 87 deliveries, and Fidel Edwards, their man for a cliffhanger, who reprised his nerveless role in Antigua last month by facing up to Monty Panesar with nine men round the bat, and blocking out the final five deliveries of the series.

For West Indies it was a sensational escape, their second in three Tests either side of last week’s drawn Test in Barbados, and one which sealed their first series victory since 2004.

In the process, the result vindicated Chris Gayle’s controversial tactics at the start of the game, not to mention their selection of an extra batsman.

There were indeed echoes of the third Test, in Antigua, when the tourists set West Indies a huge fourth-innings target but could only get them nine wickets down.

On Tuesday, Strauss could have ended England’s third innings when Matt Prior was bowled after his 61 from 49 balls had established a 209-run lead.

Former England all-rounder Botham added: “They should have declared when Prior went out. Do we want to win this? I think we lost the plot.”

Former England wicketkeeper Alec Stewart added: “I wanted to see the West Indies in before lunch. I think they missed a trick.”

Bob Willis added to the criticism of the declaration.

“I can’t believe they did not declare when Prior went,” the former fast bowler added.

“The only way England could win was if West Indies were going for runs.” (ANI)

Lily Allen puts diet on hold for boozy night out with pals

London, Jan 14 (ANI): Lily Allen recently gave a slip to her strict diet to enjoy a boozy night out with friends.

The singer, who is trying every trick in the book to get in shape for the launch of her second album next month, has chucked alcohol and has even turned to the late Bob Marley for inspiration on keeping trim.

However, the 23-year-old star’s diet got a big knock on January 12, when she ended up on a massive booze binge.

In fact, the starlet walked home the next day, wearing the same clothes from the night before, reports The Mirror.

He partying started sensibly though-Lily made a trip to the healthy Nobu restaurant on London’s Park Lane with pal Miquita Oliver.

Later, the girls headed to the exclusive Groucho club in Soho, where the ‘Smile’ hitmaker went through several fagging and drinking rounds.

At closing time, she got a call on her BlackBerry, and they jumped in a cab to continue the party.
