Danes happy to make their point against Dutch

(Reuters) – Denmark coach Morten Olsen will happily settle for a draw when his injury-hit team take on the Netherlands on Monday in their World Cup Group E opener without striker Nicklas Bendtner.

Sports

“A draw would be a good result for us,” Olsen told a news conference at the Soccer City stadium on Sunday. “But we have to see how the match develops to discover if that expectation is fair.”

The Danes have been hit by several injuries during their four-week preparation and will miss Bendtner, who is recovering from a groin injury.

Asked about the Bendtner situation and whether he had become part of a game of bluff between Olsen and Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk, the Dane said: “If Van Marwijk said that he expects Bendtner to feature, I can say that I expect (Arjen) Robben to play.

“I don’t know who is bluffing but I can tell you right now that Bendtner is not playing.”

Dutch winger Robben is widely expected to miss the game too with a hamstring injury.

Besides Bendtner, Denmark’s Jon Dahl Tomasson and Daniel Jensen are also carrying minor knocks and they trained separately from the rest of the squad. Both are rated doubtful for the match against the Dutch.

Olsen said the Dutch were favorites to win the opener as they had the better individual players from top clubs.

“We have prepared like we always do and we know already a lot of their players from our clubs,” said Daniel Agger, who faces his Liverpool team mates Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel.

“But tomorrow we have to stand like a team. It is a bonus match against one of the favorites for the title and we are ready for a surprise,” added Christian Poulsen.

Besides the Netherlands, Denmark will face Cameroon and Japan as their other opponents in Group E.

Atletico oust Liverpool to reach Europa final

Diego Forlan’s extra-time effort sent Atletico Madrid into the Europa League final on away goals at the expense of Liverpool after a 2-2 aggregate draw on Thursday.

Liverpool, trailing 1-0 from the first leg, drew level just before the end of the first half through Italian midfielder Alberto Aquilani’s low curling shot from inside the box.

A quiet second half set up extra time and the hosts took a 2-0 lead on the night through Yossi Benayoun’s angled strike only for Forlan to smash home the ball a few minutes later.

Atletico will meet Fulham in the May 12 final in Hamburg where they will bid to win their first major European trophy since the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1962.

The Spanish side, who face Sevilla in the King’s Cup next month, also reached the European Cup final in 1974.

“We have done really well,” Atletico coach Quique Sanchez Flores told reporters.

“Today we got stronger as the match went on and over the two legs I think we deserved to go through. I’ve not known too many better moments.”

For Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool, Europa League silverware represented a last chance to salvage a dismal season which featured an early Champions League exit and a failed Premier League title challenge.

ATTACKING INTENT

Liverpool started with all the attacking intent Benitez wanted from a side including Steven Gerrard, Aquilani, Ryan Babel and Dirk Kuyt and they forced three corners inside the first two minutes to raise Anfield hopes.

However, the visitors have been dangerous on their travels and as Liverpool lost their passing game Raul Garcia tested goalkeeper Pepe Reina with a dipping shot that was turned around the post.

The hosts’ inability to keep the ball up front frustrated the Liverpool fans but with halftime approaching Aquilani came to their rescue, stretching to meet Benayoun’s cross and curl home a low shot.

Atletico enjoyed more of the possession after the break but it was Liverpool who almost doubled their lead on 80 minutes when England fullback Glen Johnson skipped past two players before seeing his 20-metre drive tipped over.

Five-times European champions and three-times UEFA Cup winners Liverpool had produced second-leg victories twice already in the competition this season following first-leg defeats and they went ahead early in extra time.

A delightfully-chipped Lucas pass was met by Benayoun who finished well from a tight angle.

Anfield went from raptures to stunned silence shortly afterwards when Jose Antonio Reyes easily beat Johnson to set up first-leg scorer Forlan, who smashed home from five metres for the decisive away goal.

Benitez said: “We were on top for a long time. We lost the game with a late goal but it was a good game.

“It was a pity the way they scored.”

Torres shoots Liverpool to easy win

Fernando Torres turned on the style to inspire Liverpool to a 4-1 victory over struggling Portsmouth at Anfield on Tuesday (AEDT) which keeps alive its hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

The Spanish international scored two and was involved in the other two as Rafael Benitez’s side scored three times in six first-half minutes to end a two-match losing run.

A shocking error by keeper Jamie Ashdown, standing in for injured England international David James, allowed Torres to open the floodgates in the 26th minute.

Liverpool supporters were still celebrating Torres’ 14th goal of the campaign when Ryan Babel pounced after clever work by the Spaniard two minutes later.

Alberto Aquilani made sure of the points in the 32nd minute, the Italian’s first goal for the club in his fifth Premier League start since joining from Roma for 17 million pounds ($28 million) last August.

Although Liverpool’s problems have been well documented, they are insignificant compared to Portsmouth’s.

Crisis club off the pitch, a team playing with admirable spirit, freedom and no little belief on it – and one win away from a second FA Cup final in three years no less.

Not that any of that disguises the fact that they have been dreadful this season – they are not bottom of the league without cause.

They arrived at Anfield on a run of just one win in 10 Premier League matches and had lost 14 of their 15 matches against teams in the top half of the Premier League.

Liverpool tripped up by Hazard

Eden Hazard crowned an enterprising display with a late goal to give Lille a 1-0 victory over beleaguered English giant Liverpool in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie this morning (AEDT).

Liverpool, which is sixth in the English Premier League after losing 1-0 to Wigan on Tuesday, was short of fluency on an uneven playing surface in northern France and sank to defeat when Hazard’s 84th-minute free kick drifted straight in.

The Belgian youngster had been a constant torment with his purposeful running and his goal, albeit fortuitous, puts his side in the driving seat prior to the return match at Anfield on March 18.

Elsewhere, Serie A giant Juventus assumed command of its Europa League last-16 tie against Fulham with a 3-1 first-leg victory.

Juve took an early lead in Turin when centre-back Nicola Legrottaglie headed home from a ninth-minute corner before right-back Jonathan Zebina extended the advantage with a thunderous 25-yard effort.

Dickson Etuhu’s deflected shot reduced the arrears but former France international David Trezeguet restored the home side’s two-goal cushion by volleying home in first-half injury time after his shot came back off the post.

Lille has lost just twice at home all season and it began the game full of intent, with Yohan Cabaye testing Jose Reina inside the first minute.

Liverpool eventually settled, though, and on 26 minutes Ryan Babel was thwarted by Lille goalkeeper Mickael Landreau after a neat one-two with Fernando Torres.

Liverpool ended the first half strongly and Landreau was twice called into action, palming away Steven Gerrard’s free kick and then springing to his feet to claw away Torres’s header.

Hazard raised the temperature in the stadium shortly before the break with a menacing dribble and shot, while Babel was first to threaten in the second period when his fierce effort stung Landreau’s palms.

Lille counter-attacked sporadically, with Pierre-Alain Frau, Cabaye and substitute Stephane Dumont all threatening from distance, while Daniel Agger narrowly avoided diverting Florent Balmont’s cross into his own goal.

Torres picked up a yellow card for persistent dissent as Liverpool became rattled, before Hazard provided the breakthrough with an in-swinging free kick from wide on the left that missed everyone and crept inside the far post.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang volleyed against the outside of the post as Lille went close to extending its advantage, while Gerrard was denied by a convergence of home defenders after surging into the penalty area in injury time.

Elsewhere, a delightful curling finish from Bosnian playmaker Zvjezdan Misimovic in the 67th minute earned Wolfsburg a 1-1 draw at Rubin Kazan in the battle of the reigning league champions from Germany and Russia.

Ruud van Nistelrooy scored his first home goal for new club Hamburg as it defeated Anderlecht 3-1, with Jonathan Legear’s superb free kick on the stroke of half-time earning the visitors an away goal.

Sporting Lisbon secured a 0-0 draw at Atletico Madrid despite the 31st-minute dismissal of defender Leandro Grimi for two bookable offences and a straight red card for Tonel in the final minute.

Meanwhile in Spain, Valencia was held to a 1-1 draw at home to last season’s runners-up Werder Bremen, which took a 24th-minute lead via a Torsten Frings penalty.

The hosts had Argentine midfielder Ever Banega dismissed in the second half for violent conduct but they drew level almost immediately through Juan Mata, who slotted home after Spain team-mate David Silva’s shot was blocked.

A last-minute Hatem Ben Arfa header earned Marseille an impressive 1-1 draw at free-scoring Portuguese league leader Benfica, while Panathiniakos, which eliminated Serie A heavyweight Roma in the last round, wase beaten 3-1 at home by Standard Liege.

Babel accuses Benitez of breaking promises

London, Sep 3 (ANI): Dutch winger Ryan Babel has accused Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez of breaking promises which could wreck his World Cup dream.

Babel now wants to join Ajax on loan after claiming he was made a scapegoat for last month’s 2-1 defeat at Spurs.

“There were all sorts of assurances and promises from the club but they have not kept them. I should get more playing time but after the first defeat of the season I was the only one who was singled out – and I lost my place,” The Sun quoted Babel, as saying.

Babel bought by Benitez for 11.5 million pounds from Ajax two years ago, has played just 14 minutes as a sub since that defeat.

He lost his place in the Holland squad for Saturday’s friendly against Japan and the midweek World Cup qualifier in Scotland – until Ibrahim Afellay’s injury saw him recalled.

“Being left out was a real shock and very worrying. I didn’t expect not to be named, I’d already booked my ticket! We will have to review the situation again in January,” he said.

“But I think half a season back at Ajax, with a World Cup coming up next summer, wouldn’t be a bad option at all. I see the current situation at Liverpool as a signal I have to be playing more,” Babel added. (ANI)

Danielle Lloyd says she’s no serial footie dater

London, May 20 (ANI): WAG Danielle Lloyd has said she does not deliberately hunt footballers – despite being with eight in the last three years.

The British glamour model appeared to be putting her foot down after Spurs boss Harry Redknapp dubbed models who dated players “busy cows”.

The 25-year-old, who is presently involved with three-year junior Jamie O’Hara, defended herself, saying she did not pre-plan who to fall in love with.

The beauty further offered advice to other potential WAGs, saying it was not an easy job being one.

“Some of these girls think they can go out and find a footballer and that it’s a shortcut to fame. That’s not true. It can be really hard. Your boyfriend has to go away for a long time,” the Daily Star quoted her as saying.

“I get so many girls who come up to me and say: ‘I just want to be you and I want to go out with a footballer.’ I always say: ‘You should go to school and get your education and do something for yourself.’

“I was planning on going to university until I won Miss England. Believe it or not, I wanted to be a forensic scientist,” she added.

Danielle met Teddy Sheringham, 43, in 2006 but they split a year later.

She has also dated Spurs striker Jermain Defoe, 26, Liverpool’s Ryan Babel, 22, Birmingham ace Marcus Bent, 31, Arsenal full-back Armand Traore, 19, Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, 22, and Spurs defender Alan Hutton, 24. (ANI)

Gerrard hails “fantastic” Liverpool

London – Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard saluted a “fantastic team performance” after his side thrashed Real Madrid 4-0 on Tuesday.

Already 1-0 up from the first leg, Liverpool advanced stylishly to the quarter-finals, suggesting their post-Christmas wobble may be over.

For Madrid, this was their biggest-ever Champions League defeat.

“The first 30 minutes we were awesome,” Gerrard said.

“We got the job done, and then in the second half it was just about seeing it out.”

Liverpool trail Premier League leaders Manchester United by seven points – and have played a game more – but could close the gap as they face their north-west rivals at Old Trafford on Sunday.

“First and foremost, it’s about enjoying tonight,” Gerrard said.

“We need to get some rest, get some treatment, then we can concentrate on Manchester United.

“It’s going to be a difficult game. They’re a fantastic team, but we’re confident after tonight and we know we can give it our best shot.”

Liverpool were emphatic victors, doubling their first-leg advantage after 16 minutes as Fernando Torres converted Dirk Kuyt’s cross.

Gerrard marked his 100th European appearance with the next two – the first from the penalty spot, the second calmly side-footed into the top corner from Ryan Babel’s cross.

The much-mocked Andrea Dossena, on as a substitute, made it 4-0 with two minutes remaining from Javier Mascherano’s square ball.

For Torres, who played with heavy strapping on his injured ankle, the victory was particularly sweet.

“I was working all week to stay fit,” the Spain striker said. “I wanted to play Madrid because of my past with Atletico. The pain doesn’t matter

“It’s a massive game for the fans and it’s a victory for them.” (dpa)

Liverpool crush Real as Bayern hit Sporting for seven

Liverpool crush Real as Bayern hit Sporting for seven Hamburg – Liverpool cruised into the quarter-finals of the Champions League Tuesday with a 4-0 victory over Real Madrid, while Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Villarreal also progressed.

Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard, Ryan Babel and Andrea Dossena were all on target for Liverpool at Anfield to ensure a 5-0 aggregate win and it could have been even more against a poor Real side but for some goalkeeping heroics from Iker Casillas.

Torres opened the scoring for Liverpool on 16 minutes, slotting home a pass from Dirk Kuyt, although Real defender Pepe looked to have been fouled.

There was further misfortune for Madrid 10 minutes later when Liverpool were awarded a penalty after Gabriel Heinze was harshly punished for handball by referee Frank De Bleeckere although the ball came off his shoulder.

Steven Gerrard duly converted the resultant spot kick and Ryan Babel secured the tie with a spectacular volley two minutes after the restart. Dossena completed Real’s humiliation, heading home a Javier Mascherano cross shortly before full-time to make it 4-0.

Leading 5-0 from the first leg, Bayern thumped hapless Sporting Lisbon 7-1 to register a record 12-1 aggregate win for a Champions League round of 32 stage.

Lukas Podolski netted a brace and an own goal from Anderson Polga made it 3-0 to the German champions after 34 minutes, although there was still time for Joao Moutinho to pull one back for the Portuguese before Bastian Schweinsteiger made it 4-1 for Bayern at the break.

Mark van Bommel netted from six metres on 74 minutes, a Miroslav Klose penalty eight minutes from time and an even later strike from Thomas Mueller completed the rout for Bayern.

Chelsea suffered a fright before eventually drawing 2-2 with Juventus to progress 3-2 on aggregate.

A crisp finish from Vincenzo Iaquinta put the Italian in front after 19 minutes levelled the tie on aggregate but Michael Essien bundled home a vital away goal for Chelsea on the stroke of half-time after Frank Lampard’s shot was deflected.

Juve’s cause was made even more difficult when defender Giorgio Chiellini was sent off with 19 minutes remaining after picking up a second yellow card for a foul on Didier Drogba.

However, a penalty from Alessandro del Piero briefly gave Juve hope before Drogba ended the tie as a contest with Chelsea’s second goal seven minutes from time.

Villarreal are also into the next round after a 2-1 victory over Panathinaikos to register a 3-2 aggregate win.

With the tie finely poised at 1-1 from the first leg, Villarreal struck first thanks to a strike from Ariel Ibagaza at the edge of the area. Vangelos Mantzios equalised for the Greeks with a header from six metres before Jose Llorente ensured victory with the Spaniards’ second goal, 20 minutes from time.

The Champions League continues Wednesday when AS Roma face Arsenal, Barcelona entertain Olympique Lyon, Porto welcome Atletico Madrid and Manchester United take on Inter Milan. dpa
