S.Africa’s rand holds firm vs dlr, futures edge up

JOHANNESBURG, July 27 (Reuters) – South Africa’s rand touched a 3-month high against the dollar on Tuesday and looked set to hold its ground, helped by firmer stocks and speculation of a possible purchase of local group Nedbank by HSBC.

The JSE’s Top-40 September futures contract ALSIc1 ticked up just 0.17 percent ahead of the start of trade on the local bourse at 0700 GMT. European shares looked set to open flat after reaching a five-week high in the previous session.

At 0642 GMT the rand ZAR=D3 traded at 7.3460 to the greenback, off just 0.08 percent from Monday’s close at 7.3400.

The domestic currency briefly flirted with 7.3201/dollar earlier on Tuesday, the strongest it has been since April 30, Reuters data shows.

“I think there’s some interim support around these levels of 7.33/34, but overall there’s still very positive equity markets and positive sentiment,” foreign currency dealer based in Johannesburg said.

“Combined with rumours of some more FDI … with foreign suitors for Nedbank, the rands looks to be in good shape. I think that resistence will now come in at 7.38/40 and in this move we should target around lower 7.20′s.”

Government bonds were firmer in earlier trade, pulling the yield on the benchmark 2015 ZAR157= note three basis points lower to 7.60 percent hile that for the longer-dated 2036 ZAR209= dipped half a basis point to 8.64 percent. (Reporting by Stella Mapenzauswa; Editing by Patrick Graham)

China Mobile parent names new president

Telecommuncations Services

Under the shuffle, Wang, chairman of publicly traded China Mobile, the world’s largest mobile carrier by subscribers, would also become the parent company’s party secretary, China Mobile said in a statement.

Analysts said the shuffle was part of a move to make China Mobile’s parent company, China Mobile Communications Corp, more systematic and business-like, including the new formation of a board of directors that Wang will head.

Wang has already passed the official retirement age of 60 and frequent rumours have cropped up from time to time that he may retire soon. (Reporting by Doug Young; Editing by Chris Lewis)

DMK’s U-turn: post-dated RS seat offer to PMK

Having served the stick a year ago during Lok Sabha elections, the DMK has now decided to dangle the carrot for former ally PMK, offering a Rajya Sabha seat for former Union minister Anbumani Ramadoss, though not immediately.

Responding to the efforts by the PMK to come back aboard the alliance, the DMK high-level decision making committee resolved on Sunday that the estranged ally could be given a seat to the Upper House, though not this time. The term of six members, including Anbumani Ramadoss of the PMK, is expiring in June, and election to those seats will be conducted in three weeks. Party founder S Ramadoss had written a letter to Chief Minister and DMK president M Karunanidhi for support, as the party found itself in no position to get him re-elected. The DMK committee that met on Sunday decided to offer one Rajya Sabha seat when the vacancy arises next time – in the meantime, there is Assembly election and elections to the recently-revived Legislative Council in which the PMK is, thus, expected to support the alliance.

“I hope the PMK will accept the offer,” said Karunanidhi after announcing the decision of the party, while a resolution adopted by the meeting urged both sides to move on with the focus firmly on the future.

The party also announced its three candidates for the Rajya Sabha election – KP Ramalingam, S Thangavelu and TN Selvaganapathy – despite there being rumours that one seat could be gifted to Congress, who are now left with one assured seat and many leaders in contention.

Though it is not yet clear what stand would Ramadoss and his party take, the party does not have much options after hopping from alliance to alliance, calling itself the ‘winning element’ – a claim brought to ground by the DMK a year ago.

From the position of the ‘influential minority’, PMK’s clout was reduced considerably after the party failed to get elected even one of its seven LS candidates. Soon after the results were out, its relation with alliance leader AIADMK turned sour, and the major ally went back on its word – an assurance given while the pact was inked before the general elections – on supporting junior Ramadoss’ candidature.

The past one year saw the PMK gravitating towards the ruling party – supporting it inside and outside the Assembly, and more importantly, not criticising it and leading to speculation that it was only a matter of time before the party was accommodated back into the ruling alliance, even though there were reports that a section of DMK seniors was not fully in favour admitting the unpredictable ally back.

However, what was not expected was the post-dated offer that would force the PMK to support the DMK during the Assembly elections. According to political observers, this move would not only ensure better support from the numerically-strong Vanniyar community (whom the PMK claims to represent), it would also enable the DMK to play politics with Congress that has grown on to become more asserting in the absence of other heavyweight parties in the state alliance.

Macca set for White House stint?

London, May 21 (ANI): Sir Paul McCartney has hinted in an online video conference that he”s getting ready for a trip to the White House.

During a web chat for 30 minutes with his fans on Thursday, the former Beatle talked about the upcoming Wings remasters and answered his followers’ questions.

What really left his fans wondering was a vague comment though.

“There”s been some rumours and I think we can give you a clue. Think White House. Think playing… If there is an announcement mentioning the White House, remember where you heard it first,” The Daily Express quoted him as stating. (ANI)

Ronan Keating ‘accused of cheating by wife’

London, May 21 (ANI): Boyzone star Ronan Keating’s marriage is said to be on the rocks – his wife Yvonne has reportedly thrown him out of the house accusing him of cheating on her.

The former model, 36, ordered the singer to leave their Dublin home after a late-night showdown.

The news comes months after the tragic death of the Boyzone star’s close friend and band member, Stephen Gately.

“Ronan left home on Monday after Yvonne asked him to leave. There was lots of arguing again on Tuesday over everything from rumours about other women to his upcoming work in Australia and they decided to split,” The Sun quoted a band source as saying.

“Telling the kids was heartbreaking. They were both just devastated and never thought it would happen. Custody and things like that have not been talked about yet, it”s just too raw,” the source added. (ANI)

CA rubbishes ‘match fixing’ rumours behind Australia’s remarkable Sydney win against Pak

Melbourne, May 20 (ANI): Cricket Australia has denied reports that the Sydney Test against Pakistan was fixed, and said that Ricky Ponting-led side pulled off a remarkable victory through its own hard work.

The Pakistan team management believes that their players fixed this year’s Sydney Test as well as a Twenty20 match; an inquiry into the failed Australia tour revealed.

A Cricket Australia spokesman said he had heard nothing about match-fixing allegations. “Our view on that match has always been that we won it from behind through our own efforts,” The Australian quoted him, as saying.

Pakistan had a 206-run lead after the first innings and reached 1-50 in their last innings, chasing a victory total of 175, but Pakistan lost its last nine wickets for 89 runs and with it the match by 36 runs.

The performance of Pakistani wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal attracted most attention in the match. He dropped four catches in the third innings and missed a run out chance against Shane Watson when the opener was on 49. Watson went on to make 97.

More importantly, he dropped Mike Hussey three times as the middle-order batsman compiled 134. Hussey and tailender Peter Siddle went on to make a 123-run partnership and they were also aided by a defensive field setting.

Senior Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam and manager Aaqib Javed told a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) inquiry earlier this year they thought bookmakers might have been involved in the events that saw the game lost.

“I have reservations over the way he missed the run out. When I saw it I couldn’t believe it. How he could miss such a big run out? I can’t say 100 per cent that there is match-fixing, but I have my strong suspicions,” he said.

Intikhab said: “Kamran is a match-winner but every time we came close to a victory, he played a bad shot and got out. I was flabbergasted when Kamran missed the run out. I have serious doubts about him. I have heard stories about match-fixing.”

Aaqib also had suspicions about the performance of fast bowler Rana Naved-ul-Hasan in a Twenty20 match in Australia, saying, “We have heard things about him as well.” (ANI)

Pellegrini suspects the worst over his Real Madrid future

Manuel Pellegrini spoke as if he suspected his days were numbered as Real Madrid coach when he gave his pre-match news conference on Saturday ahead of the last game of the season at Malaga.

The nine-times European champions are one point behind La Liga leaders Barcelona, who host Real Valladolid at the same time on Sunday.

An exciting final-day showdown, however, may not be enough to save Pellegrini, who has clearly been affected by the steady stream of rumours in the media linking Inter Milan’s Jose Mourinho with the Real job for next season.

“All year, and especially in recent weeks, perhaps there hasn’t been a clear reply (from the club on my continuity),” Pellegrini told reporters.

“Amidst the uncertainty I have always had the support of the players.”

The Chilean said he felt there was no smoke without fire over the reports he would not be completing the second year of his contract, but defended his record over the last year.

“I don’t think Real speak behind the back of their coach, this isn’t their style,” he added. “But I am not so innocent to believe that all the rumours are simply speculation by journalists.

“If, for whatever reason, the project doesn’t continue the person who comes in will have a difficult job… he will have to win more than 100 points in the league to do better than me.

“I know failing to win a title isn’t good but I don’t think the final decision will change much whether we win the league or not.”

Real were embarrassed by third tier club Alcorcon in the King’s Cup and dumped out of the Champions League by Olympique Lyon at the last 16 stage in March.

In the league they have fought a neck-and-neck battle with Barcelona that has seen La Liga milestones smashed by both sides.

The previous points record for a season of 92, set by Real in 1997 when there were 22 teams in the top division, has been passed by both clubs and could reach 99 on Sunday if Barca beat Valladolid.

Pellegrini’s future is unlikely to be known immediately, but a local media frenzy is expected when Mourinho leads Inter Milan to the Bernabeu for the Champions League final against Bayern Munich on May 22.

Ex-M&S supermodel Noemie Lenoir in ‘suicide bid’

London, May 13 (ANI): Former Marks & Spencer supermodel Noemie Lenoir was found unconscious in the woods outside her former flame/soccer star Claude Makelele’s home in La Celle-Saint-Cloud, near Paris, after allegedly trying to commit suicide.

The beauty, depressed over her current boyfriend Carl Hirschmann being linked to a sex blackmail plot, had taken a cocktail of drink and drugs.

She reportedly called an ambulance but cancelled it minutes later.

“She was in a state of great distress and very ill,” the Sun quoted a source close to her, as saying.

The insider added: “She had clearly attempted to harm herself and had fallen unconscious. She was rushed to hospital and treated for the effects of poisoning. It seems she tried to commit suicide as a cry for help. She””s now recovering.”

A police source said: “She had consumed a significant quantity of drugs and alcohol. The reasons behind her actions are currently not clear.”

Lenoir’s Swiss lover Hirschmann has been accused of filming models performing sex acts, then threatening to publish the tapes on the internet.

A pal said: “Noemie is spending all of her spare time going to see him in Zurich. Knowing that he””s involved in such a serious case is tearing her apart.

“It””s a living hell and often Noemie doesn””t know which way to turn. The truth is that she is besotted with him.

“Many of the allegations are coming from beautiful young women just like her. It””s almost too much to bear.”

Lenoir’s career, seemingly, hasn’t been rolling after M&S cancelled her contract 12 months ago.

However, M&S spokesman said: “We””re very sorry to hear about this and wish Noemie a very speedy recovery. Our thoughts are with her and her family.”

Lenoir has a five -year-old son, Kelyan, with Makelele. She parted ways with the midfielder after rumours of his cheating surfaced. But they still maintain a cordial relationship. (ANI)

Joaquin Phoenix docu ‘packed with scenes of sex, drugs and nudity’

London, May 12 (ANI): Casey Affleck”s documentary film on Joaquin Phoenix could shock fans as it narrates the tale of the actor”s bid to become a rap star, packed with controversial scenes of sex, drugs and nudity.

The ‘Walk The Line’ star announced plans to quit acting last year (09) and concentrate on making music.

He grew a straggly beard and waded through a string of bizarre public appearances, which led many to believe his career-change was little more than a practical joke.

Then, Phoenix”s brother-in-law Affleck announced he would be filming his friend”s burgeoning hip-hop career for a documentary.

This further fuelled rumours of an elaborate hoax – even though the Oscar-nominated actor insisted he was serious about becoming a rapper.

Affleck has now completed his film, titled ‘I”m Still Here: The Lost Year of Joaquin Phoenix’, and has previewed the footage in a bid to find a distributor.

Reports indicate that the tell-all tale features shocking scenes of the star apparently snorting cocaine, ordering call girls and having oral sex with a publicist – fuelling gossip the film is in fact a ”mockumentary”.

But Affleck is adamant the footage is real.

“I wanted to explore what I thought would be an interesting period in his life. He said he didn”t want to act anymore, he wanted to try doing music, and that, right there, says something”s going to happen…” the Daily Star quoted him as telling America”s ABC News.

“I had no idea what exactly was going to happen and all that would unfold and every day I spent with him on this journey. It ended up being more and more fascinating, more and more things happened that were both in the public spectacle and a very private internal implosion that I got to witness. It made for this unbelievable, one-of-a-kind movie. You”ll find out what was happening in his life in that period – what was going on before he went on (sic), what was going on afterwards,” he added. LiLo denies she”s addicted to drink and drugs

London, May 10 (ANI): Lindsay Lohan has hit back at rumours that she”s addicted to drink and drugs.

In a TV interview, the Mean Girls star sat alongside her mum Dina to set the record straight about the recent rumours.

The actress’ estranged father Michael recently claimed that his daughter was hooked on prescription drugs.

However, Lindsay has slammed his claims, insisting she has turned her life around, reports the Sun.

She told Entertainment Tonight: “I””m OK… when did I stop being OK?

“I am fine. I am happy and I am working. And I””m good.

“I””m surrounded by great friends now. You know, I have weeded out a lot of people in my life.

“I don””t (have substance abuse problems). I work. And if I go out with my friends, I””m 23, and I””m allowed to do that. I don””t go out when I””m working,” she added.

She has also blamed false claims about her lifestyle for lack of work.

“It distracts from me getting jobs. That””s when it hurts the most – especially when it””s not true,” she said. (ANI)

Greg Norman”s ex-wives ‘hurt over his new relationship’

Melbourne, May 10 (ANI): Golf legend Greg Norman”s ex-wives Chris Evert and Laura Andrassy are disappointed with the disclosure that the sports star is in a relationship with Kirsten Kutner.

Rumours of Norman’s extra-marital affair with Kutner had sparked in 1995, while he was married to Andrassy.

However, he claimed that she was just a friend, with whom he grew close very recently.

Andrassy suggested it was hard to believe. Seemingly, a strict clause in her multi-million dollar divorce settlement with Norman stopped her from revealing much.

“It”s difficult for my children. They”ve been through enough and I really want to keep them from dealing with anything to do with their father,” the Herald Sun quoted Andrassy as telling Woman”s Day magazine.

She added: “There is a lot to the story. It does have something to do with me, but it doesn”t have anything to do with me anymore… I”ve moved on.”

Also, Norman’s another ex-wife, Evert is reportedly “shocked and deeply hurt”.

She said: “I am in a good place raising my sons. My boys are so, so happy to have me back. This is where I want to be.” (ANI)

Kristen Stewart refuses to ”cheapen” relationships with dating chat

London, May 7 (ANI): Twilight actress Kristen Stewart has said that speaking about her relationship with co-star Robert Pattinson would “cheapen” it.

Stewart insists naming her lovers would “cheapen” her relationships, reports the dailyexpress.co.uk.

“I would never cheapen my relationships by talking about them. People say, ‘Just say who you’re dating.

“Then people will stop being so ravenous about it.’ It’s like, ‘No they won’t!’ They’ll ask for specifics,” she told America’s Elle magazine.

For a long time now, the stunner has been dogged by rumours that she is secretly romancing Pattinson, forcing the pair to continually deny reports they are together. (ANI)

“But everyone is entitled to their opinion,” he added. (ANI)

Kaneria to join Essex on May 6 leaving match-fixing reports behind

Karachi, May 3 (ANI): Putting the alleged spot fixing rumours behind, Pakistani leg spinner Danish Kaneria said that he is due to join up once again with English County team Essex.

The UK Police was investigating Kaneria, who plays for English county team Essex, for his involvement in a cricket betting scandal.

He is reportedly under police investigation over a NatWest Pro40 match between Essex and Durham at the Riverside on September 5, 2009.

“Yes I’ll be back at Essex later next week, probably 6th May. I’m really looking forward to it, especially after our promotion to Division 1 of the County Championship,” Kaneria said.

“It will be a good challenge for myself and my Essex colleagues to test ourselves in the top tier of English County cricket,” Pakpassion.net quoted him, as saying.

Speaking about the role of leg spinners at the Twenty20 World Cup, Kaneria said that leg spinners will be pivotal and crucial to any team’s chances, especially given the nature of the wickets in the Caribbean. (ANI)

Thaksin denies rumors of death due to cancer

Bangkok, Apr 26 (ANI): Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who has been living in self-exile, has denied rumors circulating on Internet that he is dead.

Rumours about Thaksin’s death have been sweeping the Internet in recent days, after it became clear that the former premier was suffering from terminal stage cancer.

One version said he had died during a chemotherapy session on Friday, The Bangkok Post reports.

Thaksin’s eldest son, Panthongtae, earlier denied on his Twitter page that that his father had died, but that failed to persuade some people.

“I’m sorry [for those who invent the rumors], but I’m fine. I’m not sick. No doctors have treated me for anything,” Thaksin said in his own Twitter page around 3 a.m. on Sunday.

He said he had rarely addressed the Red Shirt rally recently because he wanted to distance himself from the Red Shirt movement, to make it clear that the demonstration was purely for democracy and not for him.

Thaksin lashed out at the Abhisit Vejjajiva-led government for turning down the red-shirted United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) demand that he dissolve the House in 30 days.

“The UDD leaders should be applauded for agreeing to take one step back. However, it was disappointing that the government rejected it,” Thaksin said.

On April 10, the red shirt demonstrators and security forces clashed in Bangkok. Theksin had left Dubai the same day, and had since travelled to Saudi Arabia, Brunei, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and Europe. (ANI)
