Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa lag behind in providing toilet facilities in rural households

New Delhi, July 3 (ANI): Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa figure among the list of states lagging behind when it comes to providing the toilet facilities in rural households.

“The percentage of rural households without toilet facilities in Bihar stands at 72.58 percent while in Jharkhand 69.08 percent households lack the basic sanitation. In Orissa 64.79 percent rural households are without the toilet facilities,” said Union Minister Of Rural Development C.P.Joshi in reply to a question in Lok Sabha today.

In sharp contrast Sikkim is the only state in the country, which has achieved a unique distinction of having achieved Universal Sanitation with no backlogs while Kerala and Tripura are on the way to achieve the similar feat.

The findings appear in the backdrop of a nationwide Total Sanitation Campaign . The campaign was launched by the Central Government in 1977 to provide toilet facility in each and every household in the rural areas of the country.

Based on the proposals received, Total Sanitation Campaign projects (to be implemented over a period of 4-5 years) have been approved for 593 rural districts in the country since the inception of TSC.

The major components of the TSC include information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities, incentive of Rs. 1500 from Government of India and Rs. 700 from State Government per toilet for BPL households to construct toilets, provision of toilets in schools and Anganwadis, provision of community toilets, rural sanitary marts, etc. and assistance for village solid and liquid waste management.

Since it is a demand – driven program, funds are released as per eligibility criteria based on utilization of funds by the districts. (ANI)

Medical tourism in Kashmir has great potential, say doctors

Srinagar, May 18(ANI): Doctors in Jammu and Kashmir have said that the state possesses a huge potential for medical tourism because of the cheap cost and availability of experienced doctors.

Leading doctors of Kashmir valley have got together in Srinagar, to attend the inaugural function of 55th Annual Conference of Indian Association of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons (IACTS) at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convocation Centre (SKICC).

Senior cardiologists of Kashmir revealed that the cardiac surgery in Kashmir costs 80 per cent less than New Delhi, 95 per cent less than Europe and 98.5 per cent less than its cost in the United States.

The doctors explained that keeping the cost effectiveness in mind and the availability of modern expertise and resource, the state had a great potential to tap the opportunity and develop as a medical tourism hub.

Speaking on the occasion was Jammu and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra.

Addressing the guests, he emphasized the need for developing medical tourism, as it would be highly beneficial for the state monetarily and otherwise.

“Meckinze study which said that in another two to three years by 2012, if the rate of medical tourism proceeds the present level of increase, then we would be earning anything between 2 billion dollars to 2.5 billion dollars every year,” said Vohra.

Doctors said other areas that could be promoted for medical tourism in the State were neurology, plastic surgery, hematology, rheumatology and other related areas in cardiology like angiography and angioplasty.

Doctors are hoping that the conference would help in giving an impetus to medical tourism that would help the State and bring the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) on the medical map of the world.

“In government institutions like us, the SKIMS, the cost effectiveness is very high. A person (poor) cannot go to a private hospital, so they can come to government hospitals. Thus, we have a lot of avenues for medical tourism.

Those operations that costs Rs 30 lakhs in America, Rs 20 lakh in Europe and Rs 3-5 lakhs in a private hospital in New Delhi, the same operation can be done here in Rs 50 thousand to Rs 1 lakh,” said Dr. AG Ahangar, head of the department, Cardio Vascular and Thoracic Surgery at the SKIMS.

More than 150 papers regarding cardiovascular and thoracic surgery will be read during the three-day conference.

Experts believe that the scenic beauty and the pollution free atmosphere in Kashmir valley can be a positive factor for medical tourism.

Doctors from Spain have also come to attend the conference, which will conclude today. By Bilal Butt (ANI)

Russia to test launch ballistic missile

Moscow, April 10 (RIA Novosti) Russia will test launch later Friday a Topol intercontinental ballistic missile from the Plesetsk space centre in northern Russia, a spokesman for the Strategic Missile Forces (SMF) said.

The missile was in active service from 1987 until 2007, and deployed with the 54th Strategic Missile Division near the town of Teikovo, about 240 km northeast of Moscow.

‘The goal of the upcoming launch is to confirm the reliability of the technical characteristics (of Topol missiles) during an extended service period,’ Alexander Vovk said.

The RS-12M Topol, also referred to as SS-25, is a single-warhead intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) approximately the same size and shape as the US Minuteman ICBM. The first Topol missiles were put into service in 1985.

The missile has a maximum range of 10,000 km and can carry a 550-kiloton nuclear warhead.

Although the service life of the SS-25 was extended to 21 years after a series of successful test launches last year, the missile will be progressively retired over the next decade and be replaced by mobile Topol-M (SS-27 Stalin) missile systems.

Russia’s SMF has a total of 541 ICBMs, including 306 Topol missiles and 59 Topol-M missiles.

Druk Air to start flights from Bagdogra to Bangkok

GANGTOK: Royal Bhutan airline Druk Air, popular known as the wings of Dragon, is going to launch twice-a-weekly service from Bagdogra to Bangkok.

According to the new schedule, flights will take off from Bagdogra on Tuesday and Saturday and return on Wednesday and Sunday, charging Rs 6,000 one way to Bangkok or Rs 10,000 both ways, excluding Rs 250 and other service charge.

The charge for Bagdogra to Paro, Bhutan, would be Rs 2,000 plus Rs 250. Passengers from Bagdogra will get enhanced connectivity from Bangkok to several destinations across North America, Europe, Asia and West Asia. The 114 passengers will fly by A319 Air Boeing with enough cargo space.

According to CEO Tandin Jamso, Druk Air, which celebrated silver jubilee last year has decided to buy one more Boeing aircraft and one at least will be taken on lease. Though they are running seven linkages with India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Thailand, attempts are on to expand Druk Air services to Hong Kong, Singapore and many other places like Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai.

Tourism secretary SBS Bhadauria said the Sikkim airport will be commissioned by July 2011. Lokendra Rasaily, president of the Sikkim Adventure Tourism Association, reminded that after repeated requests by the Sikkim government, GOI has taken the initiative to convert Bagdogra into an international airport with all facilities. That will not only increase tourist traffic flow, but also pave the way for organic products and floriculture items to reach the international market.

DoCoMo gets nod to acquire Tata Teleservices’ stake

New Delhi, (IANS) India’s cabinet was in an overdrive Monday clearing 60 agenda items in three hours, including Japan’s NTT DoCoMo Inc’s proposal to acquire 20.25 percent stake in Tata Teleservices.

It took Home Minister P. Chidambaram a little under an hour to brief reporters on the decisions taken.

The cabinet’s decision would pave the way for the Japanese firm to buy 384,241,919 equity shares in Tata Teleservices for Rs.9.45 billion (Rs.949 crore).

The cabinet has also showed green light to a proposal by National Aviation Co. of India Ltd (NACIL) to set up a joint venture with Singapore Air Terminal Services (SATS) for undertaking ground handling and cargo handling activities.

NACIL and SATS would hold 50:50 equity ratio in the new entity.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee presided over cabinet meeting in the absence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is recuperating from a heart bypass surgery.

This is the first time in recent history that the cabinet has cleared so many items at a single sitting.

Govt may cut diesel prices further by Rs 2

In probably the last pre-poll bonanza, the government may cut diesel price by Rs 2 a litre in a “day-or-two” but there would be no reduction in petrol prices.

Government wants to announce the price reduction, on top of the Rs 4 a litre cut in two installments since December, before General Elections are announced, an official said.

“The Cabinet may meet in a day-or-two to decide on the reduction,” he said. “Most likely, the Cabinet may meet tomorrow.”

A reduction in diesel price would pull down inflation and make goods transportation, especially fruits and vegetables, cheaper.

However, there would no reduction in petrol rates, which in two installments had already been slashed by Rs 10 a litre.

State-owned fuel retailers Indian Oil Corp, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum are selling petrol at almost break-even point while they make Rs 3.26 a litre profit on diesel sales.

“There is a scope for reduction in diesel rates only,” the official said. On petrol, the margins are just Rs 0.08 per litre.

The three firms are currently making Rs 36 crore per day profit on diesel sales, enough to negate the Rs 24 crore per day loss on kerosene and Rs 9 crore on domestic LPG.

Kerosene is being sold at a loss of Rs 11.70 per litre and LPG at Rs 77.51 per 14.2-kg cylinder.

Gold touches new peak at Rs 15,200

Gold touches new peak at Rs 15,200 Gold touched new heights at Rs 15,200 per 10 gram in the morning trading in Delhi, in line with significant rise in gold prices in the international market. Another reason for high price in India was decline in Indian currency and stock market.

Stockists kept on buying the precious metal, considering it as the safest investment mode amid tight financial conditions under the impact of global slowdown. Asian investors have shown high interest in the metal in order to preserve their wealth in the wake of global slowdown, fearing grimmer situation ahead.

Gold touched 960.20 dollars an ounce, the highest since July 22, in the foreign market according to Asian Pacific MSCI index. Experts believe that this trend would continue for some time due to uncertainty in stock market and deepening of global financial crisis besides large scale buying by retailers for the current marriage season.

The condition was not different for gold futures which touched Rs 15,050 per 10 gram in early deals. MCX Gold August contract was traded with increase of 2.35 percent while COMEX Gold touched a new level at $948.80 per ounce in the early Asian trades.

12.5 percent growth projected for media industry

12.5 percent growth projected for media industry A joint study by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and KPMG estimated that the media and entertainment industry will grow at 12.5 percent over the next five years to cross the Rs 1,00,000-crore mark by 2013. The report showed that it grew 15 percent annually since 2006 into an $11.68-billion industry in
2008.

The Study says: “In many ways, 2008 was a testing time for the industry. With the global economic slowdown affecting advertising spends, sectors like TV, print, radio and outdoor that depend on advertising revenues were affected.”

Study values the Indian film industry at Rs 109.3 billion and projects its growth at 9.1 percent till 2013. The radio business is projected to grow at 14.2 percent despite its present smaller size at Rs 8.4 billion. Revenues from television are projected to grow to Rs 47,300 crore by the year 2013. The print media is expected to grow to Rs 26,600 crore by 2013.

He said that government has yet to finalize the base price, revenue from which is projected of Rs 20,000 crore as compared to earlier revenue estimates of Rs 30,000-Rs
40,000 crore by the Telecommunication Ministry.

Mr. Raja further said, “There are many things which have led to a lower base price. How many slots will be given in the spectrum auction has still not been decided.”

He hoped that people of Tamil Nadu would enjoy 3G services, to be started by the state-run telephone operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), before the end of February.
