Gambhir sweats it out

Amongst a bunch of kits strewn around at the Bharat Nagar Sports Complex, a blue tag with a World T20 logo, mentioning ‘Member Indian team’, was hanging out distinctly from the black kitbag. A closer look showed ‘Gambhir’ engraved on it. Team India, somehow, is still preoccupied with that tournament. A few of the players have just finished scribbling replies to a show cause notice following a pub brawl, while others are recovering from the trauma of a failed campaign.

Gautam Gambhir didn’t unpack his kit bag upon returning home from the West Indies. On Tuesday, he picked up that very bag and headed for a game ? one which will help him prepare for the Asia Cup and the Sri Lanka series. The met man marked his reading as 45.2 degrees for Wednesday, but that didn’t alter the Indian opener’s plan of venturing into the Delhi summer circuit.

“You want to know what am I doing here in this heat? I am here to get some good practice to play 50-over cricket to prepare myself for the Asia Cup,” said Gambhir, who turned up for employers ONGC in a quarter-final game of the Laxman Dass Chabbra cricket tournament against Rohtak Road Gymkhana. “Let the others rest. I am ok. Ten days are enough for me. I want to get a few one-day matches under my belt,” he added.

Gambhir has charted his summer circuit plan well in advance. The left-hander will be in action again in the semi-final of the tournament on Friday, and at the Lala Raghubir tournament on Saturday. Gambhir will spotted more often in the coming two weeks playing the summer circuit in the Capital and will be hitting the nets on non-match days.

Gambhir made 32 in his side’s victory on a wicket that assisted spinners. He began with a square cut off the backfoot, used his footwork admirably to play some delectable over-the-cover-region shots. Gambhir lost his wicket trying to heave leg-spinner Abhishek Sharma over deep mid-wicket but was caught inside the rope.

Earlier, Sharma scored a whirlwind 58 off 32 deliveries to take RR Gymkhana to a competitive total after put into bat on a wicket that was still damp despite an hour’s delay. Opener Gaurav Goel withstood an early probe with the new ball while ONGC skipper Amit Bhandari split open the middle order with a heavy dose of reverse swing that fetched him two wickets. Batting with a runner, Sharma hit clean to make the most of batting powerplay opted for in the last three overs of the 35-over game.

Though Gambhir was the star attraction, it was Radhey Shyam Gupta and Saleem Ansari with half-centuries to their credit, who guided their team home with six wickets to spare. Gupta scored an unbeaten 58 while Ansari was unbeaten on 56 as ONGC chased down 204.

Ansari was handed the man of the match, while Gambhir gifted a brand new bat to the other star of the afternoon.

At the end of it all, the heat did get to Gambhir. But it wasn’t on the field that Gambhir started to fret about the summer sun. Rather, the interiors of his car was so hot that the India opener had to wait a while before driving home.

Brief scores: RR Gymkhana 204 for 7 in 35 overs (Abhishek Sharma not out 58, Gaurav Goel 46, Praveen Gupta 2/24, Amit Bhandari 2/47 ); ONGC 208 for 4 in 32.4 overs (Radhey Shyam Gupta not out 58, Saleem Ansari not out 56, Sandeep Sharma 48, Gautam Gambhir 32, Abhishek Sharma 2/31)

Rusty Pak ‘terribly out of order’ in ICC T20 WC : Akram

Lahore, May 8 (ANI): Following the two consecutive losses against Australia and England in the ICC World T20 Championship, defending champions Pakistan are looking ‘terribly out of order’, former captain Wasim Akram has said.

In his column on ESPN, Akram pointed out that Pakistan has not played any competitive cricket in the recent past, which was evident from their performances in the two games against Australia and England.

Pakistan was comprehensively beaten by Australia by 34 runs in the last of their group matches, while suffering another humiliating six-wicket defeat at the hands of England in the first match of the Super Eight Stage of the tournament on Thursday.

Akram observed that the Pakistan team management has failed to rope in the best set of players in the tournament so far.

“They have not yet been able to decide on their best-choice XI. Players have not played competitive cricket in last two months or so. No wonder why they have been on pins and needles in the tournament so far,” he said.

Akram, one of the finest fast bowlers of his time, underlined that Pakistan’s batsmen would have to improve their application if the team has to move further in the tournament.

“Batting has not really come off for the Pakistanis. If Kamran Akmal does not fire at the top, the team looks in disarray. Misbah-ul-Haq is not looking the player he was at the inaugural edition three years ago in South Africa. The defending champions’ batting needs immediate address,” he said. (ANI)

England indulges in `range’ hitting ahead of match with Windies

Guyana (West Indies), May 3 (ANI): The Paul Collingwood-led England team is indulging in range hitting as part of its practice drill ahead of the World Twenty20 clash with the West Indies.

England’s players have prepared for the Twenty20 big-hitting bonanza with a trip to the range — the cricket range and not the golf range.

It involves repeatedly trying to whack the ball into the stands, reports The Sun.

It quoted Collingwood, as saying: “The thing that helps with sixes is range hitting. These are new words in cricket but we did it in the IPL and also back in the Champions Trophy in South Africa last year. It”s exactly the same as golf range hitting. We go out in the middle of the stadium, someone throws the balls and we hit them into the stand. The confidence you get from knowing you can clear the rope is huge.”

Collingwood led England in their two previous assaults on the World Twenty20 but this time he insists they can go all the way. (ANI)

Thai police, government left embarrassed after fialed raid on Red Shirts’ hotel

Bangkok, Apr.16 (ANI): Thailand’s police and government were left with red faces this morning when a commando raid to arrest a group of hard-core red-shirt leaders staying at a Bangkok hotel failed miserably.

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban went on the television about 10 a.m. to announce the raid on the SC Park Hotel – where red-shirt protest leaders Arisman Pongruengrong, Suporn Atthawong alias Isan Rambo, Pramual Chuklom alias Jiew Dokchik and Payap Pankate, have been hiding out.

These leaders are among the 24 wanted on arrest warrants in connection with the violent protests, the Bangkok Post reported.

Unfortunately, the police bungled the raid. The wanted men apparently got wind of the operation and alerted their supporters, who rushed to the hotel. Red-shirt guards reportedly opened fire at the police as they resisted arrest.

Arisman was seen on TV making an ungainly escape, sliding down a rope from a room on the third floor of the hotel to a truck parked beneath and into the waiting arms of red-shirt supporters, who whisked him away.

The other four leaders also made good their escape, escorted away by protesters as police stood idly by, unable to take any action. (ANI)

Body-piercing ritual at Kochi Temple

Kochi, Mar. 31 (ANI): Devotees at Kerala’s Aaryyankavu Bhagwathi Temple have devised a new way of performing the banned ancient Thookkam, or body-piercing ritual.

In the original Thookam ritual, the back of the person willing to perform the ritual is pierced with sharp hooks and lifted up to a height of over 30 feet on a scaffold, before the bleeding victim is brought down and hooks taken out.

However, the new method doesn’t require the devotee to be hung or lifted.

“After a court put a ban on the ancient ritual of multiple body-piercing and hanging from rope, now only single piercing is done in the body and the person just stands still and does not hang. The devotees also fast for 41 days,” said Shiv Raman, a temple committee member.

In 2004 – following a widespread protest by social activists and even Hindu priests – the practice was banned by a court.

The legend behind the ritual goes back to the ancient days. Legend has it that even after slaying the demon Darika, the Goddess Kali remained bloodthirsty.

Hindu god Lord Vishnu then sent his mount, the giant bird Garuda, to Kali. Garuda gave the goddess some drops of blood, which pacified her thirst.

The ritual is performed based on this belief. (ANI)

Britain’s beaches ‘drowning in plastic’

London, Mar 26(ANI): The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) has called for an urgent marine action plan in Britain after they found piles of plastic rubbish along beaches across the country during the latest annual survey of beach litter.

According to the MCS, thousands of volunteers picked up 2,742 bags of litter from 400 beaches during a survey done on one weekend last year.

The list of most commonly picked up items from beaches was topped by small and larger pieces of plastic, which together accounted for a fifth of the items gathered.

The plastic items found included thousands of drinks bottles, carrier bags, wrappers, rope, caps, cutlery, trays, straws and cups.

Rachel Bailey, MCS litter projects officer, said plastic was a particular problem for wildlife, as seals get entangled in fishing nets and leatherback turtles swallowed plastic.

“Our seas and beaches are becoming overwhelmed with plastic litter, which not only looks horrible, but kills and injures many of our fantastic marine animals,” The Telegraph quoted Bailey, as saying.

“Over 260 species of marine wildlife become entangled in litter or mistake it for food,” she added. (ANI)

Drunken nunchaku attack ends in jail

A southern Tasmanian man who split open another man’s scalp with a home-made nunchaku has been sent to jail.

Andrew Leigh Webb pleaded guilty to assault and wounding at New Norfolk last July.

The Supreme Court in Hobart heard the 24-year-old lived in a block of units for disadvantaged people.

On the night of the crime, Webb’s unit was trashed and he believed the complainant was involved.

He dragged the complainant from a nearby unit and kicked him several times, before leaving and returning with a home-made nunchaku made from what appeared to be chair legs tied together with rope.

He hit his victim’s shin and head with the weapon, causing a six centimetre head wound that required staples and stitches.

The court heard Webb was drunk when he committed the attack.

Justice Peter Evans sentenced him to six months in jail.

A woman who was bushwalking has fallen down a disused mine shaft in the Adelaide hills.

Gillian Broadbent, 44, tripped and fell several metres down a hole at the old Jupiter Creek diggings near Echunga.

“I dropped my keys when I was looking at a mine,” she said afterwards.

“I went in through the fence to get them and the bank gave way.

“I slipped in and banged myself a bit.”

After her fall, Ms Broadbent, who is a police officer, used her mobile phone to call a friend and raise the alarm.

When a rescue crew arrived, it threw a rope down to the woman and she managed to climb out with only minor injuries.

West Bengal Government scraps Rajarhat IT park project

Kolkata, Sep.7 (ANI): The West Bengal government on Monday scrapped plans for an IT-related township in the Rajarhat area near Salt Lake City in the wake of a land scam involving land sharks and government officials.

The State Government had revealed last month that it had acquired land for the Infosys and Wipro complexes.

The state Cabinet went far beyond the waiving aside of the urban land ceiling to enable promoters procure the rest of the land. The government also promised to facilitate the process of land conversion (from agricultural to non-agricultural). Clause 5.51 under Section D of the MoU clearly states that Webel shall enable the joint venture company to get all clearance and “applicable permits” under the law, including “conversion of land”.

The government stayed away from procuring land on its own. Instead, it gave the JVC a long rope and agreed on getting land from this company on lease, leaving 600 acres to the private partners for commercial use. Not only that, the private promoters set the terms for Webel’s activities on the leasehold land. Clause 4.6 of the MoU states: “With a view to meet the requirement of small IT companies for built-up space, if Webel intends to develop IT parks, the Joint Venture partner Vedic Diamond will be given the first right of refusal to develop such facilities.”

Oz cops book dog for illegal parking!

Melbourne, Sep 2 (ANI): Traffic wardens of the Darwin City Council recently booked a dog for illegal parking.

The blue heeler was roped to a fence outside Rapid Creek Market when two traffic wardens taped the ticket to the dog’s lead.

The Courier Mail quoted witness Ray McEvoy as saying: “I watched an elderly lady and her very faithful blue heeler roll up at the market.

“The lady tied the dog to the fence and gave him a bowl full of water.

“And off she went into the markets.

“Then two traffic inspectors came along. They had a bit of a talk and, to my amazement, wrote out a warning infringement notice for the dog and taped it to his lead rope.”

McEvoy said the dog was standing peacefully tied to fence wall, far from the shops.

“It was on a path rarely used…And the owner made sure the dog was in the shade…. It wasn’t in distress at all. In fact, it was the most placid blue heeler I’ve seen in my life,” he added.

The dog owner was last spotted looking for the two cops.

However Council spokesman Grant Fenton defended the move and said a dog was deemed to be “at large” if it’s owner was not there.

“You can’t tie up a dog and leave it,” he added. (ANI)

How Java’s seafarers built their boats in the 6th and 7th centuries

Jakarta, July 11 (ANI): The recent discovery of an ancient boat in Indonesia has shed light on how Java’s seafarers in the 6th and 7th centuries built their boats.

According to a report in The Jakarta Post, the ancient boat, measuring 15.6 meters long and 4 meters wide, was found in Punjulharjo village, Rembang district, in Rembang regency.

A team from the Yogyakarta Archaeology Center made a detailed study of the site, about 200 meters inland from the Java Sea coastline, from June 17 to 26 this year.

The boat, approximately 1,200 years old, was found buried near the Central Java northern coastline, with its bow lying to the west and its stern in the east.

The ancient boat is the most complete ever found in Indonesia, according to the chairman of the Yogyakarta archaeology team, Novida Abbas.

“So far, we have only got wooden planks and other separate pieces. The discovery in Rembang is 50 percent intact,” Novida said. “We can see the actual shape of the boat and its construction technology,” he added.

Novida estimates that the boat could hold 30 people.

Its skeleton remains complete, including its sides, bottom, curved ribs (to support the sides), stringers (to fasten the ribs) and wooden pegs, as well as palm-fiber ropes to fasten the ribs to knobs on the inside of the sides. There are also rattan and bamboo items.

According to Priyatno Hadi, a team member and archaeology graduate from Yogyakarta’s Gadjah Mada University, the main body of the boat was unbroken.

The hull was built using a very simple method that did not require any metal components.

“Planks were first arranged to form an arc and then the curved wooden ribs were placed in parallel rows from the stern to the bow. Thereafter, they were fastened and strengthened with wooden pegs,” said Hadi, showing the thumb-sized pegs.

Twelve of the boat’s 17 ribs are still joined to its flanks, with their palm-fiber ropes still partly tied in their knots.

Unusually, there are also L-shaped planks in the stern – with those in the bow probably having been lost – for reinforcement due to the palm-fiber rope holes.

Missing are the upper parts of the boat and some parts of the bow, according to Novida.

“The entire boat may have been larger than what has been found today. Its age of 12 centuries and its almost complete state provide good material for more comprehensive research,” he said.

“So, we will finally have an idea of what Indonesia’s ancient boats looked like without having to speculate much. This finding gives us a good idea,” he added. (ANI)
