Uttarakhand villagers marooned for over two years

Chai (Uttarakhand), Aug 21 (ANI): Residents of Chai village in Uttarakhand are still struggling to cope up with the predicament, which they encountered nearly two years ago when water from a tunnel of a powerhouse project gushed into their homes.

It was on October 25, 2007 that a massive leakage in the tunnel of the 400 MW powerhouse project constructed by the Jaiprakash Power Ventures Limited, a subsidiary of Jaypee Group of Industries resulted in the entire Chai village being inundated.

Only couple of families out of 25 were compensated.

With no roof over their heads and facing Herculean task to travel to the nearby villages or other places for their work, these families have reached the limit of their patience.

“When the tunnel built by JP Company (Jaiprakash Power Ventures Limited) poured out two years ago, our complete village was wiped out. Every day we are living under the fear of losing our lives. All our homes have been destroyed. We face a lot of problems while commuting from one place to another, as there are no roads,” said Yashoda Devi, a villager.

She also complained that many families are living in shacks and tents since the government has not rehabilitated them even after two years.

Despite repeated appeals, the government has rehabilitated just seven to eight families out of the 25 gravely affected households.

So much so, relief if any seems to have become a mirage for these families.

“We took our problem to the Chief Minister and the District Magistrate and every authority concerned, but so far they have provided houses to just seven to eight families. Those families who were severely affected by the leakage were promised a compensation of 365,000 rupees.

But the villagers were not in favour of the compensation but wished to move to some safer place,” said Pratap Lal, former Pradhan (headman) of Chai village.

Reacting to all the plight of the villagers, the government of Uttarakhand has contended that the grievances of the affected villagers are being looked into and that the District Magistrate is being instructed to address the problems of Chai village.

“This problem is now under consideration. We will be referring the matter to the District Magistrate and strict instructions will be issued to him. The problem is very grave in the village ever since the tunnel had leaked. After that commuting has been very dangerous for the villagers.

The District Magistrate will be looking into the matter at the earliest,” asserted Khajan Das, Minister of Disaster Management, Uttarakhand. (ANI)

Mitchell Johnson’s mum declares war on his ‘bitchy’ WAG!

Melbourne, Jul 8 (ANI): Aussie cricketer Mitchell Johnson’s mum Vikki Harber has lashed out at Cricket Australia for turning its back on parents in favour of flying over “bitchy” girlfriends to the games.

Harber, 45, also said that her once close relationship with her son has deteriorated ever since he started going out with his karate champ girlfriend Jessica Bratich.

“I get a text on Mother’s Day and a text on my birthday,” the Herald Sun quoted her as saying.

“The last time I actually spoke to him was when the beach cricket was here (and) Dennis Lillee told him he had to ring his mother, so Mitchell rang me that day.

“It has been like this since Jess came on the scene.

“Up until he met Jessica we were very close . . . but he hasn’t spent a night under my roof since he met Jessica,” she said.

Harber said that Cricket Australia had never offered her any opportunity to see her son play outside Brisbane.

“For the wives and the children I think it is great that they support them and send them over there, but who are these girlfriends? They are just girlfriends,” she said from Coolangatta.

“Mitch met Jess and since then she has flown off to South Africa, to England and the Bahamas. She gets all these trips, she gets flown there, accommodation, food and all of that,” she stated.

Johnson’s manager Sam Halvosen said that the bowler was aware of his mother’s comments, but did not want to discuss them.

And Kevin Johnson as backed his son, saying that partners on tour were “a good thing”.

“Like Jess said, they’re away for six months of the year so it’s a bit hard for them to be away from each other that whole time,” he added.

Cricket sources said that it was for the players to decide whom to invite on tour. (ANI)

Styrofoam addition makes roofs eco-friendly

Washington, July 5 (ANI): Soon, homeowners seeking energy efficiency and savings could be making an environmentally friendly addition to their roofs, with a Styrofoam piece specifically designed for air ventilation covered with foil that can be installed on top of a standard shingle roof.

Billy Ellis Roofing, a Fort Worth, Texas-based roofing company, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory are testing the new roof system called ‘Thermadeck insulation’.

Taking advantage of the simple science that heat rises, the Thermadeck insulation equipped with air gaps helps move hot air up and away from the roof in an effective, cost efficient way without compromising the quality of the roof. (ANI)

Wimbledon final tickets being sold for 8,500 pounds

London, July 3 (ANI): Tickets for the Wimbledon men’s final are being sold for 8,500 pounds each.ccording to The Sun, Wimbledon top brass have pledged to prosecute black market touts trying to cash in on Murray mania.

But well-heeled debenture holders who provide funds for Wimbledon can sell their tickets.

An All England Club spokesman said: “It is thanks to debenture holders that we can undertake projects like the Centre Court roof. In return, we think it only fair that these investors are allowed to trade their tickets if they want to.

“But I must point out that most debentures are bought by out-and-out tennis enthusiasts.”

Wimbledon themselves actively encourage the sale of debenture tickets by approving a website set up especially for the purpose of selling on the ‘white market’.

But ticket agencies get in through the back door by snapping up unwanted debenture holders’ seats so they can make booming profits from enthusiasts.

The All England Club issues debentures every five years to raise funds for capital expenditure.

The last batch in 2006 realized 46 million pounds and each single debenture cost 23,150 pounds. (ANI)

Pensioners’ coffee morning banned over safety fears

London, June 29 (ANI): A group of British pensioners have been barred from enjoying a coffee morning at a public library for health and safety reasons.

The seven members of the coffee morning for over 50s have met at Eye Library in Eye, near Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, every Tuesday for the last four years without incident.

However, the council has now banned the elderly group from holding meetings claiming that toddlers from a nearby nursery, who use the library at the same time, could be injured if hot coffee spilt on them.

They now arrange their coffee mornings at each other’s homes

Derek Taylor, one member of the coffee club, condemned the “laughable” move and claimed they would usually finish their drinks by the time the toddlers arrived for their half hour visit.

“It is just laughable really. It is health and safety gone through the roof,” the Telegraph quoted Taylor as saying.

“Nearly four years ago we set up a coffee morning at Eye Library after the librarian at the time came up with the idea, and since then about seven of us have been going there every Tuesday.

“About three weeks ago a toddlers group started coming up on the Tuesday as well, and then this week when we went, we were told that we would not be allowed any tea or coffee because of health and safety reasons because there is a risk we could spill hot tea on the children.

“However, we understand that is not the case at all, because we have always finished our drinks before the children even arrive, and that it is the case that the librarian doesn’t want to wash up extra cups.

“It is very disappointing, we all thoroughly enjoy the weekly meeting, it is a chance for us all to catch up and have a chat,” Taylor added.

A spokesman for Peterborough City Council, which runs the library, said: “Eye Library is a small library and there were concerns about hot drinks being served to the group when there were small children sitting very close by. However, we do not want to spoil anyone’s fun, and will be speaking to both groups to see if we can be more flexible about the timings so that the nursery group are not in the library at the time the coffee morning is meeting.” (ANI)

Wimbledon’s 80 million pounds rainproof roof used to counter blistering sun!

London, June 24 (ANI): Wimbledon’s 80 million pounds retractable roof built to protect the Centre Court from rain, was used for the first time to shield spectators from the blistering sun.

Some 15,000 Centre Court fans sweated it out in temperatures up to 92°F (33.4°C) as they waited to see British Andy Murray in action.

The roof was moved 5feet to put the Royal Box in the shade, cooling off guests including Prince Michael of Kent and rugby union bigwig Francis Baron. A canopy, which used to protect VIPs was removed when the new roof was built.

All England Club spokeswoman Sarah Hames said: “We’re very happy its first use went successfully. The roof was designed for rain and bad light but it’s proved to have more than one use.”

The heat peaked at 3 p.m., with fans trying to shelter under hats, newspapers and even sweaters, The Sun reports.

First-aiders said 90 people had been treated for heat-related conditions including dehydration.

Temperatures had dropped a little by the time World No.3 Murray took to the court to play American Robbie Kendrick.

The Scot won 7-5, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 while spectators basked in the evening rays. (ANI)

Super Car Club launched in Mumbai

Mumbai, June 22 (ANI): A mere glimpse of a well-designed and exotic car can “bring smile on the face of the viewer”. With these words as its inspiration, uxury sedan enthusiasts launched a ‘Super Car Club in Mumbai on Sunday.

Now people can watch some of the hot and fastest machines of the world like Ferrari, Audi, BMW, Lamborghini and Porsche under one roof.

“It gives an opportunity to car lovers and car owners to come and meet people who have similar thoughts and hobbies. It also provides a platform to enjoy and share opinion on cars,” said Dinesh Lal, a member of club.

This elite club is the brainchild of industrialist Gautam Singhania.

“I have spoken to the Ministry of Tourism that every year we have a Mumbai Super Car Parade, so many people from all over should come and see it as it happens in many countries of the world. I feel that when you see a super car no matter what mood you are in, it puts a smile on your face,” he said.

This nascent club is in talks with Superstar clubs across Europe and America to organise automotive related events. (ANI)

Tony Blair left a 7,000-pound roof-repair bill just two days before stepping down

London, June 19 (ANI): Two days before stepping down as British Prime Minister, Tony Blair submitted a whopping 6,990 pounds expense claim for roof repairs on his designated second home, it has emerged.

Blair submitted an invoice on June 25 for “roof repairs,” and left Downing Street on June 27.

The bill, dated June 8, suggests that Blair arranged for the work to be done after he had announced the date when he would be leaving parliament, The Telegraph reports.

The expense claim is yet another example of an MP taking the last available opportunity to exploit the system to renovate their designated second home with thousands of pounds of taxpayers’ money, the paper said.

Blair’s claim was reduced to 4,453 pounds by the fees office, but he was able to claim 5,772 pounds in the 2007-08 financial year, despite being in office for less than three months.

British MPs are allowed to claim “winding up” expenses in the weeks before they leave parliament, but more and more outgoing members doing up their homes often leads to the allegation that they are abusing the system in bid to sell their houses on higher prices, the report added.

A spokesman for Blair, however, said: “Roof repairs were carried out well before Tony Blair announced that he was standing down as PM, but the claim was made much later.”

Blair’s claim forms for the additional costs allowance for 2004-2007 also showed that he claimed 177.13 pounds for food and 131.50 pounds for his television licence apart from an annual newspaper bill of 1,167.48 pounds and regular bills for his Orange mobile phone. (ANI)

Wal-Mart launches store in Amritsar

Amritsar, May 30 (ANI): Wal-Mart Stores Incorporation opened its first cash-and-carry store in Amritsar on Saturday.

Bharti Wal-Mart, the joint venture between the American retailer and India’s Bharti Enterprises, was scheduled to launch the store on Tuesday. But the programme was deferred following recent riots in Punjab to Sikh Guru attack incident in Vienna.

The store-Best Price Modern Wholesale-will be the first of between 10 to 15 planned wholesale facilities in India, measuring about 50,000-100,000 square feet each and employing about 5,000 people over the next seven years.

The entry of multinational retailers into India’s fragmented and tightly controlled retail industry is mired in controversy and Wal-Mart’s entry is seen as a sign of foreign investors’ confidence in the country after ruling coalition was re-elected two weeks ago.

“The world is changing, in India the youth is coming in, they want better stores if you go and look at our store here today, which we have made a model ‘Mera Kirana’ you look at the store, it tells you a story. You will see with this cash and carry coming in, with the best price coming in, you will see once the people come in and start linking with us, they will see the change,” said Rajan Bharti Mittal, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Bharti Enterprises.

A big number of customers thronged the store on the first day itself.

Used to moving from one shop to another for their groceries and other requirements, the customers at the store were happy at finding all their needful things under one roof.

“Earlier we had to search through various shops for the things we wanted, but now here we are getting everything under one roof and the cost is also same, maybe less,” said an unidentified customer.

India’s retail industry, currently estimated at $500 billion, is seen rising to more than 800 billion dollars by 2013 but less than 5 percent of the market is in the hands of modern retailers. By Ravinder Singh Robin (ANI)

Challenging simple concepts can save planet Earth

Washington, May 30 (ANI): A democracy activist has said that challenging simple concepts can save planet Earth from demise.

In a speech at Ottawa’s Carleton University as part of the 78th Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, author and democracy activist Frances Moore Lappe called for a wholesale revamping of the way we view government, the economy and democracy.

“If we manage to do it, we can save ourselves from our own demise,” she said.

She said many people today are frightened by the potential for disaster, ecological and otherwise, and fearful that nothing can be done to prevent it.

But, according to Lappe, we can do something – if we challenge five assumptions about the way the world works.

The first is that going green means “powering down,” or reducing our consumption of energy.

Lappe said all we have to do is stop getting energy from fossil fuels and start getting it from renewable sources like the sun.

“Every day the sun supplies us with 15,000 times the amount of energy we’re now using in fossil fuels,” she said.

“If everyone had a solar panel or windmill on their roof, we wouldn’t be dependent on oil companies – and as individuals, we’d feel more in control of our own destiny,” she added.

“The second idea to dispense with is that going green means an end to economic growth. What we have to do is change our idea of what growth is,” she said.

“There’s plenty of room for growth, she says, if we learn to do things more efficiently,” she added.

The third idea Lappe wants to challenge is the notion that humans are by nature greedy, self-centred and materialistic.

“Under certain conditions, we can be monsters. But, there wouldn’t be 6.8 billion of us on the planet today if we didn’t also have positive qualities such as empathy, cooperation and fairness,” she said.

The fourth idea she disputes is that we dislike rules.

She said that humans crave structure, particularly rules that make sense to us as individuals and which foster a sense of inclusion.

The final concept she wants to challenge is the idea that our problems are so pressing there’s no time for democracy, and only an authoritarian regime can save us.

She believes the only hope for the planet is to trust in people and set rules that bring out the best in us. (ANI)

Pumping water from rainwater tanks can cost a lot of energy

Washington, May 28 (ANI): An Australian researcher has warned that though rainwater tanks can save a lot of water, pumping water from them can be energy intensive.

“We should ensure we don’t create an energy problem while trying to solve a water problem, Professor Stuart White of the Institute for Sustainable Futures at the University of Technology, Sydney, told ABC News.

“The message is that we need to be really careful about this because of the growth in the use of rainwater tanks,” he added.

“The message is not that rainwater tanks are a problem,” he explained.

According to White, gravity is a useful way to deliver rainwater to taps, but it is not always feasible in urban areas because tanks need to be higher than the roof to provide sufficient pressure for showers.

As a result, most households use small pumps that switch on every time you turn the tap on, even if it’s just briefly to clean your teeth or flush the toilet.

“It means you have a pump running at full revs to do a tiny amount of work,” said White.

In what is believed to be the first study of its kind, White and colleagues, monitored the rainwater consumption and associated energy consumption of 8 households in Sydney and Newcastle.

They calculated the “energy intensity” of household rainwater systems, which is the amount of energy used to get each kilolitre of water to the tap.

They found in most cases pumping water from rainwater tanks is more energy intensive than getting it from mains water, although lower than getting it from desalination.

White said that the standard suburban system rainwater tank with pump had an energy intensity of 1.5 kilowatt-hours per kilolitre.

“The water that you get out of a tap would be less than 1 kilowatt-hour per kilolitre,” he said.

White said that the task now is to work out how to reduce the energy intensity of rainwater systems.

According to him, one option is to use pressure vessels, which can be fitted to a standard pump. These store pressure and avoid using the pump when only a small amount of water is needed.

Another option is to use variable speed pumps, which match the amount of energy used to the amount of water needed.

Still another option are rainwater switches, which uses mains water for small usages, only turning the pump on for larger usages. (ANI)

Brooke Shields talks of her skin cancer scare

Washington, May 23 (ANI): American actress Brooke Shields has revealed that she was left terrified after a spot on her face turned out to be pre-cancerous.

The 43-year-old star, who used to love spending time in the sun, said that the incident served as a wake-up call to her as she “used to think it was the best thing in the world to be baking in the sun.”

“I had a spot on my face. The doctor scraped it, and it turned out to be precancerous,” People magazine quoted her as saying.

“I was scared,” she revealed.

The actress had the spot removed and said that she was doing “fine”.

She, however, could not help recall the time when as a teen, she would indulge in hot-weather rituals like “baby oil and tinfoil and lemon in your hair”.

“All my girlfriends and I would go up on the roof in New York; we didn’t have to be at the beach,” said Shields, who stopped actively tanning a decade ago.

“You think that because you’re not in the sun anymore, it’s all in the past. And then something like that crops up and you’re made aware of how dangerous it really can be,” she added. (ANI)

Unique roof garden in Chattisgarh

Raipur, May 20 (ANI): A man in Maha Samudra District of Chhattisgarh has gained expertise in growing all kinds of crops and plants on his rooftop garden.

B.P. Basai, 64, a retired official from the food corporation of India, is the proud owner of a roof top garden, which is located twenty-five feet above the ground.

Basai says his roof top garden’s success is result of his thirteen years’ toil.

“I’m working towards it (the roof top garden) since 1996 and I have gained enough experience in this filed. I sow all kinds of crops except the big trees etc,” said Basai.

Since 1996, B.P. Basai has been growing fruits, vegetables and crops on top of his 3200 square feet roof.

After seeing Basai’ roof top garden yield all kinds of fruits and vegetables, Maha Samudra District agriculture department has started various schemes to help the farmers increase their yield.

“B.P Basai was interested in collecting the rare plants from the beginning. The department has also started various schemes for the farmers they may be related to irrigation, seed development and other things which lead to increase in yield,” said Vinod Verma, Deputy Coordinator, Agriculture Department, Maha Samudra District.

Basai says his experiment has not only enabled him to cultivate the fruits and vegetables of his choice, but it also keeps his roof cool during the summers. (ANI)

Brad Pitt, brother donate $600k to Missouri university

Washington, May 20 (ANI): Brad Pitt and his younger brother Doug have together made a contribution of 600,000 dollars to a university in Missouri to help its sporting arena land an eco-friendly title.

The Hollywood heartthrob and his sibling donated the amount to Drury University in their native Springfield to lend a helping hand to the institution’s O’Reilly Family Event Center get a Gold Leadership in Environmental Energy and Design (LEED) certification.

According to PerezHilton.com, the arena, now the first one to boast of the title, has “low-flow water fixtures, a dedicated recycling area and a solar-reflective roof and pavement materials”, reports Contactmusic.

And in a bid to recognise the generous efforts of the brothers, school officials have decided to rename the court of the arena after their father.

It is now to be called as the William A. Pitt Court. (ANI)

Wimbledon Centre Court’s retractable roof inaugurated

London, May 18 (ANI): The new 80 million pound Centre Court retractable roof at Wimbledon worked without a hitch on Sunday as Tim Henman, Andre Agassi, Steffi Graf and Kim Clijsters starred in an exhibition event to mark its unveiling.

“I have not always been in favour of change in tennis, yet this is fantastic. It was cold, wet and windy outside but the court surface was fine and the atmosphere very good. I’ve always thought the atmosphere on Centre Court phenomenal, as it’s the best court in the world. But with this roof, I’m convinced it will be even better,” The Sun quoted Henman, 34, as saying.

Agassi, 39, said: “I was a little worried the court could become slippery but it was great. The sound was incredible.

“We’ve had some titanic battles on this court, particularly in last year’s Nadal v Federer final. The atmosphere, though, will be even better when the roof is closed.”

The project took three years and all 15,000 tickets for yesterday’s initial ‘shout out’ were sold in less than five minutes.

The button was pressed to close the roof at 2.40 p.m. and seven minutes later it was completely shut.

Henman joined Clijsters to beat the husband and wife duo of Agassi and Graf 7-6 in an entertaining doubles.

Agassi then beat Henman 6-4 before Clijsters, 25, who is coming out of retirement later this year, defeated Graf 6-4.

Graf, 39, who triumphed at Wimbledon seven times, said: “The memories came flooding back.” (ANI)

Mumbai’s civic authorities render ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ kids homeless

Mumbai, May 14 (ANI): Nearly 20 children who acted in the Oscar-winning “Slumdog Millionaire”, including Azharuddin Ismail, got a shock when civic authorities on Thursday demolished the polythene sheet-covered roof which used to house them in Garib Nagar slum area of Mumbai.

Ismail shot to fame after his role as Salim, the young role of the movie’s central character.

Ismail was sleeping when the civic authorities landed with the bulldozers and asked his family to vacate the house.

The actor’s family alleged that the demolition was carried out without any prior notice.

“They did not inform us. No notice was given to us. They suddenly came and ran the bulldozer on our houses and broke everything in the slum area,” said Samina Banu, Azharuddin’s mother.

Ismail Shaikh, father of Azharuddin Ismail, quipped that their life has become similar to a ‘dog’ as the earthmoving machinery of the civic authorities bulldozed the houses of the poor families without any notice.

“Its not about Azhar or me. It’s about all the poor people here. They made a movie ‘Slumdog’ and similarly we are living life of a dog here. Anybody can come here and run a bulldozer over our houses,” Ismail Shaikh said.

Indian authorities had promised new homes for Azharuddin and his co-star Rubina Ali after their return from the Oscars since they had been residing in slums.

But that promise seems to have gone into oblivion and Azharuddin has now been forced to live on streets in contrast to his stint of walking the red carpet at the Oscars in Los Angeles.

The civic authorities razed down 12 other huts in the area during the demolition drive. (ANI)

Court judgement could threaten future of UK village green cricket

London, May 14 (ANI): A county court is to rule whether a homeowner can stop his local village cricket team playing because of the threat of players knocking a six on to his roof or into his garden.

In a long running dispute that has more the hallmarks of a bitter divorce than a neighbourly dispute, a judge will be asked to hand down a legal ruling that will have implications for amateur cricketers up and down the country, reports The Telegraph.

It centers on Shamley Green, near Guilford in Surrey, where cricket has been played on its village green for 169 years, despite roads running through the playing area and the backs of houses dotting the boundary.

But four years ago, when Mike Burgess moved into a bungalow on the edge of the boundary and just 25 yards from the crease, all that changed.

Aware that a crisp, square leg pull could run under his gate or through his hedge; or a slog could arrow straight onto his roof, he issued a set of demands that would protect his bungalow.

After a flurry of arguments, legal letters and even a session of independent mediation, Burgess is now asking the court to issue an injunction against the club, preventing it from playing on the green until his demands are met.

They include calling for the club to put up 25ft high nets around his property to protect it from any stray balls, and for players to be declared out if they hit it so hard it clears the nets and hits his property. He also wants a health and safety risk assessment to protect other homeowners and the general public while a match is on.

David Harris, chairman of the cricket club, said it had done all it could to meet Burgess half way and said its future was in doubt if the court ruled against them.

The club has a policy of paying for replacement windows and roof tiles caused by their cricketers.

Burgess, 54, a clinical audit specialist, said: “This has nothing to do with stopping cricket, I like cricket, but the injunction is designed to instigate what needs to be done to create a safe environment.” (ANI)

Posh and kids ‘to move to Italy this summer’

New Delhi, May 13 (ANI): Victoria Beckham is planning to move to Italy this summer along with her three kids, it has emerged.

The former Spice Girl, who is currently living in Los Angeles with her sons while soccer star husband David plays for AC Milan, wants them all to live under the same roof, reports The China Daily.

A source said: “Victoria loves America but all the flying back and forward is starting to take its toll, and being apart from David has been really hard for them both. She loves her friends and her life in Los Angeles, but it doesn’t make up for the fact she is so far away from her husband.

“Victoria hated the idea of moving to Milan at first, but she’s warmed to it.

Plus, she doesn’t want David to be on his own too long away from her and the kids,” the source added.

David – who has been in Italy since January – is due to return to America next month to resume his contract with Los Angeles but it is thought AC Milan want to sign him on a permanent basis for next season, which starts in August.

The source added to Britain’s Star magazine: “Victoria has said the kids were hoping to stay in Los Angeles, where they have settled in, especially Brooklyn.

But they are used to moving a lot now. They’re well-rounded kids, so Victoria isn’t worried about them adjusting to a new home and a new school.” (ANI)
