Rooney perfect role model for England team: Capello

London, May 21(ANI): England manager Fabio Capello has hailed striker Wayne Rooney as the perfect role model for the Three Lions team.

Capello also believes that it is Rooney’s constant desire to improve his skills that is supporting the striker’s quest to be recognized as one of the world’s best players.

“Wayne Rooney is one of the best talents I have ever coached. He’s like Raul in that he is a very important player and a big talent. Every time Rooney trains he wants to stay on the training pitch for as long as possible,” The Daily Express quoted Capello, as saying.

“It is really important the other players see that Rooney, one of the best players in the world, wants to stay on the pitch and wants to continue to learn,” he added.

Rooney, the Footballer of the Year, has been training freely without feeling the groin strain which troubled him towards the end of the season at Manchester United. (ANI)

Chinese astronauts have dog meat on menu to keep fit

London, May 13 (ANI): The first Chinese man to orbit around the earth has said that astronauts eat dog meat to in order to provide them nutrition and keep them fully fit.

The 44-year-old military pilot, Yang Liwei, who commanded the Shenzhou Five mission in 2003, revealed the menu on board Chinese spacecraft in his autobiography, The Nine Levels between Heaven and Earth.

“Many of my friends are curious about what we eat (in space) and think that the astronauts must have some expensive delicacies, like shark’s fin or abalone. Actually we ate quite normal food, there is no need to keep it a secret,” The Telegraph quoted Yang, as writing in his book.

The menu given by Yang (44) included braised chicken, steamed fish and dog meat from Huajiang County in Guangdong, which is famed for its nutritional benefits in China.

A local proverb in the south of China is that “Huajiang dog is better for you than ginseng”, referring to the medicinal root that plays a vital role in traditional Chinese medicine, the paper quoted excerpts from the book, as stating.

To help battle the winter cold, dog is widely eaten in northern China and the menu was still in use last year, when Chinese astronauts conducted their first ever spacewalk, the paper said.

China has plans to land a man on the moon by 2020.

The revelation angered animal rights campaigners, who said Yang was setting a bad example for millions of his fans.

“Yang Liwei is a role model for so many young people and he is one of China’s greatest heroes.

“We hope that he might recognise dogs as the heroes they are too: they found survivors after the Sichuan earthquake and protected people from potential terrorists during the Olympic games. Surely they deserve more,” said Jill Robinson, the founder of Animals Asia. (ANI)

Third LNP defection ‘isn’t an issue’

Liberal National Party (LNP) president Bruce McIver says the resignation of a party candidate in far north Queensland is not a major concern.

Former Barron River candidate Wendy Richardson has followed the lead of MPs Aidan McLindon and Rob Messenger and quit the party to run as an independent at the next state election

Mr McIver says it is unlikely Ms Richardson would have been chosen to represent the party anyway.

“We are not concerned about this at all. I’ve talked to Warren Entsch – he’s our regional chairman in north Queensland – and both Warren and I agree this isn’t really an issue at all,” Mr McIver said.

“It would be highly unlikely that Wendy would have had the support of the party to run again and I think she has taken the opportunity to change her status.”

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader John-Paul Langbroek has warned two ex-LNP members to be wary of advice from other independents.

Mr McLindon, the Member for Beaudesert, and Mr Messenger, the Member for Burnett, met with veteran federal independent Bob Katter yesterday.

Mr Langbroek says Mr Katter is not necessarily a good role model.

“They have to be very careful about what they’re out there promising or what they’re discussing with Bob Katter who clearly is very aware of the fact there’s a federal election coming up later this year,” he said.

“Bob Katter tends to do a lot of noise in an election year and let’s have a look at what Bob Katter has actually been able to deliver [as Member] for Kennedy.”

Mike Tyson suggests kids to ‘walk away’ from bullies

London, May 10 (ANI): Boxing legend Mike Tyson is preaching his children to adopt an anti-violent stance and “walk away” from fights after successfully turning his own chaotic life around.

The sporting icon became notorious for his short temper, especially when he bit off a piece of Evander Holyfield”s ear during a heavyweight title fight in 1997.

But post-retirement in 2005, he is trying to be a role model for his five children by advising them to steer clear of any kind of fight.

“What am I gonna tell my son when a bully picks on him? (I used to say), ”Stand up for yourself.” But now I say, ”Forget about that, don”t even fight.” Normally I would say stand up for yourself. Don”t even stand up for yourself! Just walk away,” The Daily Star quoted Tyson as saying. (ANI)

Michael Douglas” son gets 5yrs in prison for drug trafficking

New York, April 21 (ANI): Actor Michael Douglas’s son has been sentenced to five years in jail for drug trafficking.

Cameron Douglas was arrested last year at the trendy Gansevoort Hotel in New York. He pleaded guilty to drugs charges in January.

Federal Judge Richard Berman ruled on the side of leniency, sending the 31-year-old to just five years behind bars rather than the minimum of 10 under federal sentencing guidelines.

Prosecutors said the judge didn”t have to impose the minimum sentence, reports the New York Post.

With his actor father present in the crowded Manhattan courtroom, the judge said Douglas will serve only four years since he will get credit for the eight months he has spent in lockup since his arrest.

In court, Cameron apologized to his family and said that he was grateful for the chance to clean up his life.

“First, I”d like to apologize to my family … for my behavior. … I”d like to ask you for the opportunity to be a productive family member and a good role model,” he said.

Cameron will also have to pay a 25,000-dollar fine, serve 450 hours of community service once he is released and undergo weekly counselling sessions, including with members of his family. (ANI)

Augusta boss scolds Woods for sex scandal

Augusta National Golf Club chairman Billy Payne has scolded 14-time major champion Tiger Woods for the sex scandal that forced a five-month layoff Woods will end Thursday at the Masters.

On the eve of the 74th Masters, Payne made an unprecedented statement about player conduct, making it clear that Woods will no longer be judged solely by how well he scores in relation to par when his comeback begins Thursday.

“We hope and pray begin his new life in a positive, hopeful and constructive manner,” Payne said.

Payne said Woods will be playing for more than just himself this week as his comeback begins from admitted adultery that has seen more than a dozen women claim sexual affairs with the married father of two.

“This year it will not be just for him but for all of us who believe in second chances,” Payne said.

Describing Woods as a fallen role model, Payne said he was most saddened that a younger generation lost an idol.

“He disappointed all of us and more importantly our kids and grandkids,” said Payne.

“Is there a way forward? I hope so. I believe so.”

Payne said Woods forgot that “with fame and fortune comes responsibility” and hopes that Woods remembers in the future that children among his supporters want his autograph but “would settle for his smile”.

Payne, who said he had spoken to Woods and that Woods attended the champions dinner on Tuesday, added that he wanted Woods to understand that “life’s greatest rewards” come from helping others.

While extra security and other measures were taken into account to prepare for Woods making his return at Augusta National, Payne said the tournament was never concerned about being overshadowed by that comeback.

“We don’t look at things that way. We’re very secure in who we are,” he said.

“We do things our way. We’re not threatened by big news stories, things like that.”

Underwear label Ultimo dumps ‘bad role model’ Peaches Geldof

London, March 30 (ANI): Peaches Geldof has been dumped by underwear label Miss Ultimo.

The model has been axed from her 500,000-pound job over claims she has become a bad role model for teenagers.

Ultimo supremo Michelle Mone said that she had no option but to end the star’s deal with the label after more than 3,000 complaints from parents.

“I am a mother and have responsibility for role models with our brands,” the Daily Star quoted Michelle, 38, as saying.

“There’s a point where a business must stick to its principles and as a brand that targets young women, we feel it is impossible for Peaches to continue.”

Recently, a sex and drugs scandal involving Peaches was revealed.

Topless pictures of an alleged heroin binge were posted on the Internet by Ben Mills, who she had a one-night stand with.

Peaches has angrily denied Ben’s claim that they took heroin and insisted only drink had been taken.

The socialite insists that she had done nothing wrong.

“I am disappointed Ultimo has decided not to extend my contract based on a wildly exaggerated account of a night in Los Angeles five months ago,” she said.

“Whilst I vehemently deny parts of that account, I understand Ultimo’s decision,” she added. (ANI)

“Repentant” Hamilton will not get ‘VIP treatment for driving offence’: Victoria Govt.

Melbourne, Mar 27(ANI): The Victorian Government has said that Formula One racing driver Lewis Hamilton will not be granted preferential treatment after being caught ‘hoon driving’ outside the Australian Grand Prix circuit at Albert Park in Melbourne.

Hamilton’s car was impounded on Friday night for 48 hours after police caught him doing a burnout with his silver Mercedes.

Victorian Major Events Minister Tim Holding said Hamilton should not expect any VIP treatment for the driving offence.

“It doesn”t matter who you are, it doesn”t matter where you”ve come from. If you break our hoon driving laws in Victoria you will have your car impounded and you will face the full force of the law,” The Herald Sun quoted Holding, as saying.

“Lewis Hamilton has learned that. I suppose it just sends a really powerful lesson to everyone that if you do the wrong thing on Victorian roads you will get caught,” he added.

Holding further said that Hamilton would be charged on summons and could face further penalties from the Grand Prix authorities or his McLaren team.

“He”s very embarrassed, I”m sure his team”s embarrassed and we just take the view that what this shows is that Victoria”s hoon driving laws apply to everyone,” Holding said.

He also said that the scandal sends out a bad message to youngsters who see Hamilton as a role model, but denied it would take the gloss off this weekend’s Grand Prix.

Meanwhile, Hamilton is expected to face the media after the final qualifying session today. (ANI)

Raider’s licence suspended for drink-driving

Canberra Raiders star David Shillington has been in the disqualified from driving for 12 months for drink driving

Police breath tested Shillington in the Canberra suburb of O’Connor in December last year and found his blood alcohol content to be more than twice the legal limit at 0.115.

The court heard the 26 year old had been drinking at All Bar Nun for six hours and he got into his car to move it to a nearby carpark.

The footballer’s lawyer argued for a good behaviour order because losing his licence would make getting to his community service commitments difficult.

But magistrate Beth Campbell said Shillington was a role model engaged in selfish conduct and she had to take into account his previous drink driving offence where he was disqualified for three years.

Shillington was sentenced to a 12 month good behaviour order, fined $500 and disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Pakistan arrests US-born al-Qaida spokesman

KARACHI: The American-born spokesman for al-Qaida has been arrested by Pakistani intelligence officers in the southern city of Karachi, two officers and a government official said on Sunday, the same day Adam Gadahn appeared in a video urging US Muslims to attack their own country.

The arrest of Gadahn is a major victory in the US-led battle against al-Qaida and will be taken as a sign that Pakistan is cooperating more fully with Washington. It follows the recent detentions of several Afghan Taliban commanders in Karachi.

Gadahn — who has often appeared in al-Qaida videos — was arrested in the sprawling southern metropolis in recent days, two officers who took part in the operation said. A senior government official also confirmed the arrest.

They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

Gadahn grew up on a goat farm in Riverside County, California, and converted to Islam at a mosque in nearby Orange County.

He moved to Pakistan in 1998, according to the FBI, and is said to have attended an al-Qaida training camp six years later, serving as a translator and consultant for the group. He has been wanted by the FBI since 2004, and there is a $1 million reward for information leading to his arrest or conviction.

The 31-year-old is known by various aliases including Yahya Majadin Adams and Azzam al-Amriki.

He has posted videos and messages calling for the destruction of the West and for strikes against targets in the United States. The most recent was posted Sunday, praising the US Army major charged with killing 13 people in Fort Hood, Texas, as a role model for other Muslims.

A US court charged Gadahn with treason in 2006, making him the first American to face such a charge in more than 50 years. He could face the death penalty if convicted. He was also charged with two counts of providing material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization.

Gadahn has appeared in more than half a dozen al-Qaida videos. The video released Sunday appeared to have been made after the end of the year, but it was unclear exactly when.

Dawud Walid, the executive director of the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Southfield, Mich., condemned Gadahn’s call for violence, calling it a “desperate” attempt by Al-Qaida’s spokesman to provoke bloodshed within the US

Walid, a Navy veteran, said Muslims have honorably served in the American military will be unimpressed by al-Qaida’s message aimed at their ranks.

“We thoroughly repudiate and condemn his statement and what we believe are his failed attempts to incite loyal American Muslims in the miltary,” he said.

Imad Hamad, the senior national adviser for the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, based in Dearbon, Mich., condemned al-Qaida’s message and said it would have no impact on American Muslims.

“This a worthless rhetoric that is not going to have any effect on people’s and minds and hearts,” he said.

Al-Qaida has used Gadahn as its chief English-speaking spokesman, and he has called for the destruction of the West and for strikes against targets in the United States. In one video, he ceremoniously tore up his American passport. In another, he admitted his grandfather was Jewish, ridiculing him for his beliefs and calling for Palestinians to continue fighting Israel.

Bilic blasts Terry over his remarks on Eduardo’s diving affair

London, Sep 6(ANI): Croatian coach Slaven Bilic has blasted England skipper John Terry over his comments about the Eduardo diving affair, and said that he has known Eduardo for years, and he does not dive intentionally.

“John Terry is not talking like that when Didier Drogba goes down for Chelsea. I am not saying Drogba is a diver. I adore him as a player, but I’m saying when they get a penalty they’re not accusing their own team-mates,” The Sun quoted Bilic, as saying.

“If anyone knows him (Eduardo) I know him. He is no diver. He is a good guy, a sportsman, a professional and a role model of fair play. Sometimes he waits for a contact. Maybe it wasn’t a penalty against Celtic but you can’t say there was no contact,” he added.

Croatian and Arsenal striker Eduardo was banned for two matches by UEFA for alleged simulation to win a penalty in Arsenal’s 3-1 win over Celtic in a Champions League qualifier.

Terry had said that the ban on Eduardo was harsh, adding that he think that Eduardo had dived which was something that English players don’t do due to their inherent honesty.

Bilic further said that the attack on Eduardo may be potential mind games to put pressure on him before Croatia’s World Cup qualifier against England.

“I don’t care why John Terry did this but it’s all part of the game. If we’re talking about 100 per cent fair play it’s also not fair play from Terry to say something like that before the game if he wants to put pressure on the referee,” Bilic said.

“That would not be fair play in the same sense as what he was saying about Eduardo, accusing a fellow professional of these things,” he added. (ANI)

Katie Price’s hellraiser lifestyle could make her lose kids and £5m

London, September 6 (ANI): Hottie Katie Price could lose custody of her kids as well as 5 million pounds to her estranged husband/singer Peter Andre due to her hellraiser lifestyle, according to a top showbiz lawyer.

Ambi Sitham has said that the reality star’s boozy jaunts to Ibiza may do her harm during the divorce procedures at court.

“Price’s behaviour over the last four months is probably going to contribute to the custody arrangements, especially her well-publicised trips to Ibiza,” the Daily Star quoted her as saying.

Price’s explicit relationship with boyfriend Alex Reid, who has acted in an X-rated movie, may become a problem too.

She added: “She was obviously getting very drunk. In addition she has exposed her children at a very young age to a new relationship with Alex Reid.

“They will look into his background and at his suitability as a potential stepfather to Price’s children.

“The courts will not look favourably on anyone they deem a bad role model.

“I should think the least the judge would decide is to grant joint custody of the children to Price and Andre. He might even get sole custody.

“Andre, coming from a strong Greek-Cypriot family background, has conducted himself as the model father.”

The lawyer believes that Price could lose out on at least a quarter of the 20million pounds she has made since her wedding to the ‘Mysterious Girl’ singer during the settlement.

Ambi said: “The courts will look at what role was played in emotional support as well as financial.

“Andre will be able to show he contributed to the Katie Price brand. Before they met she was purely known as Jordan the glamour model.

“As a result of marrying Andre she was able to create an alter ego. I think she is in line for a bit of a shock.

“She will not be walking away from this without making a substantial payout.” (ANI)

Arsenal to fight Eduardo’s ‘cheat’ ban

London, Sep 2 (ANI): Arsenal will fight to clear Eduardo’s name after UEFA branded him a cheat.

Europe’s football governing body banned the striker for two games after finding him guilty of “deceiving the referee” by diving to win a penalty during last week’s Champions League qualifier against Celtic.

Eduardo is banned for Arsenal’s first two Champions League games against Standard Liege and Olympiakos.

But the Gunners are convinced the Croat has not been given a fair hearing and are ready to appeal, The Sun reported.

“We are disappointed with UEFA’s decision. We believe it is imperative UEFA’s explanation for its decision provides clear and comprehensive standards that will be consistently enforced,” a club statement read.

Croatia boss Slaven Bilic last night slammed Eduardo’s dive ban as a disgrace.

Bilic, who ironically dived to get Laurent Blanc sent off in the 1998 World Cup semi-final, said: “This is a disgrace. We are talking about a player who is a role model of a sportsman. I simply cannot understand how he can be punished.” (ANI)

Aguilera credits hubby for helping her overcome abusive past

Washington, Aug 29 (ANI): Pop singer Christina Aguilera paid an emotional tribute to her hubby Jordan Bratman in a recent TV interview, crediting him for helping her overcome her abusive past.

Aguilera, 28, and music marketing executive Bratman, 32, who are parents to 19-month-old son Max, will be married four years in November.

And the singer insists that it is only because of Bratman’s loving influence that she has been able to conquer her fears after growing up with an abusive father.

“I grew up not having any real male perspective or role model and Jordan just continuously makes me fall deeper and deeper in love with him everyday,” Contactmusic quoted her as telling E! Online.

“He just exudes such love and is such a great father to Max that it just makes me the happiest woman alive.

“I’m just lucky to have him in my life… every couple has times when they disagree, but I never allow any arguments to escalate in front of Max,” she added. (ANI)

Fergie vows to clean up her ‘filthy’ language during shows

Washington, July 14 (ANI): Black Eyed Peas singer Stacy Ann Ferguson, aka Fergie, has vowed to clean up her “filthy” language during the band’s stage shows.

Fergie, 34, who had embraced her sexual side during her solo career, and turned stage shows into raunchy extravaganzas, revealed that she would like to be a better role model for young girls.

She insists the Boom Boom Pow hitmakers are a family band, and has vowed to keep performances with them child-friendly.

“I wasn’t trying to be a role model with (debut solo album) The Dutchess…,” Contactmusic quoted her as having told Marie Claire magazine.

“Seeing little girls in the audience with their moms. (It) made me think about what I do onstage a little bit more. I had to watch my mouth, because it can be filthy,” she added. (ANI)

‘Hesitant’ Brit mums urge celebs to breastfeed in public

London, July 8 (ANI): Two thirds of the ‘hesitant’ Brit mothers have called upon celebrities to breastfeed in public to encourage acceptance in a new survey.

The poll conducted by Mother and Baby magazine revealed that many mothers feel too self-conscious to breastfeed over the fears of public stares.

The mothers urged celebrities to breastfeed in public to encourage acceptance, with Myleene Klass chosen as the top celebrity role model.

The survey revealed that 65pct said they would not even try it because they were worried about people looking at them.

Around 35pct admitted they were forced to feed their baby in a toilet, while half have had to flee to their car.

Overall, more than half of those questioned said they had been asked to leave a restaurant or cafe, while 30pct said they had been asked to move in a shopping centre.

The poll also revealed 65pct of respondents said they would be keener to try breastfeeding if there was a more relaxed attitude towards it within society.

“Breastfeeding is a wonderful, unique time in a new mum’s life and rightly needs to be celebrated,” the Sky News quoted Miranda Levy, editor of Mother and Baby magazine as saying.

“We need to change these perceptions with more positive images of breastfeeding women,” she added.

Anne Fox, from the National Childbirth Trust, said: “We are launching a national scheme for breastfeeding friendly venues later this year. The scheme will help families to find breastfeeding friendly facilities in their local area.” (ANI)
